This study introduces a unique active matter system as an application of the pedestrian collision avoidance paradigm, that proposes dynamically adjusting the desired velocity. We present a fictitious human-zombie scenario set within a closed geometry, combining prey-predator behavior with a one-way contagion process that can transform prey into predators. The system demonstrates varied responses, in cases where agents have the same maximum speeds, a single zombie always catches a human, whereas two zombies never catch a single human. As the number of human agents increases, observables, such as the final fraction of zombie agents and total conversion times, exhibit a significant change in the system's behavior at intermediate density values. Most notably, there is evidence of a first-order phase transition when the mean population speed is analyzed as an order parameter.

In this study, we conducted experimental investigations into the fundamental diagram of vibration-driven vehicles (VDV) in a one-dimensional array. As these mechanical agents interact solely through collisions, their mean speed remains nearly constant at low and medium densities. However, there is a reduction of between 25% and 40% when the lineal density approaches the inverse of the contact distance. Remarkably, in this one-dimensional system, the outcome is significantly influenced by the order in which agents, sorted by their free speeds, are gradually introduced into the experiment. While a significant speed difference is observed at low and medium densities based on this ordering, both curves eventually converge to the same speed at maximum density. In the present work, we study how the number of simulated clients (occupancy) affects the social distance in an ideal supermarket. For this, we account for realistic typical dimensions and process time (picking products and checkout). From the simulated trajectories, we measure events of social distance less than 2 m and its duration. Between other observables, we define a social distance coefficient that informs how many events (of a given duration) suffer each agent in the system. Data-driven simulation of pedestrian dynamics is an incipient and promising approach for building reliable microscopic pedestrian models. We propose a methodology based on generalized regression neural networks, which does not have to deal with a huge number of free parameters as in the case of multilayer neural networks. Although the method is general, we focus on the one pedestrian-one obstacle problem. Experimental data were collected in a motion capture laboratory providing high-precision trajectories. The proposed model allows us to simulate the trajectory of a pedestrian avoiding an obstacle from any direction.

The "faster-is-slower" (FIS) effect was first predicted by computer simulations of the egress of pedestrians through a narrow exit [Helbing D, Farkas I J, Vicsek T, Nature 407:487-490 (2000)]. FIS refers to the finding that, under certain conditions, an excess of the individuals' vigor in the attempt to exit causes a decrease in the flow rate. In general, this effect is identified by the appearance of a minimum when plotting the total evacuation time of a crowd as a function of the pedestrian desired velocity. Here, we experimentally show that the FIS effect indeed occurs in three different systems of discrete particles flowing through a constriction: (a) humans evacuating a room, (b) a herd of sheep entering a barn and (c) grains flowing out a 2D hopper over a vibrated incline. This finding suggests that FIS is a universal phenomenon for active matter passing through a narrowing.

This paper examines different evacuation strategies for systems where several rooms evacuate trough the same means of egress, using microscopic pedestrian simulation.As a case study, a medium-rise office building is considered. It was found that the standard strategy, whereby the simultaneous evacuation of all levels is performed, can be improved by a sequential evacuation, beginning with the lowest floor and continuing successively with each one of the upper floors after a certain delay. The importance of the present research is that it provides the basis for the design and implementation of new evacuation strategies and alarm systems that could significantly improve the evacuation of multiple rooms trough a common means of escape., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

In this work we studied the trajectories, velocities and densities of ants when egressing under controlled levels of stress produced by a chemical repellent at different concentrations. We found that, unlike other animals escaping under life-and-death conditions and pedestrian simulations, ants do not produce a higher density zone near the exit door. Instead, ants are uniformly distributed over the available space allowing for efficient evacuations. Consequently, the faster-is-slower effect observed in ants (Soria et al., 2012) is clearly of a different nature to that predicted by de social force model. In the case of ants, the minimum evacuation time is correlated with the lower probability of taking backward steps. Thus, as biological model ants have important differences that make their use inadvisable for the design of human facilities.

We propose and document the evidence for an analogy between the dynamics of granular counter-flows in the presence of bottlenecks or restrictions and financial price formation processes. Using extensive simulations, we find that the counter-flows of simulated pedestrians through a door display many stylized facts observed in financial markets when the density around the door is compared with the logarithm of the price. The stylized properties are present already when the agents in the pedestrian model are assumed to display a zero-intelligent behavior. If agents are given decision-making capacity and adapt to partially follow the majority, periods of herding behavior may additionally occur. This generates the very slow decay of the autocorrelation of absolute return due to an intermittent dynamics. Our finding suggest that the stylized facts in the fluctuations of the financial prices result from a competition of two groups with opposite interests in the presence of a constraint funneling the flow of transactions to a narrow band of prices., Comment: To be submitted to PRE
