Hydatid disease is a zoonotic infestation caused by larval cestode of genus Echinococcus. Cystic form of this infection mostly involves liver and lung. Hydatid disease of the parotid gland is very rare even in endemic areas and is often clinically mistaken for parotid tumors or cysts. The presence of protoscolices, laminated membranes, and isolated hooklets are characteristic cytological features observed on fine-needle aspirate from hydatid cysts. We report unusual cytological features from a hydatid cyst of parotid in a 13-year-old girl. She presented with a slowly enlarging hard mass in left parotid. Fine-needle aspiration yielded slightly turbid fluid. Smears from the sediment revealed naked parasitic micronuclei, fragments of germinative layer (endocyst), and abortive brood capsules (buds from endocyst) seen as spherical structures with multiple parasitic nuclei. Some of these spherical structures were degenerated with recognizable nuclei and others were completely necrotic. Diagn. Background: Most suppurative parotid abscesses are unilateral and result from bacterial infection via Stensen's duct. Formation of bilateral parotid abscesses rarely occur, and cases arising in the setting of parasite infection have not been described to date., Methods and Results: A 41-year-old man presented with bilateral parotid abscesses and underwent incision and drainage of right-sided swelling because of poor response to the aspiration drainage and intravenous antibiotic therapy. A nematode larva, morphologically consistent with Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis), was found in the cytologic examination, and bilateral abscesses regressed significantly after administration of Ivermectin., Conclusion: We report the first case of S. stercoralis infection presenting as bilateral parotid abscesses. This case expands the spectrum of diseases associated with S. stercoralis and suggests that clinicians, especially in the endemic regions, should consider S. stercoralis infection in the differential diagnosis of refractory parotid abscess., (Copyright © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

It has been demonstrated that parotid glands of rats infected with Trypanosoma cruzi present severe histological alterations; changes include reduction in density and volume of the acini and duct systems and an increase in connective tissue. We evaluated the association between morphological changes in parotid glands, circulating testosterone levels and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGF-R) expression in experimental Chagas disease in rats. Animals at 18 days of infection (acute phase) showed a significant decrease in body weight, serum testosterone levels and EGF-R expression in the parotid gland compared with a control group. Since decreases in body weight could lead to a reduction in circulating testosterone concentration, we believe that the reduction in EGF-R expression in parotid glands of infected rats is due to alterations in testosterone levels and atrophy of parotid glands is caused by changes in EGF-R expression. Additionally, at 50 days (chronic phase) of infection parotid glands showed a normal histological aspect likely due to the normalization of the body weight. These findings suggest that the testosterone-EGF-R axis is involved in the histological changes.

Rhinosporidiosis is a benign chronic granulomatous infection caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi. Rhinosporidiosis is endemic in south Asia, notably in southern India and Sri Lanka. Majority of the cases have been reported to occur in upper respiratory sites, notably anterior nares, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, larynx and soft palate. Only two rare cases of involvement of parotid duct, have been reported in literature. Hence, this case will probably be the third to be reported.

A 40-year-old female suffering from hydatid disease located in the parotid gland is presented. Although Greece remains an endemic area for echinococcosis, this presentation of the disease is rare. Total excision of the cyst with partial parotidectomy was performed. The patient refused to receive general anesthesia and the operation was carried out under local anesthesia. Perioperative adjuvant medical therapy with albendazole was administered. In a two-year follow-up no recurrence has occurred.

Primary hydatid cyst of the parotid gland is still an exceptional localization. The parotid gland is an uncommon site, even in our country, in which echinococcal disease is endemic. We report six cases of primary hydatid cyst of the parotid gland who presented with an isolated mass. The diagnosis was based on ultrasonography, which showed a parotid gland cystic mass. The echinococcal immunologic test (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) was positive in two cases. The surgical treatment consisted of total resection of the cyst, without rupture of the cystic wall and preserving the gland, in four cases and resection of the prominent dome in two cases. The diagnosis was confirmed on macroscopic examination of the resected pieces. In all cases, the postoperative course was uneventful. There was no recurrence at the 17-month follow-up.

Hydatid disease of the parotid gland is a very rare entity that may be easily overlooked in daily practice. On the other hand, rupture of the cyst during surgery may give rise to serious complications. We present a case of hydatid cyst of the parotid and discuss the differential diagnosis of this rare condition.

To quantify the occurrence of the dipteran parasite Batrachomyia strigapes, the ground frog assemblage associated with a large ephemeral wetland in Western Sydney was sampled between January 1999 and April 2000. Parasite infection was restricted to Uperoleia laevigata (5.1%, n = 1,492). Parasites were found under the parotoid glands, most frequently on the left side. After correction for frog size, infection was shown to significantly reduce frog weight. Despite reduced individual fitness, because the level of infection was low in the population, it is unlikely to have a major effect on the anuran population under current environmental conditions.

The parotid lymph nodes of naive and previously infected Balb/c mice were studied after, respectively, infection and re-infection with cercariae of Schistosoma mansoni via the ears. Schistosomula were able to pass through the lymph node by following the lymph flow or by penetrating the veins of the medullary cords. The number of nodal mast cells was higher from day 2 to 6 of primary infection; and from day 5 to 11 of re-infection. The amount of degranulating mast cells was significantly higher at day 4 of infection and at day 1 of re-infection. Eosinophils characterized the nodal inflammatory processes observed after day 5 in both primarily-infected and re-infected mice. However, only in the latter the eosinophils were able to adhere to the larval surface. In primarily-infected mice, no intranodal larva presented signs of degeneration. In contrast, in re-infected animals, some degenerating larvae were found inside eosinophilic infiltrates. The eosinophils reached the nodal tissue by migrating through the high endothelial venules and their collecting veins.

Four crossbred Bos taurus oxen resistant to Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and three tick naive oxen of the same breed, which were all infested with adult R. appendiculatus infected with the Boleni strain of Theileria parva bovis, acquired Theileria infection. All four tick resistant oxen recovered after a mild febrile reaction. Two of the tick naive oxen died while the third recovered after a protracted period. It is suggested that tick resistance in cattle may be an important factor in establishing and maintaining enzootic stability in Theileria endemic areas.
