1. Physical Running in Conformal Gravity and Higher Derivative Scalars

Abstract: We compute the physical running of a general higher derivative scalar coupled to a nondynamical metric and of higher derivative Weyl invariant gravity with a dynamical metric in four dimensions. In both cases, we find that the physical running differs from the $\mu$-running of dimensional regularization because of infrared divergences which are present in amplitudes also at large momenta, differently from what happens in standard two derivative theories. We use the higher derivative scalar as a toy-model to elaborate on the properties of the conformal limit in relation to the trace anomaly. The physical running of higher derivative Weyl gravity, while different from the $\mu$-running, remains asymptotically free, suggesting that the model is a viable completion of Einstein's gravity, at least from the point of view of its renormalization group properties., Comment: 6 pages

2. Almost refinement, reaping, and ultrafilter numbers

Abstract: We investigate the combinatorial structure of the set of maximal antichains in a Boolean algebra ordered by almost refinement. We also consider the reaping relation and its associated cardinal invariants, focusing in particular on reduced powers of Boolean algebras. As an application, we obtain that, on the one hand, the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is greater than or equal to the cofinality of the meagre ideal and, on the other hand, a suitable parametrized diamond principle implies that the ultrafilter number of the Cohen algebra is equal to $\aleph_1$.

3. Generic Absoluteness Revisited

Abstract: The present paper is concerned with the relation between recurrence axioms and Laver-generic large cardinal axioms in light of principles of generic absoluteness and the Ground Axiom. M. Viale proved that Martin's Maximum$^{++}$ together with the assumption that there are class many Woodin cardinals implies $\mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)^{\mathsf{V}}\prec_{\Sigma_2}\mathcal{H}(\aleph_2)^{\mathsf{V}[\mathbb{G}]}$ for a generic $\mathbb{G}$ on any stationary preserving $\mathbb{P}$ which also preserves Bounded Martin's Maximum. We show that a similar but more general conclusion follows from each of $(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{H}(\kappa))_{\Sigma_2}$-${\sf RcA}^+$ (which is a fragment of a reformulation of the Maximality Principle for $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{H}(\kappa)$), and the existence of the tightly $\mathcal{P}$-Laver-generically huge cardinal. While under "$\mathcal{P}=$ all stationary preserving posets", our results are not very much more than Viale's Theorem, for other classes of posets, "$\mathcal{P}=$ all proper posets" or "$\mathcal{P}=$ all ccc posets", for example, our theorems are not at all covered by his theorem. The assumptions (and hence also the conclusion) of Viale's Theorem are compatible with the Ground Axiom. In contrast, we show that the assumptions of our theorems (for most of the common settings of $\mathcal{P}$ and with a modification of the large cardinal property involved) imply the negation of the Ground Axiom. This fact is used to show that fragments of Recurrence Axiom $(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{H}(\kappa))_\Gamma$-${\sf RcA}^+$ can be different from the corresponding fragments of Maximality Principle ${\sf MP}(\mathcal{P},\mathcal{H}(\kappa))_\Gamma$ for $\Gamma=\Pi_2$ or $\Sigma_2$.

4. Dust sub-mm emission in Green Valley galaxies

Abstract: Context. Green valley (GV) galaxies are objects defined on a color-magnitude, or color-mass, diagram which are associated with a transition from a star-forming to a quiescent state (quenching), or vice versa (rejuvenation). Aims. We study the sub-mm emission of galaxies in the GV and link it with their physical evolutionary properties. Methods. We exploit a semi-analytic model (SAM) for galaxy evolution which includes a detailed treatment of dust production and evolution in galactic contexts. We model the observational properties of simulated galaxies by post-processing the SAM catalogs with the spectral synthesis and radiative transfer code GRASIL. Results. Our model produces a clear bimodality (and thus a GV) in the color-mass diagram, although some tensions arise when compared to observations. After having introduced a new criterion for identifying the GV in any dataset, we find that most blue and GV galaxies in our model are emitters at $250\,{\mu \rm m}$ (with fluxes $\geq 25\,{\rm mJy}$), in keeping with GAMA results. In the color-$S_{250\, \mu \rm m}$ diagram, GV galaxies exhibit intermediate colors yet maintain significant sub-mm fluxes. This occurs because, while specific star formation rates drop sharply during quenching, the dust content remains relatively high during the GV transition, powering sub-mm emission. Rejuvenating galaxies in the GV, which were previously red, have experienced a star formation burst that shifts their color to green, but their $S_{250\, \mu \rm m}$ fluxes remain low due to still low dust mass. Conclusions. Our galaxy evolution model highlights the delay between star formation and dust evolution, showing that sub-mm emission is not always a safe indicator of star formation activity, with quenching (rejuvenating) GV galaxies featuring relatively large (low) sub-mm emission., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. 5. Reconciling Kubo and Keldysh Approaches to Fermi-Sea-Dependent Nonequilibrium Observables: Application to Spin Hall Current and Spin-Orbit Torque in Spintronics

Abstract: Quantum transport studies of spin-dependent phenomena in solids commonly employ the Kubo or Keldysh formulas for the nonequilibrium density operator in the steady-state linear-response regime. Its trace with operators of interest, such as the spin density, spin current density, etc., gives expectation values of experimentally accessible observables. For local quantities, these formulas require summing over the manifolds of {\em both} Fermi-surface and Fermi-sea states. However, debates have been raging in the literature about the vastly different physics the two formulations can apparently produce, even when applied to the same system. Here, we revisit this problem using infinite-size graphene with proximity-induced spin-orbit and magnetic exchange effects as a testbed. By splitting this system into semi-infinite leads and central active region, in the spirit of Landauer formulation of quantum transport, we prove the {\em numerically exact equivalence} of the Kubo and Keldysh approaches via the computation of spin Hall current density and spin-orbit torque in both clean and disordered limits. The key to reconciling the two approaches are the numerical frameworks we develop for: ({\em i}) evaluation of Kubo(-Bastin) formula for a system attached to semi-infinite leads, which ensures continuous energy spectrum and evades the need for commonly used phenomenological broadening introducing ambiguity; and ({\em ii}) proper evaluation of Fermi-sea term in the Keldysh approach, which {\em must} include the voltage drop across the central active region even if it is disorder free., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, 115 references; Supplemental Material is available from https://wiki.physics.udel.edu/qttg/Publications

Abstract: Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. 7. A$^3$COSMOS: the dust mass function and dust mass density at $0.5<z<6$

Abstract: Context. Although dust in galaxies represents only a few percent of the total baryonic mass, it plays a crucial role in the physical processes occurring in galaxies. Studying the dust content of galaxies, particularly at high$-z$, is therefore crucial to understand the link between dust production, obscured star formation and the build-up of galaxy stellar mass. Aims. To study the dust properties (mass and temperature) of the largest Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)-selected sample of star-forming galaxies available from the archive (A$^3$COSMOS) and derive the dust mass function and dust mass density of galaxies from $z=0.5\,-\,6$. Methods. We performed spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with the CIGALE code to constrain the dust mass and temperature of the A$^3$COSMOS galaxy sample, thanks to the UV-to-near-infrared photometric coverage of each galaxies combined with the ALMA (and Herschel when available) coverage of the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of their dust-continuum emission. We then computed and fitted the dust mass function by combining the A$^3$COSMOS and state-of-the-art {\it Herschel} samples, in order to obtain the best estimate of the integrated dust mass density up to $z \sim 6$. Results. Galaxies in \a3 have dust masses between $\sim 10^8$ and $\sim 10^{9.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. From the SED fitting, we were also able to derive a dust temperature, finding that the distribution of the dust temperature peaks at $\sim 30-35$K. The dust mass function at $z=0.5\,-\,6$ evolves with an increase of $M^*$ and decrease of the number density ($\Phi ^*$) and is in good agreement with literature estimates. The dust mass density shows a smooth decrease in its evolution from $z \sim 0.5$ to $z \sim 6$, which is steeper than what is found by models at $z \gtrsim 2$., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication on A&A

Abstract: Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. 9. Intertwined Formation of $\rm{H_2}$, Dust, and Stars in Cosmological Simulations

Abstract: Context: Molecular hydrogen ($\rm{H_2}$) is crucial in galaxy formation and evolution, serving as the main fuel for star formation (SF). In metal-enriched environments, $\rm{H_2}$ primarily forms on interstellar dust grain surfaces. However, due to the complexities of modelling this process, SF in cosmological simulations often relies on empirical or theoretical frameworks validated only in the Local Universe to estimate the abundance of $\rm{H_2}$. Aims: This study aims to model the connection between star, dust, and $\rm{H_2}$ formation processes in cosmological simulations. Methods: We include $\rm{H_2}$ formation on dust grain surfaces and account for molecule destruction and radiation shielding into the SF and feedback model MUPPI. Results: The model reproduces key properties of observed galaxies for stellar, dust, and $\rm{H_2}$ components. The cosmic density of $\rm{H_2}$ ($\rho_{\rm{H2}}$) peaks around $z=1.5$, then decreases by half towards $z=0$, showing milder evolution than observed. The $\rm{H_2}$ mass function since $z=2$ also shows gentler evolution. Our model successfully recovers the integrated molecular Kennicutt-Schmidt (mKS) law between surface star formation rate ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$) and surface $\rm{H_2}$ density ($\Sigma_{\rm H2}$) at $z=0$, already evident at $z=2$ with a higher normalization. We find hints of a broken power law with a steeper slope at higher $\Sigma_{\rm H2}$, aligning with some observational findings. Additionally, the $\rm{H_2}$-to-dust mass ratio in galaxies shows a decreasing trend with gas metallicity and stellar mass. The $\rm{H_2}$-to-dust mass fraction for the global galaxy population is higher at higher redshifts. The analysis of the atomic-to-molecular transition on a particle-by-particle basis suggests that gas metallicity cannot reliably substitute the dust-to-gas ratio in models simulating dust-promoted $\rm{H_2}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: Removing cold interstellar medium (ISM) from a galaxy is central to quenching star formation. However, the exact mechanism of this process remains unclear. The objective of this work is to find the mechanism responsible for dust and gas removal in simulated early-type galaxies (ETGs). A statistically significant sample of massive (M_*>$10^{10}$M$_\odot$), simulated ETG in a redshift range of 0.02--0.32 is studied in the context of its ISM properties. In particular, we investigate the cold dust and gas removal timescales, the cold gas inflows, and their relation with black hole (BH) mass. We also investigate the evolution of galaxies in the dust vs. star formation rate (SFR) plane and the influence of merger events. We find agreement with previous observational works considering the timescales of dust and HI removal from ETGs. When considering the dust-to-stellar mass ratio as a function of time in simulations, we recovered a similar decline as in the observational sample as a function of stellar age, validating its use for timing the ISM decline. Moreover, we recover the observed relation between dust mass and SFR for actively star-forming galaxies as well as for passive ETGs. We also show that starburst galaxies form their own sequence on the dust vs. SFR plot in a form $\log(M_{\rm dust, SB})= 0.913\times \log({\rm SFR}) + 6.533$ with $2\sigma$ scatter of 0.32. Finally, we find that type II supernova reverse shocks dominate the dust destruction at the early stages of ETG evolution, while at later times stellar feedback becomes more important. We show that merger events lead to morphological transformations by increasing the bulge-to-total stellar mass ratio followed by an increase in BH masses. Abstract: The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Abstract: We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) Abstract: We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: submitted to Phys. 14. Full QCD with milder topological freezing

Abstract: We simulate $N_f=2+1$ QCD at the physical point combining open and periodic boundary conditions in a parallel tempering framework, following the original proposal by M. Hasenbusch for $2d$ $\mathrm{CP}^{N-1}$ models, which has been recently implemented and widely employed in $4d$ $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ pure Yang-Mills theories too. We show that using this algorithm it is possible to achieve a sizable reduction of the auto-correlation time of the topological charge in dynamical fermions simulations both at zero and finite temperature, allowing to avoid topology freezing down to lattice spacings as fine as $a \sim 0.02$ fm. Abstract: The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version

Abstract: We test the predictions of hadronic interaction models regarding the depth of maximum of air-shower profiles, $X_{max}$, and ground-particle signals in water-Cherenkov detectors at 1000 m from the shower core, $S(1000)$, using the data from the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The test consists in fitting the measured two-dimensional ($S(1000)$, $X_{max}$) distributions using templates for simulated air showers produced with hadronic interaction models EPOS-LHC, QGSJet II-04, Sibyll 2.3d and leaving the scales of predicted $X_{max}$ and the signals from hadronic component at ground as free fit parameters. The method relies on the assumption that the mass composition remains the same at all zenith angles, while the longitudinal shower development and attenuation of ground signal depend on the mass composition in a correlated way. The analysis was applied to 2239 events detected by both the fluorescence and surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory with energies between $10^{18.5}$ to $10^{19.0}$ eV and zenith angles below $60^\circ$. We found, that within the assumptions of the method, the best description of the data is achieved if the predictions of the hadronic interaction models are shifted to deeper $X_{max}$ values and larger hadronic signals at all zenith angles. Abstract: Thermodiffusive instabilities can have a leading order effect on flame propagation for lean premixed hydrogen flames. Many simulation studies have been performed to study this effect, but almost exclusively in two-dimensional (2D) or domain sizes too small to support the characteristic large-scale features of the instability. The main purpose of this study is to quantify the differences of 3D and 2D flames using simulations on sufficiently large domains. To this end, direct numerical simulations (DNS) of thermodiffusively unstable laminar premixed hydrogen flames stabilized in 3D domains were performed. The effects of confinement on the flame dynamics are rigorously investigated by varying the domain size. The flame burning velocity shows a strong dependence on the domain size when the lateral domain width is less than 50 laminar flame thicknesses. The characteristic patterns of the thermodiffusively unstable flame are analyzed in detail, including the instantaneous flame structure, global burning velocity, flame surface area, stretch factor, curvature distribution, and the cell size. The effects of the computational setup (2D vs. 3D) on the local flame front curvature and the distributions of the thermo-chemical quantities are quantified through a conditional analysis. The formation and destruction mechanisms of the distinct cellular structures observed in the 3D domain are analyzed focusing on the interactions between the flame dynamics and the flow field, and the contributions of the production of flame surface density, kinematic restoration, and curvature dissipation are quantified. Compared with the corresponding 2D simulation, the flame surface area in the cut plane of the 3D configuration is similar, yet the burning velocity and the stretch factor are increased. The reason for this is the difference in curvature statistics in 2D and 3D.

25. Star Formation and Dust in the Cosmic Web

Abstract: The large-scale environment of the cosmic web is believed to impact galaxy evolution, but there is still no consensus regarding the mechanisms. We use a semi-analytic model (SAM) galaxy catalog to study the star formation and dust content of local galaxies in different cosmic environments of the cosmic web, namely voids, filaments, walls, and nodes. We find a strong impact of the environment only for galaxies with $M_{\rm stars}\lesssim10^{10.8}\, M_\odot$: the less dense the environment, the larger the star formation rate and dust content at fixed stellar mass. This is attributed to the fact that galaxies in less dense environments typically feature younger stellar populations, a slower evolution of their stellar mass and a delayed star formation compared to galaxies in denser environments. As for galaxies with $M_{\rm stars}\gtrsim 10^{10.8}\, M_\odot$ differences among environments are milder due to the disc instability (DI) driven supermassive black hole (SMBH) growth implemented in the SAM, which makes SMBH growth, and thus galaxy quenching, environment insensitive. We qualitatively test our predictions against observations by identifying environments in the SDSS-DR16 using dust masses derived from the GAMA survey. The agreement is encouraging, particularly at ${\rm log} \, M_{\rm stars}/M_\odot\gtrsim 10.5-11$, where sSFRs and dust masses appear quite environment-insensitive. Abstract: Learning to read primary scientific literature (PSL) is an important part of developing scientific literacy skills. First-year students entering college often have little previous exposure to PSL and therefore face initial barriers in learning how to engage with PSL. Annotations have been shown to be a useful tool in undergraduate education and have potential for guiding students in developing higher-level reading strategies. In this study, we collected both qualitative and quantitative data to test the hypothesis of whether annotated PSL aids in the development of reading strategies for novice students learning to read PSL. Our qualitative results showed that annotations help students (i) break down PSL into manageable pieces, (ii) summarize the text, (iii) identify key information, and (iv) distinguish between different sections of PSL. Quantitatively, we saw no significant influence of annotations on the development of reading strategies for students learning to read PSL. Overall, our study provides a window into better understanding of specific strategies that students employ in reading PSL. Collectively, we suggest incorporating annotated PSL with some scaffolding social activities as an effective strategy to bring novice readers up the on-ramp of scientific literacy.

Abstract: Dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the universe. Using the sensitivity of the Pierre Auger Observatory to ultra-high energy neutrinos and photons, we constrain a specific extension of the Standard Model of particle physics that meets the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle by coupling it to a sector of ultra-light sterile neutrinos. Our results show that, for a typical dark coupling constant of 0.1, the mixing angle $\theta_m$ between active and sterile neutrinos must satisfy, roughly, $\theta_m \lesssim 1.5\times 10^{-6}(M_X/10^9~\mathrm{GeV})^{-2}$ for a mass $M_X$ of the dark-matter particle between $10^8$ and $10^{11}~$GeV., Comment: Version accepted for publication in PRD Letters, including Supplemental Material

Abstract: Charge transport in disordered two-dimensional (2D) systems showcases a myriad of unique phenomenologies that highlight different aspects of the underlying quantum dynamics. Electrons in such systems undergo a crossover from ballistic propagation to Anderson localization, contingent on the system's effective coherence length. Between the extended and localized phases lies a diffusive crossover in which the charge conductivity is properly defined. The numerical observation of this regime has remained elusive because it requires fully coherent transport to be simulated in systems whose dimensions are sufficiently large to meaningfully split the mean-free path and localization length scales. To address this challenge, we employed a novel linear scaling time-resolved approach that enabled us to derive the dc-transport characteristics and observe the three expected 2D transport regimes - ballistic, diffusive, and localized., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA), part of the Pierre Auger Observatory, is currently the largest array of radio antenna stations deployed for the detection of cosmic rays, spanning an area of $17$ km$^2$ with 153 radio stations. It detects the radio emission of extensive air showers produced by cosmic rays in the $30-80$ MHz band. Here, we report the AERA measurements of the depth of the shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$), a probe for mass composition, at cosmic-ray energies between $10^{17.5}$ to $10^{18.8}$ eV, which show agreement with earlier measurements with the fluorescence technique at the Pierre Auger Observatory. We show advancements in the method for radio $X_\text{max}$ reconstruction by comparison to dedicated sets of CORSIKA/CoREAS air-shower simulations, including steps of reconstruction-bias identification and correction, which is of particular importance for irregular or sparse radio arrays. Using the largest set of radio air-shower measurements to date, we show the radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy, reaching a resolution better than $15$ g cm$^{-2}$ at the highest energies, demonstrating that radio $X_\text{max}$ measurements are competitive with the established high-precision fluorescence technique. In addition, we developed a procedure for performing an extensive data-driven study of systematic uncertainties, including the effects of acceptance bias, reconstruction bias, and the investigation of possible residual biases. Abstract: We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence data set, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution $X_\text{max}$ measurements with even a sparse radio array. 43. Universality properties of forcing

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate forcing as a tool to construct universal models. In particular, we look at theories of initial segments of the universe and show that any model of a sufficiently rich fragment of those theories can be embedded into a model constructed by forcing. Our results rely on the model-theoretic properties of good ultrafilters, for which we provide a new existence proof on non-necessarily complete Boolean algebras.

Abstract: The wind mission Aeolus of the European Space Agency was a groundbreaking achievement for Earth observation. Between 2018 and 2023, the space-borne lidar instrument ALADIN onboard the Aeolus satellite measured atmospheric wind profiles with global coverage which contributed to improving the accuracy of numerical weather prediction. The precision of the wind observations, however, declined over the course of the mission due to a progressive loss of the atmospheric backscatter signal. The analysis of the root cause was supported by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina whose fluorescence detector registered the ultraviolet laser pulses emitted from the instrument in space, thereby offering an estimation of the laser energy at the exit of the instrument for several days in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The reconstruction of the laser beam not only allowed for an independent assessment of the Aeolus performance, but also helped to improve the accuracy in the determination of the laser beam's ground track on single pulse level. Abstract: Ensuring the safe and reliable operation of autonomous vehicles under adverse weather remains a significant challenge. To address this, we have developed a comprehensive dataset composed of sensor data acquired in a real test track and reproduced in the laboratory for the same test scenarios. The provided dataset includes camera, radar, LiDAR, inertial measurement unit (IMU), and GPS data recorded under adverse weather conditions (rainy, night-time, and snowy conditions). We recorded test scenarios using objects of interest such as car, cyclist, truck and pedestrian -- some of which are inspired by EURONCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme). The sensor data generated in the laboratory is acquired by the execution of simulation-based tests in hardware-in-the-loop environment with the digital twin of each real test scenario. The dataset contains more than 2 hours of recording, which totals more than 280GB of data. Therefore, it is a valuable resource for researchers in the field of autonomous vehicles to test and improve their algorithms in adverse weather conditions, as well as explore the simulation-to-reality gap. Abstract: The Pierre Auger Collaboration has embraced the concept of open access to their research data since its foundation, with the aim of giving access to the widest possible community. A gradual process of release began as early as 2007 when 1% of the cosmic-ray data was made public, along with 100% of the space-weather information. In February 2021, a portal was released containing 10% of cosmic-ray data collected from 2004 to 2018, during Phase I of the Observatory. The Portal included detailed documentation about the detection and reconstruction procedures, analysis codes that can be easily used and modified and, additionally, visualization tools. Since then the Portal has been updated and extended. In 2023, a catalog of the 100 highest-energy cosmic-ray events examined in depth has been included. A specific section dedicated to educational use has been developed with the expectation that these data will be explored by a wide and diverse community including professional and citizen-scientists, and used for educational and outreach initiatives. 47. Conformalized Multimodal Uncertainty Regression and Reasoning

Abstract: This paper introduces a lightweight uncertainty estimator capable of predicting multimodal (disjoint) uncertainty bounds by integrating conformal prediction with a deep-learning regressor. We specifically discuss its application for visual odometry (VO), where environmental features such as flying domain symmetries and sensor measurements under ambiguities and occlusion can result in multimodal uncertainties. Our simulation results show that uncertainty estimates in our framework adapt sample-wise against challenging operating conditions such as pronounced noise, limited training data, and limited parametric size of the prediction model. We also develop a reasoning framework that leverages these robust uncertainty estimates and incorporates optical flow-based reasoning to improve prediction prediction accuracy. Thus, by appropriately accounting for predictive uncertainties of data-driven learning and closing their estimation loop via rule-based reasoning, our methodology consistently surpasses conventional deep learning approaches on all these challenging scenarios--pronounced noise, limited training data, and limited model size-reducing the prediction error by 2-3x.

Abstract: Operating since 2004, the Pierre Auger Observatory has led to major advances in our understanding of the ultra-high-energy cosmic rays. The latest findings have revealed new insights that led to the upgrade of the Observatory, with the primary goal of obtaining information on the primary mass of the most energetic cosmic rays on a shower-by-shower basis. In the framework of the upgrade, called AugerPrime, the 1660 water-Cherenkov detectors of the surface array are equipped with plastic scintillators and radio antennas, allowing us to enhance the composition sensitivity. To accommodate new detectors and to increase experimental capabilities, the electronics is also upgraded. This includes better timing with up-to-date GPS receivers, higher sampling frequency, increased dynamic range, and more powerful local processing of the data. In this paper, the design characteristics of the new electronics and the enhanced dynamic range will be described. The manufacturing and test processes will be outlined and the test results will be discussed. The calibration of the SD detector and various performance parameters obtained from the analysis of the first commissioning data will also be presented.
