As millions of tons of kraft lignin are being wasted, a potential application is to use its crosslinking reactions to build thermosetting bio adhesives. However, the crosslinking reactions between lignin molecules are not fully understood. The present study aims to elucidate the crosslinking reactions of the model lignin compound guaiacylglycerol-β-guaiacyl ether (GGE) via one-step hydroxymethylation/ amination with formaldehyde and diethylenetriamine (DETAM), or one-step glyoxylation/ amination with glyoxal and DETAM via liquid NMR techniques such as 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, 2D 1 H- 13 C, and 1 H- 15 N HSQC NMR. Specifically, the 2D 1 H- 13 C HSQC NMR spectra confirm the presence of -CH 2 -NH- with a chemical shift of 1 H 2.6-3.6/ 13 C 40-60 ppm, and the formation of methylene linkages via the crosslinking reaction. Pose estimation is crucial for ensuring passenger safety and better user experiences in semi- and fully autonomous vehicles. Traditional methods relying on pose estimation from regular color images face significant challenges due to a lack of three-dimensional (3D) information and the sensitivity to occlusion and lighting conditions. Depth images, which are invariant to lighting issues and provide 3D information about the scene, offer a promising alternative. However, there is a lack of strong work in 3D pose estimation from such images due to the time-consuming process of annotating depth images with 3D postures. In this paper, we present a novel approach to 3D human posture estimation using depth and infrared (IR) images. Our method leverages a three-stage fine-tuning process involving simulation data, approximated data, and a limited set of manually annotated samples. This approach allows us to effectively train a model capable of accurate 3D pose estimation with a median error of under 10 cm across all joints, using fewer than 100 manually annotated samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work focusing on vehicle occupant posture detection utilizing only depth and IR data. Our results demonstrate the feasibility and efficacy of this approach, paving the way for enhanced passenger safety in autonomous vehicle systems.

As steric hindrance, methoxy groups are limiting the valorization of hardwood lignin. This paper reports a novel method of self-cross-linking of the syringaldehyde with activated methoxy groups (-OCH 3 ) via cross-coupling reaction to obtain thermosetting polymers for lignin-based wood adhesives. The methoxy groups of syringaldehyde have been activated via cross-coupling reaction by substituting Ar-OCH 3 with Ar-CH 2 -SiMe 3 , and dichloromethane, leading to cross-linking via methylene bridges to build a thermosetting polymer. FTIR spectra showed a decrease in the intensity of a -CH 3 and -OH group, owing to the substitution of the methoxy group. 13 C NMR spectra also supported these results with the -SiMe 3 signal that disappeared after the cross-linking reaction. Furthermore, cross-linking between the activated methoxy groups was confirmed with a strong exothermic peak at 130 °C, resulting in an increase in the adhesion strength as hot-pressing temperature increased from 160 to 180 °C. These results suggest that the cross-linking between the activated methoxy groups of syringaldehyde is an important understanding of valorizing hardwood lignin via building thermosetting polymers for lignin-based adhesives., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors. Hardwood kraft lignin from the pulping industry is burned or discarded. Its valorization was conducted by subjecting fractionation, amination with ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, and monoethanolamine, and crosslinking with formaldehyde or glyoxal to obtain bio-based wood adhesives. Acetone-soluble and insoluble hardwood kraft lignin were prepared and subjected to amination and then crosslinking. Fourier transform infrared, 13 C NMR, 15 N NMR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed successful amination with amide, imine, and ether bonds and crosslinking of all samples. Hardwood kraft lignin aminated with diethylenetriamine/ethylenediamine and crosslinked using glyoxal exhibited excellent results in comparison with samples crosslinked using formaldehyde. Acetone-insoluble hardwood kraft lignin aminated and crosslinked using diethylenetriamine and formaldehyde, respectively, exhibited excellent adhesion strength with plywood, satisfying the requirements of the Korean standards. Wafer-scale blue micro-light-emitting diode (micro-LED) arrays were fabricated with a pixel size of 12 μm, a pixel pitch of 15 μm, and a pixel density of 1692 pixels per inch, achieved by optimizing the properties of e-beam-deposited and sputter-deposited indium tin oxide (ITO). Although the sputter-deposited ITO (S-ITO) films exhibited a densely packed morphology and lower resistivity compared to the e-beam-deposited ITO (E-ITO) films, the forward voltage (V F ) values of a micro-LED with the S-ITO films were higher than those with the E-ITO films. The V F values for a single pixel and for four pixels with E-ITO films were 2.82 V and 2.83 V, respectively, while the corresponding values for S-ITO films were 3.50 V and 3.52 V. This was attributed to ion bombardment damage and nitrogen vacancies in the p-GaN layer. Surprisingly, the V F variations of a single pixel and of four pixels with the optimized E-ITO spreading layer from five different regions were only 0.09 V and 0.10 V, respectively. This extremely uniform V F variation is suitable for creating micro-LED displays to be used in AR and VR applications, circumventing the bottleneck in the development of long-lifespan and high-brightness organic LED devices for industrial mass production.

How to efficiently produce high performance plywood is of particular interest, while its sensitivity to moisture is overcome. This paper presents a simple and scalable strategy for the preparation of high-performance plywood based on the chemical bonding theory; a wood interfacial functionalized platform (WIFP) based on (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) was established. Interestingly, the APTES-enhanced dialdehyde cellulose-based adhesive (DAC-APTES) was able to effectively establish chemically active adhesive interfaces; the dry/wet shear strength of WIFP/DAC-APTES adhesive was 3.15/1.31 MPa, which was much higher than 0.7 MPa (GB/T 9846-2015). The prepared plywood showed excellent wood-polymer interface adhesion, which exceeded the force that the wood itself could withstand. In addition, the DAC-APTES adhesive exhibits moisture evaporation-induced curing behavior at room temperature and can easily support the weight of an adult weighing 65.7 Kg. Measuring human body dimensions is critical for many engineering and product design domains. Nonetheless, acquiring body dimension data for populations using typical anthropometric methods poses challenges due to the time-consuming nature of manual methods. The measurement process for three-dimensional (3D) whole-body scanning can be much faster, but 3D scanning typically requires subjects to change into tight-fitting clothing, which increases time and cost and introduces privacy concerns. To address these and other issues in current anthropometry techniques, a measurement system was developed based on portable, low-cost depth cameras. Point-cloud data from the sensors are fit using a model-based method, Inscribed Fitting, which finds the most likely body shape in the statistical body shape space and providing accurate estimates of body characteristics. To evaluate the system, 144 young adults were measured manually and with two levels of military ensembles using the system. The results showed that the prediction accuracy for the clothed scans remained at a similar level to the accuracy for the minimally clad scans. This approach will enable rapid measurement of clothed populations with reduced time compared to manual and typical scan-based methods.

Silk sericin has garnered the attention of researchers as a promising biomaterial because of its good biocompatibility and high water retention. However, despite its useful properties, the poor storage stability of sericin has restricted its extensive use in biorelated applications. This study extracted sericin from silkworm cocoon, dried and stored it as a solid, and then dissolved it in hot water conditions to improve the storage stability of sericin for its use. The dissolution behavior of the extracted sericin solids was examined in conjunction with the structural characteristics and properties of dissolved sericin. Consequently, the results of solution viscosity, gel strength, crystallinity index, and thermal decomposition temperature indicated that the molecular weight (MW) of the dissolved sericin remained constant until a dissolution time of 5 min, following which deterioration was observed. The optimum condition of dissolution of the extracted sericin solid was 5 min at 90 °C. Conclusively, the extracted sericin could be stored in a dry state and dissolved to prepare redissolved sericin aqueous solution with the same MW as extracted sericin, thereby improving the storage stability of the sericin aqueous solution.

We report the direct observation of muon neutrino interactions with the SND@LHC detector at the Large Hadron Collider. A dataset of proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=13.6  TeV collected by SND@LHC in 2022 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.8  fb^{-1}. The search is based on information from the active electronic components of the SND@LHC detector, which covers the pseudorapidity region of 7.2<η<8.4, inaccessible to the other experiments at the collider. Muon neutrino candidates are identified through their charged-current interaction topology, with a track propagating through the entire length of the muon detector. After selection cuts, 8 ν&#95;{μ} interaction candidate events remain with an estimated background of 0.086 events, yielding a significance of about 7 standard deviations for the observed ν&#95;{μ} signal.

In this study, five different nonwoven silk fabrics were fabricated with silk fibers from different cocoon layers, and the effect of the cocoon layer on the structural characteristics and properties of the nonwoven silk fabric was examined. The diameter of the silk fiber and thickness of the nonwoven silk fabric decreased from the outer to the inner cocoon layer. More amino acids with higher hydrophilicity (serine, aspartic acid, and glutamic acid) and lower hydrophilicity (glycine and alanine) were observed in the outer layers. From the outer to the inner layer, the overall crystallinity and contact angle of the nonwoven silk fabric increased, whereas its yellowness index, moisture retention, and mechanical properties decreased. Regardless of the cocoon layer at which the fiber was sourced, the thermal stability of fibroin and sericin and good cell viability remained unchanged. The results of this study indicate that the properties of nonwoven silk fabric can be controlled by choosing silk fibers from the appropriate cocoon layers. Moreover, the findings in this study will increase the applicability of nonwoven silk fabric in the biomedical and cosmetic fields, which require specific properties for industrialization.

Recent advancements in vehicle automation and driver-assistance systems that detect pavement markings has increased the importance of the detectability of pavement markings through various sensor modalities across weather and road conditions. Among the sensing techniques, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors have become popular for vehicle-automation applications. This study used low-cost mobile multi-beam LiDAR to assess the performance of several types of pavement marking materials installed on a limited-access highway in various conditions, and quantified the degradation in detection performance over three years. Four marking materials, HPS-8, polyurea, cold plastic, and sprayable thermoplastic, were analyzed in the current study. LiDAR reflectivity data extracted from a total of 210 passes through the test sections were analyzed. A new detectability score based on LiDAR intensity data was proposed to quantify the marking detectability. The results showed that the pavement marking detectability varied across the material types over the years. The results provide guidance for selecting materials and developing maintenance schedules when marking detectability by LiDAR is a concern.

Lignosulfonate features sulfonate groups, which makes it soluble in water and hence, suitable for a wide range of applications. However, its characterization is challenging because of its limited solubility in organic solvents. Thus, this study investigated the chemical and thermal characteristics of ion-exchanged sodium lignosulfonate (Na-LS) and compared it with those of industrial kraft lignin derived from softwood and hardwood. The results demonstrated that the ion exchange successfully converted Na-LS to lignosulfonic acid (H-LS), as proven by the Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and elemental analysis. H-LS has a greater apparent molecular weight than those of Na-LS and softwood and hardwood kraft lignin (SKL and HKL). According to 31 P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, H-LS has less phenolic OH than SKL and HKL, indicating that it has more polymeric chains. Furthermore, H-LS has substantially more native side chains, such as β- O -4 units, than SKL and HKL. Thermal analysis revealed that H-LS has a greater glass temperature (T g ) than SKL and HKL, although Na-LS has a lower T g than SKL and HKL. In addition, H-LS degraded faster than Na-LS did because the acid condition accelerated degradation reaction.

One of the key strategies for valorizing kraft lignin (KL) into value-added products such as bio-based adhesives is to perform solvent fractionation of KL to produce lignin with improved homogeneity. Understanding the structure and properties of fractionated KL will aid in the selection of the best samples for certain applications. In this study, acetone-fractionated KL from softwood and hardwood was characterized to understand its chemical structure, elemental composition, molecular weight, and thermal properties. The results revealed that acetone-insoluble KL (AIKL) fractions from softwood and hardwood have greater molecular weight, polydispersity, glass temperature, carbohydrate content, aliphatic hydroxyl groups, and a variety of native wood lignin side chains. In contrast, acetone-soluble KL (ASKL) fractions have a significantly lower molecular weight and polydispersity, a lower glass-transition temperature, a more condensed structure, more aromatic hydroxyl groups, and fewer native wood lignin side chains. In addition, the ASKL samples demonstrated stronger adhesive force and work of adhesion toward phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins than the AIKL samples, regardless of the lignin source. Colorado issued a month long statewide lockdown on March 26, 2020, during the initial surge of the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of this mandate on non-COVID-19 ICU admission rates and outcomes is unclear., Design: We performed a retrospective analysis of all medical ICU admissions in the University of Colorado Health System in four predefined periods: 1) prepandemic (2 mo prior to lockdown period 1); 2) mandated lockdown from March 26 to April 26, 2020 (period 2); 3) between surges (period 3); and 4) nonmandated lockdown surge (between November 1, 2020, and March 31, 2021, period 4)., Setting: Nonsurgical ICU admissions at the University of Colorado Health Systems, including 10 hospitals throughout Colorado., Subjects: All ICU admissions in four predefined time periods., Measurements and Main Results: We included 13,787 patients who were admitted during the four study periods. The 28-day mortality rates for non-COVID-19 ICU admissions following index ICU admission were 13.6%, 18.0%, 13.5%, and 16.0% across periods 1-4, respectively. However, the increased odds in non-COVID-19 ICU mortality during the mandated lockdown period relative to prepandemic 1 (odds ratio [OR], 1.39; 95% CI, 1.11-1.72; p = 0.0.04) was attenuated and nonsignificant after adjustment for demographics, comorbidities, diagnosis flags, and severity (OR, 1.15; 95% CI, 0.89-1.48; p = 0.27). Similar results were found in time-to-event analyses. The most common diagnosis in each time period was acute respiratory failure (ARF), and we found it to have increased during lockdown ( p < 0.001), whereas sepsis admissions increased during and decreased after lockdown ( p = 0.004). Admissions for alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) increased during lockdown and 6 months afterwards ( p = 0.005)., Conclusions: For non-COVID-19-related ICU admissions, mortality rate was similar before, during, and after Colorado's month long lockdown after confounder adjustment, including typical ICU admission flags. Primary admission diagnoses shifted throughout the predefined study periods with more admissions for severe critical diagnoses (i.e., ARF, sepsis, AWS) occurring during the mandated lockdown and nonmandated lockdown periods compared with the prepandemic and between surge period. In this study, colorimetric indicator films (CIFs) were developed by integrating neutral red covalently immobilized onto TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (NR@TOCNFs) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) inside a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix. The successful covalent immobilization of NR onto the TOCNFs was confirmed using attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analyses. The CIFs had a visible color change from red to yellow as the pH changed from 2.0 to 10.0. The colorimetric response of CIFs improved as the NR@TOCNF content increased, while it decreased as the PAA level increased. The critical pH ranges for the color change of CIFs were 6-7, 7-8, and 8-9 for 3 %, 5 %, and 7 % PAA, respectively, at 0.3 % NR@TOCNF. The best ammonia sensitivity was found in the indicator films containing 3 % PAA and 0.3 % NR@TOCNF. Statistical body shape models (SBSM) provide compact, flexible representations of body shape that can be implemented in design software. However, few SBSMs have been created to represent adults in supported seated postures that are relevant for the design of seated environments, and none has incorporated the effects of age. This paper presents an SBSM based on surface laser-scan data from 155 U.S. adults. The data were processed to obtain homologous mesh structure and symmetric geometry, and the processed data were statistically analysed using principal component analysis to obtain a compact representation of the data variance. Regression analysis was conducted to predict body size and shape from stature, body mass index, ratio of sitting height to stature, sex, and age. The resulting model allows rapid generation of realistic body models for applications, including product design, accommodation assessment, and safety system optimisation. The model is publicly accessible at HumanShape.org. Practitioner summary: This paper presents a statistical model that represents adult body shapes in a supported seated posture based on 3 D anthropometric measurements. This model is the first whole-body parametric model known to incorporate age effects based on data extending beyond 65 years of age.

This study developed pH-indicator films by combining esterified cellulose nanocrystals (e-CNCs) with activated bromocresol purple (a-BCP) via covalent bonding for pH-sensitive color-changing applications. The e-CNC/a-BCP particles were incorporated into cellulose acetate polymer to prepare pH-sensitive color changing films. Binding of a-BCP to e-CNCs was proven by attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Colorimetric analysis showed that films containing 10% or 15% e-CNC/a-BCP particles had critical color changes either at pH 4-5, or pH 7-8. The films with 10% e-CNC/a-BCP particles also revealed excellent leaching resistance under acidic conditions. Color changes were reversible between pH 2 and 10. These pH-indicator films had visible color changes in response to pH variations, color reversibility, leaching resistance, and sufficient rigidity even though mechanical properties decreased as the e-CNC/a-BCP content increased from 0% to 15%., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Acute kidney injury (AKI) complicates approximately a third of all acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) cases, and the combination of the two drastically worsens prognosis. Recent advances in ARDS supportive care have led to improved outcomes; however, much less is known on how to prevent and support patients with AKI and ARDS together. Understanding the dynamic relationship between the kidneys and lungs is crucial for the practicing intensivist to prevent injury. This article summarizes key concepts for the critical care physician managing a patient with ARDS complicated by AKI. Natural rubber is of significant economic importance owing to its excellent resilience, elasticity, abrasion and impact resistance. Despite that, natural rubber has been identified with some drawbacks such as low modulus and strength and therefore opens up the opportunity for adding a reinforcing agent. Apart from the conventional fillers such as silica, carbon black and lignocellulosic fibers, nanocellulose is also one of the ideal candidates. Nanocellulose is a promising filler with many excellent properties such as renewability, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, reactive surface, low density, high specific surface area, high tensile and elastic modulus. However, it has some limitations in hydrophobicity, solubility and compatibility and therefore it is very difficult to achieve good dispersion and interfacial properties with the natural rubber matrix. Surface modification is often carried out to enhance the interfacial compatibilities between nanocellulose and natural rubber and to alleviate difficulties in dispersing them in polar solvents or polymers. This paper aims to highlight the different surface modification methods employed by several researchers in modifying nanocellulose and its reinforcement effects in the natural rubber matrix. The mechanism of the different surface medication methods has been discussed. The review also lists out the conventional filler that had been used as reinforcing agent for natural rubber. The challenges and future prospective has also been concluded in the last part of this review.

The OPERA experiment was designed to discover the v τ appearance in a v μ beam, due to neutrino oscillations. The detector, located in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory, consisted of a nuclear photographic emulsion/lead target with a mass of about 1.25 kt, complemented by electronic detectors. It was exposed from 2008 to 2012 to the CNGS beam: an almost pure v μ beam with a baseline of 730 km, collecting a total of 1.8·10 20 protons on target. The OPERA Collaboration eventually assessed the discovery of v μ →v τ oscillations with a statistical significance of 6.1 σ by observing ten v τ CC interaction candidates. Ceramides, a class of sphingolipids containing a backbone of sphingoid base, are the most important and effective structural component for the formation of the epidermal permeability barrier. While ceramides comprise approximately 50% of the epidermal lipid content by mass, the content is substantially decreased in certain inflammatory skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis (AD), causing improper barrier function. It is widely accepted that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) can modulate a number of biological responses in the central nerve system, prior studies revealed that activation of endocannabinoid receptor CB1, a key component of ECS, triggers the generation of ceramides that mediate neuronal cell fate. However, as the impact of ECS on the production of epidermal ceramide has not been studied, we here investigated whether the ECS stimulates the generation of epidermal ceramides in an IL-4-treated in vitro model of skin inflammation using N-palmitoyl serinol (PS), an analog of the endocannabinoid N-palmitoyl ethanolamine. Accordingly, an IL-4-mediated decrease in cellular ceramide levels was significantly stimulated in human epidermal keratinocytes (KC) following PS treatment through both de novo ceramide synthesis- and sphingomyelin hydrolysis-pathways. Importantly, PS selectively increases ceramides with long-chain fatty acids (FAs) (C22-C24), which mainly account for the formation of the epidermal barrier, through activation of ceramide synthase (CerS) 2 and Cer3 in IL-4-mediated inflamed KC. Furthermore, blockade of cannabinoid receptor CB1 activation by AM-251 failed to stimulate the production of total ceramide as well as long-chain ceramides in response to PS. These studies demonstrate that an analog of endocannabinoid, PS, stimulates the generation of specific ceramide species as well as the total amount of ceramides via the endocannabinoid receptor CB1-dependent mechanism, thereby resulting in the enhancement of epidermal permeability barrier function.

Background: Autism, a childhood behavioral disorder, belongs to a large suite of diseases, collectively referred to as autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Though multifactorial in etiology, approximately 10% of ASD are associated with atopic dermatitis (AD). Moreover, ASD prevalence increases further as AD severity worsens, though these disorders share no common causative mutations. We assessed here the link between these two disorders in the standard, valproic acid mouse model of ASD. In prior studies, there was no evidence of skin involvement, but we hypothesized that cutaneous involvement could be detected in experiments conducted in BALB/c mice. BALB/c is an albino, laboratory-bred strain of the house mouse and is among the most widely used inbred strains used in animal experimentation., Methods: We performed our studies in valproic acid (VPA)-treated BALB/c hairless mice, a standard mouse model of ASD. Mid-trimester pregnant mice received a single intraperitoneal injection of either valproic acid sodium salt dissolved in saline or saline alone on embryonic day 12.5 and were housed individually until postnatal day 21. Only the brain and epidermis appeared to be affected, while other tissues remain unchanged. At various postnatal time points, brain, skin and blood samples were obtained for histology and for quantitation of tissue sphingolipid content and cytokine levels., Results: AD-like changes in ceramide content occurred by day one postpartum in both VPA-treated mouse skin and brain. The temporal co-emergence of AD and ASD, and the AD phenotype-dependent increase in ASD prevalence correlated with early appearance of cytokine markers (i.e., interleukin [IL]-4, 5, and 13), as well as mast cells in skin and brain. The high levels of interferon (IFN)γ not only in skin, but also in brain likely account for a significant decline in esterified very-long-chain N-acyl fatty acids in brain ceramides, again mimicking known IFNγ-induced changes in AD., Conclusion: Baseline involvement of both AD and ASD could reflect concurrent neuro- and epidermal toxicity, possibly because both epidermis and neural tissues originate from the embryonic neuroectoderm. These studies illuminate the shared susceptibility of the brain and epidermis to a known neurotoxin, suggesting that the atopic diathesis could be extended to include ASD.

For the first time, this study demonstrates a direct extraction of carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (c-CNCs) from recycled medium density fiberboard (r-MDF) fibers by ammonium persulfate (APS) without any chemical pre-treatment. The aim of this research was to find an optimum condition for isolating c-CNCs from r-MDF fibers by studying the effect of reaction parameters on the characteristics of c-CNCs. The rod-like c-CNCs had an average length and width of 170 to 365 nm and 13 to 17 nm, leading to an aspect ratio of 13∼21. The optimum conditions for a maximum yield and crystallinity were obtained at a reaction temperature of 70 °C, reaction time of 16 h and APS concentration of 1.5 mol L -1 . Thermal analysis also revealed lower thermal stability of the c-CNCs compared to r-MDF fibers. Modeling the shape of the scalp and face is essential for the design of protective helmets and other head-borne equipment. However, head anthropometry studies using optical scanning rarely capture scalp shape because of hair interference. Data on scalp shape is available from bald men, but female data are generally not available. To address this issue, scalp shape was digitized in an ethnically diverse sample of 100 adult women, age 18-59, under a protocol that included whole head surface scanning and scalp measurement using a three-dimensional (3D) coordinate digitizer. A combined male and female sample was created by adding 3D surface scans of a similarly diverse sample of 80 bald men. A statistical head shape model was created by standardizing the head scan data. A total of 58 anatomical head landmarks and 12 head dimensions were obtained from each scan and processed along with the scans. A parametric model accounting for the variability of the head shape under the hair as a function of selected head dimensions was developed. The full-variable model has a mean shape error of 3.8 mm; the 95th percentile error was 7.4 mm, which were measured at the vertices. The model will be particularly useful for generating a series of representing a target population as well as for generating subject-specific head shapes along with predicted landmarks and dimensions. Emerging evidence indicates that Huntington's disease (HD) may be described as multi-organ pathology. In this context, we and others have contributed to demonstrate that the disease is characterized by an impairment of the homeostasis of gastro-intestinal (GI) tract. Sphingolipids represent a class of molecules involved in the regulation and maintenance of different tissues and organs including GI system. In this study, we investigated whether the alteration of Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) metabolism, previously described in human HD brains and animal models, is also detectable peripherally in R6/2 HD mice. Our findings indicate, for the first time, that sphingolipid metabolism is perturbed early in the disease in the intestinal tract of HD mice and, its modulation by K6PC-5, a selective activator of S1P synthesis, preserved intestinal integrity and homeostasis. These results further support the evidence that modulation of sphingolipid pathways may represent a potential therapeutic option in HD and suggest that it has also the potential to counteract the peripheral disturbances which may usually complicate the management of the disease and affect patient's quality of life., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. Citric acid (CA) can be found naturally in fruits and vegetables, particularly citrus fruit. CA is widely used in many fields but its usage as a green modifying agent and binder for wood is barely addressed. Esterification is one of the most common chemical reactions applied in wood modification. CA contains three carboxyl groups, making it possible to attain at least two esterification reactions that are required for crosslinking when reacting with the hydroxyl groups of the cell wall polymers. In addition, the reaction could form ester linkages to bring adhesivity and good bonding characteristics, and therefore CA could be used as wood binder too. This paper presents a review concerning the usage of CA as a wood modifying agent and binder. For wood modification, the reaction mechanism between wood and CA and the pros and cons of using CA are discussed. CA and its combination with various reactants and their respective optimum parameters are also compiled in this paper. As for the major wood bonding component, the bonding mechanism and types of wood composites bonded with CA are presented. The best working conditions for the CA in the fabrication of wood-based panels are discussed. In addition, the environmental impacts and future outlook of CA-treated wood and bonded composite are also considered.

Although several agents have been identified to provide therapeutic benefits in Huntington disease (HD), the number of conventionally used treatments remains limited and only symptomatic. Thus, it is plausible that the need to identify new therapeutic targets for the development of alternative and more effective treatments is becoming increasingly urgent. Recently, the sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) axis has been reported to be a valid potential novel molecular target for therapy development in HD. Modulation of aberrant metabolism of S1P in HD has been proved to exert neuroprotective action in vitro settings including human HD iPSC-derived neurons. In this study, we investigated whether promoting S1P production by stimulating Sphingosine Kinase 1 (SPHK1) by the selective activator, K6PC-5, may have therapeutic benefit in vivo in R6/2 HD mouse model. Our findings indicate that chronic administration of 0.05 mg/kg K6PC-5 exerted an overall beneficial effect in R6/2 mice. It significantly slowed down the progressive motor deficit associated with disease progression, modulated S1P metabolism, evoked the activation of pro-survival pathways and markedly reduced the toxic mutant huntingtin (mHtt) aggregation. These results suggest that K6PC-5 may represent a future therapeutic option in HD and may potentially counteract the perturbed brain function induced by deregulated S1P pathways.

Objective: Studies of vehicle occupant motions in response to abrupt vehicle maneuvers have demonstrated movements that may result in changes in the level of protection for the occupant if a crash subsequently occurs. The previous studies have typically used a single vehicle. The current study assesses whether the patterns of occupant head movement are different across passenger vehicle types. Method: Data collection was conducted on a closed test track with the same driver for all trials. A passenger sedan, a minivan, and a pickup truck were equipped with inertial measurement units to quantify vehicle dynamics. Head location was tracked using Microsoft Kinect v2 sensor and a novel methodology that fits 3 D head scan data to the depth data acquired in the vehicle. Twelve men and women with a wide range of body size and age were recruited. The primary purpose of the study was obfuscated by telling the participants that the focus was on vehicle ride motion. Participants sat in the right front seat and wore the vehicle belt. The first event during the test track route was a hard brake (approximately 1 g) to a stop from 35 mph (56 kph). Within the space of approximately 5 min the participants also experienced two aggressive, right-going lane changes, a sharp right turn with simultaneous hard braking, and a second hard braking event. The vehicles were presented in random order for each participant. This paper presents comparison across vehicles of head motions in the braking and lane-change maneuvers. Results: Accelerations were similar across the vehicles for both braking and lane-change events. The means (standard deviations) of forward head-CG excursion in the first braking event were 162 (54), 112 (39), and 176 (46) mm for the minivan, passenger car, and truck, respectively. The forward head excursion in the passenger car was found to be significantly smaller than in the other two vehicles using a paired t -test ( p  < 0.01). Across vehicles, the mean excursion in the second braking exposure was smaller than in the first ( p  < 0.01). In the first lane change event, the mean (SD) inboard head excursions were 126 (51), 110 (49), and 140 (68) mm; the values were not significantly different across vehicles or in the second lane-change event. A detailed investigation did not reveal an explanation for the smaller head excursions in the passenger car. Discussion: This is the first quantitative occupant kinematics study to compare responses across vehicles. Although a significant difference was found between vehicles, the overall responses are similar to those observed in a previous study. Conclusions: The results confirm previous studies showing large variance in excursions across occupants. Further study is needed to understand the factors that affect responses across vehicles.

Heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a serious adverse drug reaction caused by transient antibodies against platelet factor 4 (PF4)/heparin complexes, resulting in platelet activation and potentially fatal arterial and/or venous thrombosis. Most cases of HIT respond to cessation of heparin and administration of an alternative non-heparin anticoagulant, but there are cases of persisting HIT, defined as thrombocytopenia due to platelet activation/consumption for greater than seven days despite standard therapy. These patients remain at high risk for thrombotic events, which may result in limb-loss and mortality. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) has been proposed as an adjunct therapy for these refractory cases based on its ability to saturate FcγRIIa receptors on platelets, thus preventing HIT antibody binding and platelet activation. We describe 2 cases of persisting HIT (strongly positive antigen and functional assays, and persisting thrombocytopenia >7 days) with rapid clinical response to IVIg. We performed in-vitro experiments to support IVIg response. Healthy donor platelets (1 × 10e6) were treated with PF4 (3.75 μg/mL) for 20 min followed by 1-hour incubation with patients' sera. Platelet activation with and without addition of IVIg (levels equivalent to those reached in a patient after treatment with 2 gm/Kg) was evaluated in the PF4-dependent P-selectin expression assay (PEA). A significantly decreased platelet activation was demonstrated after the addition of IVIg to both patient samples, which correlated well with the rapid clinical response that each patient experienced. The OPERA experiment was designed to study ν&#95;{μ}→ν&#95;{τ} oscillations in the appearance mode in the CERN to Gran Sasso Neutrino beam (CNGS). In this Letter, we report the final analysis of the full data sample collected between 2008 and 2012, corresponding to 17.97×10^{19} protons on target. Selection criteria looser than in previous analyses have produced ten ν&#95;{τ} candidate events, thus reducing the statistical uncertainty in the measurement of the oscillation parameters and of ν&#95;{τ} properties. A multivariate approach for event identification has been applied to the candidate events and the discovery of ν&#95;{τ} appearance is confirmed with an improved significance level of 6.1σ. |Δm&#95;{32}^{2}| has been measured, in appearance mode, with an accuracy of 20%. The measurement of the ν&#95;{τ} charged-current cross section, for the first time with a negligible contamination from ν[over ¯]&#95;{τ}, and the first direct evidence for the ν&#95;{τ} lepton number are also reported.

Background: Few tools exist to quantify body mass index visually., Objective: To examine the inter-rater reliability and validity (sensitivity and specificity for overweight/obesity and obesity) of a three-dimensional visual rating system to quantify body mass index (BMI) in young children., Methods: Children (n = 242, mean age 5.9 years, 50.0% male; 40.5% overweight/ obese) participated in a videotaped protocol and weight and height were measured. Research staff applied a novel three-dimensional computer-based figure rating system (shapecoder) to the child's videotaped image. Inter-rater reliability was calculated, as well as correlation with measured body mass index (BMI) and sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value for overweight/obesity and obesity., Results: Inter-rater reliability was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.98). The correlation of shapecoder-generated BMI with measured BMI was 0.89. For overweight/obesity, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 62%, 97%, 94% and 79% respectively. For obesity, these values were 65%, 99%, 97% and 92% respectively., Conclusion: shapecoder provides a method to quantify child BMI from video images with high inter-rater reliability, fair sensitivity and good specificity for overweight/obesity and obesity. Objective: A test track study was conducted to quantify patterns of adult front seat passenger head motion during abrupt vehicle maneuvers., Method: Eighty-seven men and women with a wide range of body sizes and ages participated in data collection on a closed test track in a passenger sedan under manual control by a test driver. Because a primary goal of the study was to gather "unaware" data, the participants were instructed that the study was concerned with vehicle dynamics and they were required to read from a questionnaire taped to the top of their thighs as the drive began. The first event was a hard brake (approximately 1 g) to a stop from 35 mph (56 kph). Within the space of approximately 5 min the participants also experienced an aggressive lane change, a sharp right turn with simultaneous hard braking, and a second hard braking event. A Microsoft Kinect v2 sensor was positioned to view the area around the front passenger seat. Head location was tracked using the Kinect data with a novel methodology that fit 3D head scan data to the depth data acquired in the vehicle., Result: The mean (standard deviation) forward excursion of the estimated head center of gravity (CG) location in the first braking event was 135 (62) mm. The forward head CG excursion in the second braking event of 115 (51) mm was significantly less than that in the first, but the difference was small relative to the within-condition variance. Head excursion on the second braking trial was less than that on the first trial for 69% of participants. The mean maximum inboard head excursion in lane-change maneuvers was 118 (40) mm. Forward head excursions in braking were significantly smaller for older passengers and those with higher body mass index, but the combined factors accounted for less than 25% of the variance. Inboard head excursion in the lane-change event was significantly related to stature, but only about 7% of variance was related to body size. Head excursions for men and women did not differ significantly after accounting for body size., Discussion: This is the first quantitative occupant dynamics study to use a large, diverse sample of passengers, enabling the exploration of the effects of covariates such as age and body size., Conclusions: The data demonstrate that a relatively large range of head positions can be expected to result from abrupt vehicle maneuvers. The data do not support simple scaling of excursions based on body size.

Background: To meet the need for a subspecialized skin type system, the Baumann skin type (BST) system was proposed., Objective: To evaluate the distribution of BST types and influencing factors among Korean women., Methods: BST questionnaires were administered to 1,000 Korean women. The possible responses were as follows: oily (O) or dry (D), sensitive (S) or resistant (R), pigmented (P) or non-pigmented (N), and wrinkled (W) or tight (T). The correlations of the BST with the subjects' age, location, ultraviolet (UV) ray exposure, drinking and smoking habits, and blood type were assessed., Results: The OSNT, DSNT, DRNT, and OSNW skin types were the most common skin types (55.3%). The O, S, P, and W types accounted for 46.6%, 68.8%, 23.2%, and 31.9%, respectively. The proportion of the O and S type was the highest in Gyeongsangbuk-do (55.0%) and Seoul (77.2%). The proportion of the P and W type was the highest in Gyeongsangbuk-do (33.0%) and Chungcheong-do (39.0%). The O type decreased in the higher age group, whereas the P and W type showed a reversed tendency. In smokers, the proportion of W type was significantly higher than in the non-smokers (66.3% vs. 24.1%, p <0.05)., Conclusion: The 4 most common BST types were OSNT, DSNT, DRNT, and OSNW. In the comparison across the 4 BST parameters according to the age, region, smoking and drinking habits, occupation, blood type, and UV exposure, significant differences were observed. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation is a relevant environment factor to induce cellular senescence and photoaging. Both autophagy- and silent information regulator T1 (SIRT1)-dependent pathways are critical cellular processes of not only maintaining normal cellular functions, but also protecting cellular senescence in skin exposed to UV irradiation. In the present studies, we investigated whether modulation of autophagy induction using a novel synthetic SIRT1 activator, heptasodium hexacarboxymethyl dipeptide-12 (named as Aquatide), suppresses the UVB irradiation-induced skin aging. Treatment with Aquatide directly activates SIRT1 and stimulates autophagy induction in cultured human dermal fibroblasts. Next, we found that Aquatide-mediated activation of SIRT1 increases autophagy induction via deacetylation of forkhead box class O (FOXO) 1. Finally, UVB irradiation-induced cellular senescence measured by SA-β-gal staining was significantly decreased in cells treated with Aquatide in parallel to occurring SIRT1 activation-dependent autophagy. Together, Aquatide modulates autophagy through SIRT1 activation, contributing to suppression of skin aging caused by UV irradiation.

Objective: The shape of the current physical and computational surrogates of children used for restraint system assessments is based largely on standard anthropometric dimensions. These scalar dimensions provide valuable information on the overall size of the individual but do not provide good guidance on shape or posture. This study introduced the development of a parametric model that statistically predicts individual child body shapes in seated postures with a few given parameters., Methods: Surface geometry data from a laser scanner of children ages 3 to 11 (n = 135) were standardized by a 2-level fitting method using intermediate templates. The standardized data were analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA) to efficiently describe the body shape variance. Parameters such as stature, body mass index, erect sitting height, and 2 posture variables related to torso recline and lumbar spine flexion were associated with the PCA model using regression., Results: When the original scan data were compared with the predictions of the model using the given subject dimensions, the average root mean square error for the torso was 9.5 mm, and the 95th percentile error was 17.35 mm., Conclusions: For the first time, a statistical model of child body shapes in seated postures is available. This parametric model allows the generation of an infinite number of virtual children spanning a wide range of body sizes and postures. The results have broad applicability in product design and safety analysis. Future work is needed to improve the representation of hands and feet and to extend the age range of the model. This study presents a detailed fabrication method, together with validation, discussion, and analysis, for state-of-the-art silicon carbide (SiC) etching of vertical and bevelled structures by using inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching (ICP-RIE) for microelectronic applications. Applying different gas mixtures, a maximum bevel angle of 87° (almost vertical), large-angle bevels ranging from 40° to 80°, and small-angel bevels ranging from 7° to 17° were achieved separately using distinct gas mixtures at different ratios. We found that SF 6 with additive O 2 was effective for vertical etching, with a best etching rate of 3050 Å/min. As for the large-angle bevel structures, BCl 3  + N 2 gas mixtures show better characteristics, exhibiting a controllable and large etching angle range from 40° to 80° through the adjustment of the mixture ratio. Additionally, a Cl 2  + O 2 mixture at different ratios is applied to achieve a small-angel bevels ranging from 7° to 17°. A minimum bevel angel of approximately 7° was achieved under the specific volume of 2.4 sccm Cl 2 and 3.6 sccm O 2 . These results can be used to improve performance in various microelectronic applications including MMIC via holes, PIN diodes, Schottky diodes, JFETs' bevel mesa, and avalanche photodiode fabrication.

Previous studies have demonstrated ethnic/racial differences in cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). However, the relative contributions of body mass index (BMI), lifestyle behaviors, socioeconomic status (SES), cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, and cardiac function to these differences in CRF are unclear. In this study, we included 2,617 Dallas Heart Study participants (58.6% women, 48.6% black; 15.7% Hispanic) without CV disease who underwent estimation of CRF using a submaximal exercise test. We constructed multivariable-adjusted linear regression models to determine the association between race/ethnicity and CRF, which was defined as peak oxygen uptake (ml/kg/min). Black participants had the lowest CRF (blacks: 26.3 ± 10.2; whites: 29.0 ± 9.8; Hispanics: 29.1 ± 10.0 ml/kg/min). In multivariate analysis, both black and Hispanic participants had lower CRF after adjustment for age and gender (blacks: Std β = -0.15; p value ≤0.0001, Hispanics: Std β = -0.05, p value = 0.01; ref group: whites). However, this association was considerably attenuated for black (Std β = -0.04, p value = 0.03) and no longer significant for Hispanic ethnicity (p value = 0.56) after additional adjustment for BMI, lifestyle factors, SES, and CV risk factors. Additional adjustment for stroke volume did not substantially change the association between black race/ethnicity and CRF (Std β = -0.06, p value = 0.01). Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) provides the protection of the normal organs and a precise treatment plan through its optimization process. However, the final dose-volume histogram (DVH) obtained by this technique differs from the optimal DVH, owing to optimization convergence errors. Herein, intermediate dose calculation was applied to IMRT plans during the optimization process to solve these issues.Homogeneous and heterogeneous targets were delineated on a virtual phantom, and the final DVH for the target volume was assessed on the target coverage. The IMRT plans of 30 patients were established to evaluate the usefulness of intermediate dose calculation.The target coverage results were analogous in the three plans with homogeneous targets. Conversely, conformity indices (conformity index [CI], heterogeneity index [HI], and uniformity index [UI]) of plans with intermediate dose calculation were estimated to be more homogenous than plans without this option for heterogeneous targets (CI, 0.371 vs. 1.000; HI, 0.104 vs. 0.036; UI, 1.099 vs. 1.031 for Phantom B; and CI, 0.318 vs. 0.956; HI, 0.167 vs. 0.076; UI, 1.165 vs. 1.057 for Phantom C). In brain and prostate cancers, a slight difference between plans calculated with anisotropic analytical algorithm (AAA) was observed (HI, p = 0.043, UI, p = 0.043 for brain; HI, p = 0.042, UI, p = 0.043 for prostate). All target coverage indices were improved by intermediate dose calculation in lung cancer cases (p = 0.043).In conclusion, intermediate dose calculation in IMRT plans improves the target coverage in the target volume around heterogeneous materials. This study was aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Monte Carlo (MC) method in stereotactic radiotherapy for brain tumor. The difference in doses predicted by the conventional Ray-tracing (Ray) and the advanced MC algorithms was comprehensively investigated through the simulations for phantom and patient data, actual measurement of dose distribution, and the retrospective analysis of 77 brain tumors patients. These investigations consistently showed that the MC algorithm overestimated the dose than the Ray algorithm and the MC overestimation was generally increased as decreasing the beams size and increasing the number of beams delivered. These results demonstrated that the advanced MC algorithm would be inaccurate than the conventional Raytracing algorithm when applied to a (quasi-) homogeneous brain tumors. Thus, caution may be needed to apply the MC method to brain radiosurgery or radiotherapy.

Introduction: The management of sensitive skin, which affects over 60% of the general population, has been a long-standing challenge for both patients and clinicians. Because defective epidermal permeability barrier is one of the clinical features of sensitive skin, barrier-enhancing products could be an optimal regimen for sensitive skin. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of two barrier-enhancing products, i.e., Atopalm (®) Multi-Lamellar Emulsion (MLE) Cream and Physiogel (®) Intensive Cream for sensitive skin., Methods: 60 patients with sensitive skin, aged 22-40 years old, were randomly assigned to one group treated with Atopalm MLE Cream, and another group treated with Physiogel Intensive Cream twice daily for 4 weeks. Lactic acid stinging test scores (LASTS), stratum hydration (SC) and transepidermal water loss (TEWL) were assessed before, 2 and 4 weeks after the treatment., Results: Atopalm MLE Cream significantly lowered TEWL after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment (p < 0.01). In contrast, Physiogel Intensive Cream significantly increased TEWL after 2 weeks of treatment (p < 0.05) while TEWL significantly decreased after 4-week treatments. Moreover, both Atopalm MLE Cream and Physiogel Intensive Cream significantly increased SC hydration, and improved LASTS after 4 weeks of treatment., Conclusion: Both barrier-enhancing products are effective and safe for improving epidermal functions, including permeability barrier, SC hydration and LASTS, in sensitive skin.
