The NGA-Subduction Project is a multi-year, multidisciplinary project with the goal of developing a ground motion database and ground motion models for global subduction zone earthquakes including those in Japan, Taiwan, Cascadia, Alaska, New Zealand, South America, and CentralAmerica. Our ground motion model development is currently at the stage of identifying regional trends in path terms. We use a combination of data inspection and regression techniques to distinguish path effects in the data, including differences between interface and inslab events, forearc/back-arc effects, regional effects, and azimuthal effects. Our approach to modeldevelopment is to first develop a path model capturing these effects, then to investigate source and site effects. The parameterization of functional form is guided in part by the scaling expected by a generic equivalent point-source stochastic model. We expect regionalization in path and will investigate further regionalization in site response and in overall model bias.

The 2023 National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM; Petersen et al., 2023) has two major components – a seismic source characterization (SSC) model and a ground motion characterization (GMC) model. The US Geological Survey (USGS) established separate panels to review and provide input on these two models. Both panels are advisory, meaning that they provide input on technical issues for consideration by the USGS NSHM team, but they do not have decision making authority. Here, we report on the activities and recommendations of the Ground Motion Characterization Panel, made up of the authors of this review. Final modeling decisions are presented in separate USGS documents, including Petersen et al., (2023) and Moschetti et al., (2023). Where modeling decisions depart from our recommendations, the rationale is explained in those publications.

We investigate bias in ground motions predicted for Central and Eastern North America (CENA) using ground motion models (GMMs) combined with site amplification models developed in the NGA-East project. Bias is anticipated because of de-coupled procedures used in the development of the GMMs and site amplification models. The NGA-East GMMs were mainly calibrated by adjusting CENA data to a reference site condition using a site amplification model appropriate for active tectonic regions. Hence, these GMMs are likely biased relative to the CENA reference site condition (3000 m/sec shear wave velocity). Moreover, the NGA-East site amplification model recommended for hazard applications contains a simulation-based term for amplification between the reference condition and time-averaged shear wave velocity VS30=760 m/sec, which is uncertain and has not been calibrated against data from sites with that reference condition. Using the NGA-East dataset, we apply mixed-effects residual analysis and identify that period-dependent bias in 5% damped response spectral acceleration is present across a wide frequency range, but is strongest (i.e., overestimating by a factor of 2) at short oscillator periods

We present a model for the site-to-site component of aleatory variability for use with NGA-East site factors presented in Stewart et al. (2019). This model provides a higher degree of variability at short periods than is present in similar models for the western US.

Despite the continuously expanding presence of Spanish-speaking communities in the United States, media representation of the Spanish language and that of its speakers has remained relatively scarce. At present, however, a growing interest in reaching and cashing in on this influential consumer group is forcing significant changes in the mass media communication landscape. Not only are an increasing number of movies and TV shows working with more diverse casts (ethnically, culturally, linguistically, etc.), but there also seems to be a heightened presence of Latinx characters in leading or supporting roles. This tendency, however, does not necessarily mean that mainstream media is becoming more inclusive and less anglocentric. In fact, a careful look at the storylines of individuals who are perceived to be Spanish speakers will reveal that they mostly portray stereotypical roles and behaviors. When their stories are told, they are all too often infused with unwarranted messages that portray Latinxs as lazy, unskilled, unintelligible in speech, hypersexual, or simply too 'foreign' to fit in. Whether overtly or covertly expressed, the negative impact of these persistent transgressions has the potential to shape real-world ideologies, attitudes, and prejudices. This paper adopts a critical raciolinguistic perspective, which underscores the co-naturalization of language and race, to highlight the role of media in reinforcing discrimination against the Spanish language and its speakers. In our analysis of six recently popularized TV shows (i.e., East Los High, Family Guy, Gentefied, Jane the Virgin, One Day at a Time, and That '70s Show), we examine the perpetuation of racialized stereotypes toward Latinx characters' linguistic practices with regard to (i) the environment in which they exist, (ii) their mannerisms, (iii) speech patterns, and (iv) interactions with other characters. We demonstrate how these shows' blending of seemingly harmless linguistic ideologies with stereotypical and sensationalized representations grounded in colonial hierarchies reproduces hegemonic interests, perpetuates social inequalities, and places racialized Spanish speakers at a disadvantage. In the initial assessment of a headache patient, several dangerous secondary etiologies must be considered. A thorough history and physical examination, along with a comprehensive differential diagnosis may alert a physician to the diagnosis of a secondary headache particularly when it is accompanied by certain clinical features. Evaluation and workup include a complete neurological examination, consideration of neuroimaging, and serum/spinal fluid analysis if indicated. Careful attention to the patients' history and physical examination will guide the diagnostic work-up and management. In this review, we summarize the diagnostic workup of various primary and secondary headache etiologies. Although most headaches are primary in nature, it is essential to screen for headache "red flags", as they can suggest life threatening secondary etiologies. When secondary causes are suspected, appropriate neuroimaging can further differentiate the underlying cause. The appropriate imaging is dependent on the most likely secondary etiology, which is deduced from history and physical examination. When no red flags are present, primary headaches are more likely. These can be differentiated by frequency, location, duration, triggers, and presence of aura. The different clinical presentations for secondary headaches, as well as the distinguishing features for primary headaches are outlined in this review. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we explore whether the Parker and Baltay (2022) site response models for the Los Angeles (LA) basin region can improve ground-motion forecasts in the U.S. Geological Survey ShakeAlert earthquake early warning system (hereafter ShakeAlert). We implement the peak ground acceleration and peak ground velocity site response models of Parker and Baltay (2022) in ShakeAlert via the earthquake information to ground-motion (hereafter eqinfo2GM) module, which predicts ground motions from the estimated earthquake parameters of magnitude, rupture length, and location. The nonergodic site response models for the greater LA area were developed using ground motions from 414 M 3-7.3 earthquakes in southern California. We test nonergodic ground-motion forecasts for five earthquakes in the LA area: the 1994 M 6.7 Northridge earthquake, the 2008 M 5.4 Chino Hills earthquake, the 2019 M 7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake, the 2020 M 4.5 South El Monte earthquake, and a synthetic M 7.8 earthquake on the southern San Andreas fault from the ShakeOut scenario, which was the basis of a statewide emergency response exercise. From the test results, we find that with the nonergodic site response applied, ShakeAlert not only alerts larger areas but can also result in longer warning times in LA region. In addition, the modified Mercalli intensity (MMI) ground-motion predictions generated by the ShakeAlert eqinfo2GM module are improved in accuracy when compared with the corresponding ShakeMap ground-truth MMI when the nonergodic site response model is applied. We present an ergodic site response model with regional adjustments for use with subduction zone ground-motion models. The model predicts site amplification of peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity, and 5% damped pseudo-spectral accelerations of the orientation-independent horizonal component for oscillator periods from 0.01 to 10 s. The model depends on the time-averaged shear-wave velocity in the upper 30 m (VS30), basin depth, and region and is independent of subduction earthquake type. It has three components: a linear site-amplification term in the form of VS30-scaling, a nonlinear term that depends on VS30 and shaking intensity parameterized by peak ground acceleration at the reference-rock velocity condition of 760 m/s, and a basin sediment-depth term for Japan and Cascadia conditioned on the depth to the 2.5 km/s shear-wave velocity isosurface (Z 2.5). A global VS30-scaling model is provided along with regional adjustments for Japan, Taiwan, South America, Alaska, and Cascadia. The nonlinear model is global, with a functional form that has often been used to fit nonlinear responses inferred from simulations, but here we calibrate it empirically. Relative to a prior model for shallow earthquakes in active tectonic regions, our subduction zone global VS30-scaling is comparable at short periods (<1.0 s) but weaker at long periods, while the nonlinear site response is generally less pronounced but extends to lower levels of shaking. Basin depth models are conditioned on the difference of the actual Z 2.5 and a VS30-conditioned mean Z 2.5. Sites with positive differential depths have increased long-period site responses and decreased short-period responses, with the opposite occurring for negative differential depths.
