Explaining why the cosmological constant is so small has occupied cosmologists and particle physicists ever since Einstein first introduced it. Many proponents of the brane-world picture are tackling this problem again. A typical process might involve a proton and antiproton colliding to produce a single spray or jet of particles plus a graviton, which is emitted into the bulk. The particles that are confined to the brane also have Kaluza - Klein or higher string-excitation states, but for them the relevant scale is either the brane thickness or the new fundamental string scale. Both of these scales should correspond in energy to the new gravity scale of 1000 GeV or higher.

Last August the bookmaker Lad-brokes offered the public a chance to bet on science. When the betting opened, Ladbrokes was offering odds of 500/1 that gravitational waves – a so far unconfirmed prediction of Einstein's general theory of relativity – would be detected by a laser-based experiment called LIGO before 2010. To those of us working on gravitational waves this was an opportunity not to be missed, and we quickly staked the maximum amount allowed by the bookmakers. Others did the same, and when the betting closed a few weeks later the odds had shortened to 2/1.

One summer night in 1982, about a month before the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN was due to start colliding beams again, the Italian particle physicist Carlo Rubbia was pacing up and down. He had a newspaper in his hand, and he was waving it around and raving at a colleague. The newspaper was French and the article that had upset him was about the forthcoming experimental run at the SPS. Not surprisingly the article described the two experiments at the collider – called UA1 and UA2 – from a French point of view.

For Konrad Elsener and colleagues working at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory in central Italy, the idea of looking for a needle in a haystack must seem trivial by comparison. Their aim is to detect subatomic particles known as neutrinos that are fired in a beam from the CERN particle-physics laboratory in Geneva, travel 730 km through the Earth's crust in central Europe and arrive at their detector under the Gran Sasso mountain. Making such detections will be extremely difficult because neutrinos react so weakly with other matter – the researchers expect that of the roughly 1014 neutrinos to arrive at their huge lead detector each year only one or two will interact with the nuclei in it.
