This article seeks an alternative interpretation of the Garden of Eden story by reading it intertextually with a Korean origin myth, Dangun Shinhwa. Reflecting the animistic Korean indigenous culture, the myth portrays fluid boundaries between humans, animals, and gods, serving to undermine commonly anthropocentric and androcentric interpretations of the biblical story. Cued by animistic aspects of Dangun Shinhwa , the first part of the article rereads Genesis 2 through animism, leading to different interpretations of the characters—human and nonhuman beings and God—and the ontology of their world. Thus informed, the second part reads Gen 3 alongside Dangun Shinhwa , which features a bear who becomes a woman and later the mother of Korean people. The reading yields an alternative meaning to the familiar story about the human loss of connections and soul unawareness, foretelling the tragedy of today's carno-phallogocentric world. Poison frogs acquire chemical defenses from the environment for protection against potential predators. These defensive chemicals are lipophilic alkaloids that are sequestered by poison frogs from dietary arthropods and stored in skin glands. Despite decades of research focusing on identifying poison frog alkaloids, we know relatively little about how environmental variation and subsequent arthropod availability impacts alkaloid loads in poison frogs. We investigated how seasonal environmental variation influences poison frog chemical profiles through changes in the diet of the Climbing Mantella (Mantella laevigata). We collected M. laevigata females on the Nosy Mangabe island reserve in Madagascar during the wet and dry seasons and tested the hypothesis that seasonal differences in rainfall is associated with changes in diet composition and skin alkaloid profiles of M. laevigata. The arthropod diet of each frog was characterized into five groups (i.e. ants, termites, mites, insect larvae, or other) using visual identification and cytochrome oxidase 1 DNA barcoding. We found that frog diet differed between the wet and dry seasons, where frogs had a more diverse diet in the wet season and consumed a higher percentage of ants in the dry season. To determine if seasonality was associated with variation in frog defensive chemical composition, we used gas chromatography / mass spectrometry to quantify alkaloids from individual skin samples. Although the assortment of identified alkaloids was similar across seasons, we detected significant differences in the abundance of certain alkaloids, which we hypothesize reflects seasonal variation in the diet of M. laevigata. We suggest that these variations could originate from seasonal changes in either arthropod leaf litter composition or changes in frog behavioral patterns. Although additional studies are needed to understand the consequences of long-term environmental shifts, this work suggests that alkaloid profiles are relatively robust against short-term environmental perturbations.

Burn depth determination is critical for patient care but is currently lacking accuracy. Recent animal studies showed that Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) imaging can distinguish between superficial and deep burns. This is a first human study correlating reflectance of multiple SWIR bands using a SWIR assessment tool (SWAT) with burn depth classifications by surgeons and histology. Burns and adjacent normal skin in 11 patients with thermal injuries were imaged with visual and narrow bands centred at 1200, 1650, 1940 and 2250 nm and biopsies were taken from select areas. Reflectance intensities for each band in 273 regions of interest (ROI) were divided by the normal skin reflectance and combined into three Reflectance Indices (RIs). In addition, burns in ROIs and biopsies were classified by five surgeons and three pathologists, respectively, as superficial partial, deep partial, or full thickness. Results show that for burn depth increase classified by the surgeons, reflectance increased at 1200 and 2250, decreased at 1940, and didn't change at 1650 nm. In contrast, all three RIs increase with burn depth and predict the deep and full depths ROIs representing operable regions (Area Under Curve >0.6507, p < 0.0001). Pathologists' classification matched surgeons' classification of burn category only in eight of 21 biopsies (38.1%), but reflectance at all bands and one RI for all deep partial and full thickness biopsies were larger than in non‐biopsy normal and superficial partial thickness ROIs (p < 0.0118). Background: Moderate-severe traumatic brain injury (msTBI) stands as a prominent etiology of adult disability, with increased risk for cognitive impairment and dementia. Although some recovery often occurs within the first year postinjury, predicting long-term cognitive outcomes remains challenging, partly due to the significant pathophysiological heterogeneity of TBI, including acute cerebrovascular injury. The primary aim of our recently funded study, cerebral autoregulation, brain perfusion, and neurocognitive outcomes after traumatic brain injury (CAPCOG-TBI), is to determine if acute cerebrovascular dysfunction after msTBI measured using multimodal non-invasive neuromonitoring is associated with cognitive outcome at 1-year post-injury. Methods: This longitudinal observational study will be conducted at two Level 1 trauma centers in Texas, USA, and will include adult patients with msTBI, and/or mild TBI with neuroimaging abnormalities. Multimodal cerebral vascular assessment using transcranial Doppler and cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) will be conducted within 7-days of onset of TBI. Longitudinal outcomes, including cognitive/functional assessments (Glasgow Outcome Scale and Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System), cerebral vascular assessment, and imaging will be performed at follow-ups 3-, 6-, and 12-months post-injury. We aim to recruit 100 subjects with msTBI along with 30 orthopedic trauma controls (OTC). This study is funded by National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke (NINDS) and is registered on Clinicaltrial.org (NCT06480838). Expected results: We anticipate that msTBI patients will exhibit impaired cerebrovascular function in the acute phase compared to the OTC group. The severity of cerebrovascular dysfunction during this stage is expected to inversely correlate with cognitive and functional outcomes at 1-year postinjury. Additionally, recovery from cerebrovascular dysfunction is expected to be linked to cognitive recovery. Conclusion: The results of this study could help to understand the contribution of cerebrovascular dysfunction to cognitive outcomes after TBI and pave the way for innovative vascular-focused interventions aimed at enhancing cognitive recovery and mitigating neurodegeneration following msTB. Background: Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) is a high-risk, low-volume procedure requiring repetition, skill and multiple disciplines with fidelity of communication. Yet many barriers exist to maintain proficiency and skills with variable cost and fidelity. We designed and implemented a low-cost monthly ECMO simulation and hypothesized providers would have increased familiarity and improved teamwork. We also review some key elements of cost, fidelity and evaluation of effectiveness. Methods: A structured, 1-hour ECMO simulation was performed on a customized mannikin on a monthly basis in 2022. Qualitative surveys were administered to each member post-simulation. Answers were categorized by theme, including satisfaction of patient care, evaluation of self and team dynamics, and areas for improvement. Results: Most participants were satisfied with their ability to take care of the patient, with common themes of communication and coordination of roles. Identified areas of improvement were mostly limited to technical skills, and soft skills such as communication and teamwork. Conclusions: We designed and implemented a low-cost, monthly and multi-disciplinary ECMO simulation program with overall positive feedback and identified areas for improvement. There remains variability in cost, fidelity and evaluation of performance and retention. There may be a need to create guidelines for ECMO simulation training that can be applied at all institutions utilizing ECMO for patient care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to assess the self-efficacy of nursing faculty and students related to their potential use of mobile technology and to ask what implications this technology has for their teaching and learning in practice education contexts. We used a cross-sectional survey design involving students and faculty in two nursing education programs in a western Canadian college. In January, 2011, 121 faculty members and students completed the survey. Results showed a high level of ownership and use of mobile devices among our respondents. The median mobile self-efficacy score was 75 on a scale of 100, indicating that both faculty and students were highly confident in their use of mobile technologies and prepared to engage in mobile learning. This reflective case study was based on our independent use of the debate as an online instructional approach and our shared interest in teaching strategies. In an interdisciplinary manner, using narrative inquiry and action research, we melded our data sources and analyzed the findings, including our individual experiences with the technique. Our paper contributes to the field of research on faculty self-evaluations of teaching strategies, specifically debates. The topic will be of relevance to those who teach online. The findings suggest that examining faculty perceptions and views on the use of debates in text-based paced and un-paced courses at the online undergraduate and graduate levels can be a valuable undertaking. The process enabled us to benefit from our mutual reflective discussions on the use of debates to understand how each of us used the strategy. Despite our different approaches to the debate, we share many commonalities regarding debate as a teaching strategy.

We report here on an exploratory formative evaluation of a project to integrate mobile learning into a Western Canadian college nursing program. Third-year students used Hewlett Packard iPAQ mobile devices for five weeks in a practice education course in April-May, 2007. Koole's (2009) "Framework for the Rational Analysis of Mobile Education" (FRAME) model provided our definition of mobile learning and was used to organize our presentation of the results of the study. Participants reported positively on the usability of the mobile devices, finding them easy to learn, readily portable, and the screen size sufficient for mobile specific programs. However, they had difficulty with the wireless connectivity and, despite an initial orientation, did not have time to fully learn the devices in the context of a busy course. As a result, it is not clear if students can effectively use the social technology provided by such devices or if mobile learning can support interaction between instructors and learners in this context. The use of mobile devices in nursing practice education is feasible, but further investigation is needed on the use of m-learning for communication and interactive purposes. Why do nursing and health studies graduate students who are enrolled in online programs decide to withdraw? The qualitative study reported in this paper investigated students' self-identified reasons for withdrawing from an online graduate program in nursing and health studies. The focus of the study was Athabasca Universities' Centre for Nursing and Health Studies (CNHS) online graduate program. Data were collected from program students who initiated withdrawal between the years 1999-2004. Using Rovai's (2002) Composite Persistence Model as a framework for analysis, themes identified from withdrawing students' notice of withdrawal letters are discussed. The major reasons for leaving can be placed into two categories, personal reasons (often related to life or work commitments) and program reasons (usually related to learning style and fit with career). These findings, and the resulting analysis, have implications for online program design and delivery and student support programs. With a better understanding of student reasons for leaving a program of studies, it will be possible to explore which program elements might be altered to improve the experience of online learning.
