Suaeda glauca, a halophyte in the Amaranthaceae family, exhibits remarkable resilience to high salt and alkali stresses despite the absence of salt glands or vesicles in its leaves. While there is growing pharmacological interest in S. glauca, research on its secondary metabolites remains limited. In this study, chemical constituents of the aerial parts of S. glauca were identified using 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments, and its biological activity concerning hair loss was newly reported. Eight compounds, including alkaloids (1~3), flavonoids (4~6), and phenolics (7 and 8), were isolated. The compounds, except the flavonoids, were isolated for the first time from S. glauca. In the HPLC chromatogram, quercetin-3-O-β-d-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-β-d-glucoside, and kaempferol were identified as major constituents in the extract of S. glauca. Additionally, the therapeutic potential of the extract of S. glauca and the isolated compounds 1~8 on the expressions of VEGF and IGF-1, as well as the regulation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling, were evaluated in human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs) and human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Among the eight compounds, compound 4 was the most potent in terms of increasing the expression of VEGF and IGF-1 and the regulation of Wnt/β-catenin. Background: Cerebral venous and sinus thrombosis (CVST) can cause increased intracranial pressure, often leading to papilledema. In this study, we investigated the association between papilledema and venous stasis on susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) in CVST. Methods: Patients with CVST between 2008 and 2020 were reviewed. Patients without fundoscopic examination or SWI were excluded in this study. Venous stasis was evaluated and scored for each cerebral hemisphere: each hemisphere was divided into 5 regions according to the venous drainage territories (superior sagittal sinus, Sylvian veins, transverse sinus and vein of Labbé, deep cerebral veins, and medullary veins) and 1 point was added if venous prominence was confirmed in one territory on SWI. The venous stasis score on SWI between cerebral hemispheres with and without papilledema was compared. Results: Eight of 19 patients with CVST were excluded because of the absence of fundoscopic examination or SWI. Eleven patients (26.5 ± 2.1 years) were included in this study. Papilledema was identified in 6 patients: bilateral papilledema in 4 patients and unilateral papilledema in 2 patients. The venous stasis score on SWI was significantly higher (P = 0.013) in the hemispheres with papilledema (median, 4.0; 95% CI, 3.038–4.562) than in the hemispheres without papilledema (median, 2.5; 95% CI, 0.695–2.805). Conclusions: This study shows that higher score of venous stasis on SWI is associated with papilledema. Therefore, the venous stasis on SWI may be an imaging surrogate marker of increased intracranial pressure in patients with CVST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a simple yet effective pipeline for absolute three-dimensional (3D) human pose estimation from two-dimensional (2D) joint keypoints, namely, the 2D-to-3D human pose lifting problem. Our method comprises two simple baseline networks, a 3D conversion function, and a correction network. The former two networks predict the root distance and the root-relative joint distance simultaneously. Given the input and predicted distances, the 3D conversion function recovers the absolute 3D pose, and the correction network reduces 3D pose noise caused by input uncertainties. Furthermore, to cope with input noise implicitly, we adopt a Siamese architecture that enforces the consistency of features between two training inputs, i.e., ground truth 2D joint keypoints and detected 2D joint keypoints. Finally, we experimentally validate the advantages of the proposed method and demonstrate its competitive performance over state-of-the-art absolute 2D-to-3D pose-lifting methods. The purpose of this randomized controlled clinical trial was to assess the short-term clinical effectiveness of sealer-based root canal obturation using calcium-silicate-based sealer (CSBS) and epoxy-resin-based sealer (ERBS). A total of eighty patients (eighty teeth) were enrolled and seventy-two patients (seventy-two teeth) were randomly assigned into four different sealer groups: AH Plus (AH, Dentsply Sirona), ADseal (AD, Meta Biomed), CeraSeal (CS, Meta Biomed), or EndoSeal TCS (ES, Maruchi). At the first visit, root canal treatment was performed using ProTaper. Next, the NiTi file system and passive ultrasonic irritation was applied with 2.5% NaOCl. At the second visit, the teeth were obturated with a sealer-based obturation technique using the assigned sealer. The quality of filling obturation was evaluated with postoperative radiographs in terms of the presence of voids and sealer extrusion. The patients were recalled at 1-week, 1-month, and 3-month intervals, and pain levels were measured using visual analog scales (VAS), and clinical examination performed with percussion and palpation. Radiographs were also taken. The results were statistically compared by using the χ2 test or Fisher exact test. Among the 80 teeth included, 72 teeth received allocated intervention and 71 teeth were included in the analysis (98.6% recall). There was no significant difference among the sealers in void and sealer extrusion (p > 0.05). Postoperative pain was not indicated prominently regardless of the type of sealer. For a 3-month follow-up period, all cases were maintained successfully except for one case from AD. According to the findings, there was no significant difference between CSBS and ERBS in terms of postoperative pain or the healing process, and the variation in filling quality appears to be linked to the properties of each product. In recent years, the incidence of cardiovascular disease is high due to the aging population and westernization of dietary habits, what encourages researching new methods. Most cardiovascular procedures use the catheter. In the procedure using a catheter, a long time of training is required to lower the procedure risk. So, a medical training simulator is being developed. In the actual procedure, the position of the catheter is confirmed by a C-arm using X-ray, but there is a risk of over exposure to radiation if the X-ray device is used until training. To solve this problem, in previous studies, the position of the catheter was tracked using a permanent magnet. However, the method of permanent magnet has a high error value due to the shape of the external magnetic flux density and the interference of environmental magnetic field. In this paper, an alternating magnetic field generator is proposed for 3D position tracking of medical equipment for training. An electromagnet with an optimal shape was designed through finite element analysis. The designed electromagnet is implemented and tested to confirm the performance. Through the location tracking experiment, an equation to estimate the distance between the electromagnet and the Hall sensor in 3D space was derived by linear regression recursive method. Through the derived equation, it was possible to track the position of the electromagnet at any position in the 3D space. Unlike previous studies using permanent magnets, the proposed alternating magnetic field generator has an isotropic shape with an external magnetic flux density according to the same distance. So, it is possible to reduce errors in position and distance, and minimize the effect of environmental magnetic fields by using an alternating magnetic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Skyrmion-based devices are an attractive candidate for nonvolatile memory and low-power computation. In a real device, however, skyrmions easily annihilate at device edges, which hampers device applications. Here, we present a novel skyrmion-based logic device, which takes advantage of the skyrmion annihilation (SA) and increases the efficiency of logic operation. An SA half adder (HA) is implemented in a ferromagnet/heavy metal nanotrack by introducing a geometric notch that annihilates the skyrmion. In addition, full adder and n-bit SA ripple-carry adder are demonstrated by directly cascading the SA HAs. The prototype of a 32-bit SA ripple-carry adder consumes energy as low as 0.62 pJ per each operation, which is only 18% of the previously proposed skyrmion adder. Aqueous hybrid capacitors (AHCs) are very promising electrochemical energy devices due to their being safe, cheap, and environmentally friendly, but their low energy and power densities are yet to be overcome for prolonged operation in a single fast charging device. Herein, a strategy to realize high‐energy density and ultrafast rechargeable AHCs is reported. A thorn‐covered core–shell conductive multivalence metal sulfide is synthesized as a cathode material that achieves high capacity via multivalence Ni and Co states and contains multiple mesoporous channels for fast ion transfer and ultrafine nanoparticles for efficient contact with electrolyte ions. Moreover, the multivalence metal states of the Fe1−xS anode units loaded on a three‐dimensional carbon structure with the mesoporous holes attain high capacity even at a very fast charging rate (20 A g−1, ≈86.4 C rate). The proposed AHC exploits the advantages of capacitive and diffusion‐controlled reactions. This is demonstrated by its high‐energy density (up to 120.5 Wh kg−1) surpassing that of state‐of‐the‐art AHCs and the ultrafast rechargeable power density (up to 23,998 W kg−1) that exceeds those of battery‐type reactions more than 100‐fold and provides long‐life stability for over 50 000 charge–discharge cycles. Sound normally enters the ear canal, passes through the middle ear, and stimulates the cochlea through the oval window. Alternatively, the cochlea can be stimulated in a reverse manner, namely round window stimulation. The reverse stimulation is not well understood, partly because in classic lumped-parameter models the path of reverse drive during the round window stimulation is usually not considered. The study goal is to gain a better understanding of the hearing mechanism during round window stimulation. A piezo actuator was coupled to the oval and round window of the guinea pigs. The auditory brainstem response produced by the forward and reverse stimulation at four frequencies was recorded. The results show that the input voltage of the actuator required at the hearing threshold in the round window drive was higher than that in the oval window drive. In order to understand the data, we designed a lumped-parameter cochlear model that can simulate both forward and reverse drive. The model-predicted results were consistent with the experimental results. The response of the auditory system to stimulus of oval window and round window was quantified through animal experimentation, and guinea pigs were used as experimental animals. When the same stimulus was applied to the oval window and round window of the cochlea, the ABR signals were compared. A lumped parameter model was designed to incorporate the sound transmission paths in both oval and round window stimulation. The simulated results are consistent with those of animal experiments. In this study, the corrosion behaviors of bioactive element coatings on plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-treated Ti-6Al-4V alloys were researched using various instruments for measurement of coated elements from PEO-treated surface in the solution of simulated fluid. For this research, Ti-6Al-4V ELI disks were prepared as the substrates for PEO treatment. PEO treatment was carried out using pulsed DC power supply at 280 V for 3 min in electrolytes containing bioactive ions such as silicon, zinc, manganese, magnesium, strontium, calcium, and phosphorus. To analyze the electrochemical properties of the PEO film as a function of added ions in the electrolyte, potentiodynamic and AC impedance tests were performed using a potentiostat in 0.9% NaCl solution. The alloy surface after performing a corrosion test of the PEO-treated specimen on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy was observed using a field-emission scanning microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). When a bioactive element was added during the PEO process, the pore size decreased and a precipitate containing a high Mn content was formed around the pores. The XRD results of the PEO-treated surface with bioactive elements showed that the anatase and HA phase contents increased while the Ti peak intensity decreased. When Mn was added to the electrolyte, a second anodic peak appeared, and the precipitates on the surface and pore edges were dissolved in the 0.9% NaCl solution. The interfacial electronic structures of a bilayer of fullerene (C60) and zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) grown on vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) thin films deposited using radio frequency sputtering under various conditions were studied using X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The energy difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level of the ZnPc layer and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level of the C60 layer was determined and compared with that grown on an indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate. The energy difference of a heterojunction on all V2O5 was found to be 1.3~1.4 eV, while that on ITO was 1.1 eV. This difference could be due to the higher binding energy of the HOMO of ZnPc on V2O5 than that on ITO regardless of work functions of the substrates. The main features of stroke-induced immunosuppression are lymphopenia and deactivation of monocytes in peripheral blood. We hypothesized that lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) in peripheral blood may represent the degree of stroke-induced immunosuppression. To prove this hypothesis, we evaluated whether LMR is associated with risk of post-stroke infection and clinical outcome at 3 months in patients with acute ischemic stroke. We selected patients with stroke in anterior circulation within 24 h from onset. Peripheral blood sampling for differential blood count was performed on days 1 and 7. The LMRs on days 1 and 7 were analyzed to determine associations with excellent outcomes (modified Rankin Scale of score 0-1 at 3 months). One hundred and two patients were included. The initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (adjusted odd ratio [OR] 0.89; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.83-0.95; P = 0.001) and LMR on day 7 (adjusted OR 1.49; 95% CI, 1.09-2.02; P = 0.011) were associated with excellent outcomes. LMRs on day 1 were significantly lower in stroke patients with pneumonia (P = 0.007) and pneumonia or urinary tract infection (P = 0.012) than those without infections. LMRs on day 7 were also significantly lower in stroke patients with infection (P = 0.005 in pneumonia, P = 0.003 in urinary tract infection, and P < 0.001 in pneumonia or urinary tract infection) than those without infections. Background The rs112735431 polymorphism of the RNF213 , a susceptibility variant for moyamoya disease (MMD), may be associated with non-MMD intracranial artery steno-occlusive disease of non-MMD type (non-MMD ICAD) in Asian. We investigated whether the rs112735431 polymorphism of the RNF213 affect the development of non-MMD ICAD in Koreans compared to MMD and control group. Methods We included 31 patients with non-MMD ICAD, 25 patients with MMD, and 100 participants as control group. The rs112735431 polymorphism of the RNF213 was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction amplification of target and detection by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. Clinical phenotype was compared between patients with and without the rs112735431 polymorphism in non-MMD ICAD and MMD. Results The rs112735431 polymorphism of the RNF213 was significantly associated with non-MMD ICAD (p = 0.001; odds ratio, 14.3; 95% confidence interval, 2.80–73.2) and MMD (p < 0.0001; odds ratio, 126.0; 95% confidence interval, 24.2–656.0). The rate of hypertension was more frequent in MMD with the rs112735431 polymorphism than MMD without polymorphism (p = 0.010). Conclusions The rs112735431 polymorphism of the RNF213 is highly associated not only with MMD but also with non-MMD ICAD in Koreans. Also, our study suggests that the rs112735431 polymorphism of the RNF213 may be linked to the hypertension in MMD. We report the working principle of a spin-torque oscillator, of which the frequency is efficiently controlled by manipulating the magnetostrictive anisotropy. To justify the scheme, we simulate a conventional magnetic-tunnel junction-based oscillator which is fabricated on a piezoelectric material. By applying mechanical stress to a free layer using a piezoelectric material, the oscillation frequency can be controlled to ensure a broad tuning range without a significant reduction of the dynamic resistance variation. Such controllability, which appears in the absence of an external magnetic field, will not only enable the integration of spin-torque oscillators and conventional complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor technology but will also broaden the applicability of spintorque oscillators. Background TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily and its serum level is known to be closely associated with future cardiovascular events and prognosis of various cardiovascular diseases. We investigated whether serum TRAIL levels are associated with the severity of acute ischemic stroke and specific stroke subtype. Methods We used an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to measure the serum TRAIL levels of 293 patients with acute ischemic stroke within 7 days of onset. Stroke subtype was classified as large artery atherosclerosis, cardioembolism, small vessel occlusion and other determined etiology. We used National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score of first hospital day and stroke volume on diffusion-weighted imaging within 7 days of stroke onset for measuring the severity of acute ischemic stroke. Results The level of serum TRAIL showed significant negative correlations with NIHSS score and stroke volume. Serum TRAIL levels significantly decreased as the tertile of NIHSS score and stroke volume increased. The relative risk of patients with serum TRAIL < 64.0 pg/mL for the presence of highest tertile of NIHSS score was significantly increased (adjusted OR [95%CI]; 7.07 [3.64–13.74]). Regarding stroke volume, the relative risk of patients with serum TRAIL < 71.5 pg/mL for the presence of highest tertile of stroke volume was also significantly increased (adjusted OR [95%CI]; 2.81 [1.61–4.92]). There are no significant differences of serum TRAIL level among stroke subtypes. Conclusions Low serum TRAIL levels were significantly associated with the acute ischemic stroke severity. Background: Multiple hypointense vessels (MHV) on susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) are frequently observed in patients with acute cerebral ischemia, but their implication has not been clearly established. To elucidate the clinical significance of MHV on SWI, we investigated the association of MHV on SWI with clinical data and other MR markers in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods: We enrolled acute stroke patients with internal carotid or proximal middle cerebral artery occlusion who underwent MRI including SWI within 3 days from stroke onset. Baseline clinical data were reviewed. Stroke severity was measured by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). We graded the degree of MHV on SWI as four groups of none, subtle, relative, or extensive by the modified Alberta Stroke Program Early CT Scan (ASPECTS) system. To evaluate the degree of collateral flow, distal hyperintense vessels (DHV) on FLAIR and vessels on post-contrast time-of-flight MR angiography (TOF MRA) source images were graded respectively as 3 groups: none/subtle/prominent and poor/moderate/good. Diffusion and perfusion lesion volume and diffusion-perfusion mismatch (DPM) ratio were measured in all patients. We analyzed the association of the degree of MHV on SWI with clinical data and MR markers. Results: Eighty patients were included in the study. The mean MR time from stroke onset was 12.4 h (range 0.5-63.0). There is no difference in MR time from stroke onset between groups of MHV on SWI. MHV were observed in 68 (85%) of 80 patients: none in 12, subtle in 11, relative in 13, and extensive in 44. There were no statistically significant associations between MHV on SWI and vascular risk factors. Patients with more extensive MHV on SWI had a smaller diffusion volume (p < 0.001), larger DPM (p < 0.001), and lower initial NIHSS scores (p = 0.022). Prominent DHV was presented in 29 of 44 patients with extensive MHV (p < 0.001). Good collateral flow on TOF MRA source images was presented in 37 of 44 patients with extensive MHV (p < 0.001). Conclusions: More extensive MHV on SWI in acute ischemic stroke is associated with lower initial NIHSS scores, smaller diffusion lesion volume, better collateral flow, and larger DPM. Our results show the possibility that MHV on SWI may be a useful surrogate marker for predicting increased oxygen extraction fraction and diffusion-perfusion mismatch in acute ischemic hemisphere. © 2014 S. This paper presents the electromagnetic analysis and experimental testing of a tubular linear synchronous machine (TLSM) with a double-sided axially magnetized permanent magnet (AMPM) mover and coreless stator winding by using semianalytical techniques. Using a simple result based on the finite element method (FEM), characteristics of the TLSM with AMPM can be calculated with the semianalytical method easily. The magnetic flux density in the air gap is obtained by using a magnetic vector potential, a 2-D polar coordinate system, and the results of the magnetostatic calculation based on FEM. Based on these solutions, the electromotive force (EMF) is also determined analytically. Then, 2-D FEM is employed to validate the semianalytical method. We present two algorithms for aligning two colored point clouds. The two algorithms are designed to minimize a probabilistic cost based on the color-supported soft matching of points in a point cloud to their K-closest points in the other point cloud. The first algorithm, like prior iterative closest point algorithms, refines the pose parameters to minimize the cost. Assuming that the point clouds are obtained from RGB-depth images, our second algorithm regards the measured depth values as variables and minimizes the cost to obtain refined depth values. Experiments with our synthetic dataset show that our pose refinement algorithm gives better results compared to the existing algorithms. Our depth refinement algorithm is shown to achieve more accurate alignments from the outputs of the pose refinement step. An accurate stereo matching method developed by exploiting the two techniques, discrete‐coded structured‐light projection and image‐guided cost volume filtering, is proposed. The former increases the distinctiveness of pixels by projecting a discrete pattern to the scene, and the latter helps to recover accurate object boundaries. In addition, a previous fast cost volume filtering approach is extended to better preserve slanted surfaces, and a suitable post‐processing algorithm is also suggested for the proposed method. The performance of the proposed method is experimentally verified by comparing the results with those of other algorithms qualitatively and quantitatively in an indoor environment. The aim of this study was to define the location of the accessory infraorbital foramen (AIOF) with reference to accessible external landmarks in order to facilitate orbital and oculoplastic surgical procedures in the maxillofacial region. Forty-four hemifaces from 25 cadavers were dissected. The lateral canthus, subnasal point, and lacrimal caruncle were used as anatomic reference points. The AIOF was observed in 8 of the 44 hemifaces (18.2%) and was situated at a mean distance of 7.2 mm superomedial to the IOF. The horizontal distance from the lacrimal caruncle to the AIOF was 0.3 mm. In all cases the AIOF was situated at a point that was no more than 8 mm from the intersection point of a vertical line passing through the lacrimal caruncle and an oblique line joining the lateral canthus and the subnasal point. Surgeons anesthetizing or performing surgical procedures in the maxillofacial region should be aware of the frequency of the AIOF (18.2%) and its location (on the superomedial side of the IOF). We propose that injecting at the intersection point of a vertical line passing through the lacrimal caruncle and an oblique line joining the lateral canthus and the subnasal point would successfully block the accessory branch of the infraorbital nerve. Likewise, surgeons operating in this region should be aware of the location of the AIOF in order to avoid inadvertent iatrogenic injury to a duplicated infraorbital nerve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency, clinical and radiological features, and efficacy of clinical evaluation and perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI) for the prediction of final stroke in patients with DWI/MRI-negative posterior circulation stroke (PCS) presenting acute dizziness/vertigo. From our comprehensive prospective stroke registry of acute ischemic stroke during a 7-year period, we identified 1846 consecutive patients with PCS, 850 of whom presented with acute dizziness/vertigo. Of these 850 patients, initial DWI-MRI was negative in 35 (4.1%). In these 35 patients, dizziness/vertigo was acute prolonged in 31 and recurrent transient in 4. Focal neurological signs or profound imbalance were present in 16/35 or 18/34, respectively. Spontaneous nystagmus was absent in 21/35; the HINTS protocol (head impulse, nystagmus, and test-of-skew) was not applicable to them. In 12/26 patients, PWI was positive and the same time as DWI was negative. The usual site of lesion was the lateral medulla (n = 18). Twenty-nine patients (83%) had small strokes, while 19 (54%) had large vessel strokes. The sensitivity of systematic clinical evaluation adopting neurological examination, HINTS plus, and assessment of equilibrium was 83%, for prediction of final stroke and 100% when combined with PWI. An integrated approach using systematic neurological and neuro-otological examinations combined with PWI accurately diagnoses PCS presenting with acute dizziness/vertigo. Although most patients with acute vertigo and MRI-negative PCS have small brainstem strokes, about a half have large vessel stroke with greater risk of progression requiring prompt treatment. Abstract: γ-Glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) is a novel protein involved in the induction of Helicobacter pylori-mediated apoptosis; however, the signal pathway involved in GGT-induced apoptosis remains unclear. Using DNA recombination techniques, ggt was cloned into pET117b and transformed into Escherichia coli. Recombinant GGT was purified using nickel-affinity resin and was digested by thrombin. Recombinant GGT induced apoptosis in AGS cells in a time-dependent manner, which was confirmed by TUNEL staining, the MTT assay and immunoblot analysis for caspases-9, -3, Bax, Bcl-2, Bcl-xL and cytochrome c release. Activation of caspase-3 and -9 following exposure to GGT increased in a time-dependent manner and upregulation of proapoptotic Bax and a downregulation of antiapoptotic Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL was detected. Apoptotic signals also trigger changes in mitochondria, which lead to a release of cytochrome c into the cytosolic space. The GGT-deficient mutant was not as able to induce apoptosis as the wild-type strain. These results indicate that GGT of H. pylori induces apoptosis via a mitochondria-mediated pathway. Objectives: Short sleep duration has been known to be related to metabolic syndrome (MetS) . The aim of this study was to investigate the beneficial effects of weekend catch-up sleep (WCUS) on MetS in the Korean middle-aged population.Methods: For this cross-sectional study, 1,812 participants aged 35-60 years were selected from the 2016-2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (mean age 46.94 years, 49% male). Short sleep duration was defined as <6hrs on weekdays, and participants were divided into two groups: WCUS group and no weekend catch-up sleep group. Multiple logistic regression was performed to determine the association between WCUS and MetS prevalence. The covariates included age, sex, education, income, occupation, smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity.Results: WCUS was significantly associated with lower MetS prevalence in the unadjusted model and in the model adjusted for socioeconomic and health behavior factors.Conclusion: These results support the beneficial effects of WCUS on lowering the risk of MetS among middle-aged chronic short sleepers. There is an urgent need for better detection and understanding of vascular abnormalities at the micro-level, where critical vascular nourishment and cellular metabolic changes occur. This is especially the case for structures such as the midbrain where both the feeding and draining vessels are quite small. Being able to monitor and diagnose vascular changes earlier will aid in better understanding the etiology of the disease and in the development of therapeutics. In this work, thirteen healthy volunteers were scanned with a dual echo susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) sequence, with a resolution of 0.22 ​× ​0.44 ​× ​1 ​mm3 at 3T. Ultra-small superparamagnetic iron oxides (USPIO) were used to induce an increase in susceptibility in both arteries and veins. Although the increased vascular susceptibility enhances the visibility of small subvoxel vessels, the accompanying strong signal loss of the large vessels deteriorates the local tissue contrast. To overcome this problem, the SWI data were acquired at different time points during a gradual administration (final concentration ​= ​4 ​mg/kg) of the USPIO agent, Ferumoxytol, and the data was processed to combine the SWI data dynamically, in order to see through these blooming artifacts. The major vessels and their tributaries (such as the collicular artery, peduncular artery, peduncular vein and the lateral mesencephalic vein) were identified on the combined SWI data using arterio-venous maps. Dynamically combined SWI data was then compared with previous histological work to validate that this protocol was able to detect small vessels on the order of 50 ​μm–100 ​μm. A complex division-based phase unwrapping was also employed to improve the quality of quantitative susceptibility maps by reducing the artifacts due to aliased voxels at the vessel boundaries. The smallest detectable vessel size was then evaluated by revisiting numerical simulations, using estimated true susceptibilities for the basal vein and the posterior cerebral artery in the presence of Ferumoxytol. These simulations suggest that vessels as small as 50 ​μm should be visible with the maximum dose of 4 ​mg/kg. • Low dose Ferumoxytol was used in imaging the midbrain microvasculature. • Multiple timepoints provided useful temporal information and enhanced SWI-SNR. • Novel SWI combination helped reduce blooming artifacts to reveal smaller vessels. • Complex division-based unwrapping helped improve quality of post-contrast QSM. • Histology/simulations were used to determine detectability of sub-voxel vessels. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to document the distribution of the articular branch of the lateral pectoral nerve (LPN) to the shoulder and to identify a suitable point for its blockade.Methods: This study involved the dissection of 43 shoulders of 22 unembalmed cadavers (6 male and 16 female) to identify the LPN and its articular branch to the shoulder. To identify the suitable anatomical point for blocking the articular branch of the LPN, several anatomical landmarks around the shoulder were measured.Results: The articular branch of the LPN to the shoulder was present in 29 of 43 cases (67.4 %). The appropriate point to block the articular branch of the LPN was identified at a mean distance of 1.5 cm below the clavicle, on the line connecting the closest points between the clavicle and the coracoid process, and at a mean depth of 1.0 cm from the skin.Conclusion: The articular branch of the LPN to the shoulder, as well as the muscular and cutaneous branches of the LPN, covers a portion of the shoulder joint with suprascapular and axillary nerves. The long-term durability of carotid artery stenting (CAS) may be determined by various factors; however, residual stenosis is a known risk factor for in-stent restenosis. The authors of this article utilized cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in angiosuite to investigate plaque features affecting the character and quality of stent expansion after CAS.Forty-two CAS cases with both pre- and post-CAS CBCT evaluations were included in this retrospective analysis. Five features derived from pre-CAS images were tested: (1) eccentricity, (2) overballoon, (3) maximum plaque thickness, (4) calcification barrier, and (5) stenotic degree. For post-CAS CBCT, stent configuration was assessed if the stent was expanded and oval or round in shape as well as outward or inward in orientation. Variables were tested if they were associated with oval expansion, outward expansion, and 20% residual stenosis after CAS.Oval or outward expansion is directly related to residual stenosis. The oval expansion was associated with maximum plaque thickness, and outward expansion was associated with the presence of a calcification barrier. Variables related to > 20% residual stenosis were the maximum plaque thickness, calcification barrier, and pre-CAS stenotic degree.CBCT for carotid stenosis may provide valuable information about plaque features, especially calcification features that may interfere with the angioplasty effect, as well as the characteristics and quality of stent expansion. We prospectively recruited 10 patients who presented with urinary retention as a neurological deficit that was attributable to lateral medullary infarction. Of these, 9 patients underwent a urodynamic study, which demonstrated detrusor underactivity of the bladder in 7 patients. Urinary retention developed mainly when the lesions involved the lateral tegmentum of the middle or caudal medulla. We concluded that interruption of the descending pathway from the pontine micturition center to the sacral spinal cord in the lateral medulla was responsible for the development of urinary retention. Background: The cortical vessel signs (CVSs) on susceptibility-weighted images (SWIs) have been reported in patients with hyperacute ischemic stroke. We evaluated the change of this susceptibility sign on the immediate SWI after full recanalization and its clinical implications. Methods: Nineteen hyperacute ischemic stroke patients who had acute large artery occlusion and underwent post-recanalization SWI were enrolled in this study. The patients had ICA (internal carotid artery, 2 cases), M1 (M1 segment of middle cerebral artery, 7 cases), M2 (M2 segment of middle cerebral artery, 1 cases), T (intracranial ICA bifurcation, 2 cases), ICA/M1 (4 cases) and basilar artery (3 cases) occlusion on imaging studies before thrombolysis and they underwent immediate magnetic resonance imaging, including the SWI, after full recanalization. The recanalization status was evaluated using the thrombolysis in cerebral infarction (TICI) scorebefore and after thrombolysis. The SWI images were evaluated for the presence of asymmetry of veins over the ischemic territory and this was correlated with the site of stenosis or occlusion. The veins in the ischemic territory were classified as 'prominent' if there were more numerous veins and/or large veins with a greater signal loss observed compared with the opposite normal hemisphere, 'equal' if there were no significant difference in appearance in both the cerebral hemispheres, and 'less' if the veins were decreased in the affected area as compared with that of the normal cortex. Baseline clinical parameters and clinical outcomes were reviewed. Results: The initial TICI grades were 0 in all cases. After thrombolysis, TICI grades were 3 in all cases. The pre-recanalization SWIs were obtained in 10 of 19 patients and all 10 showed prominent CVSs over the affected side, which disappeared on the post-recanalization SWI. On the post-recanalization SWI, the observed veins in the affected area were equal (10/19), less (5/19), and both equal and less (4/19). Patients with equal cortical veins in the affected area had small lesions on diffusion-weighted image (DWI) (10/19), while patients with less cortical veins had medium to large lesions on DWI (9/19). Conclusion: The prominent CVSson SWI can be indicative of acute thromboembolic occlusion and its change immediately after recanalization can be used to reflect the metabolic status. After recanalization, the appearance of the equal CVS (return to normal) on SWI was associated with a favorable clinical outcome and infarction was avoided in our small series study.
