The ultrafast motion of oxygen vacancies in solids is crucial for various future applications, such as oxide electrolytes. Visualization and quantification can offer unforeseen opportunities to probe the collective dynamics of defects in crystalline solids, but little research has been conducted on oxygen vacancy electromigration using these approaches. Here, we visualize electric-field-induced creation and propagation of oxygen-vacancy-rich and -poor competing phases and their interface with optical contrast in Ca-substituted BiFeO3 that contains a high density of mobile oxygen vacancies. We quantitatively determined the drift velocity of collective migration to be on the order of 100 μm s−1 with an activation barrier of 0.79 eV, indicating a significantly large ionic mobility of 2 × 10−6 cm2 s−1 V−1 at a remarkably low temperature of 390 °C. In addition, visualization enables direct observation of fluidic behavior, such as the enhancement of conduction at channel edges, which results in U-shaped viscous propagation of the phase boundary and turbulence under a reverse electric field. All of these results provide new insights into the collective motion of defects.

Vacancy-ordered perovskite oxides are attracting attention due to their diverse functions such as resistive switching, electrocatalytic activity, oxygen diffusivity, and ferroelectricity. It is important to clarify the chemical lattice strains arising from compositional changes and the associated vacancy order–disorder phase transitions at the atomic scale. Here, we elucidate the intermediate process of a topotactic phase transition in Ca-doped bismuth ferrite films consisting of alternating stacks of oxygen perovskite layers and a brownmillerite-type oxygen vacancy layer. We use Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy to closely examine the evolution of local strains exerted on the constituent sub-layers by electrochemical oxidation. A negative Raman chemical shift is observed during oxidation, which is linearly correlated with the local negative chemical expansivity of the oxygen layer. It seemingly contradicts with the general trend that oxides undergo lattice contraction upon oxidation. Oxygen vacancies initially confined in the vacancy layers can be understood to diffuse into the oxygen layers during melting of the ordered structure. The top shell, Turbo sazae, occurs commonly in the shallow rocky subtidal area of Jeju Island off the south coast of Korea, and it is one of the most valuable gastropod resources supporting the local shellfish industry. T. sazae landings in Jeju have declined dramatically in recent years, although the factors involved in this decline are yet to be identified. Recent studies also have reported that T. sazae is expanding its distribution range to the east coast of Korea, possibly due to the increasing seawater temperature. In this study, we investigated the hemocyte responses of T. sazae to elevated seawater temperatures in order to gain a better understanding of its immunological response to higher water temperatures. In this experiment, we exposed top shells to a gradual increase in seawater temperature, ranging from 22 °C to 30 °C, over a span of 9 days. We employed flow cytometry to assess various cellular immune responses, including hemocyte viability, phagocytosis capacity, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in T. sazae. The results showed that top shells exposed to elevated seawater temperature exhibited a significant decrease in phagocytosis capacity and an increase in ROS production after 3 days of the experiment. These findings indicate that an elevated seawater temperature imposes a stressful condition on T. sazae, characterized by reduced phagocytosis capacity and increased oxidative stress. To improve aquaculture practices and husbandry of a variety of gastropods, including small conch species, it is necessary to study the physiological and endocrinological responses of nocturnal conches to light exposure. In this study, we investigated the effect of the light environment on Tegula rustica by exposing it to contrasting light conditions and observing histological changes in the retina and oxidative stress according to photoperiod and light wavelength. We confirmed that the pigment layer was significantly thicker in the group irradiated with light for 24 h (LL), but that its thickness did not differ significantly with light wavelength. Additionally, light wavelength changes did not cause a significant change in H2O2 concentration until 5 days after the change in the light environment. However, a significantly higher H2O2 concentration was observed in the LL test group on the eighth day compared with the other experimental groups. And a significantly higher total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed in the LL group on the third day compared with the other experimental groups. Our results indicate that the light environment affects the reaction of conches and that continuous light has a stronger effect on the thickness of the pigment layer than the light wavelength. In addition, continuous light irradiation induces excessive ROS and causes oxidative stress. These results can also be provided as basic data for husbandry when aquaculturing gastropods. Bulk LaMnO3 is an A-type antiferromagnetic material in which the Jahn–Teller (JT) planes each have a ferromagnetic arrangement, but are stacked in antiparallel. Here, we report the growth of epitaxial LaMnO3 films on (001)-oriented cubic KTaO3 substrates in such a way that the JT plane is parallel to the nonmagnetic substrate. We verify the presence of the JT distortion and confirm the orientation of the plane by symmetry analysis with angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy. The temperature evolution of the Raman spectra indicates that the B1g JT phonon softens below the magnetic transition temperature of ∼145 K, where ferro- or ferri-magnetism with magnetic easy axis along the out-of-plane direction is exhibited.
