U Parmar [2]; J Velmurugan [3] INTRODUCTION X-rays are extensively used in medicine for both diagnosis and therapy.[sup.[1]] To [...], Objective: To optimize the patient dose and image quality through quality assurance (QA) of diagnostic x-ray equipment and to ensure compliance with international and national standards in x-ray specification parameters, the use of contactless and quick non-invasive instruments has gained importance. Considering the importance of equipment qualification and the intervention level for equipment management, it is vital to account for uncertainties in the measurement of parameters in diagnostic radiology. However, the limits and measurement uncertainties associated with the parameter measurement are not well established and many technical and scientific literature provide different tolerance values, either as absolute or in terms of percentage. Methods and Materials: In this paper, the authors analyze non-invasive multi-parameter detector measurements with the aim to (i) improve the accuracy in measurement of x-ray parameters (kilovoltage, dose, and exposure time); (ii) estimate the uncertainty associated with such measurements; (iii) analyze the tolerance values prescribed by various professional and regulatory bodies and propose an improvised method of reporting the parameters. The approach adopted in this paper takes into account the uncertainties associated with traditional instruments and the subjectivity in the measurements. Results: Estimated uncertainty for kV measurements in the range between 1.45 kV at 40 kV measurements and 4.88 kV at 150 kV measurements. The MU associated with the dose measurement is estimated to be 6.2 at 110 kVp, 100 mA, and 500 msec. Maximum MU estimated at 10 msec exposure time is 4.5 and with MU of 5 deviation added to 9.5. Conclusions: The current practice of reporting the measured mean values deviation without considering the inherent measurement uncertainty may not be a correct quantification procedure in QA. This is evident from the case study that 3 addition to the measured kV, 6.2 addition in the measured dose, and 4.5 to the measured time accounts for measurement uncertainty. Abstract

Cosimulation platforms are necessary to study the interactions of complex systems integrated in future smart grids. The Virtual Grid Integration Laboratory (VirGIL) is a modular cosimulation platform designed to study interactions between demand-response (DR) strategies, building comfort, communication networks, and power system operation. This paper presents the coupling of power systems, buildings, communications, and control under a master algorithm. There are two objectives: first, to use a modular architecture for VirGIL, based on the functional mockup interface (FMI), where several different modules can be added, exchanged, and tested; and second, to use a commercial power system simulation platform, familiar to power system operators, such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory. This will help reduce the barriers to the industry for adopting such platforms, investigate and subsequently deploy DR strategies in their daily operation. VirGIL further introduces the integration of the quantized state system (QSS) methods for simulation in this cosimulation platform. Results on how these systems interact using a real network and consumption data are also presented.

Abstract

Epitaxial thin films of La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 manganite, deposited using Chemical Solution Deposition technique, were irradiated by 200 MeV Ag+15 ions with a maximum ion dose up to 1x10^12 ions/cm2. Temperature- and magnetic field-dependent resistivity measurements on all the films (before and after irradiation) reveal a sustained decrease in resistivity with increasing ion dose. A maximum dose of 1x10^12 ions/cm2 suppresses resistivity by factors of 3 and 10, at 330 K [insulator-metal (I-M) transition] and at 10 K, respectively. On the other hand, with increasing ion dose, the magnetoresistance (MR) enhances in the vicinity of I-M transition but decreases at low temperatures. These results, corroborated by surface morphology of films, suggest that the origin of such properties lies in the irradiation induced improved crystallinity and epitaxial orientation, enhanced connectivity between grains, and conglomeration of grains which result in better conductivity at grain boundaries., Comment: To appear in 'Applied Physics Letters'

Abstract

We have deposited c-axis oriented thin films of La1.5Dy0.5CaBa2Cu5Oz (La-2125) tetragonal superconductor on LaAlO3 (001) by Pulsed Laser Deposition. These films were irradiated with 200 MeV Ag+15 ions. Atomic Force Microscopy and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis indicate that the irradiation has created columnar defects along the entire thickness (2000 A) of these films. With ion irradiation up to 1*10^11 ions/cm2, the critical current density (Jc(H)) is found to enhance by almost five folds, which is attributed to the augmented flux pinning by the columnar defects. A further increase in irradiation to 1*10^12 ions/cm2 causes reduction in Jc(H) due to distorted morphology of the film. Our work shows that the enhancement in Jc (H) of the irradiated La-2125 film is comparable to that in irradiated RE-123. Also, as the La-2125 type films have greater chemical stability than RE-123 (RE = rare earth ion), La-2125 type superconductors are potential candidates for applications. Interesting to note that there are partial flux jumps observed to occur symmetrically in the magnetic hysteresis of irradiated La-2125 thin films with enhanced Jc(H)., Comment: 13 pages including 4 figures

Abstract

Background: The virus-distribution and bimodal seed transmission of BCMV in green gram was studied. The Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) infecting leguminous crops have been found to be the most devastating Potyvirus as they cause considerable yield loss. Emergence of symptom in the first trifoliate leaf stage of the plants under the natural condition confirms that the virus may be seed borne, which has been investigated in the present study. Methods: The distribution of the virus in various parts of the seeds of mung bean (Vigna radiata) plants naturally infected in the field was determined by ELISA, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. Result: Nucleotide sequencing of the PCR amplicons from the seed parts from groups of ten seeds revealed the presence of Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) in the seed coat, cotyledon and embryonic axes. The grow out test performed with the same batch of seeds, there was symptom development after 3 weeks of sowing and the presence of virus was detected in all the seedlings through ELISA test. RT-PCR amplification of viral cDNA from whole seed, seed coat, cotyledons and embryo generated an amplicon of ~1300 with BCMV coat protein gene specific primer. The genomic sequence (GenBank accession No. ON944468) showed highest nucleotide identity of 90-91% sequence similarities with NL-1 strain (KF114860.1) and 94% sequence similarities with MY15-014 strain (MW079241.1) of previously available BCMV- CP virus gene sequence.
