This methodological systematic review is part of a larger programme of work to provide guidance to help health researchers choose an appropriate sample size for their external randomised controlled pilot trials. Professor Sandra Eldridge and Professor Gillian Lancaster are joint last authors on this protocol.

This methodological systematic review is part of a larger programme of work to provide some further guidance to help health researchers choose an appropriate sample size for their external randomised controlled pilot trials. This systematic review will inform the first round of a modified Delphi study designed to provide clarity about the sample size of pilot trials. This methodological systematic review will identify and describe the sample size justifications for external randomised controlled pilot trials. This methodological systematic review will help health researchers by summarising the available sample size justifications. Currently the pilot trial sample size justifications are published in various journals. The guidance produced as a result of the modified Delphi study will help health researchers choose appropriate sample sizes for their external pilot trials

11. Male influence on estrous cycle phenomena in the rat

Abstract

Sixty-four colony-bred Sprague-Dawley female rats were used in examining the effect of the male presence on female estrous cycle interval. Females were randomly assigned 4 per cage to 16 cages. Vaginal smears were taken daily during a 28-day period. Detection of cornified cells was assumed to be associated with estrus. There was considerable variability in Individual estrous cycle length. The mean number of cycles exhibited was 3.84 during the 28-day premale period. The expected mean number of cycles would have been 4.7 to 5.4 if all females had exhibited regular estrous cycles of 5 to 6 days duration. The average length of estrous interval prior to exposure to males was 5.18 days. On day 28 a mature intact male was introduced within each pen. Prior to introduction, males were housed separately from females, mixing of colony odors was minimized by room ventilation. Males were removed from females 17 days following introduction. Following introduction of males, an average estrous interval length of 5.28 days was observed. This did not differ significantly from the 5.18-day average interval observed prior to exposure to males. Thus, no significant male influence upon estrous interval length was demonstrated. One-hundred percent of the females, including those showing abnormal estrous patterns prior to the introduction of the males, showed cornified cells within the first 5 days following introduction of the male and 76 percent of this number conceived within this first 5-day period. The difference between percent showing cornified cells and the percent conceiving suggests that observation of cornified cells may not be a reliable indicator of sexual receptivity in the rat.

Under growing pressure from rival Republicans to release his tax returns, Mitt Romney said on Tuesday that he paid a tax rate approaching 15 percent on his millions of dollars in annual income but said he would not make public his full return until April. His effective tax rate was ''probably closer to the 15 percent rate than anything,'' Mr. Romney said at a campaign stop in South Carolina, noting that most of his considerable income over the last decade has come from investments rather than from earned income like salary. Abstract

IntroductionCluster randomised trials (CRTs) are studies in which groups (clusters) of participants rather than the individuals themselves are randomised to trial arms. CRTs are becoming increasingly relevant for evaluating interventions delivered in school settings for improving the health of children. Schools are a convenient setting for health interventions targeted at children and the CRT design respects the clustered structure in schools (ie, pupils within classrooms/teachers within schools). Some of the methodological challenges of CRTs, such as ethical considerations for enrolment of children into trials and how best to handle the analysis of data from participants (pupils) that change clusters (schools), may be more salient for the school setting. A better understanding of the characteristics and methodological considerations of school-based CRTs of health interventions would inform the design of future similar studies. To our knowledge, this is the only systematic review to focus specifically on the characteristics and methodological practices of CRTs delivered in schools to evaluate interventions for improving health outcomes in pupils in the UK.Methods and analysisWe will search for CRTs published from inception to 30 June 2020 inclusively indexed in MEDLINE (Ovid). We will identify relevant articles through title and abstract screening, and subsequent full-text screening for eligibility against predefined inclusion criteria. Disagreements will be resolved through discussion. Two independent reviewers will extract data for each study using a prepiloted data extraction form. Findings will be summarised using descriptive statistics and graphs.Ethics and disseminationThis methodological systematic review does not require ethical approval as only secondary data extracted from papers will be analysed and the data are not linked to individual participants. After completion of the systematic review, the data will be analysed, and the findings disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and scientific meetings.PROSPERO registration numberCRD42020201792.
