1. Improved HLT Framework for Belle II Experiment

Abstract

The original Belle II HLT framework was formally upgraded replacing the old IPC based ring buffer with the ZeroMQ data transport to overcome the unexpected IPC locking problem. The new framework has been working stably in the beam run so far, but it lacks the capability to recover the processing fault without stopping the on-going data taking. In addition, the compatibility with the offline framework (basf2) was lost which was maintained in the original. In order to solve these, an improved core processing framework is developed based on original basf2, while keeping the existing ZeroMQ data transport between the servers unchanged. A new core framework zmq-basf2 is developed with a lock-free 1-to-N and N-to-1 data transport using the ZeroMQ IPC socket so that it keeps a 100% compatibility with the original ring-buffer based framework. When a processing fault occurs, the affected faulty event is salvaged from the input buffer and sent directly to the output using the ZeroMQ broadcast. The terminated process is automatically restarted without stopping data taking. This contribution describes the detail of the improved Belle II HLT framework with the result of the performance test in the real Belle II DAQ data flow.

2. Upgrade of Online Storage and Express-Reconstruction System for the Belle II experiment

Abstract

The backend of the Belle II data acquisition system consists of a high-level trigger system, online storage, and an express-reconstruction system for online data processing. The high-level trigger system was updated to use the ZeroMQ networking library from the old ring buffer and TCP/IP socket, and the new system is successfully operated. However, the online storage and express-reconstruction system use the old type of data transportation. For future maintainability, we expand the same ZeroMQ library-based system to the online storage and express-reconstruction system. At the same time, we introduce two more updates in the backend system. First, online side raw data output becomes compressed ROOT format which is the official format of the Belle II data. The update helps to reduce the bandwidth of the online to offline data transfer and offline-side computing resource usage for data format conversion and compression. Second, high-level trigger output-based event selection is included in the online storage. The event selection allows more statistics of data quality monitoring from the express-reconstruction system. In the presentation, we show the description and test result of the upgrade before applying it to the beam operation and data taking.

Abstract

On March 25th 2019, the Belle II detector recorded the first collisions delivered by the SuperKEKB accelerator. This marked the beginning of the physics run with vertex detector. The vertex detector was aligned initially with cosmic ray tracks without magnetic field simultaneously with the drift chamber. The alignment method is based on Millepede II and the General Broken Lines track model and includes also the muon system or primary vertex position alignment. To control weak modes, we employ sensitive validation tools and various track samples can be used as alignment input, from straight cosmic tracks to mass-constrained decays. With increasing luminosity and experience, the alignment is approaching the target performance, crucial for the first physics analyses in the era of Super-BFactories. We will present the software framework for the detector calibration and alignment, the results from the first physics run and the prospects in view of the experience with the first data.

Abstract

The Belle II experiment features a substantial upgrade of the Belle detector and will operate at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric e+e− collider at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan. The accelerator completed its first phase of commissioning in 2016, and the Belle II detector saw its first electron-positron collisions in April 2018. Belle II features a newly designed silicon vertex detector based on double-sided strip layers and DEPFET pixel layers. A subset of the vertex detector was operated in 2018 to determine background conditions (Phase 2 operation). The collaboration completed full detector installation in January 2019, and the experiment started full data taking. This paper will report on the final arrangement of the silicon vertex detector part of Belle II with a focus on online monitoring of detector conditions and data quality, on the design and use of diagnostic and reference plots, and on integration with the software framework of Belle II. Data quality monitoring plots will be discussed with a focus on simulation and acquired cosmic and collision data.

5. A comprehensive study of vector leptoquark with $U(1)_{B_3-L_2}$ on the $B$-meson and Muon g-2 anomalies

Abstract

Recently reported anomalies in various $B$ meson decays and also in the anomalous magnetic moment of muon $(g-2)_\mu$ motivate us to consider a particular extension of the standard model incorporating new interactions in lepton and quark sectors simultaneously. Our minimal choice would be leptoquark. In particular, we take vector leptoquark ($U_1$) and comprehensively study all related observables including ${(g-2)_{\mu}},\ R_{K^{(*)}},\ R_{D^{(*)}}$, $B \to (K) \ell \ell' $ where $\ell\ell'$ are various combinations of $\mu$ and $\tau$, and also lepton flavor violation in the $\tau$ decays. We find that a hybrid scenario with additional $U(1)_{B_3-L_2}$ gauge boson provides a common explanation of all these anomalies., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We investigate various search strategies for light vector boson $X$ in $\mathcal{O}(10)~{\rm MeV}$ mass range using $J/\Psi$ associated channels at BESIII and Belle II: (i) $J/\Psi \to \eta_c X$ with $10^{10} J/\Psi$s at BESIII, (ii) $J/\Psi (\eta_c +X) +\ell \bar{\ell}$ production at Belle~II, and (iii) $J/\Psi +X$ with the displaced vertex in $X\to e^+e^-$ decay are analyzed and the future sensitivities at Belle II with 50 ${\rm ab}^{-1}$ luminosity are comprehensively studied. By requiring the displaced vertex to be within the beam pipe, the third method results in nearly background-free analysis, and the vector boson-electron coupling and the vector boson mass can be probed in the unprecedented range, $10^{-4}\leq |\varepsilon_e| \leq 10^{-3}$ and $9~{\rm MeV}\leq m_X\leq 100 {\rm MeV}$ with 50 ${\rm ab}^{-1}$ at Belle II. This covers the favored signal region of $^8{\rm Be}^*$ anomaly recently reported by Atomki experiment with $m_X \simeq 17~{\rm MeV}$., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, and 6 tables

Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at KEK, Tsukuba, Japan has successfully started taking data with the full detector in March 2019. Belle II is a luminosity frontier experiment of the new generation to search for physics beyond the Standard Model of elementary particles, from precision measurements of a huge number of B and charm mesons and tau leptons. In order to read out the events at a high rate from the seven subdetectors of Belle II, we adopt a highly unified readout system, including a unified trigger timing distribution system (TTD), a unified high speed data link system (Belle2link), and a common backend system to receive Belle2link data. Each subdetector frontend readout system has a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) in which unified firmware components of the TTD receiver and Belle2link transmitter are embedded. The system is designed for data taking at a trigger rate up to 30 kHz with a dead-time fraction of about 1% in the frontend readout system. The trigger rate is still much lower than our design. However, the background level is already high due to the initial vacuum condition and other accelerator parameters, and it is the most limiting factor of the accelerator and detector operation. Hence the occupancy and radiation effects to the frontend electronics are rather severe, and they cause various kind of instabilities. We describe the conversion of simulated and recorded data by the Belle experiment to the Belle~II format with the software package \texttt{b2bii}. It is part of the Belle~II Analysis Software Framework. This allows the validation of the analysis software and the improvement of analyses based on the recorded Belle dataset using newly developed analysis tools.

9. Environmental Monitoring for Belle II

Abstract

The Belle II experiment has just started, searching for physics beyond the Standard Model in $B$, charm and $\tau$ decays using data with the integrated luminosity goal of $50 ~\mathrm{ab}^{-1}$. Before the physics run with full detector system being installed, Belle II Phase 2 run is on-going at the time of the conference, until July 2018. In this presentation, we describe the environmental monitoring system with an emphasis on the software tools to help the experts and the non-expert shifters who operate the experiment. The monitoring tools are prepared on the control room especially for the shift-takers. It consists of thre components: the monitoring GUI, the alarm system, and the archiver. The monitoring GUI shows the current state of the detector and the alarm system generate warning states from monitored variables with sound and email notification. Abstract

Physical review / D 107, L031103 (2023). doi:10.1103/PhysRevD.107.L031103, We report on a measurement of the $\Omega_c^0$ lifetime using $\Omega_c^0 \to \Omega^-\pi^+$ decays reconstructed in $e^+e^-\to c\bar{c}$ data collected by the Belle II experiment and corresponding to $207~{\rm fb^{-1}}$ of integrated luminosity. Abstract

Recently reported anomalies in various B-meson decays and also in the anomalous magnetic moment of muon (g − 2)$_{μ}$ motivate us to consider a particular extension of the standard model incorporating new interactions in the lepton and quark sectors simultaneously. Our minimal choice would be the leptoquark. In particular, we take the vector leptoquark (U$_{1}$) and comprehensively study all related observables including , B → (K)ℓℓ′, where ℓℓ′ are various combinations of μ and τ, and also lepton flavor violation in the τ decays. We find that a hybrid scenario with an additional gauge boson provides a common explanation for all these anomalies.

Abstract

We measure the ratio of branching fractions for the $\Upsilon (4S)$ decays to $B^+B^-$ and $B^0\bar{B}{}^0$ using $B^+ \rightarrow J/\psi(\ell\ell) K^+$ and $B^0 \rightarrow J/\psi(\ell\ell) K^0$ samples, where $J/\psi(\ell\ell)$ stands for $J/\psi \to \ell^+\ell^-$ ($\ell = e$ or $\mu$), with $711$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector. We find the decay rate ratio of $\Upsilon(4S) \rightarrow B^+B^-$ over $\Upsilon(4S) \rightarrow B^0\bar{B}{}^0$ to be $1.065\pm0.012\pm 0.019 \pm 0.047$, which is the most precise measurement to date. The first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively, and the third uncertainty is systematic due to the assumption of isospin symmetry in $B \to J/\psi(\ell\ell) K$.
