The study aims to investigate the effect of replacing dietary maize with 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 g/kg of triticale on production performance, egg quality, yolk fatty acids, and blood variables when fed to laying hens. Five experimental diets were mixed to be isoenergetic and isonitrogenous and were fed to the layers for six weeks, from 22 to 28 week of age. Three hundred and sixty 22-week-old Hy-Line Brown laying hens were individually weighed and randomly allocated to 60 enriched cages giving six birds per cage, in an environmentally controlled experimental house. The cages were equipped with a laying nest, scratching area, metal feeders in front and two nipple drinkers inside. Each diet was fed to 12 cages following randomisation. Feed and water were available ad libitum throughout the experiment. Production variables remained unaffected by the diets containing triticale at various levels. Among the egg quality traits, egg yolk colour linearly decreased (P < 0.001) by dietary triticale inclusion. Dietary triticale did not have an impact on egg yolk fatty acid composition (P > 0.05). Apart from the glucose level, increasing in a linear fashion (P < 0.001) with triticale in diets, the rest of the studied blood variables did not respond (P > 0.05) to changes in dietary triticale. It has been concluded that 20% replacement of maize with triticale in laying hen diets did not have any detrimental impact on egg production variables and or the efficiency of production. This study aimed to develop an in vivo screening platform using Caenorhabditis elegans to identify a novel bacteriocin for controlling the mastitis-causing pathogen Staphylococcus aureus strain RF122 in dairy cows. Using Bacillus spp. isolated from traditional Korean foods, we developed a direct in vivo screening platform that uses 96-well plates and fluorescence image analysis. We identified a novel bacteriocin produced by Bacillus licheniformis strain 146 (lichenicin 146) with a high in vivo antimicrobial activity using our liquid C. elegans-Staph. aureus assay. We also determined the characteristics of lichenicin 146 using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and confirmed that it shared homologous sequences with bacteriocin family proteins. In addition, RNA-sequencing analysis revealed genes encoding cell surface or membrane proteins (SAB0993c, SAB0150, SAB0994c, and SAB2375c) that are involved in the bactericidal activity of lichenicin 146 against Staph. aureus strain RF122 infection as well as those encoding transcriptional regulators (SAB0844c and SAB0133). Thus, our direct in vivo screening platform facilitates simple, convenient, cost-effective, and reliable screening of potential antimicrobial compounds with applications in the dairy field. This study examined the effects of Maillard reaction products (MRP) and MRP fermented by lactic acid bacteria on antioxidants and their enhancement of cardiovascular health in ICR mouse and rat models. In previous in vitro studies, the selected lactic acid bacteria were shown to significantly affect the activity of MRP. The expression of genes (e.g., superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase) related to antioxidant activity was upregulated by Maillard-reacted sodium caseinate (cMRP), and cMRP fermented by Lactobacillus fermentum H9 (F-cMRP) synergistically increased the expression of catalase and superoxide dismutase when compared with the high-cholesterol-diet group. Bleeding time, the assay for determination of antithrombotic activity, was significantly prolonged by Maillard-reacted whey protein concentration (wMRP) and wMRP fermented by Lactobacillus gasseri H10 (F-wMRP), similar to the bleeding time of the aspirin group (positive control). In addition, the acute pulmonary thromboembolism-induced mice overcame severe body paralysis or death in both the wMRP and the F-wMRP groups. In the serum-level experiment, cMRP and F-cMRP significantly reduced the serum total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and triglycerides but had only a slight effect on high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The levels of aspartate transaminase and alanine transaminase also declined in the cMRP and F-cMRP intake groups compared with the high-cholesterol-diet group. In particular, F-cMRP showed the highest reducing effects on triglycerides, aspartate transaminase, and alanine transaminase. Moreover, the expression of cholesterol-related genes in the F-cMRP group demonstrated greater effects than for the cMRP group in the level of cholesterol 7 α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGR), and low-density lipoprotein receptors compared with the high-cholesterol-diet group. The protective role of cMRP and F-cMRP in the high-cholesterol group may have been the result of an antioxidative defense mechanism that regulated cholesterol synthesis and metabolism. Therefore, F-cMRP and cMRP have the potential to play preventive and therapeutic roles in the management of cardiovascular disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Caenorhabditis elegans is an accepted model host to study host-bacteria interactions in the gut, in addition to being a simple model with which to study conserved aspects of biological signaling pathways in intestinal environments, because these nematode worms have similar intestinal cells to those of humans. Here, we used C. elegans to develop a new in vivo screening system for potential probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB). Initially, critical colonization ability of LAB strains isolated from Korean infant feces was screened in the worm intestinal tract over a period of 5 d. Furthermore, we investigated host health-promoting activities, including longevity- extending effects and immune-enhancing activities against foodborne pathogen infection. We identified 4 LAB strains that were highly persistent in the nematode gut and that significantly prolonged the longevity of C. elegans and improved the survival of C. elegans in response to infection by Staphylococcus aureus. The 4 LAB strains we identified showed resistance to acid and bile conditions, assimilated cholesterol, and were able to attach to a mucus layer. The 4 LAB isolates were identified as Lactobacillus plantarum using 16S rRNA sequencing analysis. Taken together, we developed a direct in vivo screening system using C. elegans to study host health-promoting LAB. Our system is simple, rapid, cost-effective, and reliable, and we anticipate that this system will result in the discovery of many more potential probiotic bacteria for dairy foods. To treat cutting oil wastewater produced in metal surface treatment industry, Ultrasonication (US)-Fenton process, which is one of the advanced oxidation processes, was used. The optimum conditions to treat non-biodegradable pollutants using the US-Fenton process were that the application rates of H
2 O2 and FeSO4 were 10% and 3 g/L, respectively, the value of pH was 3, and the ultrasonication time was 30 min. It identified non-degradable pollutants such as ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and Triethanolamine (TEA) in the cutting oil wastewater. TLC analysis of two compounds of treated water by the coagulation process was similar to that of raw water. However, TLC analysis of two compounds of US-Fenton process was different from that of raw water, meaning that US-Fenton process decomposed the EDTA and TEA. To study the possibility of application with the US-Fenton process to pilot plant, the pollutants treatment efficiency of three different methods, such as US-Fenton process, activated sludge process and coagulation process, in continuous experiments were compared. The removal rate of pollutants by the US-Fenton process according to the effluent time was higher than any other processes. The removal rates of COD, SS, T-N and T-P by US-Fenton process were 98, 93, 75 and 95%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Telomere length indicates the replicative history of cells, serving as a molecular measure of the replicative potential remaining in cells. To investigate telomere length changes in hematopoietic stem cells, patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) were evaluated. Fifteen patients after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (allo-BMT group), seven patients after autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT group), and 39 healthy controls were studied. Telomere length was measured in peripheral mononuclear cells by Southern blot hybridization. There was no significant difference between the allo-BMT and the auto-PBSCT groups. In the allo-BMT group, the mean telomere length of recipients was 2.01 kb shorter than that of their donors (P = 0.008), and was 1.59 kb shorter than that of age-matched putative normal controls (P = 0.002). Telomere shortening in the allo-BMT group was equivalent to 41.4 years of aging in the donors, and to 52.4 years of aging in the normal controls. The mean telomere length in the auto-PBSCT group was 2.36 kb shorter than that of the age-matched putative controls (P = 0.043), which was equivalent to 61.5 years of aging in normal controls. The extent of telomere shortening in the allo-BMT group showed a trend to negative correlation with the number of mononuclear cells infused. These findings suggest that hematopoietic stem cells after HSCT lose telomere length and these shortened telomeres may result in a higher incidence of clonal disorders later in life. - Abstract
150 Korean patients undergoing primary uncemented total hip replacement were randomized into 3 treatment groups for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis. Group A(50) were controls; Group B(50) received aspirin 1.2 g daily in 3 divided doses from 2 days before, to 14 days after surgery; Group C(50), received low molecular weight dextran 500 ml, infused intravenously at 50 ml/hour during surgery, and on each of the following 2 days. Contrast venograms were performed prior to surgery and 7-10 days after. The incidence of DVT was 20% in the control group, 12% in the aspirin group (p < 0.1 vs control), and 6% in the dextran group (p < 0.05 vs control). In patients developing DVT, the ratio of proximal to distal thrombi was increased in the control group as compared to treated groups (4:1 in the control group vs 1.5:1 in the treated groups). Both aspirin and dextran were well tolerated. Obesity (p < 0.05) and long-term administration of steroids (p < 0.05) were risk factors for deep vein thrombosis which reached statistical significance in the control group. Intraoperative venograms performed on 10 patients, showed that hip flexion (mean 40.4 degrees) plus adduction (mean 11.5 degrees) plus internal rotation (mean 81.5 degrees), resulted in severe twisting or kinking of the femoral vein with stagnation of blood flow. Low molecular weight dextran significantly reduce the incidence of deep venous thrombosis and aspirin, though less effective, had a similar effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the optical properties and carrier dynamics of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in Al
0.4 Ga0.6 N/GaN single heterostructures grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition by means of photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation, and time-resolved PL spectroscopy. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations were clearly observed at 1.5 K, confirming the existence of a 2DEG. An additional 2DEG PL emission appeared at about 40 meV below the GaN band-edge emission and persisted up to about 100 K, while this peak disappeared when the top Al0.4 Ga0.6 N layer was removed by reactive ion etching. We observed abrupt PLE absorption at GaN band edge energy and approximately 50-ps delayed risetime compared to GaN and AlGaN emissions, indicating effective carrier transfer from the GaN flatband and AlGaN regions to the heterointerface. Even though the 2DEG emission is a spatially-indirect (slow) recombination, a fast decay component of ∼0.2 ns is found to be dominant in 2DEG emission because of the fast exhaustion of photogenerated holes in GaN flatband region via spatially-direct (fast) GaN recombination. From the results, we explain the carrier generation, transfer, and recombination dynamics and the relationships between 2DEG, GaN, and Al0.4 Ga0.6 N emissions in undoped Al0.4 Ga0.6 N/GaN single heterostructures.
