Abstract

Materials of which the optical response is determined by their structure are of much interest both for their fundamental properties and applications. Examples range from simple gratings to photonic crystals. Obtaining control over the optical properties is of crucial importance in this context, and it is often attempted by electro-optical effect or by using magnetic fields. In this paper, we introduce the use of light to switch and tune the optical response of a structured material, exploiting a physical deformation induced by light itself. In this new strategy, light drives an elastic reshaping, which leads to different spectral properties and hence to a change in the optical response. This is made possible by the use of liquid crystalline networks structured by Direct Laser Writing. As a proof of concept, a grating structure with sub-millisecond time-response is demonstrated for optical beam steering exploiting an optically induced reversible shape-change. Experimental observations are combined with finite-element modeling to understand the actuation process dynamics and to obtain information on how to tune the time and the power response of this technology. This optical beam steerer serves as an example for achieving full optical control of light in broad range of structured optical materials.

5. Photoswitches in Order : One-Pot Synthesis of Azobenzene Main-Chain and Segmented Copolymers

Abstract

Syntheses of multifunctional polymers aim to engineer a wide range of material properties by adjusting the composition and positioning of functional groups. While manifold syntheses of side-chain-functionalized polymers are known, synthetic protocols for main-chain-functionalized polymers are less common. This work describes a general one-pot strategy to prepare polymers containing multiple functional moieties in their main-chain, e.g., azobenzene units separated by variable oligomers. The polymerization proceeds in two steps, starting from a single azobenzene initiator and commercially available monomers (lactones and cyclic carbonates). Various main-chain-functionalized polymers were obtained with a predictable and adjustable ratio of monomer units (5-20) to photoswitchable azobenzene groups. The thermal properties of these polymers were analyzed and rationalized with regard to the parent polymers' properties and the peculiarities arising from their segmented microstructure. Furthermore, the azobenzenes' ability to undergo light-induced cis/trans-isomerization is confirmed. High isomerization yields of up to 90% were observed for the polymers in solution with a half-life of several days for the cis-isomers in solution. Abstract

Adhesives exist in many forms and are essential in the daily life, in industrial processes, and in healthcare, calling for continuous improvements in terms of application fields, strength, biocompatibility, recyclability, and reversibility. Regarding the last two points, embedding photoresponsive molecules into the adhesive allows the use of light to attach or detach reversibly different surfaces. Photoresponsive adhesives can be removed without the use of high temperature or solvents, which is ideal for delicate environments. To date, azobenzenes are the most explored chromophore to prepare smart adhesive formulations. Here, the synthesis of polymer containing arylazoisoxazoles (AIZs) — azobenzene analogs containing a heterocycle — and their application as adhesives is described. Mechanical tests demonstrate an enhancement of the adhesion strength from 0.39 to 2.79 MPa, passing from low molecular weight monomer to selected AIZs acrylate polymer. Irradiation with UV induces the formation of the cis isomer with a consequent drop of more than 70% in the adhesion strength. The different compounds result as possible candidates as adhesives on the basis of the increased load that can be held, together with the possibility to obtain joints that can be either stable or detachable under light irradiation. Abstract

Worldwide research in microrobotics has exploded in the past two decades, leading to the development of microrobots propelled in various manners. Despite significant advances in the field and successful demonstration of a wide range of applications, microrobots have yet to become the preferred choice outside a laboratory environment. After introducing available microrobotic propulsion and control mechanisms, microrobots that are manufactured and powered by light are focused herein. Referring to pioneering works and recent interesting examples, light is presented not only as a fabrication tool, by means of twophoton polymerization direct laser writing, but also as an actuator for microrobots in both hard and soft stimuli–responsive polymers. In this scenario, a number of challenges that yet prevent polymeric light-powered microrobots from reaching their full potential are identified, whereas potential solutions to overcome said challenges are suggested. As an outlook, a number of real-world applications that light-powered microrobots should be particularly suited for are mentioned, together with the advances needed for them to achieve such purposes. An interdisciplinary approach combining materials science, microfabrication, photonics, and data science should be conducive to the next generation of microrobots and will l ultimately foster the translation of microrobotic applications into the real world.
