7. Postsecondary Educational Aspirations and Enrollment of Students with Learning Disabilities: The Role of Secondary Schooling Experiences

Abstract

While there have been steady increases in postsecondary education attendance by students with learning disabilities (LD), limited research has examined secondary schooling factors that may affect and promote their postsecondary educational aspirations and enrollment. Drawing on a sample of 370 students with LD from the National Longitudinal Transition Study 2 (NLTS2), the current study examined associations of a comprehensive set of factors (family, individual, school, and secondary schooling experiences) to postsecondary educational aspirations, enrollment, and alignment between the two, focusing on the role of secondary schooling experiences. Binary or multinomial logistic regression results showed that secondary schooling factors explained a significantly large amount of the variance in those outcomes; grades and school perceptions were the most consistent and critical predictors beyond other background characteristics. The schooling variables of grades, grade retention, overall school perceptions, and college entrance exams, were significantly associated with enrollment status, particularly for colleges. These findings highlight the importance of schooling experiences and the need for additional research in promoting educational aspirations and successful secondary transition to postsecondary education among students with LD. Abstract

연구목적: 본 연구는 교육과정 및 단원 설계의 틀로서 백워드 설계를 적용하여 기본 교육과정 사회과의 배움 중심 수업의 사례를 개발하고자 실시하였다. 연구방법: 백워드 설계 3단계에 의한 교육과정 재구성의 절차를 이해하고, 초등 사회과 5~6학년군 ‘촌락의 모습과 생활’ 단원에서의 배움 중심 수업 사례 개발 과정을 자세히 기술하였다. 연구결과 및 결론: 첫째, 교육과정 내 단원학습 내용과 성취기준을 살펴 학습할 핵심 개념에 대한 키워드를 추출하고, 고차원적인 사고의 적용 및 일반화된 지식을 포함하여 해당 단원 학습에 대한 목표 및 본질적인 핵심질문을 수립하였다. 둘째, 수업을 통한 변화와 배움에 대한 증거를 수립하는 과정에서 가능한 수행동사를 사용하여 평가의 기준과 방법을 설정하는 사례를 수행과제에 기초하여 제시하였다. 셋째, 해당 단원의 기존 전개 계획을 촌락의 모습, 생활, 변화에 대한 핵심 개념에 따라 18차시로 재구성하여 제시하였으며, 그 중 4차시 본시학습을 배움열기-배움활동-배움다지기로 구성하여 교수·학습 과정안을 사례로 제공하였다. 이처럼 특수교육대상학생에게 진정한 배움이 일어날 수 있도록 백워드 설계를 활용한 교육과정 및 단원 재구성의 구현 가능성을 나타낸 개발 사례에 기초하여 특수교육 교육과정 설계 및 수업에의 시사점 및 후속 연구에 대해 논의하였다.

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the capacity of the automatic detection system to accurately grade, from smartphones' selfie pictures, the severity of seven new facial signs added to the nine previously integrated. Methods: A two‐step approach was conducted: first, to check on 112 Korean women, how the AI‐based automatic grading system may correlate with dermatological assessments, taken as reference; second, to confirm on 1140 women of three ancestries (African, Asian, and Caucasian) the relevance of the newly input facial signs. Results: The sixteen specific Asian facial signs, detected automatically, were found significantly (P <.0001) highly correlated with the clinical evaluations made by two Korean dermatologists (wrinkles: r =.90; sagging: r =.75‐.95; vascular: r =.85; pores: r =.60; pigmentation: r =.50‐.80). When applied at a larger scale on women of different ethnicities, new signs were found of good accuracy and reproducibility, albeit depending on ethnicity. Due to contrast with the innate skin complexion, the facial signs dealing with skin pigmentation were found of a much higher relevance among Asian women than African or Caucasian women. The automatic gradings were even found of a slightly higher accuracy than the clinical gradings. Conclusion: The previously used automatic grading system is now completed by adding new facial signs apt at being detected. The continuous development is now integrating some limitations with regard to the constitutive skin complexion of the self‐pictured subjects. Presenting reproducible assessments, highly correlated with medical grading, this system could change tremendously clinical researches, like in epidemiological studies, where it offers an easy, fast, affordable, and confidential approach in the objective quantification of facial signs. 44. Delegation Process of Virtual Countries: From Non-State Actors To State Actors

Abstract

The identity of each nation on the Internet is represented through country code top-level domain names (ccTLDs). This article uses regime theory to describle the process of delegating ccTLDs, also known as virtual countries. Initially, non-state actors appointed by the emperor of virtual countries, Jon Postel, administered the virtual countries. There was no challenge from state actors until the ICANN regime was created by the US government in 1998. Unlike other international regine, the ICANN 'regime' recognizes non-state actors as decision makers while state actors as advisors for the virtual countries in their decision-making process. This has often led to conflicts within the national regime of many virtual countries. This study found that more and more state actors have expressed their willingness and interests in administering their virtual countries. Governments have started to emerge as a threatening power to the nbon-state actors of the virtual regime as a competitive power in managing the virtual countries.
