1. Importance of Educational Intervention and Parental Knowledge on Atopic Dermatitis in Children

Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing, inflammatory skin disease. Failure to treat AD successfully can often be directly linked to poor treatment adherence as a result of the lack of information about the disease and basic principles of treatment. Several studies have found that making patients active participants in their care through information and education is a successful treatment strategy in AD. The aim of this study was to evaluate parental knowledge on AD and to stress the importance of therapeutic educational program in long term management and control of the disease. We carried out a short questionnaire-based study among 238 parents of children with AD regarding their knowledge on the etiology and treatment of AD. Our results showed that 21% of the participants reported corticophobia and were concerned about systemic absorption affecting the child’s growth and development even after short application. In children with AD who have food hypersensitivity, 14% of parents thought that a small amount of food allergen could be beneficial in achieving tolerability. The role of interdisciplinary educational program is to explain the epidemiology and pathogenesis of AD, as well as concomitant atopy related diseases and to teach parents about the importance of appropriate skin care.

2. Effectiveness of an educational program to reduce parenting stress and improve coping mechanism among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder in Jordan

Abstract

Parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are prompt to frustration and anxiety due to different stressors and demands over time. This needs to be prioritized in healthcare strategies to maintain the health well-being of parents and to enhance their ability to cope with stress. The general objective of this study was to develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of the educational program on the parenting stress (including parental distress, parent-child dysfunctional interaction and difficulty of the child) and the coping mechanism (including problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping) among parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Amman, Jordan. A single-blinded, cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted to compare the intervention group versus an active control group. A total of 211 eligible parents were included in this study. Chi-square test and Fisherʼs exact test (for categorical data) and independent t-test (for continuous data) were used to assess equivalence between the intervention and control groups at the baseline. Repeated Measures MANOVA was conducted on the parenting stress and the coping mechanism. The mean age of participants was 35.8 years (SD = 4.6), 48.3 % were fathers; while 51.7 % were mothers and they were Muslims (100%). The majority of them were married (97.2 %), employed (71.6 %) with Bachelor's education (44.5%). There were no significant differences in the socio-demographic (p-value < .05) and dependent variables between the intervention and control groups before the intervention (p-value < .05). There were significant main effects for the group (p = .038, p = .002, p < .001), time (p < .001, p < .001, p < .001) and group by time interaction (p <.001, p < .001, p <.001) for the parent distress, the difficult child and problem-focused coping respectively. The analysis indicated a significant effect of time on the parent-child dysfunctional interaction and emotion-focused coping (p < .00, p < .001

Abstract

Dojenačke su kolike od davnina poznate i jedan su od najčešćih razloga posjeta liječniku u ranoj dojenačkoj dobi. Ipak, uzrok njihova pojavljivanja i njihova patogeneza i danas su nepoznanica. Dijagnoza dojenačkih kolika postavlja se podrobnom anamnezom i kliničkim statusom. Posebnu pozornost valja obratiti na znakove i simptome upozorenja koji bi mogli upućivati na neku drugu tešku bolest. Ako anamneza i klinički pregled ne otkriju druge abnormalnosti osim neutješnog plača, daljnji dijagnostički postupci nisu potrebni. Postoji opsežan spektar predloženih terapijskih mjera, ali sve one imaju uglavnom vrlo malenu znanstveno dokazanu terapijsku učinkovitost. Stoga je cilj ovog rada bio pregledno prikazati znanstvene dokaze za različite oblike liječenja te, naposljetku, predložiti terapijski algoritam za dojenačke kolike., Infantile colic have been known for the long time and are one of the most common reasons for pediatrician’s appointment in early infancy. However, their etiology and pathogenesis are yet to be determined. Diagnosis is based on thorough medical history and physical examination. Special attention should be given to red flags or warning signs which could indicate a presence of serious illness. If no other abnormality is present, except inconsolable crying, there is no need for further diagnostic procedures. There is an extensive range of proposed therapeutic measures; however scientific evidence for all of them is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this review article is to present currently available evidence for the management of infantile colic and to provide a possible therapeutic algorithm.
