4. Health assessment of a multi-bolted connection due to removing selected bolts

Abstract

In the paper, experimental studies of an asymmetric preloaded seven-bolted connection are presented. The tightening process of the connection was carried out with a wrench, monitoring the values of the bolt forces with a calibrated strain gauge measuring system. Two methods of bolt tightening were tested: in one and several passes. After all bolts were tightened, the selected bolts were removed, simulating bolt failure under the loading conditions of the connection. The influence of the method and sequence of bolt tightening on the distribution of bolt forces values after the introduction of failure states of some bolts was investigated. The results were statistically processed and presented in the form of graphs showing the distributions of normalised bolt forces values for all the considered failure cases.

26. Self-Excited Vibrations Counteraction in Machine Tool — Cutting Process System Using Controllable Eliminator of Vibration

Abstract

In the paper, the results of simulation investigations on the application of a semi-active vibration eliminator for suppression of machining chatter are presented. First, the idea of a semi-active vibration eliminator arranged in the "machine tool – cutting process" system (MT–CP) is presented. Next, the results of the identification process of parameters of this system are shown. Properties of the mass-damping-spring system of the machine tool were estimated during the modal testing. A mechanistic model of the cutting process was built on the basis of results of cutting tests. Two control algorithms have been tested: one with the time-invariant model of disturbances (MD) and another with the adaptive model of disturbances. Estimation of the eliminator effectiveness in the suppression of self-excited vibrations in a MT–CP system is also included.

Abstract

Paper presents a novel approach to a control design of bilateral teleoperation systems with force-feedback. The problem statement, analysis of research achievements to date, and the scope of the study are presented. The new design of a control unit for a master-slave system with force-feedback is presented on a simple and ideal 1-DOF bilateral teleoperation system. System control unit was based on an inverse model. The model was used to reduce value of force in the force-feedback communication channel, that the system might generate in freemotion. A substantial part of the paper is focused on the development of a mathematical model covering phenomena occurring in the investigated control scheme. The new approach was validated on a test-stand of a rotating non-linear pneumatic manipulator arm. Two linear pneumatic actuators were used in the drive system. The paper presents the modeling procedure of the experimental setup and the model used in the study. Three experiments are described to demonstrate the new control approach to master-slave objects with force-feedback. Abstract

During milling of flexible workpieces a regenerative chatter vibration may become a critical factor that limits productivity. It is shown in this paper that a selection of cutting parameters based on a stability lobes diagram may not always be a remedy for low productivity due to increased forced vibration level. Additionally, other factors such as tool wear may limit the selection of stable spindle speeds. This paper presents an active control system that counteracts the development of chatter vibration. The proposed active control system employs Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) algorithm and piezoelectric actuator to suppress vibration during cutting. The Kalman filter is used to estimate the state of the system required by LQG algorithm. The active control introduces damping into the system, thereby raising the critical depth of cut and reducing forced vibration amplitude. It enables stable cutting under a much wider range of cutting parameters than for the uncontrolled system. Cutting tests are performed to demonstrate an effectiveness of the control system.
