Abstract

Grotta dei Santi-GDS é um sítio pré- histórico do Paleolítico Médio, situado na região da Toscana (Itália Central). Apresenta vestígios da ocupação neandertalense entre 50.000 e 40.000 anos antes do presente. Por sua importância no panorama paleolítico italiano, o Dipartimento di Scienze Fisiche della Terra e dell’Ambiente-Unità di Ricerca di Preistoria e Antropologia dell’Università di Siena (Itália), há mais de dez anos, conduz as pesquisas, escavações e ações de valorização patrimonial com a finalidade de aprofundar o conhecimento sobre o comportamento neandertal na região e também valorizar um sítio que, por sua própria importância científica e localização, se apresenta como único em seu gênero. Neste capítulo, apresentamos o projeto desenvolvido no sítio GDS com foco numa gestão integrada do território Grotta dei Santi is a prehistoric site dated to the Middle Palaeolithic, located in Toscana (central Italy). The site presents the traces of Neandertal occupations between 50,000 and 40,000 years BP. Due to its importance in the Italian Palaeolithic scenario the Dipartimento di Scienze Fisiche, della Terra e dell’Ambiente, Unità di Ricerca di Preistoria e Antropologia, Università degli Studi di Siena (Italy), since ten years, carries on activities of research, excavation and valorization of the site with the aim to deeper the knowledge of Neandertal behavior in central Italy and to enhance a site that for its scientific significance and geographic location is unique. In this chapter we propose the integrated landscape management model applied to GDS.

Abstract

International audience; European Middle-Pleistocene archaeological and/or paleontological sites lack a unified and precise chronological framework. Despite recent efforts mostly focused on methods such as OSL, ESR/U-series or cosmogenic nuclides, the age of numerous sites from this period fundamentally still relies on qualitative and speculative palaeoenvironmental and/or palaeontological/palaeoanthropological considerations. The lack of robust chronologies, alongwith the scarcity of human fossils, prevent coherent correlations between European sites which in turn limits our understanding of human diffusion dynamics, understand techno-cultural evolution or correlate archaeological sites with palaeoclimatic and environmental records. With the goal of providing an accurate and precise chronological framework based on a multi-method approach, a research network including geochronologists, archaeologist and paleoanthropologists from various French and Italian institutions launched in 2010 a wide study of Middle-Pleistocene archaeological sites of central and southern Italy. This study combining the 39Ar/40Ar method with palaeo-dosimetric methods applied to European sites in the age range of 700 ka to 300 ka is unprecedented. In parallel, a large effort has been done to improve the regional Middle-Pleistocene tephrostratigraphic database through a massive application of both high-precision 40Ar/39Ar geochronological and geochemical investigations.We illustrate our approach and results in addressing several key-sites such as Notarchirico, Valle Giumentina; Ceprano-Campogrande and La Polledrara di Cecanibbio. The accurate and precise chronological framework we built permits us to replace all the investigated archaeological and palaeontological records into a coherent climatic and environmental context. Furthermore, our work provides the opportunity to compare lithic industries from atechnical and evolutionary point of view within a homogeneous temporal frame. These preliminary results border the current limitations of the 40Ar/39Ar method and will guide expected advances to apply our approach to other European sites.

Abstract

27th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2907-2910, Polymer solar cells have evolved as a promising cost-effective alternative to silicon-based ones. However, low efficiency of these plastic devices limits their feasibility for commercial use. The efficiencies of polymer photovoltaic cells got a major boost with the introduction of the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) configuration consisting of an interpenetrating network of electron donor and acceptor materials. Recently, benzodithiophene based polymers has been used as electron donors in polymer solar cells showing very promising properties such as an increasing charge transport and a red shift of the absorption spectra. In this work the synthesis, the spectroscopic and photovoltaic characterization of a copolymer based on (octylsulfanyl)bithiophene and benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’]dithiophene units and a polymer based on (butylsulfanyl)bithiophene unit are reported. BHJ solar cells using these polymers as donor materials blended with [70]PCBM as acceptor were prepared and investigated. The geometry of the device is: glass/ITO/PEDOT:PSS/blend/Ca/Al. The electrical performances of the cells were compared in order to study the influence of the benzodithiophene unit on the polymer backbone. The power conversion efficiency of the best realized polymer solar cell is 2.3% under 100 mW/cm2 AM 1.5G illumination.

Abstract

Summary - Looking at Open Science and Open Data from a broad perspective. This is the idea behind “Scientific data sharing: an interdisciplinary workshop”, an initiative designed to foster dialogue between scholars from different scientific domains which was organized by the Istituto Italiano di Antropologia in Anagni, Italy, 2-4 September 2013.We here report summaries of the presentations and discussions at the meeting. They deal with four sets of issues: (i) setting a common framework, a general discussion of open data principles, values and opportunities; (ii) insights into scientific practices, a view of the way in which the open data movement is developing in a variety of scientific domains (biology, psychology, epidemiology and archaeology); (iii) a case study of human genomics, which was a trail-blazer in data sharing, and which encapsulates the tension that can occur between large-scale data sharing and one of the boundaries of openness, the protection of individual data; (iv) open science and the public, based on a round table discussion about the public communication of science and the societal implications of open science. There were three proposals for the planning of further interdisciplinary initiatives on open science. Firstly, there is a need to integrate top-down initiatives by governments, institutions and journals with bottom-up approaches from the scientific community. Secondly, more should be done to popularize the societal benefits of open science, not only in providing the evidence needed by citizens to draw their own conclusions on scientific issues that are of concern to them, but also explaining the direct benefits of data sharing in areas such as the control of infectious disease. Finally, introducing arguments from social sciences and humanities in the educational dissemination of open data may help students become more profoundly engaged with Open Science and look at science from a broader perspective

However, low efficiency of these plastic solar cells limits their feasibility for commercial use. The efficiencies of polymer photovoltaic cells got a major boost with the introduction of the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) concept consisting of an interpenetrating network of electron donor and acceptor materials. In this work we describe the preparation of BHJ organic solar cells using blend films of poly[4,4’-bis(alkylsulfanyl)- 2,2’-bithiophene] (P3ST) and 1-(3-methoxycarbonyl)-propyl-1-phenyl-(6,6)C61 (PCBM). Photovoltaic cells were prepared with a layer sandwiched between electrodes with different work functions. The electrical performance of the devices were compared with the corresponding one prepared using a blend of commercial poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and PCBM. The quantum efficiency of the device fabricated with P3ST/PCBM blend shows a better response in the visible region compared to the one with P3HT/PCBM.

Abstract

International audience; The fossil site of Senèze, located in the Auvergne volcanic province of the French Massif Central, is well-Known for its mammalian fauna and its role as the reference locality for the Late Villafranchian time interval, an important phase in the evolution of the fauna of Europe. This site is a filled-in volcanic explosion-crater lake (maar) where fossils are found in volcano-clastic sediments interfingering with lacustrine deposits at the lake margin. The Senèze mammals are generally considered to date between 2.2-1.5 Ma, but some authors have argued that this assemblage is note unitary, rather composed of two associations of different age. Moreover, little has been published about the geological setting or the processes of site formation. Our Franco-American research project, co-directed by the three first authors since 2000, is re-examining Senèze for the first time in 60 years. The team effort has three main goals : 1) to clarify the local geology (stratigraphy, mineralogy) of this complex site and determine the taphonomic processes involved; 2) to utilize a combination of methods (ESR and argon dating ; tephrochronological and paleomagnetic correlation) to definitively establish the age of the site and its fauna; and 3) to collect additional mammalian fossils (especially of rare animals such as carnivores, primates and rodents) and samples of the non-mammalian biota, including vertebrates (e.g., birds and fisches), terrestrial and lacustrine invertebrates, pollen and diatoms from known points within the revised and dated stratigraphy. Several partial skeletons which appear devoid of carnivore disturbance have been recovered, and a new taphonomic hypothesis is proposed to explain this pattern. Some preliminary argon dates are presented for levels below the fossil mammals, while preliminary ESR and paleomagnetic results agree with an age broadly near 2 Ma. Pollen collected in situ and from coprolites allows a first step toward paleoenvironmental reconstruction

37. In-vitro and in-vivo antibacterial activity of BI 397, a new semi-synthetic glycopeptide antibiotic.

Abstract

BI 397 (formerly A-A-1) is a semisynthetic derivative of the teicoplanin-like glycopeptide A40926. It was more active in vitro against staphylococci (including some teicoplanin-resistant strains) than teicoplanin and vancomycin. Against streptococci (including penicillin-resistant strains) BI 397 has activity comparable with that of teicoplanin and better than vancomycin. BI 397, when administered to rats by the i.v. route, gives high and long lasting blood levels. It shows excellent activity in models of acute septicaemia in immunocompetent and neutropenic mice. In a rat staphylococcal endocarditis model it is as effective as teicoplanin and vancomycin at reducing bacterial loads in the heart, but at lower dosages and with a reduced number of daily treatments compared with the two glycopeptide controls. BI 397 is highly efficacious in clearing penicillin-susceptible and -resistant pneumococci from lungs of immunocompetent and neutropenic rats. The data from these studies show that BI 397 combines an excellent in-vitro antibacterial activity with favourable pharmacokinetic behaviour resulting in potent in-vivo activity. Abstract

The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of different antibiotics were determined by a broth microdilution method for staphylococci, enterococci and Clostridium difficile. The antimicrobial agents tested were vancomycin, teicoplanin, daptomycin, ramoplanin, MDL 62873, rifampicin and piperacillin, the latter limited to enterococci. In terms of MIC90S, daptomycin (0.89 mg/l). MDL 62873 (0.99 mg/l), and teicoplanin (1.50 mg/l) were found to be highly active against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Daptomycin (MIC90 0.48 mg/l), MDL 62873 (0.95 mg/l) and ramoplanin (1.45 mg/l) were the most active drugs against methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE). Teicoplanin (MIC90 0.45 mg/l) was the most active agent against enterococci, followed by MDL 62873 (0.65 mg/l) and daptomycin (1.60 mg/l). MDL 62873 gave the lowest MIC90 (0.17 mg/l) for C. difficile. Teicoplanin (MIC90 0.42 mg/l), daptomycin (0.87 mg/l) and ramoplanin (0.98 mg/l) were also very active. Our results indicate that teicoplanin, daptomycin, ramoplanin and MDL 62873, a teicoplanin derivative, are potentially effective alternative antibiotics for treatment of infections caused by staphylococci, enterococci and C. difficile. 47. Cloning of a DNA region of Actinoplanes teichomyceticusconferring teicoplanin resistance

Abstract

Teicoplanin is a glycopeptide antibiotic, produced by Actinoplanes teichomyceticus, active against Gram positive bacteria and recently introduced into clinical practice. It blocks cell wall biosynthesis by inhibiting peptidoglycan polymerization. The mechanism(s) of resistance of the producer strains of this class of antibiotics have not yet been characterized. We have constructed a genomic bank of A. teichomyceticusin Streptomyces lividans. A clone from this bank, pTR168, was able to confer resistance to teicoplanin on its sensitive host. The restriction map of plasmid pTR168 and the hybridization pattern to A. teichomyceticusDNA were determined; we have also studied the mechanism of this resistance which seems correlated with a reduced binding of the antibiotic to the cell wall.

Abstract

Background. Current knowledge of risk assessment in survivors of myocardial infarction is largely based on data gathered before the advent of thrombolysis. It must be determined whether and to what extent available information and proposed criteria of prognostication are applicable in the thrombolytic era. Methods and Results. We reassessed risk prediction in the 10 219 survivors of myocardial infarction with follow-up data available (ie, 98% of the total) who had been enrolled in the GISSI-2 trial, relying on a set of prespecified variables. The 3.5% 6-month all-cause mortality rate of these patients compared with the higher value of 4.6% found in the corresponding GISSI-1 cohort, originally allocated to streptokinase therapy, indicates a 24% reduction in postdischarge 6-month mortality. On multivariate analysis (Cox model), the following variables were predictors of 6-month all-cause mortality: ineligibility for exercise test for both cardiac (relative risk [RR], 3.30; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.36-4.62) and noncardiac reasons (RR, 3.28; 95% CI, 2.23-4.72), early left ventricular failure (RR, 2.41; 95% Cl, 1.87-3.09), echocardiographic evidence of recovery phase left ventricular dysfunction (RR, 2.30; 95% CI, 1.78-2.98), advanced (more than 70 years) age (RR, 1.81; 95% Cl, 1.43 -2.30), electrical instability (ie, frequent and/or complex ventricular arrhythmias) (RR, 1.70; 95% Cl, 1.32-2.19), late left ventricular failure (RR, 1.54; 95% Cl, 1.17-2.03), previous myocardial infarction (RR, 1.47; 95% CI, 1.14-1.89), and a history of treated hypertension (RR, 1.32; 95% Cl, 1.05-1.65). Early post-myocardial infarction angina, a positive exercise test, female sex, history of angina, history of insulin-dependent diabetes, and anterior site of myocardial infarction were not risk predictors. On further multivariate analysis, performed on 8315 patients with the echocardiographic indicator of left ventricular dysfunction available, only previous myocardial infarction was not retained as an independent risk predictor. Conclusions. A decline in 6-month mortality of myocardial infarction survivors, seen within 6 hours of symptom onset, has been observed in recent years. Ineligibility for exercise test, early left ventricular failure, and recovery-phase left ventricular dysfunction are the most powerful (RR, >2) predictors of 6-month mortality among patients recovering from myocardial infarction after thrombolysis. Qualitative variables reflecting residual myocardial ischemia do not appear to be risk predictors. The lack of an independent adverse influence of early post-myocardial infarction angina on 6-month survival represents a major difference between this study and those of the prethrombolytic era.
