The interplay between ferromagnetism and the non-trivial topology has unveiled intriguing phases in the transport of charges and spins. For example, it is consistently observed the so-called topological Hall effect (THE) featuring a hump structure in the curve of the Hall resistance (Rxy) vs. a magnetic field (H) of a heterostructure consisting of a ferromagnet (FM) and a topological insulator (TI). The origin of the hump structure is still controversial between the topological Hall effect model and the multi-component anomalous Hall effect (AHE) model. In this work, we have investigated a heterostructure consisting of BixSb2-xTeySe3-y (BSTS) and Cr2Te3 (CT), which are well-known TI and two-dimensional FM, respectively. By using the so-called minor-loop measurement, we have found that the hump structure observed in the CT/BSTS is more likely to originate from two AHE channels. Moreover, by analyzing the scaling behavior of each amplitude of two AHE with the longitudinal resistivities of CT and BSTS, we have found that one AHE is attributed to the extrinsic contribution of CT while the other is due to the intrinsic contribution of BSTS. It implies that the proximity-induced ferromagnetic layer inside BSTS serves as a source of the intrinsic AHE, resulting in the hump structure explained by the two AHE model.

Identifying the intrinsic and extrinsic origins of magneto-transport in spin-orbit coupled systems has long been a central theme in condensed matter physics. However, it has been elusive owing to the lack of an appropriate experimental tool. In this work, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy, we unambiguously disentangle the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) of a permalloy film. We find that the scattering-independent intrinsic contribution to AMR is sizable and is as large as the scattering-dependent extrinsic contribution to AMR. Moreover, the portion of intrinsic contribution to total AMR increases with increasing temperature due to the reduction of extrinsic contribution. Further investigation reveals that the reduction of extrinsic contribution is caused by the phonon/magnon-induced negative AMR. Our result will stimulate further researches on other spin-orbit-interaction-induced phenomena for which identifying the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions is important.

Nanoscale layered ferromagnets have demonstrated fascinating two-dimensional magnetism down to atomic layers, providing a peculiar playground of spin orders for investigating fundamental physics and spintronic applications. However, strategy for growing films with designed magnetic properties is not well established yet. Herein, we present a versatile method to control the Curie temperature (T_{C}) and magnetic anisotropy during growth of ultrathin Cr_{2}Te_{3} films. We demonstrate increase of the TC from 165 K to 310 K in sync with magnetic anisotropy switching from an out-of-plane orientation to an in-plane one, respectively, via controlling the Te source flux during film growth, leading to different c-lattice parameters while preserving the stoichiometries and thicknesses of the films. We attributed this modulation of magnetic anisotropy to the switching of the orbital magnetic moment, using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism analysis. We also inferred that different c-lattice constants might be responsible for the magnetic anisotropy change, supported by theoretical calculations. We investigate the effect of capping layer (CAP) on the interfacial magnetic anisotropy energy density (K_S), magnetic damping ({\alpha}), and spin-orbit torques (SOTs) in heavy-metal (Pt) / ferromagnet (Co or Py) / CAP (MgO/Ta, HfOx, or TaN). At room temperature (RT) the CAP materials influence the effective magnitude of K_S, which is associated with a formation of interfacial magnetic oxides. The dynamical dissipation parameters of Co are considerably influenced by the CAP (especially MgO) while those of Py are not. This is possibly due to an extra magnetic damping via spin-pumping process across the Co/CoO interface and incoherent magnon generation (spin fluctuation) in the interfacial CoO. It is also observed that both anti-damping and field-like SOT efficiencies vary marginally with the CAP in the thickness ranges we examined. Our results reveal the crucial role of interfacial oxides on the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, magnetic damping, and SOTs.

Spin-orbit torque facilitates efficient magnetization switching via an in-plane current in perpendicularly magnetized heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures. The efficiency of spin-orbit-torque-induced switching is determined by the charge-to-spin conversion arising from either bulk or interfacial spin-orbit interactions, or both. Here, we demonstrate that the spin-orbit torque and the resultant switching efficiency in Pt/CoFeB systems are significantly enhanced by an interfacial modification involving Ti insertion between the Pt and CoFeB layers. Spin pumping and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments reveal that this enhancement is due to an additional interface-generated spin current of the nonmagnetic interface and/or improved spin transparency achieved by suppressing the proximity-induced moment in the Pt layer. Our results demonstrate that interface engineering affords an effective approach to improve spin-orbit torque and thereby magnetization switching efficiency.

Magnetic skyrmions are swirling magnetic textures with novel characteristics suitable for future spintronic and topological applications. Recent studies confirmed the room-temperature stabilization of skyrmions in ultrathin ferromagnets. However, such ferromagnetic skyrmions show undesirable topological effect, the skyrmion Hall effect, which leads to their current-driven motion towards device edges, where skyrmions could easily be annihilated by topographic defects. Recent theoretical studies have predicted enhanced current-driven behaviour for antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled skyrmions. Here we present the stabilization of these skyrmions and their current-driven dynamics in ferrimagnetic GdFeCo films. By utilizing element-specific X-ray imaging, we find that the skyrmions in the Gd and FeCo sublayers are antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled. We further confirm that ferrimagnetic skyrmions can move at a velocity of ~50 m s-1 with reduced skyrmion Hall angle, {\theta}SkHE ~20{\deg}. The relative contribution of spin pumping and spin rectification from the ferromagnetic resonance of CoFeB/non-magnetic bilayers was investigated as a function of non-magnetic electrode resistance. Samples with highly resistive electrodes of Ta or Ti exhibit a stronger spin rectification signal, which may result in over-(or under-)estimation of the spin Hall angle of the materials, while those with low resistive electrodes of Pt or Pd show the domination of the inverse spin Hall effect from spin pumping. We report the thermal spin injection and accumulation in crystalline CoFe/MgO tunnel contacts to n-type Si through Seebeck spin tunneling (SST). With the Joule heating (laser heating) of Si (CoFe), the thermally induced spin accumulation is detected by means of the Hanle effect for both polarities of the temperature gradient across the tunnel contact. The magnitude of the thermal spin signal scales linearly with the heating power and its sign is reversed as we invert the temperature gradient, demonstrating the major features of SST and thermal spin accumulation. We observe that, for the Si (CoFe) heating, the thermal spin signal induced by SST corresponds to the majority (minority) spin accumulation in the Si. Based on a quantitative comparison of thermal and electrical spin signals, it is noted that the thermal spin injection through SST can be a viable approach for the efficient injection of spin accumulation, Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

We have investigated the electrical Hanle effect with magnetic fields applied at an oblique angle ({\theta}) to the spin direction (the oblique Hanle effect, OHE) in CoFe/MgO/semiconductor (SC) contacts by employing a three-terminal measurement scheme. The electrical oblique Hanle signals obtained in CoFe/MgO/Si and CoFe/MgO/Ge contacts show clearly different line shapes depending on the spin lifetime of the host SC. Notably, at moderate magnetic fields, the asymptotic values of the oblique Hanle signals (in both contacts) are consistently reduced by a factor of cos^2({\theta}) irrespective of the bias current and temperature. These results are in good agreement with predictions of the spin precession and relaxation model for the electrical oblique Hanle effect. At high magnetic fields where the magnetization of CoFe is significantly tilted from the film plane to the magnetic field direction, we find that the observed angular dependence of voltage signals in the CoFe/MgO/Si and CoFe/MgO/Ge contacts are well explained by the OHE, considering the misalignment angle between the external magnetic field and the magnetization of CoFe., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

Combined measurements of normal and inverted Hanle effects in CoFe/MgO/semiconductor (SC) contacts reveal the effect of spin relaxation rate on the interfacial spin depolarization (ISD) from local magnetic fields. Despite the similar ferromagnetic electrode and interfacial roughness in both CoFe/MgO/Si and CoFe/MgO/Ge contacts, we have observed clearly different features of the ISD depending on the host SC. The precession and relaxation of spins in different SCs exposed to the local fields from more or less the same ferromagnets give rise to a notably different ratio of the inverted Hanle signal to the normal one. At room temperature, a large ISD is observed in the CoFe/MgO/Si contact, but a small ISD in the CoFe/MgO/Ge contact. The ISD of the CoFe/MgO/Ge contact has been substantially increased at low temperature. These results can be ascribed to the difference of spin relaxation in host SCs. A model calculation of the ISD, considering the spin precession due to the local field and the spin relaxation in the host SC, explains the temperature and bias dependence of the ISD consistently., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

We first report the all-electrical spin injection and detection in CoFe/MgO/moderately doped n-Ge contact at room temperature (RT), employing threeterminal Hanle measurements. A sizable spin signal of ~170 k{\Omega} {\mu}m^2 has been observed at RT, and the analysis using a single-step tunneling model gives a spin lifetime of ~120 ps and a spin diffusion length of ~683 nm in Ge. The observed spin signal shows asymmetric bias and temperature dependences which are strongly related to the asymmetry of the tunneling process., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the influence of the domain wall ferromagnetic resonance frequency on the spin transfer torque in a ferromagnetic nanowire. By employing micromagnetic simulations with the spin transfer torque, we find that the domain wall resonance frequency decreases with increasing spin polarized current density, when there is no change in the resonance frequency of the domain itself. Surprisingly, the variation of the resonance frequency is remarkable (> 1.6 GHz) with the spin transfer torque even though the domain wall is pinned. Since the presented domain wall ferromagnetic resonance study has been performed for the pinned domain wall, the contributions of extrinsic defects are excluded. We investigate the magnetic thermal noise in magnetic nanowires with and without a domain wall by employing micromagnetic simulations. The magnetic thermal noise due to random thermal fluctuation fields gives important physical quantities related with the magnetic susceptibility. We find that the resonance frequency of a domain wall is distinguishable from one of a magnetic domain itself. For the single domain without a domain wall, the resonance frequency is well described by the Kittel's formula considering a ferromagnetic specimen as a simple ellipsoid with demagnetizing factors for various wire widths and thicknesses. However, additional resonance frequencies from the magnetic domain wall show the different dependences of the wire width and thickness. It implies that the spins inside the domain wall have different effective fields and the spin dynamics., Comment: 5 figures
