The hard X-ray experiment (1 - 28 keV) on ANS, observed Cygnus X-1 in November 1974, and in May 1975, putting in evidence the two dramatically different states of this object. The average intensity in November was 15 cts/sec, and the observations showed remarkable features in the X-ray light curve and in the spectrum, which were correlated with the 5.6 days period of HDE226868. The May observations showed a count rate of approximately 80-100 cts/sec, with fluctuations up to approximately 130 cts/sec, uncorrelated with the spectroscopic binary. The May X-ray spectrum was much softer than the November one, and possibly was made up of two components.

The hard X-ray experiment (1 - 28 keV) on ANS observed Cygnus X-3 in November 1974, and in May 1975. The average flux intensities for these time periods were found to be 22.4 + or - 0.5 cts/sec and 12.8 + or - 0.3 cts/sec (1.3 - 7.1 keV), the former being the highest average value ever observed. The spectrum studies show an excess in the flux above the fitted continuum which can be interpreted as a line emission of FeXXIV and/or FeXXV, at approximately 6.5 keV. The strength of this feature varied in phase with the 4.8 hr X-ray modulation, and remained at a constant relative intensity. The period of the X-ray modulation is refined to 0.1996813 + or - 0.0000006 day and obtained at a 2 sigma upper limit to a continuous change in the period of 50 to the minus 13th power/sec. This new limit places serious constraints on several models for this object.

Preliminary results from the Bragg crystal spectrometer on the ANS satellite are given. No significant Si XIII and Si XIV narrow line emission has been detected from Cygnus X-1, -2, or -3.

Normalized autocorrelation and cross-correlation coefficients have been calculated for the X-ray emission of Cygnus X-1 in two energy bins, 2.1-5.1 keV and 5.1-12 keV. The analysis shows a strong correlation between the pulsations in the two energy bins, with the low-energy pulsations lagging behind the high-energy ones, or alternatively a shorter duration of the pulse trains in the high-energy bin. The power spectral density derived from the autocorrelation functions indicates a larger contribution of the high-frequency components for the higher-energy X-rays.

The final results of the search for Si XIII and Si XIV line emission, using the ANS Bragg crystal spectrometer, are presented. No positive line detection was achieved in any of the measurements made on several types of cosmic object; i.e., a transient X-ray source, close binary systems, supernova remnants, GX sources, and clusters of galaxies. Three-sigma upper limits for discrete line emission from these objects are reported and compared with line strengths inferred from other proportional-counter and Bragg spectrometer data. The present upper limit of 1.0 eV for the equivalent width of a narrow Si XIV line emission from the X-ray nova A0620-00 is an order of magnitude lower than previous limits set by other experiments.

Hard X-ray observations by the ANS are used to analyze the energy spectrum and intensity fluctuations on time scales of seconds to days for 20 luminous galactic sources, of which 11 are galactic-bulge (GX) sources having no obvious identification with source categories. It is found that: (1) most GX sources are best fitted in the energy range from about 1 to 20 keV by exponential spectra with a source temperature (kT) of approximately 5 keV; (2) iron line emission around 6.7 keV is always detected as a persistent spectral feature of at least six and possibly seven of the sources studied; (3) most of the iron-line sources exhibit a direct correlation between kT and intensity (I) in the band from 1.4 to 7.2 keV; (4) no burst source counterparts or candidates show a direct correlation between kT and I, at least two show an inverse correlation, and no iron line emission is detected at a 3-sigma level from burster counterparts during burst-active states. A classification scheme for GX sources is proposed, and several observational tests for this scheme and for possible source models are described.

Observations of Cygnus X-3 made by the ANS and Uhuru satellites have shown significant X-ray flux variability on a time scale of hours. No spectral change was observed associated with these fluctuations. Significant intensity and spectral changes were found on a time scale of months with an inverse correlation between the source intensity and the temperature, and possibly the low-energy cutoff. The spectrum studies have confirmed the existence of an excess above the fitted continuum which can be interpreted as line emission of Fe XXIV and/or Fe XXV at about 6.7 keV. Phenomenological models for Cygnus X-3 are discussed; the observational data are best interpreted by assuming that a scattering and absorbing shell is symmetrically placed around the X-ray source.

A significantly improved position for the X-ray source 3U 1921 + 43 has been obtained by ANS and Uhuru. The combined ANS-Uhuru error box is only about 7 by 7 arcmin and is centered on the cD galaxy in the Abell 2319 cluster of galaxies. Radio observations of this cluster indicate that the emission at 610 MHz includes several discrete sources and a weak extended component. This strengthens the general association between extended radio halos and X-ray emission from clusters of galaxies. The radio halo fills the X-ray error box and is consistent with the limits reported for the angular size of the X-ray source

Cygnus X-1 was observed from 3 November until 9 November 1974, using the hard X-ray (1-28 keV) and soft X-ray (1-8 keV) experiment on board the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite. On three occasions, on 4 and 5 November, the X-ray spectrum was observed to be harder, while the flux intensity in the 1-7 keV ranges decreased by about 50% from its quiescent value. These events occurred near and following the time of superior conjunction of the likely optical counterpart HDE 226 868. These events appear to be the same as previously reported absorption dips and reveal this phenomenon to be more complex than had been believed. A systematic study of the X-ray spectral variations in these energy bands, on a time scale of 64 seconds over the period of the spectroscopic binary, is presented.

The X-ray source 3U 1746-37 was observed by the hard X-ray experiment on the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) in March and September 1975. The one-dimensional position band (+ or - 2 arcmin, 90% confidence) obtained reduces the Uhuru error-box area by a factor of 3 and includes the nucleus of the globular cluster NGC 6441.

A new type of time variation of cosmic X-ray sources has been found from the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite (ANS) observations of the source 3U 1820-30, associated with the globular cluster NGC 6624. Two bursts in the 1-30 keV X-ray intensity of this source are reported. Each displayed a rapid rise in flux (no more than 1 s) by a factor of 20-30 followed by an approximately 8-s exponential decay. These bursts appear to be qualitatively different from short time variations previously reported for X-ray sources. Analysis for further source variability, energy spectra, and position is presented. The characteristics of these events may imply the existence of a collapsed core in the globular cluster.

Report on the X-ray intensity observations of Cygnus X-3 performed with the aid of the X-ray satellite, Uhuru, before and during the radio flare of early September 1972. An analysis of 32 transits of the source, obtained during the period August 19 to September 6, is presented. There is no indication of an intensity change coincident with the radio flare. It is concluded that whatever precipitated the radio flare did not have a significant impact on the X-ray emitting region. Other characteristics of Cyg X-3 are also discussed.
