[EN] Water quality may be affected by aspects such as pollution from industries, agricultural fertilizers and pesticides, and waste produced by humans. This contamination can affect the produce of the fields irrigated by untreated water. Therefore, it is necessary to add a treatment process in irrigation systems. In this paper, an architecture, communication protocol, and a data analysis algorithm for a wastewater treatment system intended for irrigation are presented. Our system includes a smart group-based wireless sensor network that is able to detect high salinity levels and pollution stains, such as oil spills. When contamination is detected, the water is led into auxiliary canals that perform the biosorption process to treat the water and dump it back into the main canal. Simulations were performed to assess the amount of data stored on the secure digital (SD) card, the consumed bandwidth, and the energy consumption of our proposal. The results show the system has a low bandwidth consumption with a maximum of 2.58 kbps for the setting of two daily data transmissions of the node in the last auxiliary canal. Furthermore, it can sustain the energy consumption in adverse conditions, where the node with the highest energy consumption reaches the lowest energy value of 12,320 mW/h.

[EN] In irrigation ponds, the excess of nutrients can cause eutrophication, a massive growth of microscopic algae. It might cause different problems in the irrigation infrastructure and should be monitored. In this paper, we present a low-cost sensor based on optical absorption in order to determine the concentration of algae in irrigation ponds. The sensor is composed of 5 LEDs with different wavelengths and light-dependent resistances as photoreceptors. Data are gathered for the calibration of the prototype, including two turbidity sources, sediment and algae, including pure samples and mixed samples. Samples were measured at a different concentration from 15 mg/L to 4000 mg/L. Multiple regression models and artificial neural networks, with a training and validation phase, are compared as two alternative methods to classify the tested samples. Our results indicate that using multiple regression models, it is possible to estimate the concentration of alga with an average absolute error of 32.0 mg/L and an average relative error of 11.0%. On the other hand, it is possible to classify up to 100% of the samples in the validation phase with the artificial neural network. Thus, a novel prototype capable of distinguishing turbidity sources and two classification methodologies, which can be adapted to different node features, are proposed for the operation of the developed prototype.

[EN] Uncontrolled dumping linked to agricultural vehicles causes an increase in the incorporation of oils into the irrigation system. In this paper, we propose a system based on an optical sensor to monitor oil concentration in the irrigation ditches. Our prototype is based on the absorption and dispersion of light. As a light source, we use Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) with different colours (white, yellow, blue, green, and red) and a photodetector as a sensing element. To test the sensor's performance, we incorporate industrial oils used by a diesel or gasoline engine, with a concentration from 0 to 0.20 mL(oil)/cm(2). The experiment was carried out at different water column heights, 0 to 20 cm. According to our results, the sensor can differentiate between the presence or absence of diesel engine oil with any LED. For gasoline engine oil, the sensor quantifies its concentration using the red light source; concentrations greater than 0.1 mL(oil)/cm(2) cannot be distinguished. The data gathered using the red LED has an average absolute error of 0.003 mL(oil)/cm(2) (relative error of 15.8%) for the worst case, 15 cm. Finally, the blue LED generates different signals in the photodetector according to the type of oil. We developed an algorithm that combines (i) the white LED, to monitor the presence of oil; (ii) the blue LED, to identify if the oil comes from a gasoline or diesel engine; and (iii) the red LED, to monitor the concentration of oil used by a gasoline engine.

[EN] Soil moisture control is crucial to assess irrigation efficiency in green areas and agriculture. In this paper, we propose the design and calibration of a sensor based on inductive coils and electromagnetic fields. The proposed prototypes should meet a series of requirements such as low power consumption, low relative error, and a high voltage difference between the minimum and maximum moisture. We tested different prototypes based on two copper coils divided into two different sets (P1-P15 and NP1-NP4). The prototypes have different characteristics: variations in the number and distribution of spires, existence or absence of casing, and copper wires with a diameter of 0.4 or 0.6 mm. In the first set of experiments carried out in commercial soil, the results showed that the best prototypes were P5, P8, and P9. These prototypes were used in different types of soils, and P8 was selected for the subsequent tests. We carried the second set of experiments using soil from an agricultural field. Based on the data gathered, mathematical models for the calibration of prototypes were obtained and verified. In some cases, two equations were used for different moisture intervals in a single prototype. According to the verification results, NP2 is the best prototype for monitoring the moisture in agricultural lands. It presented a difference in induced voltage of 1.8 V, at 500 kHz, between wet and dry soil with a maximum voltage of 5.12 V. The verification of the calibration determined that the calibration using two mathematical models offers better results, with an average absolute error of 2.1% of moisture.

[EN] The increase in the world population has led to new needs for food. Precision Agriculture (PA) is one of the focuses of these policies to optimize the crops and facilitate crop management using technology. Drones have been gaining popularity in PA to perform remote sensing activities such as photo and video capture as well as other activities such as fertilization or scaring animals. These drones could be used as a mobile gateway as well, benefiting from its already designed flight plan. In this paper, we evaluate the adequacy of remote sensing drones to perform gateway functionalities, providing a guide for choosing the best drone parameters for successful WiFi data transmission between sensor nodes and the gateway in PA systems for crop monitoring and management. The novelty of this paper compared with existing mobile gateway proposals is that we are going to test the performance of the drone that is acting as a remote sensing tool to carry a low-cost gateway node to gather the data from the nodes deployed on the field. Taking this in mind, simulations of different scenarios were performed to determine if the data can be transmitted correctly or not considering different flying parameters such as speed (from 1 to 20 m/s) and flying height (from 4 to 104 m) and wireless sensor network parameters such as node density (1 node each 60 m(2) to 1 node each 5000 m(2)) and antenna coverage (25 to 200 m). We have calculated the time that each node remains with connectivity and the time required to send the data to estimate if the connection will be bad, good, or optimal. Results point out that for the maximum node density, there is only one combination that offers good connectivity (lowest velocity, the flying height of 24 m, and antenna with 25 m of coverage). For the other node densities, several combinations of flying height and antenna coverage allows good and optimal connectivity.

[EN] In this paper, we test three prototypes with different characteristics for controlling the quantity of organic fertiliser in the agricultural irrigation system. We use 0.4 mm of copper diameter, distributing in different layers, maintaining the relation of 40 spires for powered coil and 80 for the induced coil. Moreover, we develop sensors with 8, 4, and 2 layers of copper. The coils are powered by a sine wave of 3.3 V peak to peak, and the other part is induced. To verify the functioning of this sensor, we perform several simulations with COMSOL Multiphysics to verify the magnetic field created around the powered coil, as well as the electric field, followed by a series of tests, using six samples between the 0 g/L and 20 g/L of organic fertiliser, and measure their conductivity. First, we find the working frequency doing a sweep for each prototype and four configurations. In this case, for all samples, making a sweep between 10 kHz and 300 kHz. We obtained that in prototype 1 (P1) (coil with 8 layers) the working frequency is around 100 kHz, in P2 (coil with 4 layers) around 110 kHz, and for P3 (coil with 2 layers) around 140 kHz. Then, we calibrate the prototypes measuring the six samples at four different configurations for each sensor to evaluate the possible variances. Likewise, the measures were taken in triplicate to reduce the possible errors. The obtained results show that the maximum difference of induced voltage between the lowest and the highest concentration is for the P2/configuration 4 with 1.84 V. Likewise, we have obtained an optimum correlation of 0.997. Then, we use the other three samples to verify the optimum functioning of the obtained calibrates. Moreover, the ANOVA simple procedure is applied to the data of all prototypes, in the working frequency of each configuration, to verify the significant difference between the values. [EN] Improving water efficiency in farming systems is one of the major challenges of these decades. Water scarcity due to climate change, together with the increasing demand of food, is leading experts from around the world find appropriate indicators for water-use efficiency. In this paper we propose and test different indicators for service delivery performance, productive efficiency, and economic efficiency. Since the characteristics of the studied area and the citrus cropping system in the East of Spain are particular, we include in our analysis two other variables which are key to understanding the changes in the indicators: the obtained productivity, and the applied irrigation. The indicators and these two variables are tested with the information provided by farmers of citrus orchards belonging to an irrigation community from the East of Spain. The effect of different factors, such as cultivated varieties, type of farmer (professional or non-professional), or plantations' size, are evaluated against the productivity and irrigation performance of the evaluated orchards. The effect of excess of irrigation on the indicators is also studied with the previous factors. Finally, an artificial intelligence system is used to predict productive efficiency of an orchard, based on the size and the water supply. Among the proposed indicators, the service delivery performance indicators came out to be the least useful and might provoke overirrigation due to the lack of accuracy of the data used for its calculation. The productive and economic efficiency indicators have been useful to illustrate the remarkable effect that excess of irrigation has on water efficiency, since a reduction of 66% of productive efficiency is found for some of the analysed varieties. On other cases, a reduction of 50% in economic efficiency is detected due to the excess of irrigation. Moreover, the excess of irrigation implied higher economic efficiency in only one of the evaluated varieties.

[ES] Las imágenes satelitales son una forma de teledetección que se puede utilizar para varios fines ecológicos. La teledetección ha sido utilizada incluso para analizar la calidad del agua. Hay muchos índices que utilizan los valores de diferentes bandas para calcular parámetros ambientales. Este TFM estudia el efecto de la cuarentena del COVID-19 en España en el Mar de Alborán. En este ensayo se analizan los cambios en la calidad del agua antes (desde el 3 de febrero) y durante (hasta el 22 de junio) la cuarentena. Las dinámicas estudiadas son relevantes para fines de restauración ambiental. Los índices ya existentes se aplican utilizando ArcGIS y ACOLITE para determinar varios parámetros ambientales. Materia orgánica disuelta coloreada, materia particulada en suspensión, clorofila a y blooms algales son los parámetros estudiados en este proyecto. Los resultados muestran el efecto de las tormentas ya que crean flujos terrestres masivos, así como la evolución de las concentraciones después de tales eventos. Para ello, los resultados se comparan con tablas meteorológicas. Se presenta la existencia de una correlación entre los parámetros (a excepción de los blooms). Además, demuestra el efecto que tiene un impacto humano repentino en un ecosistema que no ha sido perturbado durante meses., [EN] Satellite imaging is a form of remote sensing which can be used for several ecological purposes. Remote sensing has been used even to analyze water quality. There are many indexes which use the values from different bands to calculate environmental parameters. This project studies the effect the COVID19 quarantine in Spain had on the Alboran Sea. The changes in water quality before (since February 3rd) and during (until June 22nd) the quarantine are analyzed in this essay. The dynamics studied are relevant for environmental restoration purposes. Already existing indices are applied using both ArcGIS and ACOLITE to determine several environmental parameters. Colored dissolved organic matter, suspended particulate matter, chlorophyll a and harmful algal blooms are the parameters studied in this project. The results show the effect storms had since they create massive overland flows, as well as the evolution of the concentrations after such events. To do so, the results are compared with weather tables. Furthermore, the existence of a correlation between the parameters (except for the harmful algal blooms) is presented. Moreover, it proves the effect a sudden human impact has on an ecosystem which has been unperturbed for a few months.

[EN] Agricultural production has grown in recent years, increasing the use of Organic Fertilizers (OF). For that reason, the use of these compounds must be controlled in fertigation water. In this paper, we test three prototypes, using different combinations of coils, to determine the amount of OF in the water. A coil is powered by a sine wave of 3.3 peak-to-peak Volts for inducing another coil. The objective of this system is to detect different kinds of problems that can cause incorrect fertilization, which affects the sustainability of agriculture. We present the tests to verify the proper functioning of the prototypes. We test our prototypes by means of different dilutions of OF. The used concentrations of OF are between 0 and 20 g/l. We measure the conductivity for each concentration and the output voltage of our prototypes. The results show that prototype 3 is the one that has the best performance, obtaining 1.47 V of difference between the maximum and minimum output voltage and a good correlation coefficient. Finally, a verification test is carried out; the average error in the different samples tested is 0.2212%.

In this way, WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks) have high relevance to obtain this kind of data. In this paper, we propose a sensor to measure the depth changes in irrigation channels to control the gates opening. It is connected to an Adafruit Feather HUZZAH based on ESP8266, which allows us to build a mobile edge computing system. The developed sensor is based on two coils. Sinus-wave powers the first one, and the second is induced. The coils are winding over a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) that has high resistance for corrosion and low price. Besides, we use copper wire as a conductive metal. We test two different configurations of coils. P1 has five spires for the powered coil (PC) and ten spires for the induced coil (IC). On the other hand, P2 has 40 spires for the PC and 80 spires for the IC. The two prototypes were coiled in one layer. Then, both sensors are tested using a glass bottle where the water column increased with the target to obtain the information of the depth. In both prototypes, the difference of voltage between the maximum and minimum studied depths is more or less the same, 4.46V for P1 and 4.44V for P2. Nevertheless, during the stabilization test, the P1 showed better adaptation for the turbulences than the P2. The P1 shows an oscillation of 0.48V, where the P2 has a maximum fluctuation of 3.2V.

[EN] The use of sensors is common in precision agriculture. Moisture sensors are one of the most used sensors in the systems to control the irrigation. Nonetheless, the currently available sensors to measure the moisture require electrodes to be in contact with the soil. In this study we present a new sensor for soil moisture monitoring which can be encapsulated and could be used for several sorts of soil. The sensors are composed of two copper coils (solenoids) and they are powered with a voltage of 10 peak to peak volts. Fifteen prototypes are tested in order to find the best design for soil moisture monitoring. After obtaining the best prototypes, they are tested in five different sorts of soils. The best prototype has 5 spires on the powered coil and 10 spires on the induced coil. Three of the soils could be modeled with regressions lines with R2 values higher than 0.85. Another prototype, with 80 spires on the powered coil and 40 spires on the induced coil (both on eight layers), shows a similar response to the other two sorts of soil. Es proven quinze prototips per trobar el millor disseny per al seguiment de la humitat del sòl. Després d'obtenir els millors prototips, es proven en cinc tipus diferents de sòls. [EN] The detection of weeds in lawns is important due to the different negative effects of its presence. Those effects include a lack of uniformity and competition for the resources. If the weeds are detected early the phytosanitary treatment, which includes the use of toxic substances, will be more effective and will be applied to a smaller surface. In this paper, we propose the use of image processing techniques for weed detection in urban lawns. The proposed methodology is based on simple techniques in order to ensure that they can be applied in-situ. We propose two techniques, one of them is based on the mathematical combination of the red, green and blue bands of an image. In this case, two mathematical operations are proposed to detect the presence of weeds, according to the different colorations of plants. On the other hand, we proposed the use of edge detection techniques to differentiate the surface covered by grass from the surface covered by weeds. In this case, we compared 12 different filters and their combinations. The best results were obtained with the Laplacian filter. Moreover, we proposed to use pre-processing and post-processing operations to remove the soil and to aggregate the data with the aim of reducing the number of false positives. Finally, we compared both methods and their combination. Our results show that both methods are promising, and its combination reduces the number of false positives (0 false positives in the 4 evaluated images) ensuring the detection of all weeds.

[EN] Living longer and healthier is the wish of all patients. Therefore, to design effective solutions for this objective, the concept of Big Data in the health field can be integrated. Our work proposes a patient monitoring system based on Internet of Things (IoT) and a diagnostic prediction tool for diabetic patients. This system provides real-time blood glucose readings and information on blood glucose levels. It monitors blood glucose levels at regular intervals. The proposed system aims to prevent high blood sugar and significant glucose fluctuations. The system provides a precise result. The collected and stored data will be classified by using several classification algorithms to predict glucose levels in diabetic patients. The main advantage of this system is that the blood glucose level is reported instantly; it can be lowered or increased.

La piscicultura es un método cada vez más utilizado para proporcionar alimento a la creciente demanda de la población. Pero la cría y alimentación de estos peces de piscifactoría supone un coste muy elevado. La materia de alimento proporcionado no es ingerida y se precipita al fondo de los tanques. Esto sucede debido a que no se sabe cuándo los peces necesitan alimentarse. El objetivo de este Trabajo Final de Máster es intentar monitorizar el movimiento de los peces en los tanques de piscifactoría, realizando diferentes pruebas con sensores físicos. Concretamente con sensores ópticos LDR. Con esto se quiere lograr relacionar el cambio de movimiento de los peces con la intensidad lumínica captada con el sensor. Esto a la vez, relacionarlo con signos de hambre, con el cual se reducirían los costes de alimentación en las piscifactorías. En este proyecto se han realizado 4 tomas de medidas, seccionadas en 4 fases. Inicialmente, se comparan dos sensores físicos de distintas características, en donde uno de ellos se descarta debido a que no ofrece un resultado satisfactorio. A continuación, se tomarán medidas con el sensor seleccionado, cogiendo medidas de los dos laterales de la pecera. Una vez, realizado estas tomas de medidas, se decide repetir el proceso pero escogiendo esta vez 3 medidas por cada punto para poder obtener datos más representativos. Finalmente, una vez comprobado que el sensor escogido es el idóneo, se decide realizar una última prueba con un pez de verdad, para recrear lo máximo posible las condiciones reales. Para ello, se introduce el pez en la pecera cada 2 segundos durante 30 segundos. Cuando el individuo pasa frente al sensor, este muestra valores entre el 14k¿ y el 15k¿ el cual afirma el óptimo funcionamiento del sensor seleccionado, habiendo obtenido los objetivos marcados inicialmente., Fish farming is a method increasingly used to provide food to the growing demand of the population. But the breeding and feeding of these farmed fish supposes a very high cost. The feed material provided is not ingested and is precipitated to the bottom of the tanks. This happens because you do not know when the fish need to feed. The objective of this Final Master's Project is to try to monitor the movement of the fish in the fish tanks, performing different tests with physical sensors. Specifically, with LDR optical sensors. With this we want to relate the change of movement of the fish with the light intensity captured with the sensor. This at the same time, relate it to signs of hunger, which would reduce the costs of feeding in the fish farms. In this project 4 measurements have been taken, divided into 4 phases. Initially, two physical sensors of different characteristics are compared, where one of them is discarded because it does not offer a satisfactory result. Then, measurements will be taken with the selected sensor, taking measures of the two sides of the fish tank. Once, these measurements were taken, it was decided to repeat the process but choosing this time 3 measurements for each point in order to obtain more representative data. Finally, once it has been verified that the chosen sensor is the ideal one, it is decided to carry out a last test with a real fish, in order to recreate the real conditions as much as possible. For this, the fish is introduced into the tank every 2 seconds for 30 seconds. [EN] The use of precision agriculture and the Internet of Things has improved the efficiency of many cultures. Nevertheless, there are a few low-cost options to monitor soil moisture. Moreover, those options depend on the specific characteristics of the soil. In this paper, we attempt to find a sensor, based on mutual inductance, that could be used for more than one sort of soil. We study three prototypes, one of them with casing. The sensors are powered with a voltage of 10 peak to peak volts. One of the soils has a high content of organic matter and sand while the other is rich in sand and silt. The best prototype for the soil with high levels of organic matter has 10 turns on the powered coil and 5 on the induced coil. The best frequency for this sensor is 1340 kHz. For the soil with a significant quantity of silt, the best prototype has 80 turns on the powered coil and 40 on the induced coil. The frequency at which this sensor works best is 229 kHz, which happens to be its peak frequency. With those characteristics regressions lines with R2 values higher than 0.75 can be modeled

[EN] Precision agriculture is a current tendency whose goal is to increase the crop production while reducing the water and fertilization use. The use of low cost sensors and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are frequently used to implement complex systems to control the irrigation process in crops. Taking into account the importance of developing these low cost systems, in this paper we present a practical study that compares a commercial soil moisture sensor with the prototype of our inductive soil moisture sensor, which is based on two solenoid coils. Additionally, we measure its performance as a function of the soil temperature to quantify the effect of this parameter in the sensor measurements. The results show that the temperature greatly affects the sensors measurements and, although our sensor could be used to measure the soil moisture as a function of the temperature, the configuration of two solenoids is not the most suitable to perform this kind of measurements

[EN] The Internet of Underground Things (IoUT) is a novel concept regarding Internet of Things (IoT). It could have countless applications, particularly in agriculture as buried devices do not interfere with the machinery. Furthermore, wireless communication among buried and above ground devices would allow a significant cost reduction as wires would not need to be deployed and wires would not be destroyed by machinery or impede the correct performance of the activities performed by the workers of the field. In this paper, we perform a WiFi coverage study of ESP8266 nodes placed both underground and above ground so as to assess the current lack of knowledge in IoUT and the performance of low-cost controller boards for IoUT applications. Tests were performed with ESP8266 nodes buried at depths of 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm and 40 cm in a field located in an area of citrus fields. A node programmed as an AP (Access Point) was placed at several distances at a height of 50 cm. Results showed that the coverage was better for the node buried at a depth of 20 cm.

[EN] In recent years, the growth rate of world agricultural production and crop yields have decreased. Crop irrigation becomes essential in very dry areas and where rainfall is scarce, as in Egypt. Persimmon needs low humidity to obtain an optimal crop. This article proposes the monitoring of its performance, in order to regulate the amount of water needed for each tree at any time. In our work we present a technique that consists of obtaining images of some of the trees with fruit, which are subsequently treated, to obtain reliable harvest data. This technique allows us to have control and predictions of the harvest. Also, we present the results obtained in a first trial, through which we demonstrate the feasibility of using the system to meet the objectives set. We use 5 different trees in our experiment. Their fruit production is different (between 20 and 47kg of fruit). The correlation coefficient of the obtained regression model is 0.97.

[EN] Over 25 million people suffered from cerebral strokes in a span of 23 years. Many systems are being developed to monitor and improve the life of patients that suffer from different diseases. However, solutions for cerebral strokes are hard to find. Moreover, due to their widespread utilization, smartphones have presented themselves as the most appropriate devices for many e-health systems. In this paper, we propose a cerebral stroke detection solution that employs the cloud to store and analyze data in order to provide statistics to public institutions. Moreover, the prototype of the application is presented. The three most important symptoms of cerebral strokes were considered to develop the tasks that are conducted. Thus, the first task detects smiles, the second task employs voice recognition to determine if a sentence is repeated correctly and, the third task determines if the arms can be raised. Several tests were performed in order to verify the application. Results show its ability to determine whether users have the symptoms of cerebral stroke or not.

[EN] The south of Algeria has a very hard climate. In summer, it is very hot and dry with a very violent sand wind and in winter very cold and dry, from where several plants cannot be cultivated in an open field. With rapid population growth, the production of fruits and vegetables cannot be sufficient. To solve these two major problems, we propose in this paper a new mechanism for the control of the climate inside a greenhouse. The objective of this work is to propose a new design for the greenhouse that can be managed and controlled automatically. The management and the control of this greenhouse are done because of our new proposed algorithms, and the use of new technologies such as sensors, actuators, microcontrollers, and the Internet of things to facilitate the tasks of farmers in the south of Algeria, and to improve the productiveness of the agriculture. We present the results of applying our proposal in a greenhouse during a short period of time and the changes on the environmental parameters inside the greenhouse.

[EN] Sick children need a continuous monitoring, but this involves high costs for the government and for the parents. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) jointly with artificial intelligence and smart devices can reduce these costs, help the children and assist their parents. This paper presents a smart architecture for children's chronic illness monitoring that will let the caregivers (parents, teachers and doctors) to remotely monitor the health of the children based on the sensors embedded in the smartphones and smart wearable devices. The proposed architecture includes a smart algorithm developed to intelligently detect if a parameter has exceeded a threshold, thus it may imply an emergency or not. To check the correct operation of this system, we have developed a small wearable device that is able to measure the heart rate and the body temperature. We have designed a secure mechanism to stablish a Bluetooth connection with the smartphone. In addition, the system is able to perform the data fusion in both the information packetizing process, which contributes to improve the protocol performance, and in the measured values combination, where it is used a stochastic approach. As a result, our system can fusion data from different sensors in real-time and detect automatically strange situations for sending a warning to the caregivers. Finally, the consumed bandwidth and battery autonomy of the developed device have been measured.

[EN] Turbidity monitoring is necessary in many cases and several sensors have been developed for this purpose. However, in some cases to quantify the turbidity it is not enough and its characterization is necessary. In fish farms, the increase of sedimentary or phytoplanktonic turbidity requires different actions to prevent further damages. For this reason, a sensor able to differentiate between turbidity sources is necessary. In this paper, a turbidity sensor able to distinguish different types of turbidity is designed, developed and calibrated. The sensor is based on the Beer-Lambert law and it uses four LEDs as light sources with different wavelengths. The sensing elements are located at 180° of the light sources and consist of a photodiode and a photoresistor, sensitive to infrared and visible wavelengths respectively. For the calibration process different turbidity sources were employed, Isochrysis galbana, Tetraselmis chuii and sediment. The results show that it is possible to determine the turbidity using the infrared light and to characterize the origin of that turbidity with the red light. An algorithm was created in order to create a method to process the data from each sample to obtain the turbidity, the origin of this turbidity and the concentration of the turbidity source. With this algorithm, we can create a smart turbidity sensor for water quality monitoring. Our main application is focused on monitoring the water input in fish farm facilities; however, this smart sensor will be useful in many other areas.

Se están realizando muchos esfuerzos en la acuicultura para alcanzar la sostenibilidad, sin embargo aún está lejos de ser sostenible. Sus impactos sobre el medio ambiente pueden prevenirse y corregirse mediante el uso de sensores, desarrollando la conocida como acuicultura de precisión. La calidad del agua afecta el rendimiento de los peces. La temperatura y la salinidad son algunos factores que afectan al crecimiento de los peces. Sin embargo, otros factores como la turbidez, el fotoperíodo y el oxígeno disuelto entre otros pueden afectar a las necesidades nutritivas de los peces. Ajustar la cantidad de alimento necesario es crucial para garantizar la sostenibilidad de la acuicultura y para aumentar el beneficio económico de las instalaciones. Al monitorear la calidad del agua, es posible estimar las necesidades de alimentación. Sin embargo, no es suficiente. El monitoreo del comportamiento de los peces, especialmente durante el período de alimentación, puede ayudar a adaptar el alimento proporcionado. Entonces, si está tan claro que el monitoreo puede ayudar a la producción acuícola, ¿por qué no vemos este sistema de monitoreo en las instalaciones acuícolas? ¿Por qué en la mayoría de las instalaciones la alimentación se da manualmente sin considerar el comportamiento de alimentación de los peces? The temperature and salinity are some factors that affect to the fish growth. Nevertheless, other factors such as turbidity, photoperiod and dissolved oxygen among other can affect to the fish feeding needs. To adjust the amount of feed needed is crucial to ensure the sustainability of the aquaculture and to increase the economic profit of the facilities. Monitoring the water quality allows estimating the feed needs. However, it is not enough. To monitor the fish behavior, especially during the feeding period can help to adapt the provided feed. Then, if it is so clear that the monitoring can help to the aquaculture production, why we do not see this monitoring systems in the aquaculture facilities? Why in most of the facilities the feed is given manually without considering the fish feeding behavior? Nevertheless, the current price of the sensors for monitoring the fish farms is extremely high. The employed sensors are in most of the cases, the same that are used for oceanography. The proposed systems in the literature only cover some water quality parameters and usually do not consider fish feeding behavior. It is need low-cost sensors suitable for aquaculture monitoring. Those sensors must also be low-energy consumption, easy to use and with the option to include them in a network in order to send the data. Thus, we can use these sensors and sensors network to monitor the activity, to send alarms if it is necessary and to automatize processes. Moreover, including Internet, the data can be seen remotely. The use of those sensors can help to the aquaculture production. [EN] The monitoring of different parameters in the smart garden environment requires thousands of nodes and actuators. They form a multi-hop communication network. The scatternets formed with Bluetooth protocol is a communication solution. However, there is no current algorithm that considers the different capabilities of the devices (sensors or actuators) and assigns a role according to these capabilities. In this paper, we present a network topology formation algorithm for role assignment and connection establishment which considers the capabilities of the devices and use slave-slave Bridge to communicate the piconets. We design the algorithms needed for this protocol and test it. We have simulated the algorithms in order to evaluate the time needed for role assignment and to establish the first connections of the piconet. The results include different scenarios composed by one or two masters and one to seven slaves. In addition, we evaluate the established connections in piconets and bridges in a real case of the smart garden sensor network. Finally, we present the changes in the piconet connections after the deployment of two nodes in an existing network.

[EN] The effects of chronic exposure to high sound pressure levels (SPLs) are widely studied in the industry environment. However, the way that SPLs affect music students has not been thoroughly examined. In this paper, we study the SPL exposure of batucada students and we propose an assisted protection headphone as a part of e-health system. We measured the SPL reached during a regular percussion class. Pure-tone audiometries were performed to a set of percussion students. The gathered data were statistically analyzed. The assisted protection headphones and their operation are detailed and tested during a regular class. Our results show that 35% of the musicians present with a noise-induced hearing loss, considered as two frequencies with hearing loss of 25 dB or more or one frequency with a hearing loss of 30 dB or more. Our data also shows that those students that do not use any protection have a greater hearing loss. However, the students that use protection headphones are also suffering hearing loss. There might be a problem in the way that musicians are using the protection headphones. Our assisted protection headphones as a part of e-health measures can diminish the negative effects of percussion instruments for musicians.

[EN] Aquaculture is a growing industry, and its sustainability is crucial. One of its major environmental impacts is the uneaten feed that pollutes the water. To minimize the uneaten feed, many systems have been developed. Nevertheless, current systems can be improved by considering the fish position in the tank and the falling feed. In this paper, we propose a system based on fish presence sensors set at different tank heights and a feed detection sensor located in the drainage tubes. The fish presence sensor is based on light-dependent resistor (LDR). The calibration of these sensors is shown. When the output voltage is higher than 1.467 V, we can consider that fish are present. On the other side, the falling feed sensor is based on a CMOS sensor. The calibration process is performed with 40 pictures. The summation of pixels, with brightness value between 0 and 15 in the blue histogram, is used as an indicator of feed presence. If this value is higher than 520 pixels, we can consider that there is feed in the picture. Moreover, a verification process of both sensors is done. The results of the verification confirm the calibration. Finally, the operation of the system is shown.

[EN] Wireless sensor networks are widely used for monitoring different processes, including agriculture, in order to reach sustainability. One of the keys to sustainable crops is water saving. In particular, saving water is extremely important in arid and semiarid regions. In those regions, citrus trees are cultivated, and drip irrigation is used to save water. In this paper, we propose a smart irrigation system for citrus trees using a WSN. We describe the employed sensors and nodes for this proposal. Next, we present the proposed architecture and the operational algorithms for the nodes. Moreover, we designed different algorithms for fault tolerance and energy saving functionalities. The energy saving algorithm is based on the relevance of the gathered data, which is analyzed in order to consider whether the information should be forwarded or not. A TPC-based protocol is proposed to perform the communication among the nodes of our system. In addition, we present different simulations of the proposed system. Particularly, we show the consumed bandwidth and the remaining energy in the different nodes. Finally, we test different energy configurations to evaluate the network lifetime and the remaining energy when the first node depletes its energy.

[EN] Control over water usage for irrigation purposes is a key factor in order to achieve the sustainability in agriculture. The irrigation of urban lawns represents a high percentage of the urban water usage. The use of information and communication technology (ICT) offers the possibility of monitoring the grass state in order to adjust the irrigation regime. In this paper, we propose an Arduino-based system with a camera set on a drone. The drone flies along the garden taking pictures of the grass. Those pictures are processed with a rule-based algorithm that classifies them according to the grass quality. Pictures can be tagged in three categories: high coverage, low coverage, or very low coverage. After designing our algorithm, twelve pictures are used to verify its correct operation. The results show a 100% hit rate. To analyze the suitability of using drones to perform this task, we carried out a comparative study for gardens with different sizes, where the drone and a similar system mounted on a small autonomous vehicle have been used. The results show that, for gardens bigger than 1000 m(2), the use of drone is needed due to the time consumed by the vehicle to cover the entire surface. Finally, we show the results of sending the image information after processing it in different manners.

[EN] Every day it becomes more necessary to control crops because of the environmental problems, such as the lack of water for irrigation. Therefore, the use of precision agriculture becomes more evident. When it comes to making decisions on crops, the need of applying the concept of Smart Agriculture, which focuses on utilizing different sensors and actuators, is evident. As the number of IoT devices used in agriculture grows exponentially, it is necessary to design the implemented network so that the data is transmitted without problems. This paper shows a wireless network design, in which we use the information collected by the sensors of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), and a Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) formed by Access Points (AP) to transmit the data to a network that monitors the crops and its irrigation system. In addition, through simulations, we show the maximum number of nodes that should be connected to an AP in order to have an efficient network.

Sensors are widely used in terrestrial applications, but in underwater environments, their use is constrained by a variety of issues. The aim of this paper is to describe the state-of-the-art of the underwater sensors for water quality monitoring. First, the requirements and challenges of underwater sensors for aquaculture monitoring are discussed in detail. The main challenges are the need of a waterproof isolation or the need to avoid corrosion and biofouling, among others. Second, there are some advantages compared with the terrestrial applications, such as no need of minimized systems or the fact that such systems only require low accuracy. Subsequently, we evaluated the different options available to sense each variable, related to the needs of the aquaculture sensors. For temperature monitoring, thermistors, thermocouples or RTC seem to offer similar advantages. In contrast, for dissolved oxygen monitoring, the optical method seems to be the best option. For turbidity, optical methods are the most employed ones, while for conductivity measurements, the inductive coils are a promising option.

[EN] Determining and improving the wellbeing of people is one of the priorities of the OECD countries. Nowadays many sensors allow monitoring different parameters in regard to the wellbeing of people. These sensors can be deployed in smartphones, clothes or accessories like watches. Many studies have been performed on wearable devices that monitor certain aspects of the health of people, especially for specific diseases. In this paper, we propose a non-invasive low-cost and low-energy physical wellbeing monitoring system that provides a wellness score based on the obtained data. We present the architecture of the system and the disposition of the sensors on the sock. The algorithm of the system is presented as well. The wellness threshold evaluation module allows determining if the monitored parameter is within healthy ranges. The message forwarding module allows decreasing the energy consumption of the system by detecting the presence of alerts or changes in the data. Finally, a simulation was performed in order to determine the energy consumption of the system. Results show that our algorithm allows saving 44.9% of the initial energy in 10,000 min for healthy people.

[EN] The monitoring of farming processes can optimize the use of resources and improve its sustainability and profitability. In fish farms, the water quality, tank environment, and fish behavior must be monitored. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a promising option to perform this monitoring. Nevertheless, its high cost is slowing the expansion of its use. In this paper, we propose a set of sensors for monitoring the water quality and fish behavior in aquaculture tanks during the feeding process. The WSN is based on physical sensors, composed of simple electronic components. The system proposed can monitor water quality parameters, tank status, the feed falling and fish swimming depth and velocity. In addition, the system includes a smart algorithm to reduce the energy waste when sending the information from the node to the database. The system is composed of three nodes in each tank that send the information though the local area network to a database on the Internet and a smart algorithm that detects abnormal values and sends alarms when they happen. All the sensors are designed, calibrated, and deployed to ensure its suitability. The greatest efforts have been accomplished with the fish presence sensor. The total cost of the sensors and nodes for the proposed system is less than 90 (sic).

[EN] Wellness state is affected by the habitability state of the domestic environment. Monitoring it can help to discover the causes of a low wellness levels aiding people in the improvement of their quality of life. In this paper, we propose a system to monitor the wellness state of people utilizing Likert¿s scale to determine the state of the user through an emoticon-based human¿computer interaction. The system is intended for domestic environments and measures the habitability conditions of the dwelling (such as temperature, humidity, luminosity and noise) employing sensors. An algorithm is designed in order to establish how to measure those conditions and to calculate the statistics that allows tracking their progress. The obtained information is presented to the user to compare his/her wellness state with the habitability conditions. Measures in a real domestic environment were performed in order to determine the configuration of our system. The energy efficiency of the algorithm provides an improvement between 99.36 and 99.62% in the energy consumption depending on the selected parameters.

[EN] The design of monitoring systems for marine areas has increased in the last years. One of the many advantages of wireless sensor networks is the quick process in data acquisition. The information from sensors can be processed, stored, and transmitted using protocols efficiently designed to energy saving and establishing the fastest routes. The processing and storing of data can be very useful for taking intelligent decisions for improving the water quality. The monitoring of water exchange in aquaculture tanks is very important to monitor the fish welfare. Thus, this paper presents the design, deployment, and test of a smart data gathering system for monitoring several parameters in aquaculture tanks using a wireless sensor network. The system based on a server is able to request and collect data from several nodes and store them in a database. This information can be postprocessed to take efficient decisions. The paper also presents the design of a conductivity sensor and a level sensor. These sensors are installed in several aquaculture tanks. The system was implemented using Flyport modules. Finally, the data gathering system was tested in terms of consumed bandwidth and the delay Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) packets delivering data from the sensors.

[EN] Continuous monitoring of chronic patients improves their quality of life and reduces the economic costs of the sanitary system. However, in order to ensure a good monitoring, high bandwidth and low delay are needed. The 5G technology offers higher bandwidth, lower delays and packets loss than previous technologies. This paper presents an architecture for smart eHealth monitoring of chronic patients. The architecture elements include wearable devices, to collect measures from the body, and a smartphone at the patient side in order to process the data received from the wearable devices. We also need a DataBase with an intelligent system able to send an alarm when it detects that it is happening something anomalous. The intelligent system uses machine learning in BigData taken from different hospitals and the data received from the patient to diagnose and generate alarms. Experiment tests have been done to simulate the traffic from many users to the DataBase in order to evaluate the suitability of 5G in our architecture. When there are few users (less than 200 users), we do not find big differences of round trip time between 4G and 5G, but when there are more users, like 1000 users, it increases considerably reaching 4 times more in 4G The Packet Loss is almost null in 4G until 300 users, while in 5G it is possible to keep it null until 700 users. Our results point out that in order to have high number of patients continuously monitored, it is necessary to use the 5G network because it offers low delays and guarantees the availability of bandwidth for all users.

La turbidez es un parámetro importante cuando se trata de la calidad del agua, ya sea tanto para controlar el agua que procede de nuestros grifos de casa hasta en el desarrollo de especies de peces en piscifactorías. Dichos valores de turbidez se pueden obtener de diferentes formas, ya sea utilizando el "disco Sec chi", se utiliza para medir la transparencia del agua, el cual es un parámetro que va directamente ligado a la turbidez, o mediante el estudio de la emisión y recepción de luz, como hemos empleado en este proyecto con la utilización de sensores y dispositivos capaces de transmitir los datos de forma inalámbrica. La monitorización de los parámetros como la turbidez, transparencia, salinidad, conductividad y oxígeno disuelto, entre otros parámetros que se puede obtener del agua, son datos que nos dan una gran cantidad de información y de donde podemos sacar multitud de conclusiones y sus consiguientes beneficios, tanto para mejorar la calidad del agua que consumimos, como para mejorar la calidad del agua que se vierte a los ríos y mares y que se viertan aguas sin componentes que puedan afectar a los diferentes ecosistemas con los que entra en contacto estos vertidos., Turbidity is an important parameter when it comes to water quality, either to control the water that comes from our house taps or in the development of fish species in fish farms. Such turbidity values can be obtained in different ways, either by using "Sec chi disk", is used to measure the clarity of the water, which is a parameter that is directly linked to turbidity, or by studying the emission and receiving of light, as we have used in this project with the use of sensors and devices able of transmitting the data wirelessly. The monitoring of parameters such as turbidity, clarity, salinity, conductivity and dissolved oxygen, among other parameters that can be obtained from water, are data that gives us a great amount of information and from where we can get many conclusions and their ensuing benefits, so much to improve the quality of the water that we consume, as to improve the quality of the water that is poured to the rivers and seas and that are poured water without components that can affect the different ecosystems with which these waste come into contact.

[EN] Because of the growth of the number of devices that use the internet, the number of available IPv4 addresses has run out in most parts of the world. IPv6 was created to solve this problem but the migration progress is proceeding at a slower pace that it was expected. This is mostly due to the cost of changing the equipment to one that supports IPv6 and the cost of configuring these devices. Knowing the aspects of a router configuration that are affected by the performance of IPv6 is very important in order to improve the efficiency of IPv6 end facilitate the migration process. In this paper we perform several measures to detect which aspects of the configuration of a bottom and medium range router are affected by IPv6. Two different topologies were used and different combinations of IPv4 and IPv6 traffic are sent. In different test Access Control Lists or IPv6 Routing Extension Headers are used. CPU usage and maxim traffic rate are some evaluated parameters. The router performance is clearly affected by the IPv6 traffic is used, CPU usage increases and the maximum traffic rate decreases.

AMIs are becoming a vital part of utilities distribution network and allow the development of Smart Cities. In this article we propose an integrated Internet of Things architecture for smart meter networks to be deployed in smart cities. We discuss the communication protocol, the data format, the data gathering procedure, and the decision system based on big data treatment. The architecture includes electricity, water, and gas smart meters. Real measurements show the benefits of the proposed IoT architecture for both the customers and the utilities.

[EN] The mobile health (mHealth) and electronic health (eHealth) systems are useful to maintain a correct administration of health information and services. However, it is mandatory to ensure a secure data transmission and in case of a node failure, the system should not fall down. This fact is important because several vital systems could depend on this infrastructure. On the other hand, a cloud does not have infinite computational and storage resources in its infrastructure or would not provide all type of services. For this reason, it is important to establish an interrelation between clouds using communication protocols in order to provide scalability, efficiency, higher service availability and flexibility which allow the use of services, computing and storage resources of other clouds. In this paper, we propose the architecture and its secure protocol that allows exchanging information, data, services, computing and storage resources between all interconnected mHealth clouds. The system is based on a hierarchic architecture of two layers composed by nodes with different roles. The routing algorithm used to establish the connectivity between the nodes is the shortest path first (SPF), but it can be easily changed by any other one. Our architecture is highly scalable and allows adding new nodes and mHealth clouds easily, while it tries to maintain the load of the cloud balanced. Our protocol design includes node discovery, authentication and fault tolerance. We show the protocol operation and the secure system design. Finally we provide the performance results in a controlled test bench.
