Presently, the search for urgent solutions to mitigate climate change has become a global priority. One of the most important challenges is the characterization, standardization, and technology of sustainable natural raw materials, which will significantly improve the quality of common types of cement, the production process of which emits large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. This work is focused on the study of natural kaolinitic clays (NKC) from the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula and its main objective is to define and normalize their properties as natural pozzolanic materials. This research consists of an initial study to determine the morphological and chemical properties using SEM and XRF. Furthermore, the physical properties of the samples were studied, such as thermic treatment (TT), Blane particle finesse (BPF), real density (RD) and apparent density (AD), porosity (P), volume stability (VS) and start and final setting time (SFST). On the other hand, technological analyses were carried out as follows: chemical analysis (CATQ), pozzolanicity (CAP), mechanical compression strength tests at 7, 28, and 90 days (MCST) as well as the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). XRF results indicated that the SiO2 content (49.9–51.0%) of kaolinitic clay in its natural state (NKC) increases to 57.41 and 58.10%, respectively, when calcined (CKC). The chemical analysis of pozzolanicity established that the NKC does not show pozzolanic activity during the first 8 and 15 days; however, once calcinated, its pozzolanic reactivity increases substantially. On the other hand, the results of the mechanical stress tests (MCST) indicate an exponential increase in mechanical resistance from 7 to 90 days, which is higher in mortars made with CKC; similarly, and according to the results of the calculation of the Resistant Activity Index (RAI), it shows that the substitutions of Portland cement (PC) by NKC are effective between the ranges of 10 and 25%, while in the case of the substitution of PC by CKC, all formulations (10, 25 and 40%) are effective. This research establishes that the kaolinitic clays of the east of the Iberian Peninsula can be considered quality pozzolanic materials, capable of partially replacing Portland cement. The results presented here could be used as guidelines for the understanding and application of natural pozzolanic materials contributing to the improvement of types of cement, mortars, and concretes, which would positively affect the quality and preservation of the environment as well as the sustainability of eco-efficient construction materials.

La Oficina de Aprendizaje-Servicio (ApS) de la UPM, constituida en sesión del Consejo de Gobierno de diciembre de 2019 tiene, como misión fundamental, promover en el ámbito de las enseñanzas de esta universidad la metodología ApS. Con esta finalidad se vienen realizando convocatorias de proyectos de impacto social alineados con los ODS como un mecanismo más para la contribución a la Agenda 2030, y se colabora intensamente con las diversas oficinas constituidas con el mismo objetivo en otras universidades. Nuestra oficina pretende impulsar progresivamente la colaboración con entidades ajenas a la UPM, y atender demandas y necesidades sociales en las que nuestros estudiantes y profesores brinden sus conocimientos para la construcción de una mejor y más justa sociedad. Con este propósito, se han puesto en marcha numerosas iniciativas y colaboraciones con Ayuntamientos, Asociaciones, ONG, Fundaciones y centros de enseñanza, con el fin común de plantear mejoras y trabajar con entornos desfavorecidos, y colectivos vulnerables de nuestro entorno. Cabe destacar la muy positiva acogida que, progresivamente se está logrando, en lo relativo a la diseminación de estas iniciativas en el ámbito de la UPM, viéndose incrementada la participación e interés de nuestros docentes y estudiantes en los llamamientos que se realizan desde la oficina. Desde la constitución de la oficina, son ya más de 100 actividades desarrolladas con la participación de más de 500 profesores. Uno de los compromisos de la Oficina ApS de la UPM es dar visibilidad por su carácter meritorio a las experiencias realizadas por el profesorado y los estudiantes de nuestra universidad y, es por ello, que nos complace la presentación de esta primera edición del ebook, en el que se recogen algunas de las experiencias realizadas en nuestra universidad y que confiamos ampliar periódicamente con futuras ediciones. Nuestro más sincero agradecimiento a todos los profesores que habéis hecho posible esta primera publicación con vuestras contribuciones.

Esta investigación que presentamos pretende profundizar en las señales de alarma más frecuentes de los niños y las niñas diagnosticados con TEA, atendiendo a su nivel de desarrollo lingüístico. Para ello, analizamos los resultados obtenidos de una muestra de 142 niños y niñas evaluados en los cinco últimos años en el Servicio de Psicomotricidad de la Universidad de La Laguna. El instrumento utilizado es el ADOS-2 y para realizar el análisis estadístico hacemos uso del SPSS. Las conclusiones obtenidas hacen referencia a la ausencia de lenguaje durante los 3 primeros años de vida y a un aumento del porcentaje de sujetos con lenguaje adquirido a partir de esta edad; al escaso uso de la mirada, poco uso de la expresividad facial y gestualidad limitada en la interacción social; o la falta de respuesta cuando se les llama por su nombre solo en sujetos carentes de lenguaje, como algunas de las características más evidentes en las personas con TEA. En general, las variables en interacción social están más estrechamente relacionadas entre sí que en el resto de los ámbitos evaluados.

En los años previos a la eclosión de la pandemia de COVID 19 se asistió a un importante crecimiento de las llegadas de turistas, lo que provocó una serie de problemas que se englobaron en el término “overtourism”. La reducción de la presión turística se convirtió en un aspecto importante de la gestión de los centros históricos e implicó la adopción de distintas estrategias, entre ellas el demarketing. El objetivo de este trabajo es determinar la aportación de esta estrategia en el control del exceso de presión turística de los centros históricos de las ciudades españolas. Para ello, se han identificado y analizado las acciones de demarketing de Barcelona, Bilbao, Donostia-San Sebastián, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Sevilla y Valencia, a través del análisis de planes, folletos, webs de turismo y redes sociales. Si bien en todos estos destinos se han aplicado acciones puntuales de demarketing, especialmente aquellas relacionadas con objetivos de descentralización y diversificación, en general se aprecia un notable desaprovechamiento de sus posibilidades para la reducción de la presión turística de los centros históricos. De hecho, incluso en los momentos más intensos del overtourism, siguieron prevaleciendo modelos tradicionales de gestión turística orientados a la atracción indiferenciada de un mayor número de visitantes y a la promoción de atractivos turísticos patrimoniales aquejados de saturación. The years leading up to the outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic saw a significant growth in tourist arrivals, which led to several problems that came to be known as “overtourism”. The reduction of tourist pressure became an important aspect of the management of historic centers and involved the adoption of various strategies, including demarketing. The aim of this paper is to determine the contribution of this strategy to the control of overtourism in the historic centers of Spanish cities. To this end, demarketing actions in Barcelona, Bilbao, Donostia-San Sebastián, Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Seville and Valencia have been identified and analyzed through the study of plans, brochures, tourism websites and social networks. Although specific demarketing actions have been applied in all these destinations, especially those related to decentralization and diversification objectives, in general there is a notable lack of use of their potential to reduce the tourist pressure on historic centers. In fact, even in the most intense moments of overtourism, traditional models of tourism management oriented towards the undifferentiated attraction of a greater number of visitors and the promotion of heritage tourist attractions suffering from saturation continued to prevail. Certain biological particles are highly efficient ice nuclei (IN), but the actual contribution of bioparticles to the pool of atmospheric IN and their relation to precipitation are not well characterized. We investigated the composition of bioaerosols, ice nucleation activity, and the effect of rainfall by metagenomic sequencing and freezing experiments of aerosol samples collected during the INUIT 2016 campaign in a rural dryland on the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Taxonomic analysis showed community changes related to rainfall. For the rain-affected samples, we found higher read proportions of fungi, particularly of Agaricomycetes, which are a class of fungi that actively discharge their spores into the atmosphere in response to humidity changes. In contrast, the read proportions of bacteria were reduced, indicating an effective removal of bacteria by precipitation. Freezing experiments showed that the IN population in the investigated samples was influenced by both rainfall and dust events. For example, filtration and heat treatment of the samples collected during and immediately after rainfall yielded enhanced fractions of heat-sensitive IN in the size ranges larger than 5 µm and smaller than 0.1 µm, which were likely of biological origin (entire bioparticles and soluble macromolecular bio-IN). In contrast, samples collected in periods with dust events were dominated by heat-resistant IN active at lower temperatures, most likely mineral dust. The DNA analysis revealed low numbers of reads related to microorganisms that are known to be IN-active. This may reflect unknown sources of atmospheric bio-IN as well as the presence of cell-free IN macromolecules that do not contain DNA, in particular for sizes
