Search

The present checklist of the oribatid mites compiles all known published records of Ecuador with 479 species belonging to 232 genera and 89 families; 180 of these species were described from Ecuador. Oribatid mites were found in 15 of the 24 provinces that conform the Ecuadorian territory. In the provinces of Zamora Chinchipe, Galápagos, Loja, Cotopaxi, Pichincha and Napo, 95% of the species were recorded. 23.6% of these species are known only from Ecuador, 47.8% are distributed in Neotropical region, the remaining are Pantropical, semicosmopolitan and cosmopolitan. This high number of species makes Ecuador the country with the second largest number of species records in Latin America after Brazil.

International audience; The present study is based on oribatid mite material collected in Ethiopia in 2019. A list of identified taxa, including 11 species from 10 genera and nine families, is provided; of these, six species, four genera and two families are recorded for the first time in the fauna of this country. Two new species of the superfamily Oripodoidea are described: Pilobates wachteli n. sp. (Haplozetidae); and Zetorchella robertbecki n. sp. (Caloppiidae).

This checklist of the oribatid fauna of Canada and Alaska (excluding Astigmata) includes 580 identified species in 249 genera and 96 families. The known fauna of Canada includes 556 identified species in 247 genera, and that of Alaska includes 182 species in 95 genera; 39 of the 42 oribatid superfamilies are represented. We further list ~ 300 species that are currently unidentified, and possibly undescribed. In addition, we list 42 genera that are represented only by unidentified and probably undescribed species. For each species we give combinations and synonymies, specific locations in Alaska and the Provinces and Territories of Canada, habitats, and biogeography. There are 182 identified species known for Alaska, 152 for Yukon, 122 for Northwest Territories, 58 for Nunavut; 210 for British Columbia, 213 for Alberta, 15 for Saskatchewan, 84 for Manitoba, 167 for Ontario, 210 for Québec, 110 for Nova Scotia, 77 for New Brunswick, 84 for Newfoundland and 6 for Prince Edward Island. The known fauna of Canada is smaller than that of Austria, and is approximately equivalent to that of the Czech Republic. As these countries are much smaller in size than Canada and less ecologically diverse, we consider the Canadian and Alaskan fauna are at most 25% known. The paucity of these data reflects the absence of taxonomic and faunistic studies on Oribatida in State, Provinces or Territories, and especially in the Canadian and Alaskan National Park systems and the hundreds of Provincial Parks. Despite the almost 90% increase in described species since the catalogue of Marshall et al. (1987), there is a need for focussed, coordinated research on Oribatida in the natural regions throughout Canada and Alaska, and for monographs on families and genera with large numbers of undescribed species, such as Brachychthoniidae, Damaeidae, Cepheidae, Liacaridae, Oppiidae, Suctobelbidae, Hydrozetidae, Phenopelopidae, Scheloribatidae, Haplozetidae and Galumnidae.

The present paper deals with the redescriptions of two known species and with description of four new species of oribatid mites of the genus Bipassalozetes, which were collected in Mongolia.

Further investigations must be carried out to reveal if this genus is now restricted to lower altitudes. The oribatid fauna from Fuerteventura (Canary Islands) is studied for the first time; 86 species are recorded, from which 18 are new to the Science and two are new subspecies. Two new genera are erected: Passalobates n. gen. (Family Passalozetidae) and Fuerteventuria n. gen. (Family Protoribatidae). Two species belonging to Ethiopic genera are described: Scutoverticosus insperatus n. sp. and Ethiovertex elisae n. sp. These genera contained until now the type species only.Se estudian por primera vez los ácaros oribátidos de Fuerteventura, y se citan 86 especies de las que 18 son nuevas para la Ciencia y dos son nuevas subespecies, y se establecen dos géneros nuevos: Passalobates n. gen. Passalozetes strenzkei Weigmann, nom. nov. [178d,e] Syn., Tax.: " P. bidactylus " sensu Strenzke 1953b (B); Ghilarov & Krivoluckij 1975 (B). " Scutovertex bidactylus ": Willmann 1931 a (B). Diese Art wurde von Strenzke (1953b) als P. bidactylus (Coggi, 1900) wiederbeschrieben. Es ist jedoch sehr unwahrscheinlich, da�� es Coggis Art ist, die eine andere Notogaster- und Prodorsum-Struktur hat, wahrscheinlich auch keine verdickten Notogaster- und Lamellarborsten. Da das Typenmaterial von Coggi noch nicht nachuntersucht wurde, auch kein topotypisches Material, besteht eine Unsicherheit ��ber die echte P. bidactylus; jedoch sind die von Perez-Inigo (1971) und Bernini (1973a) gefertigten Abbildungen, Merkmalsangaben und Funddaten eher mit P. bidactylus (Coggi, 1900) im Einklang. Mahunka (2001a) beschreibt eine " P. bidactylus " aus Kenia, die morphologisch der Strenzke-Art nahesteht. - nicht P. bidactylus Coggi, 1900: Perez-Inigo 1971 (B); Bernini 1973a (B). Passalozetes (Passalozetes) alumbrensis n. sp., a new species of Passalozetidae (Acari: Oribatida), is described from the soil of a mountain peak in the Andes Range, west of Argentina. An expansion of the diagnosis of Passalozetidae is proposed.
