Abstract: We investigate the performance of Opticks, an NVIDIA OptiX API 7.5 GPU-accelerated photon propagation compared with a single-threaded Geant4 simulation. We compare the simulations using an improved model of the NEXT-CRAB-0 gaseous time projection chamber. Performance results suggest that Opticks improves simulation speeds by between $58.47\pm{0.02}$ and $181.39\pm{0.28}$ times relative to a CPU-only Geant4 simulation and these results vary between different types of GPU and CPU. A detailed comparison shows that the number of detected photons, along with their times and wavelengths, are in good agreement between Opticks and Geant4., Comment: 12 pages, 8 Figures

Abstract: If neutrinoless double beta decay is discovered, the next natural step would be understanding the lepton number violating physics responsible for it. Several alternatives exist beyond the exchange of light neutrinos. Some of these mechanisms can be distinguished by measuring phase-space observables, namely the opening angle $\cos\theta$ among the two decay electrons, and the electron energy spectra, $T_1$ and $T_2$. In this work, we study the statistical accuracy and precision in measuring these kinematic observables in a future xenon gas detector with the added capability to precisely locate the decay vertex. For realistic detector conditions (a gas pressure of 10 bar and spatial resolution of 4 mm), we find that the average $\overline{\cos\theta}$ and $\overline{T_1}$ values can be reconstructed with a precision of 0.19 and 110 keV, respectively, assuming that only 10 neutrinoless double beta decay events are detected., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: This work explores the combination of liquid xenon as a scintillating medium and silicon photomultipliers as a readout in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) for enhanced Time-Of-Flight resolution. We present the results of our first prototype optimized to maximize light collection using high-PDE, VUV-sensitive sensors and to minimize time fluctuations. We report a coincidence time resolution of 281 $\pm$ 2 ps FWHM, obtained using a $^{22}$Na calibration source. This result is competitive with the current state-of-the-art PET scanners and represents a significant step forward in the development of liquid xenon as a viable alternative to conventional scintillators in PET technology.

Abstract: The NEXT-White detector, a high-pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber, demonstrated the excellence of this technology for future neutrinoless double beta decay searches using photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) to measure energy and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to extract topology information. This analysis uses $^{83m}\text{Kr}$ data from the NEXT-White detector to measure and understand the energy resolution that can be obtained with the SiPMs, rather than with PMTs. The energy resolution obtained of (10.9 $\pm$ 0.6) $\%$, full-width half-maximum, is slightly larger than predicted based on the photon statistics resulting from very low light detection coverage of the SiPM plane in the NEXT-White detector. The difference in the predicted and measured resolution is attributed to poor corrections, which are expected to be improved with larger statistics. Furthermore, the noise of the SiPMs is shown to not be a dominant factor in the energy resolution and may be negligible when noise subtraction is applied appropriately, for high-energy events or larger SiPM coverage detectors. These results, which are extrapolated to estimate the response of large coverage SiPM planes, are promising for the development of future, SiPM-only, readout planes that can offer imaging and achieve similar energy resolution to that previously demonstrated with PMTs.

Abstract: The imaging of individual Ba$^{2+}$ ions in high pressure xenon gas is one possible way to attain background-free sensitivity to neutrinoless double beta decay and hence establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. In this paper we demonstrate selective single Ba$^{2+}$ ion imaging inside a high-pressure xenon gas environment. Ba$^{2+}$ ions chelated with molecular chemosensors are resolved at the gas-solid interface using a diffraction-limited imaging system with scan area of 1$\times$1~cm$^2$ located inside 10~bar of xenon gas. This new form of microscopy represents an important enabling step in the development of barium tagging for neutrinoless double beta decay searches in $^{136}$Xe, as well as a new tool for studying the photophysics of fluorescent molecules and chemosensors at the solid-gas interface.

6. Measurement of the scintillation resolution in liquid xenon and its impact for future segmented calorimeters

Abstract: We report on a new measurement of the energy resolution that can be attained in liquid xenon when recording only the scintillation light. Our setup is optimised to maximise light collection, and uses state-of-the-art, high-PDE, VUV-sensitive silicon photomultipliers. We find a value of 4.2% +- 0.2% FWHM at 511 keV, a result much better than previous measurements and close to the Poissonian resolution that we expect in our setup (5.4% +- 0.8% FWHM at 511 keV). Our results are compatible with a null value of the intrinsic energy resolution in liquid xenon, with an upper bound of 0.4% FWHM at 95% CL at 511 keV, to be compared with 3--4% FWHM in the same region found by theoretical estimations which have been standing for the last twenty years. Our work opens new possibilities for apparatus based on liquid xenon and using scintillation only. In particular it suggests that modular scintillation detectors using liquid xenon can be very competitive as building blocks in segmented calorimeters, with applications to nuclear and particle physics as well as Positron Emission Tomography technology.

Abstract: New detector approaches in Positron Emission Tomography imaging will play an important role in reducing costs, lowering administered radiation doses, and improving overall performance. PETALO employs liquid xenon as the active scintillating medium and UV-sensitive silicon photomultipliers for scintillation readout. The scintillation time in liquid xenon is fast enough to register time-of-flight information for each detected coincidence, and sufficient scintillation is produced with low enough fluctuations to obtain good energy resolution. The present simulation study examines a full-body-sized PETALO detector and evaluates its potential performance in PET image reconstruction.

13. Video educativo: Herramienta de mejora del rendimiento académico en estudiantes de una universidad chilena

Abstract: Introduction: Educational videos have multiple benefits for university students’ learning process, allowing them to acquire interactively new knowledge. Objective: To analyze the academic performance of undergraduate students in Obstetrics and Childcare at the University of Chile using two learning tools: educational video or summary document, in 2022. Material and method: 16 second-year undergraduate students in Obstetrics and childcare at a Chilean university were the sample of experimental study. They participated in an educational intervention of 3 online sessions on the topics of the pelvis and childbirth mechanisms. The participants were divided into two groups by simple randomization, the experimental group that watched two educational videos and the control group that read a summary document made based on both videos. The academic performance obtained before and after viewing the educational material was analyzed, and the level of satisfaction was measured. Results: There are no significant differences in the academic performance of the experimental and control groups before and after the intervention. There are no significant differences in the level of satisfaction of the experimental and control groups at the end of the intervention. Conclusions: The use of educational videos generates the same impact as reading a summary document in obstetrics students, that is, it is evident that learning is the same regardless of the methodology used. However, a greater number of participants is required to observe changes in the results obtained., Introducción: Los videos educativos poseen múltiples beneficios en el aprendizaje de los y las estudiantes, permitiéndoles adquirir nuevos conocimientos de manera interactiva. Objetivo: Analizar el rendimiento académico de estudiantes de la carrera de Obstetricia y Puericultura de la Universidad de Chile utilizando dos herramientas de aprendizaje: video educativo o documento resumen, en 2022. Material y método: Estudio experimental con 16 estudiantes de segundo año de la carrera de Obstetricia y puericultura de una universidad chilena, que participaron de una intervención educativa de 3 sesiones de modalidad online sobre las temáticas de pelvis y mecanismos del parto. Los y las participantes se dividieron en dos grupos por aleatorización simple, el grupo experimental que observó dos videos educativos y el grupo control que realizó la lectura de un documento resumen confeccionado en base a ambos videos. Se analizó el rendimiento académico obtenido antes y después de la visualización del material educativo, y se midió el nivel de satisfacción. Resultados: No existen diferencias significativas en el rendimiento académico del grupo experimental y control antes y después de la intervención. No existen diferencias significativas en el nivel de satisfacción del grupo experimental y control al finalizar la intervención. Conclusiones: El uso de videos educativos generan el mismo impacto que la lectura de un documento resumen en estudiantes de obstetricia, es decir, se evidencia que el aprendizaje es el mismo independientemente de la metodología utilizada. Abstract: We present the results of a long M87 monitoring campaign in very high energy $\gamma$-rays with the MAGIC-I Cherenkov telescope. We aim to model the persistent non-thermal jet emission by monitoring and characterizing the very high energy $\gamma$-ray emission of M87 during a low state. A total of 150\,h of data were taken between 2005 and 2007 with the single MAGIC-I telescope, out of which 128.6\,h survived the data quality selection. We also collected data in the X-ray and \textit{Fermi}--LAT bands from the literature (partially contemporaneous). No flaring activity was found during the campaign. The source was found to be in a persistent low-emission state, which was at a confidence level of $7\sigma$. We present the spectrum between 100\,GeV and 2\,TeV, which is consistent with a simple power law with a photon index $\Gamma=2.21\pm0.21$ and a flux normalization at 300\,GeV of $(7.7\pm1.3) \times 10^{-8}$ TeV$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ m$^{-2}$. The extrapolation of the MAGIC spectrum into the GeV energy range matches the previously published \textit{Fermi}--LAT spectrum well, covering a combined energy range of four orders of magnitude with the same spectral index. Abstract: The very high energy (VHE) \gamma-ray source HESS J0632+057 has recently been confirmed to be a \gamma-ray binary. The optical counterpart is the Be star MWC 148, and a compact object of unknown nature orbits it every ~321 d with a high eccentricity of ~0.8. We monitored HESS J0632+057 with the stereoscopic MAGIC telescopes from 2010 October to 2011 March and detected significant VHE \gamma-ray emission during 2011 February, when the system exhibited an X-ray outburst. We find no \gamma-ray signal in the other observation periods when the system did not show increased X-ray flux. Thus HESS J0632+057 exhibits \gamma-ray variability on timescales of the order of one to two months possibly linked to the X-ray outburst that takes place about 100 days after the periastron passage. Furthermore our measurements provide for the first time the \gamma-ray spectrum down to about 140 GeV and indicate no turnover of the spectrum at low energies. We compare the properties of HESS J0632+057 with the similar \gamma-ray binary LS I +61 303, and discuss on the possible origin of the multi-wavelength emission of the source, Comment: 6 pages and 3 figures, submitted, corresponding authors T. Abstract: Context. We present the discovery of very high energy (VHE, E > 100GeV) gamma-ray emission from the BL Lac object 1ES 1215+303 by the MAGIC telescopes and simultaneous multi-wavelength data in a broad energy range from radio to gamma-rays. Aims. We study the VHE gamma-ray emission from 1ES 1215+303 and its relation to the emissions in other wavelengths. Methods. Triggered by an optical outburst, MAGIC observed the source in January-February 2011 for 20.3 hrs. The target was monitored in the optical R-band by the KVA telescope that also performed optical polarization measurements. We triggered target of opportunity observations with the Swift satellite and obtained simultaneous and quasi-simultaneous data from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and from the Mets\"ahovi radio telescope. We also present the analysis of older MAGIC data taken in 2010. Results. The MAGIC observations of 1ES 1215+303 carried out in January-February 2011 resulted in the first detection of the source at VHE with a statistical significance of 9.4 sigma. Simultaneously, the source was observed in a high optical and X-ray state. In 2010 the source was observed in a lower state in optical, X-ray, and VHE, while the GeV gamma-ray flux and the radio flux were comparable in 2010 and 2011. Abstract: The W51 complex hosts the supernova remnant W51C which is known to interact with the molecular clouds in the star forming region W51B. In addition, a possible pulsar wind nebula CXO J192318.5+140305 was found likely associated with the supernova remnant. Gamma-ray emission from this region was discovered by Fermi/LAT (between 0.2 and 50 GeV) and H.E.S.S. (>1 TeV). The spatial distribution of the events could not be used to pinpoint the location of the emission among the pulsar wind nebula, the supernova remnant shell and/or the molecular cloud. However, the modeling of the spectral energy distribution presented by the Fermi/LAT collaboration suggests a hadronic emission mechanism. We performed observations of the W51 complex with the MAGIC telescopes for more than 50 hours. The good angular resolution in the medium (few hundred GeV) to high (above 1 TeV) energies allow us to perform morphological studies. We detect an extended emission of very-high-energy gamma rays, with a significance of 11 standard deviations. We extend the spectrum from the highest Fermi/LAT energies to \sim 5 TeV and find that it follows a single power law with an index of 2.58 \pm 0.07stat \pm 0.22syst . The main part of the emission coincides with the shocked cloud region, while we find a feature extending towards the pulsar wind nebula. The possible contribution of the pulsar wind nebula, assuming a point-like source, shows no dependence on energy and it is about 20% of the overall emission. The broad band spectral energy distribution can be explained with a hadronic model that implies proton acceleration above 100 TeV. This result, together with the morphology of the source, tentatively suggests that we observe ongoing acceleration of ions in the interaction zone between supernova remnant and cloud. Abstract: We study the non-thermal jet emission of the BL Lac object B3 2247+381 during a high optical state. The MAGIC telescopes observed the source during 13 nights between September 30th and October 30th 2010, collecting a total of 14.2 hours of good quality very high energy (VHE) $\gamma$-ray data. Simultaneous multiwavelength data was obtained with X-ray observations by the Swift satellite and optical R-band observations at the KVA-telescope. We also use high energy $\gamma$-ray (HE, 0.1 GeV-100 GeV) data from the Fermi satellite. The BL Lac object B3 2247+381 (z=0.119) was detected, for the first time, at VHE $\gamma$-rays at a statistical significance of 5.6 $\sigma$. A soft VHE spectrum with a photon index of -3.2 $\pm$ 0.6 was determined. No significant short term flux variations were found. Abstract: We report on the detection of very-high energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from NGC 1275, the central radio galaxy of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. The source has been detected by the MAGIC telescopes with a statistical significance of 6.6 sigma above 100 GeV in 46 hr of stereo observations carried out between August 2010 and February 2011. The measured differential energy spectrum between 70 GeV and 500 GeV can be described by a power law with a steep spectral index of \Gamma=-4.1+/-0.7stat+/-0.3syst, and the average flux above 100 GeV is F_{gamma}=(1.3+/-0.2stat+/-0.3syst) x 10^-11 cm^-2 s^-1. These results, combined with the power-law spectrum measured in the first two years of observations by the Fermi-LAT above 100 MeV, with a spectral index of Gamma ~ -2.1, strongly suggest the presence of a break or cut-off around tens of GeV in the NGC 1275 spectrum. The light curve of the source above 100 GeV does not show hints of variability on a month time scale. Finally, we report on the nondetection in the present data of the radio galaxy IC 310, previously discovered by the Fermi-LAT and MAGIC. The derived flux upper limit F^{U.L.}_{gamma} (>300 GeV)=1.2 x 10^-12 cm^-2 s^-1 is a factor ~ 3 lower than the mean flux measured by MAGIC between October 2009 and February 2010, thus confirming the year time-scale variability of the source at VHE., Comment: Corresponding authors are S. Abstract: We present very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) {\gamma}-ray observations of the {\gamma}-ray binary system LS I+61 303 obtained with the MAGIC stereo system between 2009 October and 2010 January. We detect a 6.3{\sigma} {\gamma}-ray signal above 400 GeV in the combined data set. The integral flux above an energy of 300 GeV is F(E>300 GeV)=(1.4 +- 0.3stat +- 0.4syst) * 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1}, which corresponds to about 1.3% of the Crab Nebula flux in the same energy range. The orbit-averaged flux of LS I +61 303 in the orbital phase interval 0.6--0.7, where a maximum of the TeV flux is expected, is lower by almost an order of magnitude compared to our previous measurements between 2005 September and 2008 January. This provides evidence for a new low emission state in LS I +61 303. Abstract: Galaxy clusters are being assembled today in the most energetic phase of hierarchical structure formation which manifests itself in powerful shocks that contribute to a substantial energy density of cosmic rays (CRs). Hence, clusters are expected to be luminous gamma-ray emitters since they also act as energy reservoirs for additional CR sources, such as active galactic nuclei and supernova-driven galactic winds. To detect the gamma-ray emission from CR interactions with the ambient cluster gas, we conducted the deepest to date observational campaign targeting a galaxy cluster at very high-energy gamma-rays and observed the Perseus cluster with the MAGIC Cherenkov telescopes for a total of ~85 hr of effective observing time. This campaign resulted in the detection of the central radio galaxy NGC 1275 at energies E > 100 GeV with a very steep energy spectrum. Here, we restrict our analysis to energies E > 630 GeV and detect no significant gamma-ray excess. This constrains the average CR-to-thermal pressure ratio to be <= 1-2%, depending on assumptions and the model for CR emission. Comparing these gamma-ray upper limits to predictions from cosmological cluster simulations that include CRs constrains the maximum CR acceleration efficiency at structure formation shocks to be < 50%. Alternatively, this may argue for non-negligible CR transport processes such as CR streaming and diffusion into the outer cluster regions. Finally, we derive lower limits on the magnetic field distribution assuming that the Perseus radio mini-halo is generated by secondary electrons/positrons that are created in hadronic CR interactions: assuming a spectrum of E^-2.2 around TeV energies as implied by cluster simulations, we limit the central magnetic field to be > 4-9 microG, depending on the rate of decline of the magnetic field strength toward larger radii., Comment: Corresponding authors are F. Abstract: Abridged: The giant radio galaxy M 87 with its proximity, famous jet, and very massive black hole provides a unique opportunity to investigate the origin of very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission generated in relativistic outflows and the surroundings of super-massive black holes. M 87 has been established as a VHE gamma-ray emitter since 2006. The VHE gamma-ray emission displays strong variability on timescales as short as a day. In this paper, results from a joint VHE monitoring campaign on M 87 by the MAGIC and VERITAS instruments in 2010 are reported. During the campaign, a flare at VHE was detected triggering further observations at VHE (H.E.S.S.), X-rays (Chandra), and radio (43 GHz VLBA). The excellent sampling of the VHE gamma-ray light curve enables one to derive a precise temporal characterization of the flare: the single, isolated flare is well described by a two-sided exponential function with significantly different flux rise and decay times. While the overall variability pattern of the 2010 flare appears somewhat different from that of previous VHE flares in 2005 and 2008, they share very similar timescales (~day), peak fluxes (Phi(>0.35 TeV) ~= (1-3) x 10^-11 ph cm^-2 s^-1), and VHE spectra. 43 GHz VLBA radio observations of the inner jet regions indicate no enhanced flux in 2010 in contrast to observations in 2008, where an increase of the radio flux of the innermost core regions coincided with a VHE flare. On the other hand, Chandra X-ray observations taken ~3 days after the peak of the VHE gamma-ray emission reveal an enhanced flux from the core. The long-term (2001-2010) multi-wavelength light curve of M 87, spanning from radio to VHE and including data from HST, LT, VLA and EVN, is used to further investigate the origin of the VHE gamma-ray emission. Abstract: MAGIC is a system of two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes sensitive above ~60 GeV, and located on the Canary Island of La Palma at the height of 2200 m.a.s.l. Since Autumn 2009 both telescopes are working together in stereoscopic mode. We use both Crab Nebula observations and Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the performance of the system. Advanced stereo analysis allows MAGIC to achieve a sensitivity better than 0.8% of the Crab Nebula flux in 50 h of observations in the medium energy range (around a few hundred GeV). At those energies the angular resolution is better than 0.07{\circ}, and the energy resolution is as good as 16%. Abstract: We use 73 h of stereoscopic data taken with the MAGIC telescopes to investigate the very high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission of the Crab pulsar. Our data show a highly significant pulsed signal in the energy range from 50 to 400 GeV in both the main pulse (P1) and the interpulse (P2) phase regions. We provide the widest spectra to date of the VHE components of both peaks, and these spectra extend to the energy range of satellite-borne observatories. The good resolution and background rejection of the stereoscopic MAGIC system allows us to cross-check the correctness of each spectral point of the pulsar by comparison with the corresponding (strong and well-known) Crab nebula flux. The spectra of both P1 and P2 are compatible with power laws with photon indices of 4.0 \pm 0.8 (P1) and 3.42 \pm 0.26 (P2), respectively, and the ratio P1/P2 between the photon counts of the two pulses is 0.54 \pm 0.12. The VHE emission can be understood as an additional component produced by the inverse Compton scattering of secondary and tertiary e\pm pairs on IR-UV photons., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: We report on the observation of $\gamma$-rays above 25\,GeV from the Crab pulsar (PSR B0532+21) using the MAGIC I telescope. Two data sets from observations during the winter period 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 are used. In order to discuss the spectral shape from 100\,MeV to 100\,GeV, one year of public {\it Fermi} Large Area Telescope ({\it Fermi}-LAT) data are also analyzed to complement the MAGIC data. The extrapolation of the exponential cutoff spectrum determined with the Fermi-LAT data is inconsistent with MAGIC measurements, which requires a modification of the standard pulsar emission models. In the energy region between 25 and 100\,GeV, the emission in the P1 phase (from -0.06 to 0.04, location of the main pulse) and the P2 phase (from 0.32 to 0.43, location of the interpulse) can be described by power laws with spectral indices of $-3.1 \pm 1.0_{stat} \pm 0.3_{syst}$ and $-3.5 \pm 0.5_{stat} \pm 0.3_{syst}$, respectively. Assuming an asymmetric Lorentzian for the pulse shape, the peak positions of the main pulse and the interpulse are estimated to be at phases $-0.009 \pm 0.007$ and $0.393 \pm 0.009$, while the full widths at half maximum are $0.025 \pm 0.008$ and $0.053 \pm 0.015$, respectively., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, published in Astrophysical Journal

Abstract: MAGIC is a system of two Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes located in the Canary island of La Palma. Since autumn 2009 both telescopes have been working together in stereoscopic mode, providing a significant improvement with respect to the previous single-telescope observations. We use observations of the Crab Nebula taken at low zenith angles to assess the performance of the MAGIC stereo system. The trigger threshold of the MAGIC telescopes is 50-60 GeV. Advanced stereo analysis techniques allow MAGIC to achieve a sensitivity as good as (0.76 +/- 0.03)% of the Crab Nebula flux in 50 h of observations above 290 GeV. The angular resolution at those energies is better than ~0.07 degree. Abstract: Context: The blazar Markarian 421 is one of the brightest TeV gamma-ray sources of the northern sky. From December 2007 until June 2008 it was intensively observed in the very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) band by the single-dish Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov telescope (MAGIC-I). Aims: We aimed to measure the physical parameters of the emitting region of the blazar jet during active states. Methods: We performed a dense monitoring of the source in VHE with MAGIC-I, and also collected complementary data in soft X-rays and optical-UV bands; then, we modeled the spectral energy distributions (SED) derived from simultaneous multi-wavelength data within the synchrotron self--compton (SSC) framework. Results: The source showed intense and prolonged gamma-ray activity during the whole period, with integral fluxes (E > 200 GeV) seldom below the level of the Crab Nebula, and up to 3.6 times this value. Eight datasets of simultaneous optical-UV (KVA, Swift/UVOT), soft X-ray (Swift/XRT) and MAGIC-I VHE data were obtained during different outburst phases. The data constrain the physical parameters of the jet, once the spectral energy distributions obtained are interpreted within the framework of a single-zone SSC leptonic model. Conclusions: The main outcome of the study is that within the homogeneous model high Doppler factors (40 <= delta <= 80) are needed to reproduce the observed SED; but this model cannot explain the observed short time-scale variability, while it can be argued that inhomogeneous models could allow for less extreme Doppler factors, more intense magnetic fields and shorter electron cooling times compatible with hour or sub-hour scale variability., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: The acceleration of particles up to GeV or higher energies in microquasars has been the subject of considerable theoretical and observational efforts in the past few years. Sco X-1 is a microquasar from which evidence of highly energetic particles in the jet has been found when it is in the so-called Horizontal Branch (HB), a state when the radio and hard X-ray fluxes are higher and a powerful relativistic jet is present. Here we present the first very high energy gamma-ray observations of Sco X-1 obtained with the MAGIC telescopes. An analysis of the whole dataset does not yield a significant signal, with 95% CL flux upper limits above 300 GeV at the level of 2.4x10^{-12} ph/cm^2/s. Simultaneous RXTE observations were conducted to search for TeV emission during particular X-ray states of the source. A selection of the gamma-ray data obtained during the HB based on the X-ray colors did not yield a signal either, with an upper limit of 3.4x10^{-12} ph/cm^2/s. These upper limits place a constraint on the maximum TeV luminosity to non-thermal X-ray luminosity of L_{VHE}/L_{ntX}<0.02, that can be related to a maximum TeV luminosity to jet power ratio of L_{VHE}/L_{j}<10^{-3}. Our upper limits indicate that the underlying high-energy emission physics in Sco X-1 must be inherently different from that of the hitherto detected gamma-ray binaries., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. Abstract: We report the results of the observation of the nearby satellite galaxy Segue 1 performed by the MAGIC-I ground-based gamma-ray telescope between November 2008 and March 2009 for a total of 43.2 hours. No significant gamma-ray emission was found above the background. Differential upper limits on the gamma-ray flux are derived assuming various power-law slopes for the possible emission spectrum. Integral upper limits are also calculated for several power-law spectra and for different energy thresholds. The values are of the order of 10^{-11} ph cm^{-2}$ s^{-1} above 100 GeV and 10^{-12} ph cm^{-2} s^{-1} above 200 GeV. Segue 1 is currently considered one of the most interesting targets for indirect dark matter searches. In these terms, the upper limits have been also interpreted in the context of annihilating dark matter particles. For such purpose, we performed a grid scan over a reasonable portion of the parameter space for the minimal SuperGravity model and computed the flux upper limit for each point separately, taking fully into account the peculiar spectral features of each model. We found that in order to match the experimental upper limits with the model predictions, a minimum flux boost of 10^{3} is required, and that the upper limits are quite dependent on the shape of the gamma-ray energy spectrum predicted by each specific model. Finally we compared the upper limits with the predictions of some dark matter models able to explain the PAMELA rise in the positron ratio, finding that Segue 1 data are in tension with the dark matter explanation of the PAMELA spectrum in the case of a dark matter candidate annihilating into tau+tau-. Abstract: Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission from the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1222+21 (4C 21.35, z=0.432) was detected with the MAGIC Cherenkov telescopes during a short observation (~0.5 hr) performed on 2010 June 17. The MAGIC detection coincides with high energy MeV/GeV gamma-ray activity measured by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi satellite. The VHE spectrum measured by MAGIC extends from about 70 GeV up to at least 400 GeV and can be well described by a power law dN/dE \propto E^-Gamma with a photon index Gamma= 3.75+/-0.27stat +/-0.2syst. The averaged integral flux above 100 GeV is (4.56+/-0.46)x10^(-10) cm^-2 s^-1 (~1 Crab Nebula flux). The VHE flux measured by MAGIC varies significantly within the 30 min exposure implying a flux doubling time of about 10 min. The VHE and MeV/GeV spectra, corrected for the absorption by the extragalactic background light (EBL), can be described by a single power law with photon index 2.72+/-0.34 between 3 GeV and 400 GeV, and is consistent with emission belonging to a single component in the jet. The absence of a spectral cutoff constrains the gamma-ray emission region outside the Broad Line Region, which would otherwise absorb the VHE gamma-rays. Together with the detected fast variability, this challenges present emission models from jets in FSRQ. Moreover, the combined Fermi/LAT and MAGIC spectral data yield constraints on the density of the Extragalactic Background Light in the UV-optical to near-infrared range that are compatible with recent models., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure

Abstract: We present the results of five years (2005-2009) of MAGIC observations of the BL Lac object PG 1553+113 at very high energies (VHEs, E > 100 GeV). Power law fits of the individual years are compatible with a steady mean photon index \Gamma = 4.27 $\pm$ 0.14. In the last three years of data, the flux level above 150 GeV shows a clear variability (probability of constant flux < 0.001%). The flux variations are modest, lying in the range from 4% to 11% of the Crab Nebula flux. Simultaneous optical data also show only modest variability that seems to be correlated with VHE gamma ray variability. We also performed a temporal analysis of (all available) simultaneous Fermi/LAT data of PG 1553+113 above 1 GeV, which reveals hints of variability in the 2008-2009 sample. Finally, we present a combination of the mean spectrum measured at very high energies with archival data available for other wavelengths. The mean spectral energy distribution can be modeled with a one-zone Synchrotron Self Compton (SSC) model, which gives the main physical parameters governing the VHE emission in the blazar jet., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: Context. 3C 279, the first quasar discovered to emit VHE gamma-rays by the MAGIC telescope in 2006, was reobserved by MAGIC in January 2007 during a major optical flare and from December 2008 to April 2009 following an alert from the Fermi space telescope on an exceptionally high gamma -ray state. Aims. The January 2007 observations resulted in a detection on January 16 with significance 5.2 sigma, corresponding to a F(> 150 GeV) (3.8 \pm 0.8) \cdot 10^-11 ph cm^-2 s^-1 while the overall data sample does not show significant signal. The December 2008 - April 2009 observations did not detect the source. We study the multiwavelength behavior of the source at the epochs of MAGIC observations, collecting quasi-simultaneous data at optical and X-ray frequencies and for 2009 also gamma-ray data from Fermi. Methods. We study the light curves and spectral energy distribution of the source. The spectral energy distributions of three observing epochs (including the February 2006, which has been previously published in Albert et al. 2008a) are modeled with one-zone inverse Compton models and the emission on January 16, 2007 also with two zone model and with a lepto-hadronic model. Results. We find that the VHE gamma-ray emission detected in 2006 and 2007 challenges standard one-zone model, based on relativistic electrons in a jet scattering broad line region photons, while the other studied models fit the observed spectral energy distribution more satisfactorily., Comment: accepted to A&A, 12 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: We report new observations of the intermediate-frequency peaked BL Lacertae object 3C 66A with the MAGIC telescopes. The data sample we use were taken in 2009 December and 2010 January, and comprises 2.3 hr of good quality data in stereoscopic mode. In this period, we find a significant signal from the direction of the blazar 3C 66A. The new MAGIC stereoscopic system is shown to play an essential role for the separation between 3C 66A and the nearby radio galaxy 3C 66B, which is at a distance of only $6^\prime$. The derived integral flux above $100\eh{GeV}$ is 8.3% of Crab Nebula flux and the energy spectrum is reproduced by a power law of photon index $3.64 \pm 0.39_{\rm stat} \pm 0.25_{\rm sys}$. Within errors, this is compatible with the one derived by VERITAS in 2009. From the spectra corrected for absorption by the extragalactic background light, we only find small differences between the four models that we applied, and constrain the redshift of the blazar to $z < 0.68$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

37. The exotic fraction among unassociated Fermi sources

Abstract: Revealing the nature of unassociated high-energy (> 100 MeV) gamma-ray sources remains a challenge 35 years after their discovery. Of the 934 gamma-ray sources at high Galactic latitude (|b| > 15 degrees) in the First Fermi-LAT catalogue (1FGL), 316 have no obvious associations at other wavelengths. In this paper, we apply the K-means unsupervised classification algorithm to isolate potential counterparts for 18 unassociated Fermi sources contained within a 3000 square degree `overlap region' of the sky intensively covered in radio and optical wavelengths. Combining our results with previous works, we reach potential associations for 119 out of the 128 Fermi sources within said region. If these associations are correct, we estimate that less than 20% of all remaining unassociated 1FGL sources at high Galactic latitude (|b| > 15 degrees) might host `exotic' counterparts distinct from known classes of gamma-ray emitters. Potentially even these outliers could be explained by high-redshift/dust-obscured analogues of the associated sample or by intrinsically faint radio objects. Although such estimate leaves some room for novel discoveries, it severely restricts the possibility of detecting dark matter subhaloes and other unconventional types of gamma-ray emitters in the 1FGL. Abstract: Accurate assessment of the rate and state friction parameters of rocks is essential for producing realistic earthquake rupture scenarios and, in turn, for seismic hazard analysis. Those parameters can be directly measured on samples, or indirectly based on inversion of coseismic or postseismic slip evolution. However, both direct and indirect approaches require assumptions that might bias the results. Aiming to reduce the potential sources of bias, we take advantage of a downscaled analog model reproducing megathrust earthquakes. We couple the simulated annealing algorithm with quasi‐dynamic numerical models to retrieve rate and state parameters reproducing the recurrence time, rupture duration and slip of the analog model, in the ensemble. Then, we focus on how the asperity size and the neighboring segments' properties control the seismic cycle characteristics and the corresponding variability of rate and state parameters. We identify a tradeoff between (a–b) of the asperity and (a–b) of neighboring creeping segments, with multiple parameter combinations that allow mimicking the analog model behavior. Tuning of rate and state parameters is required to fit laboratory experiments with different asperity lengths. Poorly constrained frictional properties of neighboring segments are responsible for uncertainties of (a–b) of the asperity in the order of per mille. Roughly one order of magnitude larger uncertainties derive from asperity size. Those results provide a glimpse of the variability that rate and state friction estimates might have when used as a constraint to model fault slip behavior in nature. Plain Language Summary: We use laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to better understand the seismic behavior of an ideal subduction fault. Although experiments and numerical simulations represent a simplification of nature, they capture the first‐order physics of real faults with the advantage of known geometrical and physical properties. This represents a convenient condition for studying fault behavior because observational studies are generally retrieved on several assumptions and poorly constrained parameters (e.g., fault geometry, frictional properties distribution). In this study, we select two of those parameters (i.e., the asperity size and the neighboring segments' frictional properties) and investigate how they control fault behavior. Although we can model the observed slip behavior, we document that even a simple laboratory experiment requires tuning of the friction parameters to reproduce the observables. Abstract: The discovery of novel materials that are stable at ambient conditions with emergent functionalities is a pressing need of the 21st century to keep the pace of social and technological advancement in a sustainable manner. Nanotechnology and nanomaterials are one of this kind and the current era has already witnessed several groundbreaking discoveries of materials and disruptive technological advancements. Starting from 0D fullerene, the invention of 1D carbon nanotubes, and most recently 2D graphene, all are allotropes of carbon, have brought a lot of research opportunities to understand different physical and chemical phenomena at atomic and molecular scales and to convert such properties into useful applications. Among them, 2D materials find special attention due to unique properties such as ballistic carrier transport, immunity from substrate effects and commendable in plane mechanical robustness. However, the library of such materials is limited, and one can see that most of the technically viable materials that are already industrialized in a large scale belong to the class of non-van der Waals materials. The effect of confinement in one dimension on non-van der Waals materials remains unexplored owing to the difficulty in fabricating these materials to the ultra-thin limit with large lateral size or area. Recent advancement of cleaving non-van der Waals bulk materials to their ultra-thin counter parts through the state-of-the-art liquid phase exfoliation approach leads to renewed research interest among scientific community. The existence of cleaving/parting planes in certain directions of non-van der Waals materials, where the bonding strength is relatively weak compared to other crystallographic directions of the bulk crystal, facilitate smooth exfoliation when subjected to shear force through suitable methods. Se presenta un caso de hallazgo de síndrome de Fitz-Hugh-Curtis, pesquisado durante la inspección rutinaria de la cavidad abdominopélvica, al finalizar una histerectomía laparoscópica.The Fitz-Hugh-Curtis Syndrome is a perihepatitis secondary to peritonitis caused by ascending bacteria from a pelvic inflammatory disease. During the chronic phase may be observe adherences between the abdominal wall and the liver surface characterized by a "violin string" similarity. This image is considered criterion for the diagnosis. A case of incidental Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome observed during a routinely abdo-minopelvic cavity inspection at the end of a laparoscopic hysterectomy is presented.

Abstract: Antecedentes: La neuralgia del nervio pudendo pocas veces es sospechada y menos diagnosticada. Por esta razón, las pacientes que la padecen, consultan múltiples veces antes de llegar a un diagnóstico definitivo. Objetivo: Revisar la seguridad y eficacia de la infiltración de nervio pudendo, en el tratamiento del dolor en pacientes con neuralgia del nervio pudendo. Método: Seguimiento prospectivo de cinco pacientes ingresadas bajo el diagnóstico de síndrome de atrapamiento del nervio pudendo. La edad media de las pacientes fue 45 años. Debían tener 2 criterios mayores o 1 criterio mayor asociado a 2 criterios menores. Dolor con al menos 6 meses de evolución. Sin tratamientos previos. A todas se les realizó encuesta de síntomas y signos de atrapamiento del nervio pudendo. Todas fueron infiltradas con corticoides y anestésico, guiada por tomografía axial computada. Se comparó el dolor antes y después de la infiltración con escala de 0 a 10. Resultados: No hubo complicaciones durante el procedimiento. Todas disminuyeron el dolor después de la infiltración, y señalaron estar conformes con los resultados. Conclusión: La infiltración del nervio pudendo guiada por tomografía axial computada, es una técnica segura y eficaz, en el control o disminución del dolor pelviano, ocasionado por neuralgia del nervio pudendo. Sólo el seguimiento permitirá evidenciar la mantención de los buenos resultados, o la necesidad de repetir la infiltración o de realizar cirugía de descompresión.Background: The pudendal neuralgia infrequently is suspected and diagnosed. Therefore the patients who suffer it consult manifold times before arriving at a definitive diagnosis. Objective: To review the security and effectiveness of the pudendal nerve infiltration in the pudendal neuralgia treatment. Method: Prospective study of five patients under entrapment pudendal nerve syndrome diagnosis. The media age was 45 years old. All patients must have 2 greater criteria or 1 greater criteria associate to 2 smaller criteria. The pain must have an evolution of at least 6 months. They must not have antecedent of infiltration or surgery like treatment of this syndrome. A questionnaire of entrapment pudendal nerve syndrome was applied. The infiltration was with corticoids and anesthetic guided by CT scan. The patients classified their pain with a subjective scale; in which 0 is the pain absence and 10 is the maximum pain. The pain was compared before and after infiltration. Results: Complication did not appear during the infiltration procedure. In one patient an asymmetry in the spine corresponding to the side of pain was observed. All patients diminished the pain after the infiltration. All indicated to be in agreement with the results. Conclusion: The pudendal nerve infiltration guided by CT scan is safe and effective technique in the treatment or diminish of the pudendal neuralgia. Only the follow-up will allow demonstrating the good results, or the necessity to repeat the infiltration, or the necessity of decompression surgery.

Abstract: OBJECTIVES: To analyze whether current medical residency training programs in Spain foster the acquisition of knowledge and skills that enable specialists to provide emergency and urgent medical care. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied documents related to the content of residency programs for the following 4 specialties in effect in June 2021: internal medicine, intensive care medicine, anesthesiology and critical care, and family and community medicine. Program descriptions were obtained from the website of the Spanish Ministry of Health and the professional associations for each specialty. The associations' unofficial drafts and proposed updates were also studied. For emergency and urgent medicine, we studied drafts and updates of proposals presented to the Ministry of Health by the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES) in 2010 and an updated version presented in 2021. The proposals were drafted by the SEMES committee to promote specialization in emergency medicine. RESULTS: Existing residency programs treat the management of urgent events from diverse points of view related to hospital settings (internal medicine focusing on admitted patients, anesthesiology on patients in perioperative settings, and intensive care on those in their specialized units) or to primary care centers (family medicine), where they are an extension of routine care. The residents' rotations in emergency medicine vary. In anesthesiology, intensive care medicine, and family medicine, training occurs while residents are on call - in the first year for trainees in anesthesiology and intensive care medicine but throughout the 4-year residency (with time decreasing each year) for trainees in family medicine. Internal medicine offers an initial 3-month rotation in emergency medicine in the early phase and then assigns on-call shifts, without specifying a number. The proposed program submitted by SEMES includes wide-ranging contact with emergencies in various hospital settings (observation ward, trauma care, and pediatric care). Training in out-of-hospital emergencies and emergency and urgent care resource coordination centers are also included. CONCLUSION: Currently available residency training in Spain does not provide appropriate preparation for practicing emergency medicine. Emergency medicine has its own body of theory and settings for practice that differ from those of other specialties. Therefore, at present there is a training gap in Spain that should be filled by creating a specialization in emergency medicine.
