Context Most states require adolescents younger than 18 to involve a parent prior to obtaining an abortion, yet little is known about adolescents' reasons for choosing abortion or the social support received by those who seek judicial bypass of parental consent for abortion. Methods In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 individuals aged 16-19 who sought judicial bypass in Texas between 2015 and 2016 to explore why they chose to get an abortion, who they involved in their decision and what their experiences of social support were. Data were analyzed thematically using stigma and social support theories. Results Participants researched their pregnancy options and involved others in their decisions. They chose abortion because parenting would limit their futures, and they believed they could not provide a child with all of her or his needs. Anticipated stigma motivated participants to keep their decision private, although they desired emotional and material support. Not all male partners agreed with adolescents' decisions to seek an abortion, and agreement by some males did not guarantee emotional or material support; some young women described their partners' giving them the "freedom" to make the decision as avoiding responsibility. After a disclosure of their abortion decision, some participants experienced enacted stigma, including shame and emotional abuse. Conclusions Abortion stigma influences adolescents' disclosure of their abortion decisions and limits their social support. Fears of disclosing their pregnancies and abortion decisions are justified, and policymakers should consider how laws requiring parental notification may harm adolescents. Further research is needed on adolescents' experiences with abortion stigma.

The southern United States accounted for 52% of new HIV diagnoses in 2015. Visits to primary care providers (PCPs) offer opportunities for routine HIV screening. However, of at-risk persons in the United States who visited a health care provider within the previous year, >75% were not offered a test for HIV. Perceptions of patient population risk by PCPs could offer insight into these missed opportunities, and inform development of HIV testing interventions for PCPs to increase routine screening. During April-October 2017, we conducted online surveys regarding PCP's perceptions of patient HIV risk in six areas of the South with high-HIV prevalence. Surveys queried HIV-related knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and practices. Free-text responses to the question "Are there any unique or special risk factors relating to HIV infection in your patient population?" were analyzed using NVivo for applied thematic analysis. Of 526 respondents, the mean age was 47 years with 65% white, 13% Asian/other, 13% black, 6% Hispanic/Latino; 71% female; 93% straight/heterosexual; and 35% offered HIV screening correctly based on standard of care. Main themes revealed were as follows: (1) provider perceptions of patient risk factors (e.g., "injection drug use is rampant"), (2) provider perceptions of patient barriers to access and care (e.g., "concern for parental notification and cost for treatment"), and (3) provider misconceptions of HIV risk and patient stigmatization (e.g., "I have a low-risk population"). Our findings suggest that PCPs in the South may warrant education regarding local HIV prevalence and routine HIV screening and prevention practices.

Confidentiality protections are a key component of high-quality adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care. Research has shown that adolescents value confidentiality and are more likely to seek care and provide honest information when confidentiality protections are implemented. However, many adolescents do not receive confidential SRH care. We synthesize studies of adolescents, parents, and providers to identify confidentiality-related factors that may explain why adolescents do not seek care or receive confidential services when they do access care. We present themes relevant to each population that address individual-level knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, as well as clinic-level characteristics such as protocols, billing mechanisms, and clinic type. These findings have the potential to inform intervention efforts to improve the delivery of confidential SRH care for young people.

School-based body mass index (BMI) screening is required in 50% of states with parent notification letters distributed among 11 of those states. Additional research is needed to effectively communicate screening results to parents. We conducted a pilot investigation of parent acceptability of an electronic, interactive BMI parental notification letter (e-BMI) along with the feasibility of implementing an e-BMI letter in the school setting. In addition, we assessed parental attitudes and practices regarding their child’s weight-related behaviors. Electronic letter distribution and parent receipt were consistent with traditional paper letter mailings; however, we did not observe any significant behavioral impacts with either letter format. Parents reported interest in wellness programming offered by the school, a potential opportunity for schools to engage families in healthful practices. Additional research is needed to understand the impact of e-BMI letters and accompanying web-based resources specifically for parents of students with overweight or obesity.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) in Africa has high prevalence, morbidity, and early mortality. Difficulties in reaching parents following infant SCD screening dampen program effectiveness. Text messaging may support initial postscreening parental notification. We explored SCD awareness, and feasibility and acceptability of text messaging about screening follow-up among convenience samples of caretakers with children under 5 years (n=115) at 3 sites: a SCD family conference or 2 general pediatric clinics in urban or rural Uganda. Two thirds of the conference-based participants and 8% at clinic sites had affected children. At the clinics, 64% of caretakers were aware of SCD. In all, 87% claimed current possession of mobile phones; 89% previously had received messages. A sample text on the availability of screening results and need to bring their child to SCD clinic was at least partially understood by 82%. Overall, 52% preferred communication for initial follow-up by telephone over text message. Concerns about texting included phone access, privacy or cost, and readability of messages. Caretakers identified concerns about distance, cost, or preference for another clinic as additional barriers to SCD follow-up. Findings suggest that text messaging to caretakers may be feasible, but less acceptable compared with a telephone call about initial follow-up from newborn SCD screening.

In this paper, we examine the dataset representing bus breakdowns and delays in the New York public school system. We analyze several measures involving the companies involved in delays, the season/date of the delays, the causes of the delays and other measures. We have several conclusions and recommendations.

Background The National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) is a child weight monitoring system in England, taking place in the first and final years of primary school. Many local authorities consider it important to inform parents if their child is overweight, and do so by letter alongside the offer of support and advice. Such letters have been met with mixed reactions from parents, but research seeking to better understand parents’ responses is often limited by reliance on survey data and low participation rates. This study aimed to collect a broad variety of perspectives on the programme by analyzing views expressed in parent-to-parent discussions posted online. Methods UK-based online parenting fora were used to identify discussion threads based around the NCMP between 2010 and 2017. Thirty-one discussion threads from two parent fora were identified. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes in these data. Results The primary themes identified related to (1) the legitimacy of feedback and judgement from health professionals, (2) the relative importance of collecting population level data above individual preferences, and (3) risks versus benefits of having conversations with children about weight. Most threads adopted an ‘argument, counter-argument’ format, providing two sides to each issue raised. Information and opinions consistent with public health messages were frequently provided, such as how data are used, that feedback is intended to be helpful, and the importance of collecting national data. There was little evidence of individual parents shifting their views in response to others’ arguments. Conclusions This study provides novel insight into peer-to-peer debates about the NCMP, including the arguments parents find convincing and acceptable for and against a national programme to weigh children and provide feedback to parents about their weight. Online fora were used as an opportunity to express criticism or distress, but also to seek advice from peers regarding concerns about whether or not to opt-out. Thus, both general issues related to the legitimacy of population screening and outcomes for individual children were of concern to parents.

© 2017 The Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine Purpose: This study aims to examine the impact of a parental notification (PN) requirement on the frequency, timing, and out-of-state travel of minors seeking abortion, as well as changes in who minors involve in their decision, support received, and decision certainty. Methods: We analyzed administrative and medical records of 1,577 women obtaining an abortion before and after implementation of a PN requirement at one Illinois facility. Using multivariate regression within a difference-in-differences framework, we quantified changes in the number and timing of women seeking care, frequency of parental awareness and support, travel from out-of-state, decision certainty, and anticipated coping among minors 17 years and below compared with young adults (YAs) aged 18–20 years. Results: A smaller proportion of abortions to women ages 20 years and under post-law were among minors (39%–33%, p =.017). Some states and police agencies require youth to consult with parents before or during interrogation by police, yet these policies rely on the untested assumption that parents themselves are knowledgeable about police interrogation practices and youths’ rights. This study assessed knowledge of, and attitudes about, juvenile interrogations in a sample of parents (N = 294) recruited from urban locales. On average, parents correctly answered fewer than half of the questions about juvenile interrogation practices; knowledge about parental notification procedures was especially poor. At the same time, parents strongly endorsed youths’ rights to support (including support from parents) during police questioning contexts and only moderately endorsed youths’ decision-making autonomy, even for older youth who are legally adults.

BACKGROUND Urban adolescent and young adult women often require adult support throughout their transition to adulthood particularly regarding seeking healthcare. While confidentiality is crucial feature of care delivery, successful adherence to treatment can be multi-factorial. The purpose of this study is to determine factors associated with parental notification and engagement in self-care of young women diagnosed with Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). METHODS This study utilizes data from 187 participants in the Technology Enhanced Community Health Nursing (TECH-N) study, a randomized controlled trial of an intervention to prevent recurrent STIs after a diagnosis of mild-moderate PID. Participants were recruited from pediatric ambulatory settings provided baseline demographic, reproductive history, and perceived social support using an audio computerized self-interview at baseline and parental notification collected during a two-week follow-up interview, served as the primary outcome. RESULTS Sixty-five percent of participants informed a parent of their PID diagnosis, 74% of whom reported receiving supportive care. Participants who reported a higher sense of responsibility to others were 17% less likely to inform a parent of their diagnosis. CONCLUSION Most urban young women with PID notify parents of their diagnosis and obtain support for self-management in the outpatient setting. While autonomy is a critical milestone for transition to young adulthood, these data suggest that proactive youth-managed parental engagement may be an underutilized resource for young women diagnosed with PID.

School-based body mass index screenings (SBMIS) have been controversial. We aimed to determine if parents would indicate improved utility with SBMIS when the report included parent education and whether parental intent to modify obesity risk factors would vary with report type or child weight.A cluster-controlled trial was conducted with 31 elementary schools randomized to distribute a standard SBMIS report or the standard report plus education (SBMIS+). A random subsample of parents completed a mailed survey (731 SBMIS, 738 SBMIS+). Using a two-stage cluster sampling design, logistic regression models with school-level random effect were used to assess differences between conditions and by weight category.Parents in the SBMIS+ condition vs. the standard condition were more likely to indicate that the report provided useful information (not significant) and an intent to help their child get enough sleep (p 0.001). Parents of children who were overweight or obese were less likely than parents of children who were not to indicate that the report provided useful information about their child's weight status (p 0.001) or access to resources (p 0.05). However, these parents were more likely to plan a visit to healthcare provider (p 0.001) and to intend to limit sugar-sweetened beverages (p 0.05).Parental education can enhance the utility of the SBMIS report and parental intention to modify at least one obesity risk factor. SBMIS reports prompted parents of children with overweight and obesity to seek clinical care and limit sugar-sweetened drinks.

Aim To investigate the demographic, social, familial environmental and medical characteristics of women under 18 years having recourse to elective abortion (EA). Methods cross-sectional observational study from 01/02/2015 to 01/02/2016. Results 2626 EA were performed during study period and 210 (8%) minor women were identified. 90 (43%) were included. Mean patient age was 16 (15.5;17.0) years. Among them, 58 (65%) had been in a relationship >6 months. Parents of minor was separated in 48% of cases. Gestational age mean at pre-abortion consultation was 48.0(+/-8.4) and 45 (50%) had no contraception before EA. It was her own choice for 85 (93%) minors and main motivation for asking EA was “young age” or “studies”. Minors was accompanied by mother in 47% of cases. Conclusion Women under 18 with unplanned pregnancies are more likely to come from single-parent families, have a shorter schooling, and a worse relationship with their parents. Although the decision was often taken on their own, the role of the accompanying adult seems to be crucial for teenagers. Their partner is also a source of support. Sexual education is still important to enhance knowledge about the law and the accessibility to EA.

Bullying is prevalent in our culture and can be recognizable through a competitive, capitalistic economy and a dominance hierarchy. Based on dominance, bullying continues to be a problem in our public schools as witnessed through nationally televised stories in Colorado (Columbine), Vermont (Ryan Halligan), and Missouri (Megan Meier), to name a few. Therefore, it is important to analyze legislation seeking to eliminate bullying in our schools. This project intends to analyze Texas House Bill 1942 (HB 1942). In Texas, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that 19.1 percent of students were bullied on school property and 13.8 percent of students were bullied electronically. In 2011, the 82nd Texas Legislature passed the first antibullying measure. With the passage of Texas HB 1942, the state sought to define acts of bullying, create stronger parental notification requirements, and increase accountability. Overall, results indicate that Texas HB 1942 provides adequate guidance for school districts to establish antibullying policies. However, no specific method for measuring effectiveness of the legislation was established. Purpose To describe the impact of the Illinois Parental Notification of Abortion Act on minors presenting for first-trimester abortion at an urban clinic in Chicago, Illinois. Methods Descriptive, retrospective review looked at minors obtaining a first-trimester abortion at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital Reproductive Health Services during the 12 months prior (August 15, 2012–August 14, 2013) and after (August 15, 2013–August 14, 2014) the Illinois Parental Notification Act was in effect. Young women, ages 18–21 years, unaffected by the law, served as the control group. Results Before the law, 320 minors of a total of 5,505 patients (5.8%) obtained a first-trimester abortion and after the law went into effect, 311 minors of a total of 6,311 patients (4.9%) obtained an abortion. This constituted a 2.8% decrease in procedures among minors before and after the law went into effect ( p = .003). However, this decrease was not significant when compared to an 8.8% growth in procedures among the control group, ages 18–21 years ( p = .079). Among minors, there was no difference in race/ethnicity, age, and mean gestational age at the time of abortion before and after the law ( p = .189, p = .116, and p = .961). There was a trend toward a larger decline in the youngest minors, aged 12–15 years and in those with at least one prior abortion. Conclusions The impact of a parental notification law on minors at an urban, public clinic is unclear. The 3% decrease warrants further study of both teen pregnancy rates and legislative barriers to minors' abortion access.

In Volume 32, Issue 5 of this journal, Colman, Dee, and Joyce (CDJ) used data from the National Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (NYRBS) and found that parental involvement (PI) laws had no effect on the probability that minors abstain from sex or use contraception. We re-examine this question, augmenting the NYRBS with data from the State Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (SYRBS), and use a variety of identification strategies to control for state-level time-varying unmeasured heterogeneity. Consistent with CDJ, we find that PI laws have no effect on minor teen females' abstinence decisions. However, when we exploit additional state policy variation unavailable to CDJ and use non-minor teens as a within-state control group, we find evidence to suggest that PI laws are associated with an increase in the probability that sexually active minor teen females use birth control.

BACKGROUND: Schools across the nation are increasingly implementing suicide prevention programs that involve training school staff and connecting students and their families to appropriate services. However, little is known about how parents are engaged in such efforts. METHODS: This qualitative study examined school staff perspectives on parent involvement in the implementation of a district-wide suicide prevention program by analyzing focus group and interview data gathered on the program implementation processes. Participants included middle school teachers, administrators, and other school personnel. RESULTS: Study results revealed that in the immediate wake of a crisis or concern about suicide, school staff routinely contacted parents. However, substantial barriers prevent some students from receiving needed follow-up care (eg, lack of consistent follow-up, financial strain, parental stress, availability of appropriate services). Despite these challenges, school staff identified strategies that could better support parents before, during, and after the crisis. In particular, school-based services increased the success of mental health referrals. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that systematic postcrisis follow-up procedures are needed to improve the likelihood that students and families receive ongoing support. In particular, school-based services and home visits, training and outreach for parents, and formal training for school mental health staff on parent engagement may be beneficial in this context. Objectives: Cochlear implantation is a widely accepted and effective surgical method used to treat severe hearing loss. What's more, it affects the lives of both cochlear implanted children and their parents. This study aims to compare cochlear-implanted children (CIC) and their parents with healthy counterparts and their parents in terms of the quality of life (QOL) and parental care burden (CB). Methods: This study was conducted between February and December 2018 in Turkey after receiving approval from the ethics committee. The Case Group included 34 children between 3 and 7 years of age, who received a CI due to bilateral prelingual sensorineural hearing loss and were using it for at least 1 year, and their parents. The Control Group consisted of 68 healthy children and their parents. The data were collected using disease and age-specific quality of life scales and burden interview. Normally distributed variables were analysed using parametric tests while non-normally distributed variables were analysed using nonparametric tests. The odds ratio (OR) and confidence interval (95%) were also calculated. Results were evaluated at significance level of p < 0.05. Results: The mean age of the children and their parents in both Case and Control Groups was 63.9 months and 33.8 years, and 61.3 months and 36.6 years, respectively. There was a positive correlation between PPQ social relationship subscale and KINDL subscale scores in CIC (p < 0.05). The Case Group obtained lower mean scores from the subscales of KINDL and WHOQOL-BREF (p < 0.001, p < 0.01). The ZBI mean scores of the parents in Case and Control Groups were 43.18 and 27.54, respectively (p = 0.000). Conclusion: It was determined that the QOL of the Case Group was lower than QOL of the Control Group, while the CB of the Case Group was higher than CB of the Control Group. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

Background By law, the provision of medical treatment to minors in the State of Israel is conditional upon the consent of their parents. In 2004, the Head of the Medical Administration Unit in the Ministry of Health issued Circular No. 4/2004 regarding the treatment of un-accompanied minors in primary care clinics. This circular aims to expand on the law, and permits the treatment of certain minors without parental attendance or consent. The circular does indicate that parents should be notified of the treatment retroactively, and provides cases in which it is possible to avoid notification altogether. The objectives of this study were: (a) to examine the scope of treatment of unaccompanied minors in primary care clinics; (b) to examine caregivers’ knowledge of the provisions of the law and of the circular; and (c) to examine the implementation of the law’s and the circular’s provisions relating to the treatment of unaccompanied minors in primary care clinics in the community. Methods In a cross-sectional study, we surveyed 158 doctors and nurses from primary care clinics of the Haifa and Galilee districts of “Clalit Health Services”. Respondents were selected via a snowball method, with attention to ensuring a heterogeneous clientele and geographic dispersion. Results Treatment seeking by unaccompanied minors is an existing and even widespread phenomenon. The vast majority of unaccompanied minors were in effect treated without parental consent. The main reason for minors’ solitary treatment seeking was parents being busy. In 40% of the cases, where minors were treated without the presence and consent of their parents – parents were not notified of the fact. None of the respondents correctly answered all questions regarding the relevant provisions of the law and circular, and only 10% answered all the questions regarding the circular’s parental notification requirements. Conclusions The Israeli legal arrangement, pertaining to the provision of treatment to minors without the consent of their parents, is vague, unclear to medical and nursing practitioners and limited in terms of the needs of the minors themselves, as well as the needs of the medical system. There is a need for methodical and coherent regulatory thinking on the subject, as well as more thorough education of both nurses and physicians, in order to ensure the rights and interests of minors as well as the rights of their parents. Purpose Like many states, Texas requires parental consent for adolescents under 18 to access abortion care. Adolescents who cannot obtain parental consent can try to obtain a judicial bypass of parental consent through the court system. Little is known about adolescents’ experiences with the judicial bypass process. Working with Jane's Due Process, an organization providing legal representation for adolescents, we explored adolescents’ experiences with the judicial bypass process. Methods We conducted phone interviews with 20 adolescents, 16–19 years old in Texas between September and December 2016 about their experiences trying to obtain a judicial bypass. Data analysis included inductive and deductive coding based on theories about engaging with the court system and stigma regarding abortion and adolescent sexuality. Results In addition to unpredictability and logistic burdens such as finding time away from school and arranging transportation, participants described the bypass process as “intimidating” and “scary” and described judges and guardians-ad-litem who shamed them, “preached” at them, and discredited evidence of their maturity. Data suggest adolescents internalize stigma and trauma they experienced through rationalizing both the need for the bypass process and disrespectful treatment by authority figures. Conclusions We found the bypass process functions as a form of punishment and allows state actors to humiliate adolescents for their personal decisions. The bypass process was implemented to protect adolescents from alleged negative emotional consequences of abortion, yet our results suggest the bypass process itself causes emotional harm through unpredictability and humiliation. Despite participants’ resilience, the process may have negative consequences for adolescent health.

Patient portals enable people to access their health information electronically, but concerns about confidentiality and privacy breaches, particularly for young people, may be impeding portal adoption in New Zealand. This paper considers the legal and ethical framework relating to health information privacy and informed consent in New Zealand, and proposes an approach to implementing patient portals for young people. Shared portal access (where both a young person and their parent or guardian have access to the young person’s portal) may be appropriate for young children whose parents or guardians are responsible for their health care. However, as children mature and their capacity to make health care decisions increases, general practitioners will need to consider shifting to independent portal access by competent young people. The circumstances of each young person, including their best interests and rights, cultural needs and their views on information disclosure should be taken into account.

Parental notification policies and practices have been found to reduce alcohol and drug use at universities in the United States of America. This study examined the status of parental notification policy and practice at a faith-based private university in Nigeria for students involved with alcohol use. The study revealed that the absence of a documented policy on procedure on parental notification led to inconsistencies in the informal notification practices. Parents, staff and students expressed varied degrees of frustration at the lack of proper parental notification practices. Factors such as mode of notification, timing and purpose of notification, clarification of familial relationships between students and parents–guardian emerged as key indicators. The study recommends that Nigeria as a nation contextualize the American Higher Education Reauthorization Act of 1998 and enact legislation on parental notification that will inform the development of a parental notification policy in Nigerian universities.

Study Objective Minor adolescent patients have a legal right to access certain medical services confidentially without parental consent or notification. We sought to assess physicians' knowledge of these laws, attitudes around the provision of confidential care to minors, and barriers to providing confidential care. Design An anonymous online survey was sent to physicians in the Departments of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine-Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, and Pediatrics at the University of Michigan. Results Response rate was 40% (259/650). The majority of physicians felt comfortable addressing sexual health, mental health, and substance use with adolescent patients. On average, physicians answered just over half of the legal knowledge questions correctly (mean 56.6% ± 16.7%). The majority of physicians approved of laws allowing minors to consent for confidential care (90.8% ± 1.7% approval), while substantially fewer (45.1% ± 4.5%) approved of laws allowing parental notification of this care at the physician's discretion. Most physicians agreed that assured access to confidential care should be a right for adolescents. After taking the survey most physicians (76.6%) felt they needed additional training on confidentiality laws. The provision of confidential care to minors was perceived to be most inhibited by insurance issues, parental concerns/relationships with the family, and issues with the electronic medical record. Conclusions Physicians are comfortable discussing sensitive issues with adolescents and generally approve of minor consent laws, but lack knowledge about what services a minor can access confidentially. Further research is needed to assess best methods to educate physicians about minors' legal rights to confidential healthcare services.

Professional guidelines encourage physicians to provide children with as much information regarding their health as deemed developmentally and emotionally appropriate. However, empirical research indicates that in clinical practice, an open discussion with children about cancer is often lacking. This study explores impeding factors to and possible strategies for open communication of cancer diagnosis to children from the perspectives of parents and physicians.; Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 parents of children with cancer and 10 treating oncologists. The patient sample was obtained from three pediatric units in Romania. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and interpreted using thematic analysis. Inductive open-coding procedures identified participants' accounts regarding their experiences with cancer diagnosis and treatment. Final themes were selected by grouping codes that formed a pattern in the data.; An interplay of mainly three different factors-information overload and emotional turmoil, lack of knowledge and skills for disclosing the diagnosis, and assumptions about burdening the child when discussing cancer-restricted parent-patient communication and subsequently affected physician-patient exchanges. Oncologists recommended open communication at diagnosis, but left the final decision to the parents. They adapted their communication style with patients to parents' preference.; Although physicians need to respect the wishes of children's legal representatives, they also have a duty to promote patients' best interests. We recommend that physicians employ a proactive stance in ensuring that children with cancer are appropriately informed about their diagnosis. Purpose Distracted driving is the largest increasing cause of motor vehicle crash deaths in the U.S prompting the need for interventions. Methods/approach We conducted an 8 week pilot randomised control trial of default technology configurations that block cellphone use while driving. We enrolled licensed teens who admitted to texting while driving. Participants installed a windshield-mounted device that could block phone use while driving. Data on cellphone use, vehicle speed, and trip time were collected. Participants completed a 4 week baseline monitoring phase followed by a 4 week intervention phase in one of four arms: 1) monitoring only; 2) ‘opt-in’ blocking; 3) ‘opt-out’ blocking; and 4) ‘opt-out’ blocking with parental notification. Using generalised linear models, we measured the difference in phone unlocks and minutes of phone use per hour of driving between the intervention and baseline periods relative to the monitor only arm. Results We enrolled 32 participants; 8 randomised to each arm. During the baseline period the teen drivers had 3.3 (IQR 1.5–5.4) unlocks per hour and 5.89 min (SD 5.88) of non-call phone use per hour of driving. There were less minutes of phone use per hour in the opt-out blocking arm (−2.06 95%; CI: −4.07,–0.09) and opt-out blocking with notification arm (−1.92; 95%: CI; −3.90, 0.44). The effect on unlocks per hour was less strong with −0.71 (95% CI: −2.24. 1.10) in the opt-out blocking arm and −0.43 (95% CI: −1.96, 1.10) in the opt-out blocking with notification arm. Conclusions Opt-out activation of cellphone blocking appears promising for reducing the amount of time the phone is unlocked while driving, but additional strategies may be needed to reduce handheld engagement among teen drivers. Significance and Contributions to Injury and Violence Prevention Science We demonstrated the feasibility of a novel approach for testing scalable smartphone-based interventions for reducing cellphone use while driving.

Objectives To explore parental attitudes regarding the return and disclosure of research findings in pediatric cancer trials over time. Study design Two surveys were set up to evaluate the stability of parental attitudes. One survey was carried out among 581 parents whose child was diagnosed recently (response rate, 53.5%). A second, population-based survey was set up with a time interval of 4 years between first cancer diagnosis and survey in which 1465 parents were included (response rate, 55.1%). Results Almost all surveyed parents stated a parental right to receive aggregate research results. Fifty-five percent of the parents who recently participated in trials and 62% of those asked after a multiyear time interval thought that disclosure of individual findings is in any case necessary (P = .0034). The respondents wanted to restrict the duty to disclose study results to the child according to their notion of the child's well-being, composed of child's maturity, impairment of the parent–child relationship, and the quality of the results. Conclusions Attitudes of parents regarding the return of research findings change over time. Shortly after diagnosis, parents are mainly interested in aggregate findings. Interest in individual findings appeared to increase as more time elapsed between cancer diagnosis and survey.

Obstetricians need to be aware of potential legal changes which may impact the doctor-patient relationship in surrogacy cases. Presently, English law recognises the surrogate as the mother. After giving birth, she may hand over the baby. The commissioning couple then apply for Parental Orders and become legal parents if the conditions in the Surrogacy Arrangements Act 1985 are met. We compile data on the locations of abortion providers and enforcement of parental involvement laws to document dramatic increases in the distances minors must travel if they wish to obtain an abortion without involving a parent or judge: from 58 miles in 1992 to 454 in 2016. Using both double and triple-difference estimation strategies, we estimate the effects of parental involvement laws, allowing them to vary with the distances minors might travel to avoid them. Our results confirm previous findings that parental involvement laws did not increase teen births in the 1980s, and provide new evidence that in more recent decades they have increased teen birth by an average of 3 percent. The estimated effects are increasing in avoidance distance to the point that a confidential abortion is more than a day's drive away, and also are substantially larger in the poorest quartile of counties.

A difficult task for politicians who want to fight injustice without doing wrong themselves is identifying where it is permissible to vote for and/or promote so-called “imperfect laws” which somewhat improve existing unjust legal situations but leave closely related injustices intact. One approach is to seek a “selective ban” on some injustices which are politically preventable. This approach is acceptable at least in principle, unlike the approach of “regulation”—i.e., permitting or instructing others to do, or prepare to do, the unjust act in specified ways. The latter necessarily involves us in formal cooperation with evil: wrongly intending that others choose wrongly; for example, that abortion doctors deliberately prepare for abortion, albeit in ways that make an abortion less risky or less likely. In relation to parental consent or parental notification, and to pregnancy counselling and provision of information to pregnant women, while there may be ways of requiring these without complicity in others’ wrongful choices, this is at least more difficult than is often recognised. There can also be problems of principle in seeking consensus with fellow-legislators who may positively intend and even promote the continuation of remaining injustices even as they collaborate with more consistent reformers in passing laws which mitigate injustice overall.
