Students today are habitual users of digital technology. However, they do not examine the nature of their relationship with technology. Even though we are all enduring severe environmental crises including the COVID-19 pandemic, our students do not appear to see the interrelated connections between the environmental crisis and themselves. A case in point is that they have difficulty drawing a connection between environmental crises and their participation in industrial civilization. This is why it is necessary to consider technological literacy seriously for our environmental education. This study seeks to investigate an alternative way to set up the relation of technology for the current environmental education by comparing the views of Heidegger and Latour on technology. Even though the question of the two thinkers starts from the same critics of the instrumentality of technology, their strategies to overcome it are quite different. While Heidegger suggests a human-centered relationship between humans and technology, Latour criticizes the limitation of this approach and maintains that more symmetrical relations with technology are needed as a form of a network between human and nonhuman actors. In this paper, I argue for the urgency of cultivating a sense of connection for our students' technological literacy in this environmental crisis. For that purpose, I insist Latour's advice for teachers and researchers to be considered more seriously to encourage students to take symmetrical relationship with technology in these aggravating environmental crises.

The human relation to things in the world is at stake in the so-called post-humanist era where the distinction between human and non-human is blurred, as indicated in a term like 'the nano-self'. How should we understand the nature of our relation to things in this era? Or how can we describe an "educationally" meaningful relation we as human agents can make in relation to things, artificial and natural, in the face of this technologically hybrid and ever-dehumanizing tendency of society? Well-known for his actor-network theory, Bruno Latour, an influential materialist and philosopher of technology, says that 'objects' have agency as much as humans; so we need to be able to "translate" the language of things into the language of men or vice versa as a way of co-shaping the world we live in. What does this mean and how can we do so? In carefully examining his theory, the essay attempts to explore and reformulate his account of the mediating role of human agency to see if it can provide us with an educationally plausible post-humanist concept of human agency, which can lead us into an ecologically ethical and politically responsible approach to education in general, and science education in particular.

Background: Ketamine has been used to control refractory cancer pain as an adjuvant to opioids. We conducted a prospective phase II study to investigate the efficacy and safety of 5-day continuous intravenous infusion (CIVI) of Ketamine in terminally ill cancer patients with refractory cancer pain. Methods: Hospitalized terminally ill cancer patients with refractory cancer pain were enrolled. Refractory cancer pain was indicated by requirements for 4 or more rescue opioids or pain intensity using numerical rating scale > personalized pain goal (PPG) despite of intravenous morphine equivalent daily dose (IV MEDD) ≥ 120 mg/day. The CIVI of ketamine was increased from.05 mg/kg/hour to.5 mg/kg/hour by.05 every 8 hours if pain intensity exceeded PPG or if number of rescue opioids ≥2 during prior 8 hours was required. The primary end-point was overall pain response rate, which indicates complete response (both rescue opioid ≤3/day and pain intensity ≤ PPG) plus partial response (rescue opioid ≤3/day), without unacceptable toxicities. Results: Among 21 eligible patients enrolled between September 2019 and January 2023, 20 were analyzed. Most pain mechanisms were mixed type (n = 15, 75%), with neuropathic component (n = 17, 85%). The baseline background opioids were IV MEDD 186 mg/24hour (range, 124-592), number of rescue opioids was 6 (IQR, 5-9), and median PPG was 4 (IQR, 3-4). The overall pain response rate was 50% (n = 10) including 40% (n = 8) for complete pain response and 10% (n = 2) for partial pain response. Conclusion: This study showed efficacy of gradually increasing CIVI of ketamine for terminally ill cancer patients with refractory cancer pain. Background: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a highly aggressive malignancy accounting for the majority of kidney cancers. Despite recent advancements in therapeutic options, the prognosis for advanced-stage RCC remains poor. Niemann–Pick C1-Like 1 (NPC1L1) plays a crucial role in cholesterol absorption and has been implicated in cancer progression across various cancers. However, its expression patterns and prognostic significance in RCC remain unclear. Methods: In this study, NPC1L1 expression in normal and RCC tissues, including subtypes, was compared using TCGA, GEPIA2, and The Human Protein Atlas. Clinical correlations were assessed, and the impact of NPC1L1 on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) was evaluated. Gene effect scores were analyzed using the DepMap tool to determine the involvement of NPC1L1 in RCC progression. Results: NPC1L1 expression was significantly lower in RCC tissues compared to normal tissues, particularly in the clear cell RCC (ccRCC), papillary RCC (pRCC), and chromophobe RCC (chRCC) subtypes, but increased in advanced tumor stages. Higher NPC1L1 expression was associated with worse OS and PFS in RCC patients. Multivariable Cox regression confirmed NPC1L1 as an independent prognostic marker. Additionally, gene effect scores showed that NPC1L1 is essential for the survival of specific RCC cell lines. Conclusions: This study determines NPC1L1 as an independent prognostic indicator in RCC, with higher expression associated with poor survival outcomes. These findings suggest that NPC1L1 could serve as a valuable marker for identifying high-risk RCC patients. Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between insulin resistance, as measured by the triglyceride–glucose index (TyG index), and hearing impairment in middle-aged women in Korea. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional survey utilized data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) IV (2007–2009), specifically from the period after July 21, 2009, when hearing test results became available, and from the KNHANES V (2010–2012). This study was conducted on 5416 women aged 40 to 69 who had completed both the health examination survey and audiometric tests, excluding those with missing data on menopausal status and the use of hormone replacement therapy. Results: In the study group, the prevalence of high-frequency hearing loss according to the TyG index was significantly higher in the mild hearing loss group (OR = 1.29; 95% CI: 1.12, 1.49, p < 0.001) and the moderate hearing loss group (OR = 1.27; 95% CI: 1.09, 1.48, p = 0.002). Conversely, the prevalence of low-frequency hearing loss did not show a significant difference in either the mild hearing loss group (OR = 1.17; 95% CI: 0.99, 1.37, p = 0.065) and the moderate hearing loss group (OR = 1.13; 95% CI: 0.94, 1.35, p = 0.199) Conclusions: Since diabetes can induce hearing impairment in women, it is recommended that women with a high TyG index undergo early hearing tests [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
