6. AI-based Multi-class Traffic Model Oriented to Freeway Traffic Control

Abstract

In this extended abstract, we propose an Artificial Intelligence-based model dedicated to the representation of a multi-class traffic flow, i.e. a traffic flow in which different vehicle classes (at least cars and trucks) are explicitly represented, with the aim of using it for the development of freeway traffic control schemes based on ramp management. Specifically, the goal of this work is to develop a hybrid modelling technique in which a Machine Learning component and the multi-class version of METANET model are adopted to determine a better estimation and forecasting tool for freeway traffic. The resulting model is specifically devised in order to be included in a Model Predictive Control (MPC) scheme for the required traffic state prediction.

Abstract

This abstract deals with the control of truck platoons traveling in freeways. In order to improve their travel performance, in terms of travelling times and comfort and to guarantee safety, a hierarchical control scheme is proposed for each platoon. At the high level, the reference speed is computed according to a PI-based control rule with the main aim of reducing the time spent by the platoon in the congested area. This reference speed is communicated to the low control level which implements a Linear Quadratic Tracking policy and determines the optimal speed for each truck in the platoon. The application of these hierarchical controllers to a case study shows the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

18. Optimization of time‐varying feedback controller parameters for freeway networks.

Abstract

In this work, a freeway traffic control scheme is proposed to regulate traffic in freeway networks via multi‐class ramp metering. Specifically, each controlled on‐ramp of the system adopts a feedback regulator of proportional‐integral type and is able to compute the traffic flows entering the freeway mainstream, differentiated for each class of vehicles, e.g., cars and trucks. Since a crucial aspect of proportional‐integral controllers is the tuning of parameters, in this work an optimization‐based procedure is devised to determine the controller parameters to be used in the different on‐ramps of the network, according to the detected traffic conditions. To this end, a set of representative traffic scenarios is defined and, for each scenario, an offline optimization procedure is applied to determine the optimal parameters. Then, in real time, a controller parameter selector identifies the scenario associated with the current system conditions and communicates to the local controllers the optimal parameters to be applied. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is tested in a simulative example and the main results are discussed in the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP/2007-2013) / ERC Grant Agreement n. 321132, project TRAMAN21. Summarization: This paper proposes a freeway traffic controller with the objective of minimizing, at the same time, congestion phenomena and traffic emissions. A multi-class framework is considered in the paper, i.e two classes of vehicles (cars and trucks) are explicitly modelled and specific control actions for each vehicle class are computed. The controller is based on the formulation and solution of a constrained discretetime nonlinear optimal control problem for which a specific solution algorithm, the feasible direction algorithm, is used.
