Abstract

Two-dimensional electron systems with fascinating properties exist in multilayers of standard semiconductors, on helium surfaces, and in oxides. Compared to the two-dimensional (2D) electron gases of semiconductors, the 2D electron systems in oxides are typically more strongly correlated and more sensitive to the microscopic structure of the hosting lattice. This sensitivity suggests that the oxide 2D systems are highly tunable by hydrostatic pressure. Here we explore the effects of hydrostatic pressure on the well-characterized 2D electron system formed at LaAlO$_{3}$ -SrTiO$_{3}$ interfaces[1] and measure a pronounced, unexpected response. Pressure of $\sim$2 GPa reversibly doubles the 2D carrier density $n_{s}$ at 4 K. Along with the increase of $n_{s}$, the conductivity and mobility are reduced under pressure. First-principles pressure simulations reveal the same behavior of the carrier density and suggest a possible mechanism of the mobility reduction, based on the dielectric properties of both materials and their variation under external pressure., Comment: 13 pages and 10 figures main text. 6 pages and 10 figures supplementary information. Abstract

The interaction of reserve size and surrounding local human density in the United States and their relative effect on extinction of large mammals in 13 national parks of the western United States is examined. A correlation between reserve size and local human density, coupled with an adverse effect on local human density, means that species area analyses might need to incorporate greater disparity in the area of available habitat, greater effective isolation of smaller reserves than the data indicate, as per conclusion.

Abstract

Results of computer-based versions of a test for clerical and perceptual speed have been compared to the paper-and-pencil version. Presence of feedback and type of text produced varied results, and while all forms of the test produced reliable measures of clerical speed, results between computer and handwritten forms were not equivalent.

Abstract

Understanding the behavioral ecology of a species is fundamental to effective conservation and management efforts. This study quantifies the behavioral ontogeny of North Atlantic right whale mother‐calf pairs from birth to weaning spanning three critical habitat areas off the eastern coast of the United States and Canada. Data from 55 focal follows of 34 mother‐calf pairs were collected from 2011 to 2015. Resting behaviors dominated the activity budgets for both mother and calf during the first 5 months, putting them at increased risk of vessel collisions. There was an increase in the proportion of active behaviors (travel, foraging, social activity) in both mother and calf as the calf matured. Importantly, the type of active behaviors, in particular surface skim feeding and surface active social behavior, meant that the risk of vessel collision to the pair did not decrease as the calf matured. Mother‐calf right whale pairs showed very low calling rates on the calving grounds, suggesting that passive acoustic monitoring may not be an effective mitigation tool during the early months. However, calling rates increase once the pair leave the calving areas with both calf age and activity levels increasing, at which point passive acoustic monitoring becomes valuable. Protective measures need to take these rapid developmental changes throughout calf growth into account to improve the efficacy of protection measures for the endangered North Atlantic right whale and other species where behavioral ecology changes rapidly during maturation.
