Stochastic resetting has recently emerged as an efficient target-searching strategy in various physical and biological systems. The efficiency of this strategy depends on the type of environmental noise, whether it is thermal or telegraphic (active). While the impact of each noise type on a search process has been investigated separately, their combined effects have not been explored. In this work, we explore the effects of stochastic resetting on an active system, namely a self-propelled run-and-tumble particle immersed in a thermal bath. In particular, we assume that the position of the particle is reset at a fixed rate with or without reversing the direction of self-propelled velocity. Using standard renewal techniques, we compute the mean search time of this active particle to a fixed target and investigate the interplay between active and thermal fluctuations. We find that the active search can outperform the Brownian search when the magnitude and flipping rate of self-propelled velocity are large and the strength of environmental noise is small. Notably, we find that the presence of thermal noise in the environment helps reduce the mean first passage time of the run-and-tumble particle compared to the absence of thermal noise. As a fundamental thermodynamic principle, speed limits reveal the lower bound of entropy production (EP) required for a system to transition from a given initial state to a final state. While various speed limits have been developed for continuous-time Markov processes, their application to discrete-time Markov chains remains unexplored. In this study, we investigate the speed limits in discrete-time Markov chains, focusing on two types of EP commonly used to measure the irreversibility of a discrete-time process: time-reversed EP and time-backward EP. We find that time-reversed EP satisfies the speed limit for the continuous-time Markov processes, whereas time-backward EP does not. Additionally, for time-reversed EP, we derive practical speed limits applicable to systems driven by cyclic protocols or with unidirectional transitions, where conventional speed limits become meaningless or invalid. We show that these relations also hold for continuous-time Markov processes by taking the time-continuum limit of our results. Recent years have witnessed a surge of discoveries in the studies of thermodynamic inequalities: the thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR) and the entropic bound (EB) provide a lower bound on the entropy production (EP) in terms of nonequilibrium currents; the classical speed limit (CSL) expresses the lower bound on the EP using the geometry of probability distributions; the power-efficiency (PE) tradeoff dictates the maximum power achievable for a heat engine given the level of its thermal efficiency. In this study, we show that there exists a unified hierarchical structure encompassing all of these bounds, with the fundamental inequality given by a novel extension of the TUR (XTUR) that incorporates the most general range of current-like and state-dependent observables. By selecting more specific observables, the TUR and the EB follow from the XTUR, and the CSL and the PE tradeoff follow from the EB. Our derivations cover both Langevin and Markov jump systems, with the first proof of the EB for the Markov jump systems and a more generalized form of the CSL. The conventional Langevin equation offers a mathematically convenient framework for investigating open stochastic systems interacting with their environment or a bath. However, it is not suitable for a wide variety of systems whose dynamics rely on the nature of the environmental interaction, as the equation does not incorporate any specific information regarding that interaction. Here, we present a universal formulation of the stochastic differential equation (SDE) for an open system coupled to a thermostatic bath via an arbitrary interaction Hamiltonian. This SDE encodes the interaction information to a fictitious potential (mean force) and a position-dependent damping coefficient. Surprisingly, we find that the conventional Langevin equation can be recovered in the presence of arbitrary strong interactions given two conditions: translational invariance of the potential and disjoint separability of the bath particles. We study a way to set the natural frequency of a newly added oscillator in a growing network to enhance synchronization. Population growth is one of the typical features of many oscillator systems for which synchronization is required to perform their functions properly. Despite this significance, little has been known about synchronization in growing systems. We suggest effective growing schemes to enhance synchronization as the network grows under a predetermined rule. Specifically, we find that a method based on a link-wise order parameter outperforms that based on the conventional global order parameter. With simple solvable examples, we verify that the results coincide with intuitive expectations. The numerical results demonstrate that the approximate optimal values from the suggested method show a larger synchronization enhancement in comparison to other naive strategies. Entropy production (EP) is a key quantity in thermodynamics, and yet measuring EP has remained a challenging task. Here we introduce an EP estimator, called multidimensional entropic bound (MEB), utilizing an ensemble of trajectories without knowing the details of a given system. MEB is a unified method in the sense that it is applicable to both overdamped and underdamped Langevin dynamics, irrespective of the time dependence of the driving protocol. In addition, MEB is computationally efficient because optimization is unnecessary. We apply our developed estimator to three physical systems driven by time-dependent protocols pertaining to experiments using optical tweezers: a dragged Brownian particle, a pulling process of a harmonic chain, and an unfolding process of an RNA hairpin. Thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR) provides a stricter bound for entropy production (EP) than that of the thermodynamic second law. This stricter bound can be utilized to infer the EP and derive other trade-off relations. Though the validity of the TUR has been verified in various stochastic systems, its application to general Langevin dynamics has not been successful in a unified way, especially for underdamped Langevin dynamics, where odd parity variables in time-reversal operation such as velocity get involved. Previous TURs for underdamped Langevin dynamics is neither experimentally accessible nor reduced to the original form of the overdamped Langevin dynamics in the zero-mass limit. Here, we find an operationally accessible TUR for underdamped Langevin dynamics with an arbitrary time-dependent protocol. We show that the original TUR is a consequence of our underdamped TUR in the zero-mass limit. This indicates that the TUR formulation presented here can be regarded as the universal form of the TUR for general Langevin dynamics. In nonequilibrium systems, the relative fluctuation of a current has a universal trade-off relation with the entropy production, called the thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR). For systems with broken time reversal symmetry, its violation has been reported in specific models or in the linear response regime. Here, we derive a modified version of the TUR analytically in the overdamped limit for general Langevin dynamics with a magnetic Lorentz force causing time reversal broken. Remarkably, this modified version is simply given by the conventional TUR scaled by the ratio of the reduced effective temperature of the overdamped motion to the reservoir temperature, permitting a violation of the conventional TUR. Without the Lorentz force, this ratio becomes unity and the conventional TUR is restored. We verify our results both analytically and numerically in a specific solvable system., Comment: 15 pages

Study on a rectified current induced by active particles has received a great attention due to its possible application to a microscopic motor in biological environments. Insertion of an {\em asymmetric} passive object amid many active particles has been regarded as an essential ingredient for generating such a rectified motion. Here, we report that the reverse situation is also possible, where the motion of an active object can be rectified by its geometric asymmetry amid many passive particles. This may describe an unidirectional motion of polar biological agents with asymmetric shape. We also find a weak but less diffusive rectified motion in a {\em passive} mode without energy pump-in. Microorganisms such as bacteria are active matters which consume chemical energy and generate their unique run-and-tumble motion. A swarm of such microorganisms provide a nonequilibrium active environment whose noise characteristics are different from those of thermal equilibrium reservoirs. One important difference is a finite persistence time, which is considerably large compared to that of the equilibrium noise, that is, the active noise is colored. Here, we study a mesoscopic energy-harvesting device (engine) with active reservoirs harnessing this noise nature. For a simple linear model, we analytically show that the engine efficiency can surpass the conventional Carnot bound, thus the power-efficiency tradeoff constraint is released, and the efficiency at the maximum power can overcome the Curzon-Ahlborn efficiency. An engine producing a finite power at the ideal (Carnot) efficiency is a dream engine, which is not prohibited by the thermodynamic second law. Some years ago, a two-terminal heat engine with {\em asymmetric} Onsager coefficients in the linear response regime was suggested by Benenti, Saito, and Casati [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 106}, 230602 (2011)], as a prototypical system to make such a dream come true with non-divergent system parameter values. However, such a system has never been realized in spite of many trials. Here, we introduce an exactly solvable two-terminal Brownian heat engine with the asymmetric Onsager coefficients in the presence of a Lorenz (magnetic) force. Nevertheless, we show that the dream engine regime cannot be accessible even with the asymmetric Onsager coefficients, due to an instability keeping the engine from reaching its steady state. This is consistent with recent trade-off relations between the engine power and efficiency, where the (cyclic) steady-state condition is implicitly presumed. In finite-time quantum heat engines, some work is consumed to drive a working fluid accompanying coherence, which is called `friction'. To understand the role of friction in quantum thermodynamics, we present a couple of finite-time quantum Otto cycles with two different baths: Agarwal versus Lindbladian. We solve them exactly and compare the performance of the Agarwal engine with that of the Lindbladian engine. In particular, we find remarkable and counterintuitive results that the performance of the Agarwal engine due to friction can be much higher than that in the quasistatic limit with the Otto efficiency, and the power of the Lindbladian engine can be nonzero in the short-time limit. Based on additional numerical calculations of these outcomes, we discuss possible origins of such differences between two engines and reveal them. Recently, it has been shown that there is a trade-off relation between thermodynamic cost and current fluctuations, referred to as the thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR). The TUR has been derived for various processes, such as discrete-time Markov jump processes and overdamped Langevin dynamics. For underdamped dynamics, it has recently been reported that some modification is necessary for application of the TUR. In this study, we present a more generalized TUR, applicable to a system driven by a velocity-dependent force in the context of underdamped Langevin dynamics, by extending the theory of Vu and Hasegawa [preprint arXiv:1901.05715]. The second law of thermodynamics constrains that the efficiency of heat engines, classical or quantum, cannot be greater than the universal Carnot efficiency. We discover another bound for the efficiency of a quantum Otto heat engine consisting of a harmonic oscillator. Dynamics of the engine is governed by the Lindblad equation for the density matrix, which is mapped to the Fokker-Planck equation for the quasi-probability distribution. Applying stochastic thermodynamics to the Fokker-Planck equation system, we obtain the $\hbar$-dependent quantum mechanical bound for the efficiency. It turns out that the bound is tighter than the Carnot efficiency. The engine achieves the bound in the low temperature limit where quantum effects dominate. We investigate the phase transitions in a coupled system of Ising spins and a fluctuating network. Each spin interacts with $q$ neighbors through links of the rewiring network. The Ising spins and the network are in thermal contact with the heat baths at temperatures $T_S$ and $T_L$, respectively, so that the whole system is driven out of equilibrium for $T_S \neq T_L$. The model is a generalization of the $q$-neighbor Ising model, which corresponds to the limiting case of $T_L=\infty$. Despite the mean field nature of the interaction, the $q$-neighbor Ising model was shown to display a discontinuous phase transition for $q\geq 4$. Setting up the rate equations for the magnetization and the energy density, we obtain the phase diagram in the $T_S$-$T_L$ parameter space. The phase diagram consists of a ferromagnetic phase and a paramagnetic phase. The two phases are separated by a continuous phase transition belonging to the mean field universality class or by a discontinuous phase transition with an intervening coexistence phase. The equilibrium system with $T_S=T_L$ falls into the former case while the $q$-neighbor Ising model falls into the latter case. At the tricritical point, the system exhibits the mean field tricritical behavior. Our model demonstrates a possibility that a continuous phase transition turns into a discontinuous transition by a nonequilibrium driving.
