Abstract

Recently neutral and charged black-hole solutions were found for static perfect fluid with the equation of state $p(r)=-\rho(r)/3$, for fluid only as well as for fluid in the presence of electric field. In those works, the stability of the black holes were studied in an analytic manner, which concluded that the black holes are unconditionally unstable. In this work, we focus particularly on the {\it numerical} study of the instability. For the black-hole solutions as well as the static solutions without horizons, we solve the perturbation equations numerically and find the unstable mode functions.

Abstract

Sarcopenia, the age-related decline in muscle mass and function, poses a significant health challenge as the global population ages. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a key factor in sarcopenia, as evidenced by the role of mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) in mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics, as well as mitophagy. Resistance exercise training (RET) is a well-established intervention for sarcopenia; however, its effects on the mitochondria in aging skeletal muscles remain unclear. This review aims to elucidate the relationship between mitochondrial dynamics and sarcopenia, with a specific focus on the implications of RET. Although aerobic exercise training (AET) has traditionally been viewed as more effective for mitochondrial enhancement, emerging evidence suggests that RET may also confer beneficial effects. Here, we highlight the potential of RET to modulate mtROS, drive mitochondrial biogenesis, optimize mitochondrial dynamics, and promote mitophagy in aging skeletal muscles. 25. A Local Counter-Regulatory Motif Modulates the Global Phase of Hormonal Oscillations

Abstract

Counter-regulatory elements maintain dynamic equilibrium ubiquitously in living systems. The most prominent example, which is critical to mammalian survival, is that of pancreatic {\alpha} and {\beta} cells producing glucagon and insulin for glucose homeostasis. These cells are not found in a single gland but are dispersed in multiple micro-organs known as the islets of Langerhans. Within an islet, these two reciprocal cell types interact with each other and with an additional cell type: the {\delta} cell. By testing all possible motifs governing the interactions of these three cell types, we found that a unique set of positive/negative intra-islet interactions between different islet cell types functions not only to reduce the superficially wasteful zero-sum action of glucagon and insulin but also to enhance/suppress the synchronization of hormone secretions between islets under high/normal glucose conditions. This anti-symmetric interaction motif confers effective controllability for network (de)synchronization.

26. Local complexity predicts global synchronization of hierarchically networked oscillators

Abstract

We study the global synchronization of hierarchically-organized Stuart-Landau oscillators, where each subsystem consists of three oscillators with activity-dependent couplings. We consider all possible coupling signs between the three oscillators, and find that they can generate different numbers of phase attractors depending on the network motif. Here, the subsystems are coupled through mean activities of total oscillators. Under weak inter-subsystem couplings, we demonstrate that the synchronization between subsystems is highly correlated with the number of attractors in uncoupled subsystems. Among the network motifs, perfect anti-symmetric ones are unique to generate both single and multiple attractors depending on the activities of oscillators. The flexible local complexity can make global synchronization controllable.

Abstract

We use a numerical code to consider the nonlinear processes arising when a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is irradiated by an exotic scalar field (modelled as a free massless scalar field with an opposite sign for its energy-momentum tensor). These processes are quite different from the processes arising in the case of the same black hole being irradiated by a pulse of a normal scalar field. In our case, we did not observe the creation of a spacelike strong singularity in the T-region of the space-time. We investigate the antifocusing effects in the gravity field of the exotic scalar field with the negative energy density and the evolution of the mass function. We demonstrate the process of vanishing of the black hole when it is irradiated by a strong pulse of an exotic scalar field., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures. Abstract

Activation of hypoxia‐inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) contributes to blood‐retinal barrier (BRB) breakdown and pathological neovascularization responsible for vision loss in ischemic retinal diseases. During disease progression, mitochondrial biology is altered to adapt to the ischemic environment created by initial vascular dysfunction, but the mitochondrial adaptive mechanisms, which ultimately contribute to the pathogenesis of ischemic retinopathy, remain incompletely understood. In the present study, it is identified that expression of mitochondrial chaperone tumor necrosis factor receptor‐associated protein 1 (TRAP1) is essential for BRB breakdown and pathologic retinal neovascularization in mouse models mimicking ischemic retinopathies. Genetic Trap1 ablation or treatment with small molecule TRAP1 inhibitors, such as mitoquinone (MitoQ) and SB‐U015, alleviate retinal pathologies via proteolytic HIF1α degradation, which is mediated by opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore and activation of calcium‐dependent protease calpain‐1. These findings suggest that TRAP1 can be a promising target for the development of new treatments against ischemic retinopathy, such as retinopathy of prematurity and proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Abstract

Lactate (LA), an endogenous metabolite produced from pyruvate, can accumulate in skeletal muscle in certain conditions including major diseases, as well as during intensive exercise. Using differentiated C2C12 myotubes, we evaluated the early (1-h) and delayed (24-h) effects of LA (8 mM) on mechanisms involved in myogenesis or muscle atrophy, including 5'-adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-mediated inhibition of protein synthesis through the mTOR/P70-S6K pathway, Akt-mediated inhibition of expression of the MAFbx atrophic factor by FOXO3a and expression of the myogenic transcription factors, MyoD, myogenin and myosin heavy chain. Although the early effects of LA overload were not significant on myogenic or atrophic mechanisms, LA treatment for 24 h significantly activated atrophic mechanisms but suppressed myogenesis in myotubes. In addition, LA overload for 24 h significantly suppressed the expression of Sirtuin 1 and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha. Consistent with LA-induced activation of atrophic mechanisms, the diameter of C2C12 myotubes treated with LA for 24 h, but not for 1 h, was significantly lower than in control myotubes. Thus, a sustained, but not a transient, LA overload could induce muscle atrophy through the regulation of AMPK- and Akt-mediated pathways, although further in vivo studies are needed to confirm this.

50. Adolescent obesity and short sleep duration as independent risk factors for hypertension: a population-based cohort study

Abstract

Prevalence of hypertension in adolescents has increased worldwide and is considered a risk factor for hypertension and cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Although obesity and sleep deficiency increase this risk, the combined effects of these factors on hypertension remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the combined effects of obesity and sleep duration on hypertension in adolescents. This study was conducted using data from the 2016 to 2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which included a study population of 1272 adolescents. The participants were categorized into four groups based on sleep duration and body mass index (BMI) percentiles: normal sleep and normal body mass group (reference; normal), only short sleep group (short sleep), only overweight/obesity group (overweight/obesity), and short sleep and overweight/obesity group (short sleep and overweight/obesity). Short sleep duration was defined as <8 h of average sleep duration, and overweight/obesity was defined as a BMI ≥ 85th percentile. Hypertension in adolescents was defined as a systolic blood pressure ≥130 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mmHg. The prevalence of hypertension was 9.2% among Korean adolescents. Short sleep duration with overweight/obesity were associated with a significantly increased risk of hypertension (odds ratio = 6.57; 95% confidence interval: 3.27–13.20) in adolescents, and controlling for the potential confounding variables only partially attenuated this relationship (odds ratio = 5.28; 95% confidence interval: 2.28–12.26). This study demonstrated that the coexistence of short sleep duration and obesity was associated with an increased risk of hypertension in Korean adolescents.
