Abstract

This paper presents the prototypes developed during the KOMBE project (Kommunikationshilfen für Behinderte) as well as our recent developments. The KOMBE project aimed at developing speech aids for persons suffering from various forms of severe motor impairment (in particular, ALS). The project used techniques from computational linguistics and artificial intelligence for the development of new types of language generation devices. The principles and tools we applied to the ALS communcation aid are defined in such a general way that they can be applied to further languages. We show the application to a symbol language which is used by non-speaking children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
