Abstract

A detailed description of the CUORICINO $^{130}Te$ neutrinoless double-beta ($\nbb$) decay experiment is given and recent results are reported. CUORICINO is an array of 62 tellurium oxide ($TeO_{2}$) bolometers with an active mass of 40.7 kg. It is cooled to $\sim 8-10$ mK by a dilution refrigerator shielded from environmental radioactivity and energetic neutrons. It is running in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Assergi, Italy. These data represent an exposure of $11.83\textrm{kg}...\textrm{y}$ or 91 mole-years of $^{130}Te$. No evidence for $\nbb$-decay was observed and a limit of $T^{0\nu}_{1/2}(^{130}Te)\geq3.0\times10^{24}$ y (90% C.L.) is set. This corresponds to an upper limit on the effective mass, $< m_{\nu}>$, between 0.19 and 0.68 eV when analyzed with the many published nuclear structure calculations. In the context of these nuclear models, the values fall within the range corresponding to the claim of evidence of $\nbb$-decay by H.V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus, \textit{et al.} The experiment continues to acquire data., Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We report the present results of CUORICINO a cryogenic experiment on neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD) of 130Te consisting of an array of 62 crystals of TeO2 with a total active mass of 40.7 kg. The array is framed inside of a dilution refrigerator, heavily shielded against environmental radioactivity and high-energy neutrons, and operated at a temperature of ~8 mK in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. Temperature pulses induced by particle interacting in the crystals are recorded and measured by means of Neutron Transmutation Doped thermistors. The gain of each bolometer is stabilized with voltage pulses developed by a high stability pulse generator across heater resistors put in thermal contact with the absorber. The calibration is performed by means of two thoriated wires routinely inserted in the set-up. No evidence for a peak indicating neutrinoless DBD of 130Te is detected and a 90% C.L. lower limit of 1.8E24 years is set for the lifetime of this process. Taking largely into account the uncertainties in the theoretical values of nuclear matrix elements, this implies an upper boud on the effective mass of the electron neutrino ranging from 0.2 to 1.1 eV. Abstract

The search for neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD-0ν) is a powerful tool to establish the correct neutrino mass hierarchy and whether the neutrino is a Majorana or Dirac particle. The Milano group has run several experiments using thermal detectors to search for the 130Te DBD-0ν. The Cuoricino experiment consists of an array of 62 TeO2 thermal detectors for a total mass of about 40 kg, by far the largest cryogenic experiment in the world. The detector installation in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory has been recently completed. After a test phase the experiment is now taking data and we report here the preliminary results. Cuoricino is the first step toward the CUORE experiment, which will consists of 1000 TeO2 thermal detectors for a total mass of about 760 kg: in this paper we discuss also the physics potential of both stages for what concerns the DBD-0ν search. Abstract

We present the Core Imaging Library (CIL), an open-source Python framework for tomographic imaging with particular emphasis on reconstruction of challenging datasets. Conventional filtered back-projection reconstruction tends to be insufficient for highly noisy, incomplete, non-standard or multi-channel data arising for example in dynamic, spectral and in situ tomography. CIL provides an extensive modular optimization framework for prototyping reconstruction methods including sparsity and total variation regularization, as well as tools for loading, preprocessing and visualizing tomographic data. The capabilities of CIL are demonstrated on a synchrotron example dataset and three challenging cases spanning golden-ratio neutron tomography, cone-beam X-ray laminography and positron emission tomography. Abstract

The CUORICINO ßß-decay detector is an array of 62 TeO2 bolometers; 44 are 5 × 5 × 5-cm crystals made with natural tellurium (33.8% 130Te). There are 18, 3 × 3 × 6-cm crystals, 14 of which are made of natural tellurium, 2 are isotopically enriched to 75% in 130Te, and 2 are enriched to 82.3% in 128Te. The total mass of 130Te is ~ 11 kg. The background rate is 0.23 ± 0.04 counts/keV/kg/yr in the energy interval 2480 to 2600 keV. During the cooling process, some of the wires became disconnected and only 32 of the large and 16 of the smaller crystals could be read out. The data presented here come from 29 of the 5×5×5-cm crystals containing 6.2 kg of 130Te. The new limit on the half-life is T0v >= 5×1023 yr, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass of the electron neutrino between 0.42 and 2.05 eV, depending on the nuclear model used to analyze the data.

Abstract

We present evidence of 1D S=1/2 anisotropic XY ferromagnetism in the paramagnetic phase of the cyanido-bridged chain complex [Tb(pzam)3(H2O)M(CN)8]H2O, with M=W(V), based upon the measurement of the specific heat, the uniform susceptibility and the magnetization curve on a powder sample. Both the specific heat and the susceptibility exhibit a transition peak to long-range ferromagnetism, mediated by the residual interchain couplings, at a critical temperature Tc=1.15 K. Yet in the temperature range T > Tc the specific heat exhibits a broad Schottky anomaly which can be very well fitted by the exact result for the 1D S=1/2 XY model with strong anisotropy in the XY plane (Jx = 1.89 K, Jy=2Jx). For the analysis of the susceptibility and magnetization, not directly accessible theoretically via the exact solution of the XY model, we resort to numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Very good agreement is found between the powder-sample data and the Monte Carlo data using an effective average g-factor., 6 pages, 6 figures, journal paper

Abstract

In the last 10 years bolometers have become extremely powerful detectors in the search for rare events, due to their very good resolution. Cuoricino, a 62 bolometer array, in the first months of activity reached a resolution (average in all detectors) in the energy region of interest (2528 keV) of 7 keV and a limit on the t1/2 of the process of 7.5·1023y. Cuoricino’s 62 detectors constitute the biggest number of macrobolometers (790 g each) ever cooled and demonstrate the feasibility of large arrays of bolometers. Following the indication of Cuoricino in CUORE R&D a new detector has been developed trying to improve the reproducibility of the detector’s performance, to increase the single detector mass (to reduce the number of channels) and to simplify the experiment assembly. The latest results are presented.

Abstract

We report the present results of the CUORICINO experiment, a cryogenic experiment on neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (DBD) of 130Te consisting of an array of 62 TeO2 crystals with a total active mass of 40:7 kg. The array is framed inside a dilution refrigerator, heavily shielded against environmental radioactivity and high-energy neutrons, and it is operated at a temperature of 8mK in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. After several improvements the live time of the experiment is near 75%.

Abstract

CUORE will be an observatory for rare events consisting of a tightly packed array of TeO2 bolometers, with a total mass of similar to 740 kg, operating in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory. A first step towards CUORE is CUORICINO, a running experiment with 40.7 kg of TeO2. Present results from CUORICINO for the neutrinoless double beta decay of Te-130 will be presented here (T-1/2(0 nu) >= 1.0x10(24) y, < m(nu)> <= 0.26-1.4 eV at 90% C.L.). The status of CUORE preparation and its physics potential, including dark matter searches, will be shown.
