Simple Summary: This study investigated how different fish species are distributed in the sea based on where they are relative to the oceanic current region and how deep the water is. Researchers collected fish samples over four seasons from May 2018 to March 2019 along the coasts of the East Sea in Korea. They used special commercial gill nets to catch the fish at different depths, ranging from shallow to deeper waters. Overall, they found 73 different fish species and collected over 6000 specimens. Depending on the oceanic current region, they found different fish species in each study site. For example, in one area called Ayajin, they mostly found fish like blackfin flounder (Glyptocephalus stelleri), Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) and mailclad sculpin (Icelus cataphractus). In another area called Hupo, different fish species were more common, such as blackfin flounder, Sohachi flounder (Cleisthenes pinetorum), and flathead flounder (Hippoglossoides dubius). The researchers also noticed that the types of fish varied depending on how deep the water was. This study helps us understand how fish populations change in different parts of the sea based on the oceanic current region and at different depths. This study assessed variations in demersal fish assemblages with respect to the study site and water depth. Seasonal samplings from May 2018 to March 2019 were conducted along the northern (Ayajin, Goseong) and southern (Hupo, Uljin) sites of the East Sea off the Korean coast, using commercial gill nets. Samples were collected at depths of ~50, ~80, ~150 m across the study sites, with concurrent monitoring of water column structures. A total of 73 species and 6250 specimens were collected. Distinctive fish species compositions were observed according to the study site and depth. Although Glyptocephalus stelleri was the most abundant fish species in both Ayajin and Hupo, Gadus macrocephalus, Icelus cataphractus, and Alcichthys elongatus were most predominant in Ayajin, whereas Cleisthenes pinetorum, Hippoglossoides dubius, and Gymnocanthus herzensteini were more prevalent in Hupo. In terms of depth layer, in Ayajin, G. stelleri dominated in both intermediate and deeper layers, with Hemilepidotus gilberti, A. elongatus, Enophrys diceraus common in shallower depths. Conversely, in Hupo, G. stelleri, C. pinetorum, and A. nadeshnyi dominated across all depth layers, whereas Dasycottus setiger and G. herzensteini dominated in deeper and shallower depths, respectively. Significant influences of the study site and water depth on fish assemblage structures were observed due to variations in water temperature at the seasonal thermocline boundary. The bilateral asymmetry was analysed on 259 fish specimens comprising six Barbus species collected in June-August 2010 from rivers in western Anatolia. The goals of this study are: (1) to check for the levels of bilateral asymmetry amid the ten morphological features of the six Barbus species and (2) to compare the levels of this asymmetry among the ten localities in western Anatolia. The possibility of applied investigations using bilateral asymmetry and fishes as an indicator of the health of the freshwater systems was also conducted. Statistical analyses have shown that the ten morphological traits chosen for this study exhibit variable levels of bilateral asymmetry in the six Barbus species collected from the ten localities studied. The asymmetry value was highest for snout length and lowest for the prepectoral fin length observed in B. pergamonensis. An increasing tendency in asymmetry levels was exhibited for each of the ten morphological traits in the fish length groups selected for each Barbus species assessed. The result of the individuals being right-handed or left-handed has shown that specific morphological characteristics are either dextral or sinistral or showed no bilateral asymmetry in different Barbus species studied. Deteriorated river water quality affects estuarine environments due to river and estuary linkages. Thus, river water quality improvement could play a pivotal role in the maintenance of estuarine ecosystem functions. The South Korean administration opened river weirs to restore river ecosystems and announced that this helped restore habitats and improve water quality. Despite these reported positive results in the rivers, little research has been conducted on the effects of weir opening on estuaries linking to rivers. We investigated the physicochemical properties of the Geum Estuary during the initial weir opening (2018) and stabilization (2021) periods. The results indicated that the NO3− inputs from rivers to estuaries decreased from 2018 to 2021 by 19~68%; however, the trends of [NO3−] in estuarine water columns in nearby estuary dams fluctuated between 2018 and 2021. No change in NO3− pollutant sources was observed from 2018 to 2021. Unlike [NO3−], [PO4−] and [SiO2] were higher in 2021; thus, large amounts of previously accumulated PO4− and SiO2 within the weirs might have been released from the river into the estuary. This supply of PO4− could enhance estuarine phytoplankton growth, where PO4− is a limiting factor for primary production due to excessive inputs of NO3− from rivers. Therefore, dredging the accumulated sediment within weirs should be considered prior to opening them to prevent the release of PO4− and SiO2 into estuaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One hundred and twenty asterisci were obtained from 30 specimens each of Cyprinion kais and Cyprinion macrostomum. Significant relationships between otolith mass and the three fish lengths (TL, SL, and FL) were attained for C. kais. Similar associations were obtained for OL and the three fish lengths of C. macrostomum. For C. kais, the highest in the relation between otolith mass, hereafter referred to as OM, and fish fork length, henceforth known as FL (0.5894). The lowest coefficient of determination was observed between otolith width, hereafter called OW, and standard fish length, hereafter referred to as SL (0.2861). For C. macrostomum, the highest coefficient of determination was attained for the relation between OL and FL (0.7280) and the lowest for the relationship between OM and TL (0.1717). The analysis shows that evaluations of the body size of the two fish species investigated through biometric studies of otoliths are trustworthy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discovering tropical marine species outside of their distribution limits is important for evaluating the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems. One specimen (31.6 mm standard length) of a tropical fish, Chromis weberi Fowler et Bean, 1928, representing the family Pomacentridae, was first recorded from Jeju Island, Korea, on 8 December 2021. It was characterized by black posterior margins of the preopercle and opercle and black upper and lower lobes of the caudal fin. A specimen of this species collected from Munseom was distinguished from Chromis xanthura (Bleeker, 1854) based on distinct differences in the tips of the upper and lower caudal fin lobes, which are not black in C. xanthura. In addition, C. weberi was easily distinguished from the other four species in the genus Chromis, by the mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequence (345 bp), with genetic distances ranging from 0.130 to 0.252. This study documents the first record of C. weberi in temperate Korean waters, implying a poleward range expansion for this species. The Korean name 'geom-eun-jeom-ggo-ri-ja-ri-dom' has been proposed for C. weberi. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
