During the last several decades, numerous researchers have provided evidence that physical and biogeochemical processes at air-snow/ice-water interfaces are very complex, and, in many cases, interlinked.

In this work, we show that previously unknown mercury-containing nanoparticles exist in the air using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging (HR-STEM). Deploying an urban-air feld campaign near a mercury point source, we provide further evidence for mercury nanoparticles and determine the extent to which these particles contain two long suspected forms of oxidized mercury (mercuric bromide and mercuric chloride) using mercury mass spectrometry (Hg-MS). Using optical particle sizers, we also conclude that the conventional method of measuring gaseous oxidized mercury worldwide can trap up to 95% of nanoparticulate mercuric halides leading to erroneous measurements. Finally, we estimate airborne mercury aerosols may contribute to half of the oxidized mercury measured in wintertime Montréal urban air using Hg-MS. These emerging mercury-containing nanoparticle contaminants will infuence mercury deposition, speciation and other atmospheric and aquatic biogeochemical mercury processes including the bioavailability of oxidized mercury to biota and its transformation to neurotoxic organic mercury.

Sorption-based air purification is typically performed using inorganic sorbents such as activated carbon. Organic polymeric sorbents with a microporous or nanoporous structure could be a promising alternative. We investigated the effectiveness of four hyper-cross-linked polystyrenic sorbents against formaldehyde and compared it to the effectiveness of three activated-carbon-based preparations. One of the polystyrenic sorbents (MN270) was nanostructured, and it reduced formaldehyde concentration by over 95% (from 0.463 ± 0.037 mg/m³ to 0.020 ± 0.002 mg/m³) in short-duration tests. In the long-duration tests (500 min), MN270’s performance was comparable to that of the pure coconut shell activated carbon. MN270 was found to be nanostructured (10–200 nm pores), which was associated with its superior sorptive properties and the comparatively high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) result of 1370.49 ± 19.19 m²/g, which was higher than the best-performing activated carbon sorbent (941.76 ± 18.10 m²/g). The novel application of the hyper-cross-linked polystyrenic sorbents for air purification provides a feasible and potentially more sustainable alternative to inorganic sorbents, thanks to their recyclability and manufacturability from biomass.

Rapid urbanization, advancements in science and technology, and the increase in tech-savviness of consumers have led to an exponential production of a variety of electronic equipment. The global annual growth rate of e-waste volume exceeds the growth rate of the human population. Electronic waste has now become a point of concern globally (53.6 million metric tons, 2019). However, merely 17.4% of all global e-waste is properly collected and recycled. China is the largest contributor to the global production of e-waste (~19%), the second being the United States. Indeed, only 14 countries generated over 65% of global e-waste production in 2019. E-wastes contain a wide range of organic, and inorganic compounds including various metals. Emerging contaminants like plastics are amongst the fastest growing constituents of electronic waste. The current challenges include the lack of reliable data, inadequate identification and quantification of new emerging materials, limited effectiveness of current recycling technologies, need for cutting-edge detection and recycling technologies, and the lack of e-waste management policies and international collaboration. In this review, we strive to integrate the existing data on production rates at different spatial scales, composition, as well as health, economical, and environmental challenges, existing recycling technologies; explore tangible solutions; and encourage further sustainable technology and regulatory policies.

Black carbon (BC) plays an important role in climate and health sciences. Using the combination of a year real‐time BC observation (photoacoustic extinctiometer) and data for PM2.5 and selected co‐pollutants, we herein show that annual BC Mass concentration has a bi‐modal distribution, in a cold‐climate city of Montreal. In addition to the summer peak, a winter BC peak was observed (up to 0.433 μg/m3), lasting over 3 months. A comparative study between two air pollution hotspots, downtown and Montreal international airport indicated that airborne average BC Mass concentration in downtown was 0.344 μg/m3, whereas in the residential areas around Montreal airport BC Mass values were over 400% higher (1.487 μg/m3). During the numerous snowfall events, airborne BC Mass concentration decreased. High‐resolution scanning/transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analysis of the snow samples provided evidence that airborne BC particles or carbon nanomaterials were indeed transferred from polluted air to snow. During the COVID‐19 lockdown, the BC concentration and selected co‐pollutants, decreased up to 72%, confirming the predominance of anthropogenic activities in BC emission. This first cold‐climate BC data set can be essential for more accurate air quality and climate modeling. The phase of oxidized mercury is critical in the fate, transformation, and bioavailability of mercury species in Earth’s ecosystem. There is now evidence that what is measured as gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) is not only gaseous but also consists of airborne nanoparticles with distinct physicochemical properties. Herein, we present the development of the first method for the consistent and reproducible generation of oxidized mercury nano- and sub-micron particles (~ 5 to 400 nm). Oxidized mercury nanoparticles are generated using two methods, vapor-phase condensation and aqueous nebulization, for three proxies: mercury(II) bromide (HgBr2), mercury(II) chloride (HgCl2), and mercury(II) oxide (HgO). These aerosols are characterized using scanning mobility and optical sizing, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and nano/microparticle interface coupled to soft ionization mercury mass spectrometric techniques. Synthetic nanoparticle stability was studied in aqueous media, and using a microcosm at ambient tropospheric conditions of ~ 740 Torr pressure, room temperature, and at relative humidity of approximately 20%. Analysis of microcosm airborne nanoparticles confirmed that generated synthetic mercury nanoparticles retain their physical properties once in air. KCl-coated denuders, which are currently used globally to measure gaseous mercury compounds, were exposed to generated oxidized mercury nanoparticles. The degree of synthetic mercury nanoparticle capture by KCl-coated denuders and particulate filters was assessed. A significant portion of nanoparticulate and sub-micron particulate mercury was trapped on the KCl-coated denuder and measured as GOM. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of soft ionization mercury mass spectrometry to the measurement of mercury species present in the gaseous and solid phase. We recommend coupling of this technique with existing methodology for a more accurate representation of mercury biogeochemistry cycling.

Arctic snow has been shown to be a reactive interface for key physical, chemical, and microbiological processes, affecting the Arctic's oxidation, biodiversity, radiation, and climate. To explore the potential links between snow-borne metal contaminants and metal-interactive bacteria, to freezing/melting processes, we performed concurrent chemical characterization, genomic, and morphological analysis of five different Arctic snowpack (accumulated, blowing, fresh falling, surface hoar, and wind pack snow) and frost flower in Utqiaġvik (Barrow), Alaska, using Montreal urban snow as reference. Several complementary analytical techniques, including triple quad ICP-MS/MS along with various chromatography techniques, thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS), high-resolution transition electron microscopy with electron dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (HR-TEM/EDS), and next generation sequencing (NGS), were deployed. Distinct metal composition and bacterial distribution among samples were observed. The concentration of 27 different transition, post-transition, rare, and radioactive metals were determined in molten snow and frost flower, as well as filtered samples. The range of three highest detected metal concentrations among samples were: Hg (3.294–134.485 μg/L), Fe (0.719–34.469 μg/L), and Sr (1.676–19,297.000 μg/L). NGS analysis led to the identification of metal interacting bacteria in all types of snow and frost flowers in the Arctic (blowing snow (1239), surface hoar snow (2243), windpack (2431), frost flowers (1440)), and Montreal urban snow (5498)) with specific bacterial genera such as: Acinetobacter , Arcenicella , Azospirillum (surface hoar snow), Arthrobacter , Paenibacillus (blowing snow), and Cycloclasticus , OM182 clade (frost flower). Several types of bacteria with confirmed or associated ice nucleation activity were observed in different types of snow, and frost flower including Pseudomonas genera (e.g., Pseudomonas fluorescens ), Flavobacterium , Corynebacterium , and Pseudoxanthomonas . The implications of the above findings to snow-air interactions including nanoparticles, namely during melting and freezing cycles, and to probe the impact of various natural and anthropogenic activities are herein discussed.

The Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in Alberta, Canada, is an important source of atmospheric pollutants, such as aerosols, that have repercussions on both the climate and human health. We show that the mean freezing temperature of snow-borne particles from AOSR was elevated (−7.1 ± 1.8 °C), higher than mineral dust which freezes at ∼ −15 °C and is recognized as one of the most relevant ice nuclei globally. Ice nucleation of nanosized snow samples indicated an elevated freezing ability (−11.6 ± 2.0 °C), which was statistically much higher than snow-borne particles from downtown Montreal. AOSR snow had a higher concentration (∼2 orders of magnitude) of >100 nm particles than Montreal. Triple quadrupole ICP-(QQQ)-MS/MS analysis of AOSR and Montreal snow demonstrated that most concentrations of metals, including those identified as emerging nanoparticulate contaminants, were much more elevated in AOSR in contrast to Montreal: 34.1, 34.1, 16.6, 5.8, 0.3, 0.1, and 9.4 mg/m3 for Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Se, Cd, and Pb respectively, in AOSR and 1.3, 0.3, 2.0

Airborne particles, specifically nanoparticles, are identified health hazards and a key research domain in air pollution and climate change. We performed a systematic airport study to characterize real-time size and number density distribution, chemical composition and morphology of the aerosols (∼10 nm–10 μm) using complementary cutting-edge and novel techniques, namely optical aerosol analyzers, triple quad ICP-MS/MS and high-resolution STEM imaging. The total number density of aerosols, predominantly composed of nanoparticles, reached a maximum of 2 × 106 cm−3 and is higher than reported values from any other international airport. We also provide evidence for a wide range of metal in aerosols, and emerging metals in nanoparticles (e.g., Zn and Ni). The geometric mean, median and 99th and 1st percentile values of observed nanoparticle number densities at the apron were 1.0 × 105, 9.0 × 104, 1.2 × 106 and 9.3 × 103 cm−3, respectively. These observations were statistically higher than corresponding measurements in downtown Montreal and at major highways during rush hour. This airport is thus a hotspot for nanoparticles containing emerging contaminants. The diurnal trends in concentrations exhibit peaks during flight and rush hours, showing correlations with pollutants such as CO. The HR-TEM-EDS provided evidence for nano-sized particles produced in combustion engines. Implications of our results for air pollution and health are discussed.

Airports are identified hotspots for air pollution, notably for fine particles (PM2.5) that are pivotal in aerosol-cloud interaction processes of climate change and human health. We herein studied the field observation and statistical analysis of 10 years data of PM2.5 and selected emitted co-pollutants (CO, NOx, and O3), in the vicinity of three major Canadian airports, with moderate to cold climates. The decadal data analysis indicated that in colder climate airports, pollutants like PM2.5 and CO accumulate disproportionally to their emissions, in fall and winter, in comparison to airports in milder climates. Decadal daily averages and standard errors of PM2.5 concentrations were Vancouver: 5.31 ± 0.017, Toronto: 6.71 ± 0.199, and Montreal: 7.52 ± 0.023 μg/m3. The smallest and the coldest airport with least flights/passengers had the highest PM2.5 concentration. QQQ-ICP-MS/MS and HR-S/TEM analysis of snow near Montreal airport indicated a wide range of emerging contaminants (Cd, Mo, Co, As, Ni, Cr, and Pb) ranging from 0.90 to 622 μg/L, which were also observed in the atmosphere, hinting air-snow interactions. The concentration of selected emerging contaminants in snow near the Montreal airport were at pare with highly polluted snow samples like Alberta’s oil sands regions. The mean freezing temperature of snow close to the airport was -6.19 ± 0.06 °C, statistically higher than in downtown Montreal (-13.35 ± 0.06 °C) hinting to the importance of anthropogenic particles on snow microphysics. During the lockdown a pronounced decrease in the concentrations of PM 2.5 in residential areas close to airports was observed, conforming with the recommended workplace health thresh-holds (~ 2 × 104 cm-3), while before the lockdown condensed nano-sized particles were above the health limit. Targeted reduction of PM2.5 emission is recommended for cold-climate regions.

Ferrihydrite is ubiquitous in natural environments and is usually co-precipitated with impure ions and toxic contaminants like Al(III) and Sb(V) during the neutralization process of acid mine drainage. However, little is known about the dynamic interactions among ferrihydrite, Al(III) and Sb(V). In this study, the influence of coprecipitated Al(III) and Sb(V) on the transformation of ferrihydrite was investigated. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy before and after aging for 10 days at 70 °C. Results indicated that the Al(III) enhanced the immobilization of Sb(V) under neutral and alkaline conditions, and the presence of Sb(V) induced more production of extractable Al(III). XRD patterns revealed that the transformation rate of coprecipitated Al(III) and Sb(V) ferrihydrite was higher than Al-coprecipitated ferrihydrite. It is speculated that the presence of Sb(V) weakened the inhibition of Al(III) under experimental conditions. Competitive reaction of Al(III) and Sb(V) for substitution on the lattice Fe of ferrihydrite, likely decreased Al(III) substitution on ferrihydrite, and thus increased the observed transformation rate of ferrihydrite. These results have significant environmental implications for predicting the role of impurities and contaminants on ferrihydrite transformation processes.

Ice nucleation microphysical processes are identified to be of high importance in forecasting the magnitude of the Earth’s climate change. The environmental conditions often influence the ice nucleation processes in the Earth’s atmosphere. We herein study the impact of various environmental conditions on FeHg (maghemite–Hg2Cl2 composite), a highly efficient ice nucleating particle with similar freezing point to the best inorganic ice nuclei, AgI. FeHg is formed from FeCl2·4H2O and HgCl2, which are observed in the environment, in contrast to AgI, which is rarely found. The ice nucleation efficacy remained unchanged for FeHg under ambient conditions for a long duration. To mimic the atmosphere, we performed a series of experiments using a suite of complementary techniques, at various levels of radiation intensity, temperature, and pH for FeHg. To evaluate the role of atmospheric heterogeneous reactions on the ice nucleation ability of airborne dust particles, we investigated the systematic study of ice nucleation microphysics with a suite of atmospherically relevant metals (10), halides (4), and oxyhalides (2). Within a minute, a kaolin–iron oxide composite (KaFe) showed efficient reactions with aqueous mercury salts. Among the different mercury salts tested, only HgCl2 reacting with KaFe generated HgKaFe, a highly efficient ice nucleating particle (HEIN). When added to water, HgKaFe caused water to freeze at much warmer temperatures, within a narrow range of −6.6 to −4.7 °C. Using a suite of optical spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and microscopy techniques, we performed various experiments to decipher the physical and chemical properties of surface and bulk. KaFe was identified as a mixture of different iron oxides, namely, goethite, hematite, magnetite, and ε-Fe2O3, with kaolin. In HgKaFe, HgCl2 was reduced to Hg2Cl2 and iron was predominantly in maghemite form. Reduction of Fe2+ by NaBH4, followed by aerial oxidation, helped KaFe to be an exact precursor for the synthesis of HEIN HgKaFe. Kaolin served as a template for synthesizing iron oxide, opposing unwanted aggregation. No other metal or metal halide was found to have more efficient nucleating particles than HgCl2 with KaFe composite. The chelation of Hg(II) hindered the formation of HEIN. This study is useful for investigating the role of morphology and how inorganic chemical reactions on the surface of dust change morphology and thus ice nucleation activity. The understanding of the fundamentals of what makes a particle to be a good ice nucleating particle is valuable to further understand and predict the amount and types of atmospheric ice nucleating particles.

The redox transformations of arsenic (As) in lakes are thought to be mainly controlled by algal/microbial processes. We tested if photochemical oxidation could also be a significant redox process in northern freshwater systems. We exposed filtered natural water samples from four northern mine-impacted lakes (Northwest Territories, Canada) and three unimpacted ponds (Nunavik, Canada) to simulated solar radiation, and followed As(III) oxidation. During short-term incubation experiments (less than 8 h), all samples amended with As(III) displayed a rapid photooxidation (ca. 0.06-0.27 h−1) whereas no significant oxidation was observed in the dark. This photooxidation process was controlled by UV radiation, was influenced by short-lived oxidants and was partly driven by the concentrations of organic matter. Natural As complexes in unamended water samples were more rapidly photooxidized than in samples with As(III) amendments. Addition of goethite or simulation of snowmelt did not alter photooxidation rates significantly. Overall, these results imply that photooxidation of As should be considered as a potentially significant mechanism controlling inorganic As speciation in aquatic systems. This is particularly true for northern systems affected by mining activities and by changes of inputs of organic matter related to climate change.

Snowpacks in the Alberta Oil Sands Region (AOSR) of Canada contain elevated loadings of methylmercury (MeHg; a neurotoxin that biomagnifies through foodwebs) due to oil sands related activities. At sites ranging from 0 to 134 km from the major AOSR upgrading facilities, we examined sources of MeHg by quantifying potential rates of MeHg production in snowpacks and melted snow using mercury stable isotope tracer experiments, as well as quantifying concentrations of MeHg on particles in snowpacks (pMeHg). At four sites, methylation rate constants were low in snowpacks (km = 0.001–0.004 d–1) and nondetectable in melted snow, except at one site (km = 0.0007 d–1). Fossil fuel combustion and many industrial processes generate gaseous emissions that contain a number of toxic organic pollutants and carbon dioxide (CO2) which contribute to climate change and atmospheric pollution. There is a need for green and sustainable solutions to remove air pollutants, as opposed to conventional techniques which can be expensive, consume additional energy and generate further waste. We developed a novel integrated bioreactor combined with recyclable iron oxide nano/micro-particle adsorption interfaces, to remove CO2, and undesired organic air pollutants using natural particles, while generating oxygen. This semi-continuous bench-scale photo-bioreactor was shown to successfully clean up simulated emission streams of up to 45% CO2 with a conversion rate of approximately 4% CO2 per hour, generating a steady supply of oxygen (6mmol/hr), while nanoparticles effectively remove several undesired organic by-products. We also showed algal waste of the bioreactor can be used for mercury remediation. We estimated the potential CO2 emissions that could be captured from our new method for three industrial cases in which, coal, oil and natural gas were used. With a 30% carbon capture system, the reduction of CO2 was estimated to decrease by about 420,000, 320,000 and 240,000 metric tonnes, respectively for a typical 500MW power plant. The cost analysis we conducted showed potential to scale-up, and the entire system is recyclable and sustainable. We further discuss the implications of usage of this complete system, or as individual units, that could provide a hybrid option to existing industrial setups.

In this work, reverse micelle-based supramolecular solvent microextraction method coupled with supercritical fluid extraction and used for determining trace amounts of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in apple peels. The extract was analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with a fluorescence detector. Coupling supramolecular solvent microextraction with supercritical fluid extraction method, resolve low preconcentration factor of supercritical fluid extraction method, improved limit of detection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and allow the use of supramolecular solvent microextraction in solid matrices. The effective parameters on the supramolecular solvent microextraction and supercritical fluid extraction efficiency were optimized using one variable at a time and face centered design methods, respectively. Under the optimum condition, the limits of detection and limits of quantifications were in the range of 0.34-1.27 and 1.03-3.82 µg/kg, respectively. Analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in apple peels showed that the supercritical fluid extraction/ supramolecular solvent microextraction method provide great potential for trace analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in fruit samples (RSDs < 7.7%).

Mercury is an important global toxic contaminant of concern that causes cognitive and neuromuscular damage in humans. It is ubiquitous in the environment and can travel in the air, in water, or adsorb to soils, snow, ice and sediment. Two significant factors that influence the fate of atmospheric mercury, its introduction to aquatic and terrestrial environments, and its bioaccumulation and biomagnification in biotic systems are the chemical species or forms that mercury exists as (elemental, oxidized or organic) and its physical phase (solid, liquid/aqueous, or gaseous). Chemical dyes are used in a wide range of anthropogenic activities and are generally not biodegradable. Hence, sustainable recycling processes are needed to avoid their accumulation in the environment. A one-step synthesis of Fecore-maghemiteshell (Fe-MM) for facile, instantaneous, cost-effective, sustainable, and efficient removal of brilliant green (BG) dye from water has been reported here. The homogenous and monolayer type of adsorption is, to our knowledge, the most efficient, with a maximum uptake capacity of 1000 mg·g-1, for BG on Fe-MM. This adsorbent was shown to be efficient in occurring in time-scales of seconds and to be readily recyclable (ca. 91%). As iron/iron oxide possesses magnetic behavior, a strong magnet could be used to separate Fe-MM coated with BG. Thus, the recycling process required a minimum amount of energy. Capping Fe-MM by hydrophilic clay minerals further enhanced the BG uptake capacity, by reducing unwanted aggregation. Interestingly, capping the adsorbent by hydrophobic plastic (low-density polyethylene) had a completely inverse effect on clay minerals. BG removal using this method is found to be quite selective among the five common industrial dyes tested in this study. To shed light on the life cycle analysis of the composite in the environment, the influence of selected physicochemical factors (T, pH, hν, O3, and NO2) was examined, along with four types of water samples (melted snow, rain, river, and tap water). To evaluate the potential limitations of this technique, because of likely competitive reactions with metal ion contaminants in aquatic systems, additional experiments with 13 metal ions were performed. To decipher the adsorption mechanism, we deployed four reducing agents (NaBH4, hydrazine, LiAlH4, and polyphenols in green tea) and NaBH4, exclusively, favored the generation of an efficient adsorbent via aerial oxidation. The drift of electron density from electron-rich Fecore to maghemite shells was attributed to be responsible for the electrostatic adsorption of N+ in BG toward Fe-MM. This technology is deemed to be environmentally sustainable in environmental remediation, namely, in waste management protocol.

Discarded micro/nano-plastic inputs into the environment are emerging global concerns. Yet the quantification of micro/nanoplastics in complex environmental matrices is still a major challenge, notably for soluble ones. We herein develop in-laboratory built nanostructures (zinc oxide, titanium oxide and cobalt) coupled to mass spectrometry techniques, for picogram quantification of micro/nanoplastics in water and snow matrices, without sample pre-treatment. In parallel, an ultra-trace quantification method for micro/nanoplastics based on nanostructured laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (NALDI-TOF-MS) is developed. The detection limit is ∼5 pg for ambient snow. Soluble polyethylene glycol and insoluble polyethylene fragments were observed and quantified in fresh falling snow in Montreal, Canada. Complementary physicochemical studies of the snow matrices and reference plastics using laser-based particle sizers, inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry, and high-resolution scanning/transmission electron microscopy, produced consistent results with NALDI, and further provided information on morphology and composition of the micro/nano-plastic particles. This work is promising as it demonstrates that a wide range of recyclable nanostructures, in-laboratory built or commercial, can provide ultra-trace capability for quantification for both soluble polymers and insoluble plastics in air, water and soil. It may thereby produce key missing information to determine the fate of micro/nanoplastics in the environment, and their impacts on human health.

Despite the proposed importance of atmospheric mercury (Hg) cycling, little is known about its heterogeneous chemistry, specifically on ubiquitous dust particle surfaces in the environment. To address this gap in knowledge, we herein report the uptake coefficients for the uptake of Hg0(g) on iron (oxyhydr)oxides (γ-Fe2O3, α-FeOOH, α-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4) nanoparticles, employed as proxies for reactive components of mineral dust. Hg0(g)-particle interactions were studied in a batch set-up, at ambient pressure (760 ± 5 Torr) and temperatures (295 ± 2 K) with UV and visible irradiation (290 nm ≤ λ ≤ 700 nm). γ-Fe2O3, α-FeOOH and α-Fe2O3 demonstrated a ca. 40–900-fold increase in uptake kinetics upon irradiation, under our experimental conditions. In contrast, uptake kinetics on Fe3O4's surface displayed little dependence on irradiation. Relative humidity was shown to inhibit the effect of radiation on the uptake of Hg0(g) by α-Fe2O3. Size distributions, electronic properties, surface area and phase characterization of the iron(oxyhydr)oxide particles were studied to explain the uptake kinetics, and to provide insights into the mechanism of Hg0(g) loss. The adsorption capacity of Hg0(g) on α-Fe2O3 was determined from the adsorption isotherm fitted with Langmuir, Freundlich and Elovich adsorption models. The implications of the results to atmospheric chemical processes are herein discussed.

The widespread use of energy efficient mercury containing lamps and impending regulations on the control of mercury emissions has necessitated the development of green mercury control technologies such as nanosorbent capture and electrolysis regeneration. Herein we describe a two-step green technique to remove and recycle mercury from spent compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). The first element included the assessment of capture efficiencies of mercury vapor on magnetite (Fe3O4) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3), naturally abundant and ubiquitous components of atmospheric dust particles. Around 60 μg of mercury vapor can be removed up to 90% by 1.0 g of magnetite nanoparticles, within a time scale of minutes. The second step included the development of an electrochemical system for the mercury recycling and regeneration of used nanoparticles. Atmospheric aerosols are of significant importance in climate change and health research. This study provides a 2-years meta dataset of real-time aerosol number and size distribution measurements in a model cold-climate city of Montreal (Canada). We provide selected information on the chemical composition and morphology of aerosols (~10 nm to 10 μm). We deployed a suite of complementary techniques such as aerosol particle sizers, MOUDI, S/TEM imaging, EDS, QQQ-ICP-MS/MS, IC, and TOC analyzers. The highest geomean nanoparticles ( 1 μm). S/TEM-EDS confirmed the abundance of nanoparticles, single and clusters, with multifaceted morphologies and compositions. We identified (a) emerging nanoparticles, (b) secondary organic aerosols, (c) bioaerosols, and (d) combustion particles. Diurnal, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and yearly variations of aerosols are provided. We herein discuss the implications of these results on air quality and climate modelling.

In this study a novel sustainable method based on supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method was developed for simultaneous extraction and fractionation of petroleum biomarkers. We herein proposed a two-step supercritical fluid extraction method for crude oil and tar ball to separate the petroleum biomarkers into aliphatic and aromatic fractions. In the first step, pure scCO2 was used, while scCO2 modified was used as a solvent in the subsequent step. CO2 SFE can serve as an environmental-friendly alternative to common column chromatography method for petroleum biomarker or compositional analysis by GC–MS. The extraction process was shown to be selective, according to the polarity of the solvent, providing fractionation of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Yet the total extraction procedure in SFE was significantly faster than column chromatography methods (~80 min vs. 8 h). We will discuss the implications of this SFE method as a novel sustainable alternative to the existing extraction techniques.

We herein present a novel and sustainable technology for mercury recycling, with the maximum observed uptake capacity. Facile synthesis of the most efficient (~1.9 gg−1) nano-trap, made of montmorillonite-Fe-iron oxides, was performed to instantaneously remove mercury(II) ions from water. Elemental Hg was recovered from the adduct, by employing Fe granules, at ambient conditions. Varied pHs and elevated temperatures further enhanced this already highly efficient recycling process. The reduction of Hg(II) to Hg(I) by the nano trap and Hg(I) to Hg(0) by Fe granules are the main driving forces behind the recycling process. We undertook an extensive study of population and type of viable microorganisms at several indoor construction sites in a 50-year-old chemical building which housed both laboratory and office spaces. Results were compared to neighbouring public buildings (office and shopping malls), as well as outdoor (green areas and traffic zones) in downtown Montreal, (45 °30′N, 73 °35′W). The highest number of microorganisms was observed in the major shopping street (bacteria: 602,865 cfu/m3; fungi: 109,612 cfu/m3). During moving/construction process, the mean population of airborne bacteria and fungi were 89,281 and 50,386 cfu/m3, respectively. Mean bacterial and fungal population in demolished laboratory sites were 37,127 and 17,679 cfu/m3, respectively. After the termination of laboratory renovations, continued elevation of airborne taxa population (bacteria: 25,635 cfu/m3; fungi: 6188 cfu/m3) was observed. At the construction site, the 16S rDNA sequence of bacteria isolates, R. equi, was identified as human pathogen and R. jostii RHA1 in an organic demolished laboratory site, with the ability to degrade a variety of xenobiotic compounds such as polychlorinated biphenyls. Our study showed that renovation/construction activities could create a distinct large pool of microorganisms that could be released into indoor environments which may persist even after the completion of renovations. Potential health effects and suggestions for future research are discussed in this paper.

We herein used Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) as an adsorption interface for the concurrent removal of gaseous benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and m-xylene (BTEX) and sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), at different relative humidities (RH). X-ray diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and transmission electron microscopy were deployed for nanoparticle surface characterization. Mono-dispersed Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 2 O 3 ·FeO) NPs synthesized with oleic acid (OA) as surfactant, and uncoated poly-dispersed Fe 3 O 4 NPs demonstrated comparable removal efficiencies. Adsorption experiments of BTEX on NPs were measured using gas chromatography equipped with flame ionization detection, which indicated high removal efficiencies (up to (95 ± 2)%) under dry conditions. The humidity effect and competitive adsorption were investigated using toluene as a model compound. It was observed that the removal efficiencies decreased as a function of the increase in RH, yet, under our experimental conditions, we observed (40 ± 4)% toluene removal at supersaturation for Fe 3 O 4 NPs, and toluene removal of (83 ± 4)% to (59 ± 6)%, for OA-Fe 3 O 4 NPs. In the presence of SO 2 , the toluene uptake was reduced under dry conditions to (89 ± 2)% and (75 ± 1)% for the uncoated and coated NPs, respectively, depicting competitive adsorption. At RH > 100%, competitive adsorption reduced the removal efficiency to (27 ± 1)% for uncoated NPs whereas OA-Fe 3 O 4 NPs exhibited moderate efficiency loss of (55 ± 2)% at supersaturation. Results point to heterogeneous water coverage on the NP surface. The magnetic property of magnetite facilitated the recovery of both types of NPs, without the loss in efficiency when recycled and reused.

Measurement of oxidized mercury, Hg(II), in the atmosphere poses a significant analytical challenge as Hg(II) is present at ultra-trace concentrations (picograms per cubic meter air). Current technologies are sufficiently sensitive to measure the total Hg present as Hg(II) but cannot determine the chemical speciation of Hg(II). We detail here the development of a soft ionization mass spectrometric technique coupled with preconcentration onto nano- or microparticle-based traps prior to analysis for the measurement of mercury halides in air. The current methodology has comparable detection limits (4-11 pg m(-3)) to previously developed techniques for the measurement of total inorganic mercury in air while allowing for the identification of HgX2 in collected samples. Both mercury chloride and mercury bromide have been sporadically detected in Montreal urban and indoor air using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-mass spectrometry (APCI-MS). We discuss limitations and advantages of the current technique and discuss potential avenues for future research including quantitative trace measurements of a larger range of mercury compounds.

Using the newly developed Middle East Dust Index (MEDI) applied to MODIS satellite data, we consider a relationship between the recent desertified regions, over the past three decades, and the dust source points identified during the period of 2001–2012. Results indicate that major source points are located in Iraq and Syria, and by implementing the spectral mixture analysis on the Landsat TM images (1984 and 2012), a novel desertification map was extracted. Results of this study indicate for the first time that c.a., 39% of all detected source points are located in this newly anthropogenically desertified area. Using extracted indices for Deep Blue algorithm, dust sources were classified into three levels of intensity: low, medium, and high. A large number of low frequency sources are located within or close to the newly desertified areas. These severely desertified regions require immediate concern at a global scale.

Long-range atmospheric transport and deposition are important sources of mercury (Hg) to Arctic aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We review here recent progress made in the study of the transport, transformation, deposition and reemission of atmospheric Hg in the Canadian Arctic, focusing on field measurements (see Dastoor et al., this issue for a review of modeling studies on the same topics). Redox processes control the speciation of atmospheric Hg, and thus impart an important influence on Hg deposition, particularly during atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs). Bromine radicals were identified as the primary oxidant of atmospheric Hg during AMDEs. Since the start of monitoring at Alert (NU) in 1995, the timing of peak AMDE occurrence has shifted to earlier times in the spring (from May to April) in recent years, and while AMDE frequency and GEM concentrations are correlated with local meteorological conditions, the reasons for this timing-shift are not understood. Mercury is subject to various post-depositional processes in snowpacks and a large portion of deposited oxidized Hg can be reemitted following photoreduction; how much Hg is deposited and reemitted depends on geographical location, meteorological, vegetative and sea-ice conditions, as well as snow chemistry. Halide anions in the snow can stabilize Hg, therefore it is expected that a smaller fraction of deposited Hg will be reemitted from coastal snowpacks. Atmospheric gaseous Hg concentrations have decreased in some parts of the Arctic (e.g., Alert) from 2000 to 2009 but at a rate that was less than that at lower latitudes. Despite numerous recent advances, a number of knowledge gaps remain, including uncertainties in the identification of oxidized Hg species in the air (and how this relates to dry vs. wet deposition), physical–chemical processes in air, snow and water—especially over sea ice—and the relationship between these processes and climate change.

Understanding the adsorption process of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on various surfaces is essential in the realms of atmospheric, environmental and pollution remediation science. In this study, we investigated the adsorption of selected VOCs (benzene and toluene) on an ideally homogeneous liquid mercury (Hg(l)) surface using a surface sensitive nonlinear spectroscopic method of second harmonic generation (SHG). Both of the species investigated showed evidence of reversible physisorption. Determination of SHG adsorption isotherms revealed that attractive adsorbate–adsorbate lateral interaction plays a role in the adsorption of aromatic compounds from the gas phase. Benzene and toluene adsorption has been described by the Hill-de-Boer (HdB) adsorption isotherm model with the corresponding HdB interaction parameters, 2α/β, of 2.6 ± 0.2 and 3.3 ± 0.2 kcal mol−1, respectively. Our results highlight the importance of lateral interactions between adsorbed aromatic species at the gas/liquid interfaces. The investigation extends the applicability of SHG to probe complex adsorption processes under ambient conditions.
