Background: Father involvement, defined in terms of both the quantity and quality of ways in which fathers may be involved, affects the child's development. How specifically father involvement links to emotion regulation during early childhood (0-5 years) is, however, less clear., Methods: This literature review synthesizes research on the links between father involvement and emotion regulation during early childhood, as well as the measurement methods used to assess them. Objectives: This study explores the combinations of conditional variables contributing to depressive symptoms in rural children., Methods: We analyzed data from 715 children from a rural mental health database, conducting detailed follow-up investigations on 129 children in Zhejiang and Henan provinces. We used fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) and regression analysis to identify causal pathways leading to depression., Results: The results indicate that depression in rural children does not stem from a single, necessary condition but arises from multiple factors. Our findings highlight significant contributions from both maternal and paternal involvement. Specifically, maternal involvement, combined synergistically with peer support and problematic behaviors, as well as paternal involvement, together with peer support and anxiety, significantly affects depressive outcomes. Additionally, anxiety and strong peer relationships independently have a substantial impact on these outcomes. Effective mitigation strategies involve active parental engagement and robust peer support, reducing the influence of risk factors such as problematic behaviors and anxiety., Limitations: The generalizability of the results is limited by cultural and geographical variations. Parenting styles encompass negative and positive approaches, potentially affecting adolescents' brain reward and emotion regulation systems. However, the association between parenting style and brain networks remains unknown. This study investigates the link between parenting style and functional connectivity (FC) within the reward and emotion regulation brain networks, using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). A total of forty-two middle-aged adolescents (26 males; 16 females) with no neurological or psychiatric symptoms participated in this study. We assessed parenting behaviors and extracted reward/emotion regulation FC from rs-fMRI. We examined the association between FC and parenting style, identified through principal component analysis. Correlation analysis investigated these links while controlling for sex. We delineated both positive (love-autonomy) and negative (hostility-control) parenting styles, accounting for 79 % of the explained variance in parenting behaviors. The negative parenting style displayed connections with FC within the reward system, particularly in the left nucleus accumbens (NAc), showcasing links to multiple frontal regions. Furthermore, it correlated with the social reward network, specifically the insula-NAc FC in bilateral hemispheres. Conversely, the positive parenting style exhibited an association with FC between the hippocampus and right lateral prefrontal cortex. Our findings support negative parenting's association with an immature reward system and suggest positive parenting's potential to enhance emotion regulation in brain function. These observations highlight two distinct parenting styles, including single-parenting behaviors. Background: The literature on the trajectories of NSSI behavior during the pandemic is scarce and mainly short-term. Furthermore, studies have not explored the buffering mechanisms that may have altered risk trajectories during this vulnerable period. This study aims to analyze the univariate change of NSSI during adolescence and to examine the alteration of the univariate growth due to the time-varying effect of COVID-19-related stress, parenting dimensions (i.e., positive and negative parenting), and their interaction., Methods: Participants included 830 Italian adolescents (44.2 % females; M age  = 14.52; SD = 0.80), who participated in at least one time point of data collection, from a three-wave longitudinal study (T1: from December 2019 to January 2020; T2: December 2020; T3: December 2021)., Results: The Latent Growth Curve Analyses show a linear increase in NSSI over time. In regards to time-varying, at T1, the results highlight that higher levels of negative parenting are associated with higher levels of NSSI at the same time point. Instead, at T2, results show that pandemic stress is associated with higher levels of NSSI at T2. Background: Pregnant and parenting youth in Canada face multiple challenges in fulfilling their parenting responsibilities while meeting their own unique needs. The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated public health restrictions exacerbated their challenges by reducing access to support networks, limiting opportunities to promote growth and well-being, and destabilizing their financial and economic standing. The impacts of the pandemic on the mental, physical, and emotional health of individuals are well-documented in the literature. However, there is limited research on how the pandemic influenced the lives, health, and well-being of pregnant and parenting youth and their children in Canada. Therefore, we aimed to examine the wider impacts (social and structural determinants that directly or indirectly impact health and well-being) of the pandemic and its implications for this population., Methods: We used a constructivist grounded theory approach to explore the experiences of pregnant and parenting youth during the pandemic and how certain social determinants of health intersected to shape health outcomes and influence their ability to access services. We conducted qualitative interviews using a semi-structured interview guide over Zoom. Using grounded theory principles, we inductively analyzed the data and categorized our findings into themes., Results: We recruited a total of 50 participants from different regions in Canada. The findings from the interviews were categorized into the following themes: (1) "They bear the burden alone": Struggles of pregnant and parenting youth, (2) "How will I live the next day?": Concerns and consequences arising from the pandemic, and (3) "Try to keep your mask on": Navigating healthcare services while maintaining public health guidelines. Our findings highlight the various challenges encountered by the youth during the pandemic, particularly those associated with financial and economic constraints, lack of accessible health and social services, and increased stress from parenting responsibilities., Conclusion: Pregnant and parenting youth in Canada encountered various barriers while accessing health and social services, maintaining their well-being, and connecting with reliable sources of support during the pandemic. Background: This study aims to validate a hypothesized model of the relationships between optimism, resilience, coping, parenting stress, perceived social support, and anxiety, as well as their influencing factors and consequences among caregivers of children diagnosed with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P)., Methods: A hypothesized model was proposed based on diathesis-stress theoretical model and existing literature. A convenience sample of two CL/P treatment centers in China was collected between April 2019 and July 2020. Various well-validated instruments were used to collect 248 valid data points. Descriptive statistics and correlations were computed to assess model fitness and path analysis was performed to investigate direct and indirect effects., Results: The results revealed that the average level of anxiety among caregivers of children suffering from CL/P was 3.00 (0.00,6.00). The fitness of the modified path model was evaluated using various measures, including χ2/df = 1.806, GFI = 0.989, RFI = 0.916, IFI = 0.990, CFI = 0.989, TLI = 0.960, RMSEA = 0.0570. Parenting stress had the greatest direct associated with anxiety, followed by perceived social support. Moreover, indirect relations to anxiety were observed for optimism, resilience, and coping, which were mediated through perceived social support and parenting stress., Conclusion: In summary, this work suggests that both parenting stress and perceived social support in caregivers of children suffering from CL/P are associated with anxiety. Background: Left-behind children(LBC) in rural China are at increased risk for mental health problems, including depression. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of depression and identify key associate factors among Chinese rural LBC., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from 36,612 LBC aged 6 to 18 years old across 596 data collection sites in Nanchong, Sichuan Province, China. Participants completed questionnaires assessing individual factors, family parenting situation, living events, and health-related data. Depression was measured using the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D). T-tests, chi-square, and logistic regression were performed to identify factors associated with depression., Results: The overall prevalence of depression among LBC was 6.75%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that family parenting situations, such as being from blended families (OR = 1.45) or being cared for by other family members (OR = 1.64), and dissatisfaction with the parenting situation (OR = 1.57) were significantly associated with higher odds of depression. Living events, including being misunderstood (OR = 1.82) and having disputes (OR = 1.48), and health-related factors, such as chronic diseases and regular medication use (OR = 2.38), also increased the risk of depression., Conclusions: This study highlights the high prevalence of depression among Chinese rural LBC and identifies key associate factors, including family parenting situation, negative living events and health-related factors. Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the global incidence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been increasing year by year, especially among adolescents, and it is highly correlated with the level of anxiety among teenagers, particularly within Chinese cultural contexts where parenting styles significantly influence adolescent behavior., Objective: This study examines the role of culturally-influenced parenting styles and adolescent coping strategies in relation to anxiety and NSSI behavior, aiming to clarify these multivariate interactions for better understanding and intervention., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with NSSI-diagnosed adolescents from Affiliated Kangning Hospital, Ningbo, China, and healthy adolescents from urban schools. Data on background, parenting styles, coping strategies, and anxiety levels were analyzed using chi-square tests, independent sample t -tests, MANOVA, and regression analysis., Results: Adolescents with NSSI reported higher anxiety levels, more punishment and interference, and less emotional warmth from their fathers compared to the non-NSSI group ( p  < 0.001). The NSSI group also relied more on emotion-oriented coping strategies, while the non-NSSI group favored problem-oriented approaches ( p  < 0.001). Multivariate analyses confirmed significant effects of NSSI behavior, parenting styles, and coping strategies on anxiety levels., Conclusion: This study found that the anxiety levels of NSSI adolescents were significantly higher than those of non-NSSI adolescents in China, which was closely related to less emotional warmth from parents, more punishment and interference, and emotion-focused coping strategies. Background: Child maltreatment is a global issue in need of intervention. This study investigated whether SafeCare, an evidence-based behavioral parenting program to prevent child neglect and physical violence, is desired and feasible to implement in Haiti birthing centers., Methods: A total of four focus groups were conducted with 29 birthing center staff and mothers in two birthing centers in Haiti. Staff participants also completed the World Health Organization Readiness Assessment for the Prevention of Child Maltreatment written survey., Results: Focus group findings suggest that SafeCare is a desired program by both caregivers attending the birth center and birth center staff. Findings also showed that the SafeCare curriculum needs cultural adaptations before delivery in Haitian birth centers. We also found that despite contextual challenges that pregnant mothers and birth center staff face in Haiti, birth centers continue to be a place for women to receive pre- and post-natal medical care and weekly education sessions., Conclusions: Findings support that although there are contextual challenges to a SafeCare implementation in Haiti, birthing centers are ideal and feasible locations in which to deliver SafeCare. Parenting styles differ in their expression of care and (over)protection behaviors and are associated with markedly different outcomes in children. While research has examined the effects of parenting styles on global self-esteem and self-efficacy, little is known about how they might relate to decision-confidence (metacognitive bias) in a task. This study examined the possible relation between students' decision-confidence and the perceived parenting style of their primary caregiver. Participants (N = 246) played a trust game and rated their confidence in task choices. The perceived parenting style of their caregiver was determined using participants' responses to the Parental Bonding Instrument. Participants' decision-confidence was not significantly associated with their caregiver's parenting style. However, decision-confidence was positively related with self-efficacy to a small degree. Exploratory analyses indicated that participants with overprotective caregivers were more likely to report poor self-efficacy and self-esteem; increased depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms; childhood adversity; and anxious and avoidant attachment; while participants with caring caregivers showed the opposite pattern. Background: The prevalence of household violence in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is high, and exposure to violence has significant adverse effects on both mental health and child development across generations. Evidence-based services to improve parenting practices and reduce household violence in LMICs are scarce, particularly across rural regions of West Africa. This study explored the feasibility, acceptability, and potential benefits of an evidence-based home-visiting intervention to promote early childhood development and reduce household violence-the Family Strengthening Intervention for Early Childhood Development and Violence-Prevention (FSI-ECD + VP)-among vulnerable families in rural regions of Sierra Leone., Methods: Eighty dual-caregiver households in the Makeni region of Sierra Leone were included in the study (N = 160 caregivers; 73% female). Eligibility criteria included having at least one child aged 6-36 months and elevated scores (> 62.5) on the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). Community Health Workers (CHWs) employed in the Makeni region completed a 3-week FSI-ECD + VP training. Families were randomized to receive either the FSI-ECD + VP or treatment as usual (TAU). Research assistants blinded to treatment assignment assessed caregiver mental health, caregiver-child interactions, and household violence at baseline, post-intervention, and 3-month follow-up time points., Results: Triangulation of quantitative and qualitative data showed that caregivers, CHWs, and supervisors generally perceived the intervention as beneficial, feasible, and acceptable. Mixed effects models showed that caregivers who received the FSI-ECD + VP had significantly improved caregiver-child relationship outcomes compared to TAU as assessed by the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment and the Observation of Caregiver-Child Interactions at post-intervention. Preliminary data also suggests that caregivers receiving the FSI-ECD + VP were less likely to have experienced intimate partner physical violence during the post-intervention period, and had lower symptoms of anxiety and depression at 3-month follow-up., Conclusions: FSI-ECD + VP delivery by CHWs in Sierra Leone may be feasible and acceptable; it may also help improve caregiver-child interactions and reduce the likelihood of household violence among vulnerable families with young children. Intergroup contact is important to reduce prejudice toward sexual minorities. Yet little is known regarding how kindergarten teachers' contact experiences with sexual minority affect their attitudes toward sexual minorities and their beliefs regarding same-sex family parents' parenting skills and same-sex family children's adjustment. This cross-sectional study recruited kindergarten teachers ( n  = 261; mean age = 38.8 years) in Taiwan in 2021-2022. A self-reported online questionnaire was administered which included questions about quantity and quality of contact experiences with lesbians, gay men (LG) and same-sex families, attitudes toward same-sex families, beliefs regarding same-sex parenting skills, and children's adjustment. Hierarchical multiple regression was used for analysis. The results showed that higher quality of contact with LG was associated with lower prejudice toward LG and with a more positive belief regarding same-sex parents' parenting skills and children's adjustment in same-sex families. The contact experience with same-sex families has an association with positive beliefs regarding same-sex family parents and children. After adjustment of quality of contact, quantity of contact did not show association with attitude toward LG or beliefs regarding same-sex family parents and children. The findings suggest that the quality of contact experience with LG is an important factor to reduce the stereotype against same-sex families.

Questionnaires completed by 589 college students were used to investigate the impact of the risk perception of the COVID-19 pandemic on college students' subjective well-being. The goal was to explore the relationship between college students' risk perception and subjective well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as to analyze the mediating role of emotional regulation and the moderating effect of parenting style. The results showed the following: First, significant negative correlations were found between risk perception and subjective well-being, as well as between the risk perception of the COVID-19 pandemic and emotional regulation. Emotional regulation was significantly positively correlated with subjective well-being. Second, emotional regulation played a mediating role between risk perception and subjective well-being. Third, a positive parenting style played a positive moderating role between risk perception and subjective well-being. We thus concluded that COVID-19 risk perception directly reduces subjective well-being and indirectly affects subjective well-being through emotional regulation. A positive parenting style reduces the negative impact of the risk perception of the COVID-19 pandemic on subjective well-being. Background: The age of Danish women giving birth to their first child has risen throughout the last 50 years, and the number of women and men who are having their first child when they are at advanced maternal or paternal age is increasing worldwide. Postponing parenthood is not unique to Denmark, as the same pattern is seen especially in other European and Western countries. The aim of this study was in a social media setting to explore reflections on the timing of motherhood among Danish women of reproductive age who not yet had children., Method: This study was a qualitative study based on three online focus groups on Facebook. Twenty-six women of reproductive age discussed the timing of motherhood for three days in January 2020. Data were analyzed using Systematic Text Condensation., Results: Three main themes were identified: 'Life before parenthood', 'To plan for a child' and 'A life without children'. Several external and internal conditions influence whether and if so when women consider becoming mothers. Regarding the biological capacity for having children, women compare themselves with their female relatives and friends and colleagues regarding the social norms surrounding motherhood. Women with no children often experience either positive or negative pressure from family, friends, and colleagues regarding when to have children., Conclusion: Several internal and external considerations influence when and if women become mothers. Social surroundings such as family, friends, and colleagues have an impact on women's reproductive considerations in terms of pressure to have children in the future. Danish women tend to compare their reproductive capacity to their female relatives and compare the social norms surrounding motherhood to their female friends. Objectives: In the present era, parents frequently stigmatize themselves for their children's negative behaviors and inadequate social skills. Parents' self-stigma (PSS) may lead to a decrease in parental self-efficacy and quality of marital and family life. In light of these reasons, the principal objective of this study to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the PSS Scale (PSSS) as developed by Eaton et al. (2019) and to investigate the indirect effect that parenting stress has on the relationship between PSS and parental self-efficacy., Methods: We collected data from a total of 1,118 parents via random sampling, with the first part of the study involving 645 participants (M age = 32.64 ± 7.28) and the second part of the study involving 473 participants (M age = 27.43 ± 9.87). In the first part of the study, we employed structural equation modeling for the confirmatory factor analysis and Pearson's correlation coefficient for the criterion-related validity, average variance extracted, and composite reliability analyses. Moreover, we calculated Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega, and Guttman split-half coefficients for the reliability analyses. In the second part of the study, we utilized Hayes' bootstrapping method to assess the indirect effect of parenting stress on the relationship between PSS and parental self-efficacy., Results: The first part of the study confirms the PSSS's 11-item, 3-factor structure, showing the Turkish form to have acceptable goodness-of-fit indices, and found Cronbach's alpha for the PSSS to be 0.89. Furthermore, the first part of the study demonstrates a significant negative correlation between marital life satisfaction and PSS. Meanwhile, the second part of the study has determined PSS to be positively related to parenting stress and negatively related to parental self-efficacy. The second part of the study also indicates parenting stress to have an indirect effect on the association between PSS and parental self-efficacy., Conclusions: The study indicates the Turkish version of the PSSS to be a valid and reliable instrument in Turkish culture for measuring parents' PSS levels regarding their children, with higher scores indicating greater PSS. The scale can be effectively used in both research and clinical settings. The study also suggests parental stress to have a possible impact on the association between PSS and parental self-efficacy. Ethnically and racially underrepresented adolescents are experiencing pubertal development earlier in life than prior cohorts and their White American peers. This early onset of puberty is partly attributable to ethnic-racial discrimination. To contribute to adolescents' resilience and posttraumatic growth in the face of ethnic-racial discrimination, parents' ethnic-racial identities may spill over into their parenting beliefs and practices. Parents who have a sense of belonging with and commitment to their ethnic-racial identities may be aware of discrimination and actively and consistently engage in practices that build supportive home environments to support their children's development in the context of ethnic-racial discrimination. To assess whether parents' ethnic-racial identity commitment predicted adolescents' resilience against ethnic-racial discrimination, we used multiple waves of survey data from adolescent siblings and their parents participating in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (N-adolescents = 1,651; N-families = 805; 35% Black, 37% Latinx, 3% Asian, 25% other ethnically and racially underrepresented youth; 49% boys, 50% girls, 1% gender nonconforming youth; Mage = 11.49, SD = 0.51). Results indicated that adolescents who experienced more frequent ethnic-racial discrimination than their siblings showed more advanced pubertal development. Parental ethnic-racial identity commitment reduced the relation between discrimination and pubertal development within a family. Results suggest that ethnic-racial identity commitment in parents can protect children when they experience ethnic-racial discrimination. Building on extant propositions related to resilience (Infurna & Luthar, 2018), the present study amplifies the depiction of resilience, yields recommendations for analysis of future research, and provides implications regarding the role of ethnicity-race in familial practices. Previous studies have shown that parenting style is essential factor that influence young children's SCA. However, much less is known about the association between different types of parenting styles and children's SCA, let alone the moderating role of executive function (EF)., Methods: This study used measures such as parenting style, EF and SCA to survey children (N = 482) aged 3-7 years old and their parents., Results: The results indicated that democratic parenting style was positively correlated with children's SCA, while other parenting styles were negatively correlated with children's SCA. Moreover, with the exception of inconsistent parenting style and authoritarian parenting style, the predictive effect of parenting styles on young children's SCA is moderated by young children's EF: Democratic parenting styles and children's SCA were significantly and positively correlated when children's EF was high rather than low; coddling and permissive parenting styles and children's SCA were significantly and negatively correlated when children's EF was high rather than low., Conclusions: These findings suggest that democratic parenting styles are effective in promoting the development of SCA in children with high EF., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Previous research has established a connection between parental control and bullying. However, the nuanced relationships involving different combinations of psychological control (PPC) and behavioral control (PBC), along with traditional and cyberbullying, remain ambiguous. Thus, this study investigated the associations of specific parental control dimensions and profiles with traditional and cyberbullying, focusing on the potential mediating mechanism of moral disengagement. A sample of 831 students (48.4% were female; M age  = 18.98 years; SD age  = 1.08) was analyzed. Through latent profile analysis, three control profiles emerged: low PPC and PBC (40.31%), low PPC and high PBC (29.00%), and high PPC and PBC (30.69%). The findings indicated a positive correlation between PPC and traditional/cyberbullying. Moral disengagement mediated the relationship between PPC/PBC and traditional/cyberbullying. Particularly, high PPC and PBC were linked to cyberbullying. Moral disengagement mediated the relationship between high PPC and PBC and traditional/cyberbullying. Background: Refugees' parenting behaviour is profoundly influenced by their mental health, which is, in turn, influenced by their situation of displacement. Our research presents the first systematic review on parenting and mental health in protracted refugee situations, where 78% of all refugees reside., Methods: We pre-registered our protocol and screened documents in 22 languages from 10 electronic databases, reports by 16 international humanitarian organisations and region-specific content from the top 100 websites for each of the 72 countries that 'host' protracted refugees. Our criteria were empirical papers reporting parenting and parental mental health data on refugees who are in a protracted refugee situation. Studies including only internally displaced or stateless persons were excluded., Results: A total of 18,125 documents were screened and 30 studies were included. We identified a universal pathway linking macro-level stressors in protracted refugee situations, such as movement restrictions and documentation issues, to symptoms of depression and anxiety, which, in turn, led to negative parenting practices. Addtionally, culture-specific pathways were observed in the way parental mental health and parenting were expressed. Situational (e.g., overcrowding) and relational factors (e.g., spousal dynamics) modulated both of these pathways. Biases in the research included the over-representation of specific protracted refugee situations, overreliance on self-reported data, and a heavy focus on mothers while neglecting fathers and other caregivers. Longitudinal research is needed to clarify the directionality and causality between specific macro-level stressors in a given protracted refugee situation and parental mental health and practices. Refugees were rarely consulted or involved in the design of research about their parenting and parental mental health., Conclusion: In recognising the existing links between protracted refugee situations, parental mental health, and parenting, our systematic review calls for a shift in thinking: from focusing solely on the micro aspects that affect 'refugee parenting' to understanding and tackling the broader macro-level stressors that drive them. Regular repair of normative mother-toddler conflict is required for relational health; yet, we still need improved delineation of regulation strategies that can promote child cooperation. Contemporary conceptualizations of positive parenting propose that structure and autonomy support each facilitate children's optimal engagement; however, toddler studies rarely address their joint impact and conditional moderation. This observational study examined both dimensions in predicting cooperation among 106 U.S. 30-month-olds and their primarily European-American mothers during a demanding request situation. We also assessed mutuality, an indicator of mother-child relationship quality, from two situations with minimized power differentials to explore whether it moderated associations. Regression analyses confirmed the unique and additive impact of both maternal behavioral dimensions in predicting toddler cooperation and also an interaction effect such that the positive association between maternal autonomy support and toddlers' level of cooperation was accentuated depending on the dyads' mutuality. Results suggest that maternal structure and autonomy support may serve as effective approaches for enlisting or maintaining child cooperation during hierarchical negotiations, and that suboptimal relationship mutuality magnifies toddlers' responses to maternal levels of autonomy support. Background: The determinants of the intention to stop childbearing tend to differ over time and contexts. This allows the issue of families' childbearing intentions to continually remain on the research agenda. As societal context and temporal variability will matter for second childbearing intentions, this study aimed at uncovering the reasons behind the intentions to stop childbearing from one-child mothers' perspective., Method: A qualitative descriptive study in Isfahan City, Iran, was used to scrutinize reasons behind the unwillingness to have a second pregnancy. A purposeful sampling with maximum variation was used to select one-child mothers. Until reaching saturation, 48 semistructured interviews were conducted. A thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data., Results: Five themes and 19 subthemes emerged from the data analysis as structural attributes (economic, social and political conditions), parental attributes (parental (dis)agreements, childrearing troubles, having impatience and being at the inappropriate age for childbearing), husband attributes (having the intention to stop parenting, financially and emotionally nonsupportive and being busy by working), maternal attributes (health-related problems, adverse experience during former pregnancy, being employed, self-compassion, the fear of parity progression and being pessimistic) and child attributes (having a naughty child and having the physical or mental distress of the first child)., Conclusion: Overall, findings highlight the multifaceted nature of factors influencing second childbearing intentions. Structural reasons at macro level, intrafamily relationship, mothers' self-related factors and challenges of raising the first child all play distinct roles in discouraging mothers from a second child intention. Background: This study investigated associations between Self-Criticism and Dependency as factors of vulnerability to depression and maternal resolution. Resolution entails parental cognitive and emotional acceptance of the child's developmental disability., Methods: Our sample included 100 mothers whose children had a diagnosis of cerebral palsy. The Reaction to Diagnosis Interview, the Depressive Experiences Questionnaire and the Depression Scale were administered., Results: The results showed that unresolved mothers scored higher on the dimensions of Self-Criticism and Dependency compared to their resolved counterparts. The hierarchical cluster analysis yielded three maternal profiles based on the scores obtained on the dimensions of vulnerability to depression, regardless of maternal resolution status. The first profile was labeled Low Vulnerability and was characterized by low scores on Self-Criticism and Dependency. The second profile was labeled Dependent and it included mothers with higher scores on Dependency and lower scores on Self-Criticism. The third profile comprised mothers with higher scores on both Self-Criticism and Dependency. Purpose: A scoping review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of parenting and family-based interventions that aim to reduce severe and persistent conduct problems among 10-17 year-olds. The review also examined feasibility for conducting a network meta-analysis of common therapy elements measured by RCTs., Materials and Methods: The review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA- ScR). Searches were conducted in ERIC, PsycINFO, and MEDLINE without limits on publication year, language or publication country. Study methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist for RCTs., Results: Twenty-five eligible RCTs were identified. The studies trialed nine interventions, with Multisystemic Therapy (MST) being the most evaluated ( N  = 10), followed by Functional Family Therapy (FFT, N  = 4), and Treatment Foster Care Oregon (TFCO, N  = 3). Only 10 of the 25 RCTs revealed treatment effect on conduct problems, including 6 of 9 MST, 1 of 4 FFT and all 3 TFCO trials., Discussion: Surprisingly few RCTs of parenting and family-based interventions have been carried out exclusively with this population. Available data suggests that MST and FFT have uncertain effectiveness for reducing severe and persistent conduct problems. While the quality of the reviewed studies was generally high, only two reported substantive data on common therapy elements., Conclusion: There is need for more RCTs of parenting and family-based interventions delivered for older children and adolescents with severe and persistent conduct problems. Future RCTs should systematically measure common therapy elements with a view to advancing intervention science.

Objectives: To evaluate the experience of parenting a preterm infant from birth to adolescence and to raise awareness of the complexity of premature birth and the child's subsequent developmental journey for the entire family., Study Design: A phenomenological, qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions was adopted to obtain retrospective, in-depth narratives. Seven mothers of adolescents born preterm with extremely low birth weight (ELBW) and admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) participated in the study. Interviews were conducted by a trained researcher in qualitative methods, and independent coders performed data analysis., Results: Three phases and eight core themes, chronologically organized, emerged from the thematic analysis: starting from preterm birth (panic, fear and uncertainty; hope and a positive attitude to the future; altered parental role), transitioning to life after hospitalization (fatigue and worry about an uncertain future; need of support), and extending into adolescence (adolescents' fragility; overprotection; post-traumatic personal growth)., Conclusions: The birth of a preterm baby has significant repercussions for the entire family, not only in the period immediately following birth but also for many years afterwards, as the traumatic event is retraced with memories that remain both painful and vivid. Introduction: Our study examined the longitudinal relationship between parenting stress and screen time, outdoor play, and sleep routines in toddler to preschool-aged children., Method: We conducted a descriptive quantitative analysis of a prospective observational cohort study of 300 families with an 18-month-old toddler who were followed for 2 years. Parenting stress was measured using a subscale of the Parenting Stress Index-4 Short Form at child age 18 months. Screen time, outdoor play, and sleep routines were parent-reported at child age 36 months. Multivariable regression estimated associations between parenting stress and screen time behaviors, outdoor play, and sleep routines., Results: Data from 280 children (42.1% female) showed that 39.6% did not have rules around screen time and 82% of families reported frequently having the television on without anyone watching. Background and Aim: Moderate preterm (MP) birth is associated with an increased risk of developmental problems. However, post-discharge support for this group is scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a post-discharge parenting program (TOP program) for MP infants. Three feasibility dimensions were evaluated (1) recruitment capability and compliance, (2) intervention acceptability, and (3) limited efficacy testing., Methods: A group of MP infants with a gestational age (GA) between 32 0/7 -34 6/7 weeks and their parents received six home visits by a TOP interventionist until 6 months corrected age (CA). A pre-posttest intervention design with quantitative and qualitative measures was used. Recruitment capability and compliance, acceptability, and satisfaction with the intervention were evaluated using a questionnaire, checklists, interviews, and a focus group. Infant socio-emotional development, parental distress, self-efficacy, and reflective functioning were measured with questionnaires. Observation measurements were used for infant motor development and parental sensitivity., Results: Thirty-two families completed the six home visits. The satisfaction rate (scale 0-10) was remarkably high (Mean 9.4, range: 8-10). Parents reported that the program was suitable, enhanced their understanding of their infants' developmental needs, and increased their self-efficacy. The infants showed age-appropriate motor and socio-emotional development post-intervention. Parental self-efficacy, reflective functioning, and sensitivity improved from pre to post intervention, with small to large effect sizes., Conclusion: The study demonstrated high compliance, acceptability, and satisfaction with the TOP program for MP infants with promising infant and parent outcomes. Recognizing culturally salient aspects of socialization practices and understanding how these practices support culturally valued aspects of development is an integral component in conducting anti-racist research and validating the lived experiences of minoritized families. With this aim, we explored how Active Direction, an observational rating of an African American approach to parenting measured during mother-child interactions at age 2.5 (n = 172), supported social skills and emotion regulation for children living in a Southwestern metropolitan area of the United States concurrently, in kindergarten (n = 109), and in 1st grade (n = 108). Descriptive findings indicated few significant associations between Active Direction and socials skills or emotion regulation. Exploratory analyses, which included traditional parenting behavior measures of Sensitivity and Intrusiveness, also indicated limited significant relations between any measure of parenting and child skills. However, moderation analyses indicated that high levels of Active Direction attenuated the effects of sensitivity on aspects of child social skills. Background: The Convention on the Rights of the Child acknowledges the fundamental rights of children. Despite the adverse effects of corporal punishment, it continues to be prevalent, especially among sub-Saharan African countries, including Ghana., Objective: This study explored whether parents ever used corporal punishment on their children at home and their motivations for doing so. It also explored whether parents perceive corporal punishment as a violation of children's rights and their views on continuing or discontinuing corporal punishment at home., Participants and Setting: This study involved (100) parents across the ten regions of Ghana., Methods: A semi-structured interview guide was used to conduct interviews with parents. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data using the aid of QSR NVivo version 10., Results: All parents reported that they had ever punished their children. Three sub-themes emerged under the motivation of parents to punish their children. These include (a) building a sense of discipline in the child to prevent future misbehaviour, (b) releasing frustrations on children, and (c) toughening up the child to confront life challenges. Also, parents had mixed opinions on whether corporal punishment violates children's human rights and whether corporal punishment should be practiced at home., Conclusions: This study demonstrated that parents perceived corporal punishment as beneficial for their children's development. Emotions play an important role in fostering positive parenting and healthy child development. This qualitative study explored the affective experiences of racially diverse US fathers with low income across the prenatal, postnatal, and early childhood periods. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 fathers. Interview questions asked about fathers' early parenting experiences that elicit parenting emotions of different valence. Results from thematic analysis demonstrated activation of multiple emotions depending on different proximal and distal experiences. Specific to proximal experiences, fathers reported feeling both excited and anxious about pregnancy and joyful and disappointed at childbirth. Related to distal experiences, fathers reported feeling encouraged by their social support networks that further aid their parenting, but feeling marginalized given systematic barriers (e.g., societal bias, high incarceration rates of Black fathers). Most importantly, fathers' parenting emotions, especially negative ones, led to them resolving to stay involved in their children's lives, gaining a sense of responsibility, and changing behaviors to do right by their children. Fathers resorted to various coping strategies to regulate their negative emotions. Overall, fathers with low income are emotionally resilient. Responsive caregiving is associated with secure attachment and positive child developmental outcomes. However, there is some debate on whether responsive caregiving is a universal construct. Few studies have researched responsive caregiving in diverse cultural settings, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. In this study, we explore if and how responsive caregiving is conceptualized among mothers of children under 3-years-old in rural, Sindh Pakistan. A phenomenological qualitative study was implemented in Naushahro Feroze through in-depth interviews with twenty mothers. Mothers were asked about their aspirations for their children and how they would respond in a variety of different scenarios. Data were analyzed using thematic content analysis with an inductive-deductive coding scheme. There was substantial variation in mothers' described responsive behaviors and beliefs. Almost all mothers described using some form of responsive parenting. Responding to children's demands while the mother was preoccupied, using verbal responses to console children, and if mothers believed that children should be praised, lacked consensus. Most mothers described using breastfeeding for consolation and highlighted the importance of immediately consoling their crying child. Cognitive markers may in theory be more sensitive to the effects of intervention than overt behavioral measures. The current study tests the impact of the Intervention with the British Autism Study of Infant Siblings-Video Interaction for Promoting Positive Parenting (iBASIS-VIPP) on an eye-tracking measure of social attention: dwell time to the referred object in a gaze following task. The original two-site, two-arm, assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial (RCT) of this intervention to increase parental awareness, and responsiveness to their infant, was run with infants who have an elevated familial likelihood for autism (EL). Fifty-four EL infants (28 iBASIS-VIPP intervention, 26 no intervention) were enrolled, and the intervention took place between 9 months (baseline) and 15 months (endpoint), with gaze following behavior measured at 15 months. Secondary intention to treat (ITT) analysis showed that the intervention was associated with significantly reduced dwell time to the referent of another person's gaze (β = -0.32, SE = 0.14, p = 0.03) at 15-month treatment endpoint. Given the established link between gaze following and language, the results are considered in the context of a previously reported, non-significant and transient trend toward lower language scores at the treatment endpoint (Green et al. Introduction: Economic abuse is one form of intimate partner violence (IPV) intended to control a survivor's ability to make, save, or spend money to gain power over them. Perinatal people may be more vulnerable to economic abuse due to changes in employment and finances. This study's aims were to explore how economic abuse manifests among pregnant and parenting survivors and how best to support pregnant and parenting survivors of economic abuse. Methods: We conducted virtual semistructured interviews with IPV survivors and IPV advocates. Participants were recruited through an online recruitment registry, national IPV organizations, and local domestic violence agencies. Interview audiorecordings were transcribed. We used a deductive-inductive thematic analysis approach. Two research team members individually coded each transcript and met to resolve discrepancies in coding. Results: We completed interviews with 18 advocates and 20 survivors. Participants described experiences of financial control, exploitation, and employment sabotage. Partners leveraged the criminal-legal, child welfare, and health care systems and cultural norms about pregnancy, including those related to gender and religion to financially harm survivors. Advocates described how economic abuse impacts marginalized survivors. Dream resources described include cash assistance, healthy relationship and financial education, and employer policies. Discussion: Survivors and advocates reported a variety of experiences with economic abuse during the perinatal period. Future interventions should focus on providing unrestricted cash transfers to survivors, developing education on economic abuse, and creating supportive policies in health care and employment settings. This study highlights the ways that economic abuse specifically impacts perinatal survivors and their children.

Harlow's seminal work on the nature of attachment focused on the importance of warm, responsive, and loving relationships in children's healthy development. While the need for love and care is arguably universal, the ways in which these emotions are expressed can vary across cultural contexts. We examined how Chinese American parents' expressions of love were associated with children's attachment security. A total of 110 Chinese American immigrant parent-child dyads (children 7-11 years old, 49% girls) participated in 3-min conversations in which parents were instructed to communicate love and care. Proposition-level analyses in speech (total 8825 propositions) identified three types of affection: training (guan and chiao shun); relational affection (qin); and validation (acceptance and encouragement of child's own expression of emotion, thoughts, and behaviors). Higher training was observed in parents with lower American orientation and lower income. Higher relational affection was observed in parents with lower income. Higher validation was observed in parents with higher income. Using path analyses, training and validation were found to be positively associated with children's attachment security beyond parenting styles. Effects of parents' relational affection were moderated by children's American orientation. Results demonstrate how immigrant parents draw on multiple cultural scripts to express love and care. These findings expand traditional concepts of parental love in immigrant families and illustrate how bicultural expressions of love can shape attachment security in middle childhood. Although previous research has investigated the impact of parents and peers on test anxiety in secondary or tertiary education, little is known about younger students, especially during the transition to secondary school. Additionally, it is unclear whether these social factors affect girls' and boys' test anxiety differently. Therefore, the current study examined the role of perceived peer integration into the new class context, perceived parental control, and autonomy support on girls' and boys' test anxiety (worry and emotionality) during the transition to secondary school. Data from 1770 students (M age  = 10.47, SD = 0.56; 51% females) were analyzed before (4th grade) and after the transition (5th grade) using a multigroup (girls vs. boys) structural equation model. Both facets of test anxiety decreased from 4th to 5th grade. Perceived peer integration into the new class was only relevant for girls' test anxiety, while parental control predicted post-transition test anxiety for boys. Leveraging data from a longitudinal study of Chinese families (n = 364), this research aims to understand the role of secure base script knowledge as a cognitive mechanism by which early caregiving experiences inform adolescents' friendship quality and feelings of loneliness. Results showed that observed maternal sensitivity at 14 and 24 months old was negatively associated with adolescents' self-reported conflicts with close friends (β = -0.17, p = 0.044) at 15 years old, and this association was partially mediated by their secure base script knowledge assessed at 10 years old. Further, secure base script knowledge moderated the link between adolescents' friend conflict and feelings of loneliness (β = -0.15, p = 0.037). The results support a cognitive script perspective on the association between early caregiving experiences and later socio-emotional adjustment. Furthermore, this study adds to the developmental literature that has previously focused on more stringent and authoritarian aspects of parenting in Chinese families, thereby contributing to our understanding of how sensitive and supportive parenting practices contribute to socio-emotional development outside of Western contexts. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Maternal sensitivity during infancy and toddlerhood has a long-term association with adolescents' friendship quality and adolescents' secure base script partially explains the association. First evidence to demonstrate that the secure base script in attachment relationships mediates the association between early maternal caregiving and socio-emotional development in Chinese adolescents. Despite having adverse physical and mental health outcomes, harsh disciplinary methods are commonly practiced all over the world. This study aims to measure the harsh disciplinary actions taken by parents and their association with child functioning in children, aged 7 to 14 years in Punjab, Pakistan. This study is based on secondary data obtained from the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF's) Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, conducted in the Punjab province from 2017 to 2018. Parents/caregivers of 19,721 children were included in the analysis. Questionnaire-based interviews were conducted, and the data collection form included sociodemographic information, questions on different "Methods of Child Discipline" and the "Child functioning module." The data was analyzed using STATA 15.0. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate the adjusted odds ratio and 95% CI exploring the association between harsh disciplinary methods and child functioning. More than 50% of children were exposed to severe physical, psychological, and emotional disciplinary methods. Exposure to severe physical aggression was associated with increased difficulty in learning (2.60 [1.27, 5.31]), remembering (2.83 [1.47, 5.44]), controlling behavior (1.63 [1.21, 2.18]), anxiety (1.98 [1.25, 3.13]), depression (2.57 [1.57, 4.22]) and making friends (1.94 [1.01, 3.79]). Whereas moderate physical aggression and psychological aggression were associated with (1.48 [1.19, 1.84]) and 1.5 times (1.20, 1.84) increase in difficulty in controlling behavior, respectively. Nonviolent actions were associated with protective odds for self-care (0.33 [0.17, 0.65]), communication (0.51 [0.27, 0.96]), learning (0.56 [0.33, 0.95]), remembering (0.62 [0.39, 0.90]), concentration (0.50 [0.31, 0.80]), anxiety (0.60 [0.46, 0.79]) and depression (0.67 [0.49, 0.92]). Severe disciplinary methods are detrimental to the child's personal care, mental, social, emotional, and psychological well-being, whereas nonviolent actions are associated with positive child functioning. Objective: Support needs in parenting decisions and the associated desire for information and counseling services are insufficiently researched, especially in relation to groups of people with mental health burdens. The aim of this study was to assess information and counseling needs in parenting decisions. In addition, we investigated whether more severe depressive symptomatology is associated with increased needs., Methods: A sample of 187 individuals between the ages of 20 and 44 was surveyed in an online study., Results: Not having enough information on the topic was expressed by 45% of participants, and the desire for information related to multiple topics. A larger offer of professional coun-seling was desired by 65% of the participants, 74% (rather) did not know where to get it. Existing counseling services were used infrequently in relation to needs and with predominantly moderate satisfaction. Introduction: Parenting interventions have the potential to become effective strategies for improving the developmental trajectories of infants and children born prematurely. However, the effectiveness of parenting interventions is not well understood., Methods: A literature search was conducted in five databases. A total of 24 studies involving 3,636 participants were included for review., Results: The results showed a significant effect in cognition, language, motor development, and behavioral problems of children born prematurely. This study explored the influence of genetic and environmental factors on adolescent anxiety. Ninety-eight monozygotic and dizygotic twins from Chongqing, China (aged 15-18 years) were assessed for anxiety with the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ) and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) were applied to assess environmental factors. Venous blood was drawn from the twins for zygosity determination. Structural equation modeling was performed to evaluate the effects of additive genetic factors (A), common environmental factors (C), and individual-specific environmental factors (E) on adolescent anxiety. The estimates of A and E on adolescent anxiety were 0.34 (95% CI = 0.12-0.53) and 0.66 (95% CI:0.47-0.89), respectively. The environment played an important role in adolescent anxiety. Adolescent anxiety was significantly positively correlated with peer relations ( r  = 0.606, p  < 0.05) and negatively correlated with prosocial behavior ( r  = 0.207, p  < 0. 05). No sex differences were observed. Adolescent anxiety was influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. The individual-specific environmental factors played an important role. Consideration of these variables will facilitate the targeted and individualized implementation of specific interventions for adolescent anxiety.

School refusal behaviors in adolescents have deleterious immediate and long-term consequences and are associated with mental ill-health such as anxiety and depression. Understanding factors that place youth at higher risk of school refusal behavior may assist in developing effective management approaches. We investigated parental and adolescent factors that may be associated with school refusal behaviors by specifically focusing on the role of parental and adolescent emotion dysregulation, their anxiety and depression, and parental rearing style. First, we hypothesized that adolescents with school refusal behaviors, as well as their parents, will report higher levels of emotion dysregulation, anxiety, and depression compared to their counterparts without school refusal behaviors. Furthermore, we hypothesized that multivariate models testing the role of parental and child factors concurrently will show that parental (emotion dysregulation, anxiety and depression, and rearing styles) and adolescent (emotion dysregulation, anxiety, and depression) factors are associated with school refusal behaviors. One hundred and six adolescents aged 12 to 18 years and their parents completed an online questionnaire measuring both parental and adolescent emotion dysregulation, anxiety, depression, parental rearing styles, and adolescents' school refusal behaviors. Adolescents with school refusal behaviors reported greater anxiety and depression, with their parents showing greater emotion dysregulation. Multivariate analyses showed that parental emotion dysregulation and adolescent age were associated with school refusal behaviors independently. Parental feeding practices and behaviours are closely related to a number of child outcomes, including eating behaviour and health. The Toddler Feeding Style Questionnaire (TFSQ) was developed to provide an accurate instrument for evaluating parental feeding practices for toddlers by assessing two dimensions: responsiveness and demandingness. As the initial validation study was conducted in a sample of mothers only, the aims of this study are: a) to validate the TFSQ in fathers, b) to analyse its measurement invariance as a function of gender and parenting experience and c) to explore associations between socio-demographic variables and both dimensions. The TFSQ was completed by 377 fathers and 583 mothers. CFA confirmed the two-factor structure within the same items as the initial validation study, with good model fit indices (X 2  = 230.089; TLI = 0.883; CFI = 0.91; RMSEA = 0.08 (90% CI 0.068-0.092), SRMR = 0.070). Strict invariance measurement in terms of gender and parenting experience was achieved. Overall, fathers scored higher than mothers on demandingness, regardless of their parenting experience. Primiparous mothers scored higher than multiparous mothers and primiparous fathers on the responsiveness dimension. However, there were no gender-based differences on this dimension for parents with more than one child. These results confirm that the TFSQ is an adequate and validated instrument for assessing parenting dimensions, as it performs equally well for mothers and fathers, regardless of their parenting experience. The present study describes the efforts of a home visiting (HV) continuous quality improvement learning collaborative aimed at increasing father engagement in HV and parenting. Local implementing agencies (n   = 11) delivering 3 evidence-based HV models participated in the collaborative. Each agency developed and implemented 3 rapid-cycle Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) projects to increase father engagement. Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound (SMART) aims were used to guide development of change strategies and meaningful measurement goals. HV providers collected data from enrolled families (n   = 714) about fathers' level of parenting and HV involvement. Mean father engagement scores increased 39% from the first to the second assessment and over 60% of the PDSAs met or exceeded their SMART aim goal. Data suggest that fathers are open to participating in HV and are responsive to parenting guidance. The underlying mechanisms (i.e., linking and conditioning mechanisms) in the association between perceived parental career expectation and adolescents' career development remain understudied. Under the guidance of the social cognitive career theory, this study used three-wave longitudinal data from 3,196 Chinese adolescents ( M age = 15.55 years old, SD = .44; 52.8% girls at Wave 1) to fill such gaps. Results indicate conditional indirect effects. Specifically, the indirect association of perceived parental career expectation with adolescents' career adaptability and ambivalence via adolescents' career-planning and goal-setting self-efficacy was stronger when perceived parent-adolescent career congruence was higher than that when perceived parent-adolescent career congruence was lower. Such effects were identified even after various career-related parenting practices were controlled for. Implications for theory, future research and interventions were also discussed. Although bidirectional associations between parenting and adolescents' social and emotional outcomes have been investigated, how parental warmth and harsh parenting as two different parenting dimensions, adolescents' prosocial behaviors, and emotional problems were longitudinally and bidirectionally related at between- and within-person levels remains unclear. With a three-wave longitudinal design, the present study examined these associations by employing the random-intercept cross-lagged panel model. Data from 606 Chinese adolescents (M age  = 13.80 years, SD = 0.52, at T1; 45.7% girls) were collected at six-month intervals over one year, and participants completed questionnaires assessing their perception of parenting, prosocial behaviors, and emotional problems online. The results indicated that parental warmth and harsh parenting were significantly associated with adolescents' prosocial behaviors and emotional problems at the between-person level. At the within-person level, adolescents' more prosocial behaviors at T1 predicted later within-person decreases in their emotional problems at T2, which in turn predicted subsequent increased prosocial behaviors and more parental warmth at T3. Additionally, a higher level of harsh parenting at T2 unidirectionally predicted more adolescents' emotional problems at T3. These findings highlighted the developmental cascade processes among adolescents' prosocial behaviors, emotional problems, and parenting and the importance of fostering adolescents' prosocial behaviors in reducing their emotional problems and then promoting subsequent psychosocial adjustment and parent-child bonding., (© 2024. Objective: In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown restrictions, service providers faced significant challenges in delivering programmes to support their vulnerable service users. Foster carers-an already often isolated group of caregivers - were offered an adapted remote-delivery model of the Reflective Fostering Programme (Redfern et al., Adopt. Foster., 42, 2018, 234) from March 2020., Method: This paper outlines the adaptation process of the original programme to online-remote delivery and describes the feedback from participants in the programme., Results: The adaptation of the Reflective Fostering programme to online, remote delivery had both strengths and weaknesses - including wider access to foster carers who might struggle to attend in person and challenge a to maintaining a Mentalizing space online and ensuring confidentiality within a therapeutic space. The programme was overwhelmingly well received by foster carers in this format., Conclusions: There are opportunities and challenges in the delivery of online therapeutic services, particularly those with a group format. Parents (N = 599) of 6-month-old to 10-year-old children were given a handbook intervention that educates about healthy discipline in a pediatric clinic serving low-income families in Nashville, Tennessee. A research assistant spent approximately 1 minute introducing the intervention. A total of 440 parents (73.4%) responded to a follow-up survey 2 to 4 months later. Most parents (88%) who completed the follow-up survey had read at least part of the handbook. Of parents who received the handbook, 63% reported that the handbook helped them discipline their children. Half of parents reported specific changes they made because of the handbook. The most frequently reported changes were more talking/explaining/communicating (25%), more redirecting (7.8%), more patience/listening (6.0%), less anger/yelling (10.8%), and less spanking (7.5%). 42% of parents reported that they shared the handbook with other caregivers, friends, relatives, and children. Aim: To investigate parenting and mother-child interactions in unaffected siblings of autistic children., Method: This cross-sectional study enrolled 274 probands with a DSM-5 diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (87.4% male; mean [SD] age = 11 years 4 months [3 years 2 months]), their unaffected siblings (n = 274, 46.72% male; mean [SD] age = 11 years 3 months [3 years 4 months]), and 296 age-balanced and sex-balanced typically developing children (82.77% male; mean [SD] age = 11 years 3 months [2 years 8 months]). Maternal parenting styles and mother-child interactions were assessed using maternal reporting., Results: Regardless of the child's age, maternal educational level, or presence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autistic children received more overprotective and controlling parental behaviour than unaffected children. Correlates for parenting, mother-child interactions, and behavioural problems in the home setting in children with ASD and typically developing children were autistic traits, maternal anxiety and depressive symptoms, and maternal autistic characteristics; those in unaffected siblings were age, autistic traits, maternal educational level, and maternal autistic characteristics., Interpretation: The diagnosis of ASD in a child can significantly influence maternal parenting behaviours, mother-child interactions, and the child's behavioural problems in the home setting. Studies from high-income populations have shown that stimulating, supportive communicative input from parents promote children's cognitive and language development. However, fewer studies have identified specific features of input supporting the healthy development of children growing up in low- or middle-income countries. The current study proposes and tests a multi-dimensional framework for understanding whether and how caregiver communicative input mediates the associations between socio-economic conditions and early development. We also examine how caregiver conceptual scaffolding and autonomy support uniquely and synergistically explain variation in child outcomes. Participants were 71 Bangladeshi families with five-year-olds who were exposed to a range of biological and psychosocial hazards from birth. Caregiver-child interactions during snack sharing and semi-structured play were coded for caregiver conceptual scaffolding, autonomy support, and child engagement. Findings indicate that the two dimensions of input were correlated, suggesting that caregivers who provided richer conceptual scaffolds were simultaneously more supportive of children's autonomy. Notably, conceptual scaffolding and autonomy support each mediated associations between maternal education and child verbal intelligence quotient (IQ) scores. Further, caregivers who supported greater autonomy in their children had children who participated in conversations more actively, and these children in turn had higher performance IQ scores. When considered simultaneously, conceptual scaffolding was associated with verbal IQ over and above autonomy support, whereas autonomy support related to child engagement, controlling for conceptual scaffolding. These findings shed new light on how environmental factors may support early development, contributing to the design of family-centered, culturally authentic interventions. A variety of parent psychological characteristics (e.g., wellbeing) have been related to children's eating behaviour. However, parent-child feeding interactions are reciprocal and complex, including relationships between parental cognitions, emotions, as well as the influence of children's varying appetitive traits. Using a person-centred approach, children's appetitive traits can be clustered into meaningful eating profiles. To date, no research has examined whether parental behaviours, emotions, and cognitions differ depending on a child's eating profile. Hence, this study recruited parents/primary caregivers from the APPETItE project, whose child had previously been identified as having an avoidant, typical, happy, or avid eating profile. Parents/primary caregivers of children (3-6 years; N = 632) completed online questionnaires examining broader parenting behaviour (parenting styles), parental emotions (stress, wellbeing), and parental cognitions (goals, self-efficacy, time and energy for meal planning and preparation, and perceptions about children's body size). Findings showed significant differences in parent responses to the questionnaires based on children's eating profiles. Parents of children with a happy eating profile reported better psychological wellbeing and greater parenting time and energy for meal planning and preparation, as well as being less likely to report goals of avoiding mealtime stress and conflict. In contrast, parents of children with an avoidant eating profile reported poorer psychological wellbeing. Children with an avid eating profile were perceived by parents as having a higher body weight, whereas children with an avoidant eating profile were perceived as having a lower body weight. Objective: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is rare in childhood but becomes prevalent in adolescence, which suggests that early intervention might be indicated. As childhood predictors of NSSI in adolescence are largely unknown, identifying these predictors was the aim of this study., Method: In a birth cohort sample (n = 759) of Norwegian children, NSSI at 12, 14, or 16 years of age was regressed on predictors of NSSI at age 6 (parental factors: depression, parenting stress, negativity/hostility, emotional availability to the child; child factors: temperamental negative affectivity, emotion regulation, symptoms of emotional and behavioral disorders; external events: victimization from bullying, serious negative life events). Semistructured clinical interviews with adolescents and their parents were used to assess DSM-5-defined NSSI and NSSI disorder., Results: NSSI during the preceding 12 months at 12, 14, or 16 years of age was reported by 81 adolescents (10.0%, 95% CI 8.2-11.9), and NSSI disorder was reported by 20 adolescents (2.7%, 95% CI 1.9-3.8). In multivariable logistic regression analysis, female gender (odds ratio 11.6, 95% CI 4.0-33.5), parenting stress (odds ratio 4.8, 95% CI 1.4-16.5), and parental negativity/hostility (odds ratio 1.8, 95% CI 1.2-2.7) predicted NSSI, whereas child factors and external events were not predictive., Conclusion: Parental factors when the child is 6 years of age-parenting stress and negativity/hostility toward the child-predict NSSI in adolescence. Universal and indicated programs targeting these aspects of parenting during childhood might reduce NSSI in adolescence., Plain Language Summary: Almost 1 in 4 adolescents engage in deliberate self-harm without wanting to die from it. However, childhood predictors of nonsuicidal self-injury are largely unknown. This study from Norway followed 759 children from birth until adolescence. The authors found that children who perceived their parents as more negative and hostile at 6 years old were at increased risk of engaging in self-injury when they became adolescents. Children whose parents reported more stress in the parenting role were also at increased risk of engaging in self-harm during adolescence.
