Search

Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) have reported evidence for a stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background at nHz frequencies, possibly originating in the early Universe. We show that the spectral shape of the low-frequency (causality) tail of GW signals sourced at temperatures around $T\gtrsim 1$ GeV is distinctively affected by confinement of strong interactions (QCD), due to the corresponding sharp decrease in the number of relativistic species. Bayesian analyses in the NANOGrav 15 years and the previous International PTA datasets reveal a significant improvement in the fit with respect to cubic power-law spectra, previously employed for the causality tail. We determine the impact of the $\theta$-angle and axion physics on the near conformal dynamics of the large-charge baryon sector of $SU(2)$ gauge theories with $N_f$ fermions in the fundamental representation. We employ an effective approach featuring Goldstone and dilaton degrees of freedom augmented by the topological terms in the theory. We investigate how different dilaton potentials, including the ones for which a systematic counting scheme can be established, affect the results. The free scalar field is only conformally invariant when non-minimally coupled to gravity. In flat space this amounts to amending, or improving, the energy momentum tensor. A no-go theorem prohibits the improvement for Goldstone bosons, originating from global internal spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is shown that the no-go theorem can be circumvented in the presence of a dilaton. The latter is a (pseudo) Goldstone boson originating from spontaneous conformal symmetry breaking in a theory with an infrared fixed point. Specifically, the tracelessness of the energy momentum tensor is demonstrated for a generic $d$-dimensional curved space. Additionally, the Goldstone gravitational form factors are shown to obey conformality constraints in the soft limit. The crucial point is that the remainder term of the soft theorem is non-zero due to the presence of the dilaton pole. For Goldstone systems with a trivial infrared fixed point the leading order analysis of this paper ought to be sufficient. Exclusive semileptonic $b$ hadron decays ($b \to u \ell \nu$) serve as a sandbox for probing strong and electroweak interactions and for extracting the CKM element $V_{ub}$. Instead, this work investigates their underexplored potential to reveal new short-distance physics. Utilizing SMEFT as a conduit to chart territory beyond the SM, we demonstrate that substantive new physics contributions in $b \to u \ell \nu$ are necessarily linked to correlated effects in rare neutral-current $b$ decays, neutral $B$ meson mixing or high-mass Drell-Yan tails. We find that measurements of the latter processes strongly restrict the allowed deviations in the former. A complete set of tree-level mediators, originating from a perturbative ultraviolet model and matching at dimension 6, is thoroughly explored to support this assertion. As a showcase application, we examine the feasibility of a new physics interpretation of the recent tension in exclusive $|V_{ub}|$ extraction from $B \to V \ell \nu$ where $V=(\rho,\omega)$., Comment: 42 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

We compute the spectrum of the low-lying mesonic states with vector, scalar and pseudoscalar quantum numbers in QCD with one flavour. With three colours the fundamental and the two-index anti-symmetric representations of the gauge group coincide. The latter is an orientifold theory that maps into the bosonic sector of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ super Yang-Mills theory in the large number of colours limit. We employ Wilson fermions along with tree-level improvement in the gluonic and fermionic parts of the action. In this setup the Dirac operator can develop real negative eigenvalues. We therefore perform a detailed study in order to identify configurations where the fermion determinant is negative and eventually reweight them. We finally compare results with effective field theory predictions valid in the large $N_C$ limit and find reasonably consistent values despite $N_C$ being only three. The possibility that gauge theories with chiral symmetry breaking exhibit an infrared fixed point is explored. First, explicit symmetry breaking by a quark mass term and renormalisation group arguments, with reasonable assumptions, imply that the quark mass anomalous dimension at the infrared fixed point is $\gamma_* = 1$. Second, the value $\gamma_* = 1$ is compatible with the long-distance interpretation of the adjoint scalar correlation function and leading order chiral perturbation theory. Third, the value $\gamma_* =1$ gives rise to a consistent matching of the trace anomaly and the Feynman-Hellmann theorem. This suggests the following picture for the conformal window. Close to its upper boundary $\gamma_*$ is zero and grows as the number of fermion is reduced until $\gamma_*=1$ is reached where chiral symmetry breaking sets in, marking its lower boundary. We address the nonperturbative calculation of the inclusive decay rate of semileptonic $B_{(s)}$-meson decays from lattice QCD. Precise Standard-Model predictions are key ingredients in searches for new physics, and this type of computation may eventually provide new insight into the long-standing tension between the inclusive and exclusive determinations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. We present results from a pilot lattice computation for $B_s \rightarrow X_c\, l \nu_l$, where the initial $b$ quark described by the relativistic-heavy-quark (RHQ) formalism on the lattice and the other valence quarks discretised with domain-wall fermions are simulated approximately at their physical quark masses. We compare two different methods for computing the decay rate from lattice data of Euclidean $n$-point functions, namely Chebyshev and Backus-Gilbert approaches. We further study how much the ground-state meson dominates the inclusive decay rate and indicate our strategy towards a computation with a more comprehensive systematic error budget., Comment: 43 pages, 18 figures

There is increasing interest in the study of nonperturbative aspects of three-dimensional quantum field theories (QFT). They appear as holographic dual to theories of (strongly coupled) gravity. For instance, in Holographic Cosmology, the two-point function of the Energy-Momentum Tensor (EMT) of a particular class of three-dimensional QFTs can be mapped into the power spectrum of the Cosmic Microwave Background in the gravitational theory. However, the presence of divergent contact terms poses challenges in extracting a renormalised EMT two-point function on the lattice. Using a $\phi^4$ theory of adjoint scalars valued in the $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ Lie Algebra as a proof-of-concept motivated by Holographic Cosmology, we apply a novel method for filtering out such contact terms by making use of infinitely differentiable "bump" functions which enforce a smooth window that excludes contributions at zero spatial separation. The process effectively removes the local contact terms and allows us to extract the continuum limit behaviour of the renormalised EMT two-point function., Comment: Proceedings for the 39th International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory

Semileptonic $B_s \to K \ell \nu$ decays provide an alternative $b$-decay channel to determine the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$, and to obtain a $R$-ratio to investigate lepton-flavor-universality violations. Results for the CKM matrix element may also shed light on the discrepancies seen between analyses of inclusive or exclusive decays. We calculate the decay form factors using lattice QCD with domain-wall light quarks and a relativistic $b$-quark. We analyze data at three lattice spacings with unitary pion masses down to $268\,\mathrm{MeV}$. Our numerical results are interpolated/extrapolated to physical quark masses and to the continuum to obtain the vector and scalar form factors $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ with full error budgets at $q^2$ values spanning the range accessible in our simulations. We provide a possible explanation of tensions found between results for the form factor from different lattice collaborations. Model- and truncation-independent $z$-parameterization fits following a recently proposed Bayesian-inference approach extend our results to the entire allowed kinematic range. Our results can be combined with experimental measurements of $B_s \to D_s$ and $B_s\to K$ semileptonic decays to determine $|V_{ub}|=3.8(6)\times 10^{-3}$. The error is currently dominated by experiment. We use one-flavour QCD ($N_c=3$) as a proxy to understand $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM. For our simulations, we use tree-level improved Wilson fermions and Symanzik improved gauge action. The hadron spectrum is obtained by using LapH smearing for different masses and simulation volumes. The decreasing uncertainties in theoretical predictions and experimental measurements of several hadronic observables related to weak processes, which in many cases are now smaller than $\mathrm{O}(1\%)$, require theoretical calculations to include subleading corrections that were neglected so far. Precise determinations of leptonic and semi-leptonic decay rates, including QED and strong isospin-breaking effects, can play a central role in solving the current tensions in the first-row unitarity of the CKM matrix. In this work we present the first RBC/UKQCD lattice calculation of the isospin-breaking corrections to the ratio of leptonic decay rates of kaons and pions into muons and neutrinos. The calculation is performed with $N_\mathrm{f}=2+1$ dynamical quarks close to the physical point and domain wall fermions in the M\"obius formulation are employed. Long-distance QED interactions are included according to the $\mathrm{QED_L}$ prescription and the crucial role of finite-volume electromagnetic corrections in the determination of leptonic decay rates, which produce a large systematic uncertainty, is extensively discussed. Finally, we study the different sources of uncertainty on $|V_\mathrm{us}|/|V_\mathrm{ud}|$ and observe that, if finite-volume systematics can be reduced, the error from isospin-breaking corrections is potentially sub-dominant in the final precision of the ratio of the CKM matrix elements., Comment: 66 pages, 23 figures and 4 tables

We present our calculations for the $I$ = 1/2 and 3/2 $K-\pi$ s-wave scattering length with physical quark masses, extracted from the interaction energy of Euclidean two-point functions. We use the domain wall fermion action with physical quark masses at a single lattice spacing. We are specifically interested in the systematic effects due to around-the-world terms on the overall determination of the scattering length. We compute the standard Euclidean window of the hadronic vacuum polarization using multiple independent blinded analyses. We improve the continuum and infinite-volume extrapolations of the dominant quark-connected light-quark isospin-symmetric contribution and address additional sub-leading systematic effects from sea-charm quarks and residual chiral-symmetry breaking from first principles. We find $a_\mu^{\rm W} = 235.56(65)(50) \times 10^{-10}$, which is in $3.8\sigma$ tension with the recently published dispersive result of Colangelo et al., $a_\mu^{\rm W} = 229.4(1.4) \times 10^{-10}$, and in agreement with other recent lattice determinations. We also provide a result for the standard short-distance window. Phase transitions in a non-perturbative regime can be studied by ab initio Lattice Field Theory methods. The status and future research directions for LFT investigations of Quantum Chromo-Dynamics under extreme conditions are reviewed, including properties of hadrons and of the hypothesized QCD axion as inferred from QCD topology in different phases. We discuss phase transitions in strong interactions in an extended parameter space, and the possibility of model building for Dark Matter and Electro-Weak Symmetry Breaking. The stochastic Laplacian Heaviside (LapH) method has proven to be successful in hadronic calculations. In this work, with charm-light spectroscopy in mind, we set up and optimise the LapH procedure limiting ourselves to the evaluation of two-point mesonic correlation functions. The calculations are performed on CLS ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ Wilson-Clover fermions on a $32^3\times64$ lattice with open boundary conditions. We compute the electromagnetic mass difference for the $B$-, $D$- and $K$-mesons using QCD sum rules with double dispersion relations. For the $B$- and $D$-mesons we also compute the linear quark mass correction, whereas for the $K$ the standard soft theorems prove more powerful. The mass differences, which have not previously been computed via a double dispersion, are fully consistent with experiment, albeit with large uncertainties., Comment: pp17 plus refs and 2 figures

Following the publication of the new measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the discrepancy between experiment and the theory prediction from the $g-2$ theory initiative has increased to $4.2\,\sigma$. Recent lattice QCD calculations predict values for the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution that are larger than the data-driven estimates, bringing the Standard Model prediction closer to the experimental measurement. Euclidean time windows in the time-momentum representation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g-2$ can help clarify the discrepancy between the phenomenological and lattice predictions. We present our calculation of the intermediate distance window contribution using $N_\mathrm{f}=2+1$ flavors of O$(a)$ improved Wilson quarks. We employ ensembles at six lattice spacings below $0.1\,$fm and pion masses down to the physical value. We present a detailed study of the continuum limit, using two discretizations of the vector current and two independent sets of improvement coefficients. We review the current status of the long-term programme of numerical investigation of $Sp(2N)$ gauge theories with and without fermionic matter content. We start by introducing the phenomenological as well as theoretical motivations for this research programme, which are related to composite Higgs models, models of partial top compositeness, dark matter models, and in general to the physics of strongly coupled theories and their approach to the large-N limit. We summarise the results of lattice studies conducted so far in the $Sp(2N)$ Yang-Mills theories, measuring the string tension, the mass spectrum of glueballs and the topological susceptibility, and discuss their large-N extrapolation. We then focus our discussion on $Sp(4)$, and summarise numerical measurements of mass and decay constant of mesons in the theories with fermion matter in either the fundamental or the antisymmetric representation, first in the quenched approximation, and then with dynamical fermions. We finally discuss the case of dynamical fermions in mixed representations, and exotic composite fermion states such as the chimera baryons. We conclude by sketching the future stages of the programme. Quantum computers offer an intriguing path for a paradigmatic change of computing in the natural sciences and beyond, with the potential for achieving a so-called quantum advantage, namely a significant (in some cases exponential) speed-up of numerical simulations. The rapid development of hardware devices with various realizations of qubits enables the execution of small scale but representative applications on quantum computers. In particular, the high-energy physics community plays a pivotal role in accessing the power of quantum computing, since the field is a driving source for challenging computational problems. This concerns, on the theoretical side, the exploration of models which are very hard or even impossible to address with classical techniques and, on the experimental side, the enormous data challenge of newly emerging experiments, such as the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider. In this roadmap paper, led by CERN, DESY and IBM, we provide the status of high-energy physics quantum computations and give examples for theoretical and experimental target benchmark applications, which can be addressed in the near future. Having the IBM 100 x 100 challenge in mind, where possible, we also provide resource estimates for the examples given using error mitigated quantum computing.

We propose a model-independent framework for fitting hadronic form-factor data, which is often only available at discrete kinematical points, using parameterisations based on to unitarity and analyticity. In this novel approach the latter two properties of quantum-field theory regulate the ill-posed fitting problem and allow model-independent predictions over the entire physical range. Kinematical constraints, for example for the vector and scalar form factors in semileptonic meson decays, can be imposed exactly. The core formulae are straight-forward to implement with standard math libraries. We take account of a generalisation of the original Boyd~Grinstein~Lebed (BGL) unitarity constraint for form factors and demonstrate our method for the exclusive semileptonic decay $B_s\to K \ell \nu$, for which we make a number of phenomenologically relevant predictions, including the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$., Comment: 45 pages, 8 figures, references added, typos fixed

We perform a non-perturbative lattice calculation of the decay rates for inclusive semi-leptonic decays of charmed mesons. In view of the long-standing tension in the determination of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$ from exclusive and inclusive processes, recently, the use of lattice QCD has been extended towards the description of inclusive decays. Since the determination of hadronic input parameters from QCD based methods require independent tests, we focus on the charm sector, since it not only offers experimental data, but also well determined CKM parameters. We carry out a pilot lattice simulation for the $D_s \rightarrow X_s \ell\nu$ and explore the improvement of existing techniques. Our simulation employs M\"obius domain-wall charm and strange quarks whose masses are tuned to be approximately physical and we cover the whole kinematical region. We present the preliminary results of the non-perturbative running of the flavour non-singlet tensor operator in the high-energy range $2~\rm{GeV}\lesssim \mu\lesssim 128~\rm{GeV}$ in $N_f=3$ massless QCD, comparing four different definitions of the renormalisation constant. We use the configuration ensembles of arXiv:1802.05243 and arXiv:1607.06423, subject to Schroedinger functional (SF) boundary conditions, and valence quarks with chirally rotated Schroedinger functional ($\chi$SF) boundary conditions. Provided that boundary counterterms have been appropriately tuned, this results in O($a$) improvement of the tensor operator, without the need of a dimension-4 Symanzik counterterm (proportional to $c_T$). Non-perturbatively computing the hadronic vacuum polarization at large photon virtualities and making contact with perturbation theory enables a precision determination of the electromagnetic coupling at the $Z$ pole, which enters global electroweak fits. In order to achieve this goal ab initio using lattice QCD, one faces the challenge that, at the short distances which dominate the observable, discretization errors are hard to control. Here we address challenges of this type with the help of static screening correlators in the high-temperature phase of QCD, yet without incurring any bias. The idea is motivated by the observations that (a) the cost of high-temperature simulations is typically much lower than their vacuum counterpart, and (b) at distances $x_3$ far below the inverse temperature $1/T$, the operator-product expansion guarantees the thermal correlator of two local currents to deviate from the vacuum correlator by a relative amount that is power-suppressed in $(x_3\:T)$. The method is first investigated in lattice perturbation theory, where we point out the appearance of an O$(a^2 \log(1/a))$ lattice artifact in the vacuum polarization with a prefactor that we calculate. It is then applied to non-perturbative lattice QCD data with two dynamical flavors of quarks. Our lattice spacings range down to 0.049 fm for the vacuum simulations and down to 0.033 fm for the simulations performed at a temperature of 250 MeV., 32 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables

Real-time evolution of quantum field theories using classical computers requires resources that scale exponentially with the number of lattice sites. Because of a fundamentally different computational strategy, quantum computers can in principle be used to perform detailed studies of these dynamics from first principles. Before performing such calculations, it is important to ensure that the quantum algorithms used do not have a cost that scales exponentially with the volume. In these proceedings, we present an interesting test case: a formulation of a compact U(1) gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions free of gauge redundancies. A naive implementation onto a quantum circuit has a gate count that scales exponentially with the volume. We discuss how to break this exponential scaling by performing an operator redefinition that reduces the non-locality of the Hamiltonian. We report on the physical-point RBC/UKQCD calculation of the leading isospin-breaking corrections to light-meson leptonic decays. This is highly relevant for future precision tests in the flavour physics sector, in particular the first-row unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix containing the elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$. The simulations were performed using Domain-Wall fermions for $2+1$ flavours, and with isospin-breaking effects included perturbatively in the path integral through order $\alpha$ and $(m_u - m_d)/\Lambda _{\mathrm{QCD}}$. We present a strategy to study QCD non-perturbatively on the lattice at very high temperatures. This strategy exploits a non-perturbative, finite-volume, definition of the strong coupling constant to renormalize the theory. As a first application we compute the flavor non-singlet mesonic screening masses in a wide range of temperature, from $T\sim 1 $ GeV up to $\sim 160 $ GeV with three flavors in the chiral limit of QCD. Our results show very interesting features of the screening spectrum at very high temperatures. On one hand the mass splitting between the vector and the pseudoscalar screening masses is clearly visible up to the electroweak scale and cannot be explained by the known 1-loop perturbative result. On the other hand the restoration of chiral symmetry manifests itself through the degeneracy of the pseudoscalar and the scalar channels and of the vector and the axial-vector ones. We present our progresses in the use of the non-perturbative renormalization framework based on considering QCD at finite temperature with shifted and twisted (for quarks only) boundary conditions in the compact direction. We report our final results in the application of this method for the non-perturbative renormalization of the flavor-singlet local vector current. We discuss a strategy to study non-perturbatively QCD up to very high temperatures by Monte Carlo simulations on the lattice. It allows not only the thermodynamic properties of the theory but also other interesting thermal features to be investigated. As a first concrete application, we compute the flavour non-singlet mesonic screening masses and we present the results of Monte Carlo simulations at 12 temperatures covering the range from T $\sim$ 1 GeV up to $\sim$ 160 GeV in the theory with three massless quarks. On the one side, chiral symmetry restoration manifests itself in our results through the degeneracy of the vector and the axial vector channels and of the scalar and the pseudoscalar ones, and, on the other side, we observe a clear splitting between the vector and the pseudoscalar screening masses up to the highest investigated temperature. A comparison with the high-temperature effective theory shows that the known one-loop order in the perturbative expansion does not provide a satisfactory description of the non-perturbative data up to the highest temperature considered., 6 pages, 3 figures; contribution to the proceedings of the International Conference on High Energy Physics (ICHEP 2022), July 6-13, 2022, Bologna (Italy)

Sp($2N$) gauge theories with fermonic matter provide an ideal laboratory to build extensions of the standard model based on novel composite dynamics. Examples include composite Higgs along with top partial compositeness and composite dark matter. Without fermions, their study also complements those based on SU($N_c$) gauge theories with which they share a common sector in the large $N_c=2N$ limit. We report on our recent progress in the numerical studies of Sp($2N$) gauge theories discretised on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice. In particular, we present preliminary results for the low-lying mass spectra of mesons and chimera baryons in the theories with $N=2$. We derive analytic expansions for the finite-volume energies of weakly-interacting two-particle systems, using the general relations between scattering amplitudes and energies derived by L\"uscher and others. The relations hold for ground and excited states with both zero and non-zero total momentum in the finite-volume frame. A number of instructive aspects arise in the derivation, including the role of accidental degeneracies and the importance of defining a power-counting scheme in the expansions. The results give intuition concerning the imprint of weakly-interacting systems on the energy spectrum, while also providing a useful basis for the analogous results concerning three-particle excited states, to appear., Comment: 34 pages, 2 figures, 9 tables, CERN-TH-2021-133

Computing plays a significant role in all areas of high energy physics. The Snowmass 2021 CompF4 topical group's scope is facilities R&D, where we consider "facilities" as the computing hardware and software infrastructure inside the data centers plus the networking between data centers, irrespective of who owns them, and what policies are applied for using them. In other words, it includes commercial clouds, federally funded High Performance Computing (HPC) systems for all of science, and systems funded explicitly for a given experimental or theoretical program. We analyze the impact of the θ-angle and axion dynamics for two-color (in fact any Sp(2N )) QCD at nonzero baryon charge and as a function of the number of matter fields on the vacuum properties, the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking as well as the spectrum of the theory. We show that the vacuum acquires a rich structure when the underlying CP violating topological operator is added to the theory. We discover novel phases and analyse the order of their transitions characterizing the dynamics of the odd and even number of flavours. We further determine the critical chemical potential as function of the θ angle separating the normal from the superfluid phase of the theory. Our results will guide numerical simulations and novel tests of the model’s dynamics. The results are also expected to better inform phenomenological applications of the model ranging from composite Higgs physics to strongly interacting massive dark matter models featuring number changing interactions. In the companion work [1] we repurpose and upgrade the approach to determine the impact of the θ-angle and axion physics on non-perturbative near conformal dynamics related to the fixed baryon charge sector. For many quantum systems of interest, the classical computational cost of simulating their time evolution scales exponentially in the system size. At the same time, quantum computers have been shown to allow for simulations of some of these systems using resources that scale polynomially with the system size. Given the potential for using quantum computers for simulations that are not feasible using classical devices, it is paramount that one studies the scaling of quantum algorithms carefully. This work identifies a term in the Hamiltonian of a class of constrained systems that naively requires quantum resources that scale exponentially in the system size. An important example is a compact U(1) gauge theory on lattices with periodic boundary conditions. Imposing the magnetic Gauss' law a priori introduces a constraint into that Hamiltonian that naively results in an exponentially deep circuit. A method is then developed that reduces this scaling to polynomial in the system size, using a redefinition of the operator basis. An explicit construction of the matrices defining the change of operator basis, as well as the scaling of the associated computational cost, is given., Comment: 9 pages, 1 Figure. In the holographic approach to cosmology, cosmological observables are described in terms of correlators of a three-dimensional boundary quantum field theory. As a concrete model, we study the $3D$ massless $SU(N)$ scalar matrix field theory with a $\phi^4$ interaction. On the lattice, the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) in this theory can mix with the operator $\phi^2$. We utilize the Wilson Flow to renormalize the EMT on the lattice, and present numerical results for the mixing coefficient for $N = 2$. Physical review / D 106(11), 114502 (2022). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.106.114502, Euclidean time windows in the integral representation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon g-2 serve to test the consistency of lattice calculations and may help in tracing the origins of a potential tension between lattice and data-driven evaluations. In this paper, we present results for the intermediate time window observable computed using O(a) improved Wilson fermions at six values of the lattice spacings below 0.1 fm and pion masses down to the physical value. Using two different sets of improvement coefficients in the definitions of the local and conserved vector currents, we perform a detailed scaling study which results in a fully controlled extrapolation to the continuum limit without any additional treatment of the data, except for the inclusion of finite-volume corrections. To determine the latter, we use a combination of the method of Hansen and Patella and the Meyer-Lellouch-Lüscher procedure employing the Gounaris-Sakurai parametrization for the pion form factor. We correct our results for isospin-breaking effects via the perturbative expansion of QCD+QED around the isosymmetric theory. Our result at the physical point is $a_μ^{win}$=(237.30±0.79$_{stat}$±1.22$_{syst}$) × 10$^{-10}$, where the systematic error includes an estimate of the uncertainty due to the quenched charm quark in our calculation. We discuss our lattice QCD calculations of a number of tetraquark channels with at least one heavy quark where some phenomenological models, already fully constrained by fits to the ordinary meson and baryon spectrum, predict deep binding. We find no evidence of deeply-bound tetraquarks, except in previously established strong-interaction stable $I=0$, $J^P=1^+$, $ud\bar{b}\bar{b}$ and $I=1/2$, $J^P=1^+$ $\ell s\bar{b}\bar{b}$ (where $\ell=u/d$) channels, allowing us to rule out models predicting deep binding. Preliminary results from an updated analysis of doubly-bottom tetraquarks are also presented.

This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. The "Cabibbo Angle Anomaly" (CAA) originates from the disagreement between the CKM elements $V_{ud}$ and $V_{us}$ extracted from superallowed beta and kaon decays, respectively, once compared via CKM unitarity. It points towards new physics with a significance of up to $4\,\sigma$, depending on the theoretical input used, and can be explained through modified $W$ couplings to leptons. In this context, vector-like leptons (VLLs) are prime candidates for a corresponding UV completion since they can affect $W\ell\nu$ couplings at tree-level, such that this modification can have the dominant phenomenological impact. In order to consistently asses the agreement with the data, a global fit is necessary which we perform for gauge-invariant dimension-6 operators and all patterns obtained for the six possible representations (under the SM gauge group) of VLLs. We find that even in the lepton flavour universal case, including the measurements of the CKM elements $V_{us}$ and $V_{ud}$ into the electroweak fit has a relevant impact, shifting the best fit point significantly. Concerning the VLLs we discuss the bounds from charged lepton flavour violating processes and observe that a single representation cannot describe experimental data significantly better than the SM hypothesis. However, allowing for several representations of VLLs at the same time, we find that the simple scenario in which $N$ couples to electrons via the Higgs and $\Sigma_1$ couples to muons not only explains the CAA but also improves the rest of the electroweak fit in such a way that its best fit point is preferred by more than $4\,\sigma$ with respect to the SM., Comment: Version accepted for publication in JHEP, 34 pages, 9 figures, 7 tables, typos corrected

We study good, bad and not-even-bad diquarks on the lattice in a gauge-invariant formalism in full QCD. We establish their spectral masses with short extrapolations to the physical point, observing agreement with phenomenological expectations. We find that only the good diquark has attractive quark-quark spatial correlations, with spherical shape and size $\sim0.6$ fm. The subject is closely related to the muon $g-2$ via the HVP. Both precision tests come under scrutiny with respect to physics Beyond the Standard Model. Our HVP calculation is used for the running electromagnetic coupling at low energy and linked at various matching energies to the higher energy running evaluated by phenomenological approaches. We predict the electromagnetic coupling at the Z-pole ($\Delta\alpha^{(5)}_{\text{had}}(M^{2}_{Z})$), providing a lattice-driven input to EW-global fits. Our preliminary $\Delta\alpha^{(5)}_{\text{had}}(M^{2}_{Z})$ is stable for a wide range of matching energies and comes with various systematics taken into account and consistent with phenomenological estimates., Published by SISSA, Trieste

Partially twisted boundary conditions are widely used for improving the momentum resolution in lattice computations of hadronic correlation functions. The method is however expensive since every additional twist requires computing additional propagators. We propose a novel variance reduction technique that exploits statistical correlations to reduce the overall cost for computing correlators with additional twist angles. We explain and demonstrate the method for meson 2pt and 3pt functions. Partially twisted boundary conditions are widely used for improving the momentum resolution in lattice computations of hadronic correlation functions. The method is however expensive since every additional twist requires computing additional propagators. We are presenting our ongoing Lattice QCD study on $B - \bar{B}$ mixing on several RBC/UKQCD and JLQCD ensembles with 2+1 dynamical-flavour domain-wall fermions, including physical-pion-mass ensembles. We are extracting bag parameters $B_{B_d}$ and $B_{B_s}$ using the full 5-mixing-operator basis to study both Standard-Model mixing as well as Beyond the Standard Model mixing, using a fully correlated combined fit to two-point functions and ratios of three-point and two-point functions. Using 15 different lattice ensembles we are simulating a range of heavy-quark masses from below the charm-quark mass to just below the bottom-quark mass. We present a strategy based on the step-scaling technique to study non-perturbatively thermal QCD up to very high temperatures. As a first concrete application, we compute the flavour non-singlet meson screening masses at 12 temperatures covering the range from $T \sim 1$ GeV up to $\sim 160$ GeV in the theory with three massless quarks. The calculation is carried out by Monte Carlo simulations on the lattice by considering large spatial extensions in order to have negligible finite volume effects. For each temperature we have simulated 3 or 4 values of the lattice spacing, so as to perform the continuum limit extrapolation with confidence at a few permille accuracy. Chiral symmetry restoration manifests itself in our results through the degeneracy of the vector and the axial vector channels and of the scalar and the pseudoscalar ones. In the entire range of temperatures explored, the meson screening masses deviate from the free theory result, $2 \pi T$, by at most a few percent. These deviations, however, cannot be explained by the known leading term in the QCD coupling constant $g$ up to the highest temperature, where other contributions are still very relevant. In particular the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting turns out to be of $O(g^4)$ in the entire range explored, and it remains clearly visible up to the highest temperature, where the two screening masses are still significantly different within our numerical precision. The pattern of different contributions that we have found explains why it has been difficult in the past to match non-perturbative lattice results at $T \sim 1$ GeV with the analytic behaviour at asymptotically high temperatures., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures. We critically analyze the body of results that hints to the existence of New Physics from possible violations of lepton universality observed by the LHCb experiment in the μ/e ratios R$_{K}$ and $ {R}_{K^{\ast }} $ to the g − 2 lepton anomalies. The analysis begins with a theoretical, in depth, study of the μ/e ratios R$_{K}$ and $ {R}_{K^{\ast }} $ as well as the process B$_{s}$→ μ$^{+}$μ$^{−}$. Here we consider the impact of complex Wilson coefficients and derive constraints on their imaginary and real parts. We then move to a comprehensive comparison with experimental results. We show that, by fitting a single Wilson coefficient, the deviations from the Standard Model are at the 4.7σ level when including only the hadronic insensitive observables while it increases to 6.1σ when including also the hadronic sensitive ones. When switching on all relevant Wilson coefficients and combining both hadronic sensitive and insensitive data into the fit, the deviation from the Standard Model peaks at 7.2σ and decreases at the 4.9σ level if we assume that the central values of R$_{K}$ and $ {R}_K^{\ast } $ are taken to be unity. We further estimate other unaccounted for SM contributions and show that their inclusion still requires New Physics to fit the data. We then introduce the g − 2 lepton anomalies as well as the most recent W-mass results. Different theoretical models are considered that can explain the discrepancies from the Standard Model. In the final part of our work we estimate the impact of the forthcoming data from LHCb (coming from LHC Run3) and Belle II, when it will have accumulated about 5 ab$^{−1}$. We compute non-perturbatively the renormalization constant of the flavour-singlet local vector current $Z_V$ in lattice QCD with 3 massless flavours. Gluons are discretized by the Wilson plaquette action while quarks by the O($a$)-improved Wilson--Dirac operator. The constant $Z_V$ is fixed by comparing the expectation values (1-point functions) of the conserved and local vector currents at finite temperature in the presence of shifted boundary conditions and at non-zero imaginary chemical potential. Monte Carlo simulations with a moderate computational cost allow us to obtain $Z_V$ with an accuracy of about 8\textperthousand\, for values of the inverse bare coupling constant $\beta=6/g_0^2$ in the range $5.3 \leq \beta \leq 11.5$., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, minor changes

Leptoquarks provide viable solutions to the flavour anomalies, i.e. they can explain the tensions between the measurements and the Standard Model predictions of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon as well as $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ and $b\to c\tau\nu$ processes. However, leptoquarks also contribute to other flavour observables, such as $\Delta F=2$ processes, at the loop-level. In particular, $B_s-\bar B_s$ mixing provides a crucial bound in setups addressing $b\to c\tau\nu$ data, often excluding a big portion of the parameter space that could otherwise account for it. In this article, we first derive the complete leading order matching, including all five scalar LQ representations, for $D^0-\bar D^0$, $K^0-\bar K^0$ and $B_{s,d}-\bar B_{s,d}$ mixing (at the dimension-six level). We then calculate the next-to-leading order $\alpha_s$ matching corrections to these $\Delta F=2$ processes in generic scalar leptoquark models. We find that the two-loop corrections increase the effects in $\Delta F=2$ processes by $\sim 5$-$10\%$ and significantly reduce the matching scale uncertainty., Comment: 23 pages + references, 3 figures. We report the first calculation using physical light-quark masses of the electromagnetic form factor $V(z)$ describing the long-distance contributions to the $K^+\to\pi^+\ell^+\ell^-$ decay amplitude. The calculation is performed on a 2+1 flavor domain wall fermion ensemble with inverse lattice spacing $a^{-1}=1.730(4)$GeV. We implement a Glashow-Iliopoulos-Maiani cancellation by extrapolating to the physical charm-quark mass from three below-charm masses. We obtain $V(z=0.013(2))=-0.87(4.44)$, achieving a bound for the value. The large statistical error arises from stochastically estimated quark loops., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures
