Understanding the geomechanical behavior of a geological model is still an on-going challenge for engineers and scientists. More challenges arise when considering the long-term behavior of rock materials, especially when exposed to environments that enable time-dependent processes to occur and govern overall behavior. The latter is essential in underground projects such as nuclear waste repositories. The lifespan can exceed one million years or other openings where the project’s lifetime and sustainability are the critical design parameter. In such cases, progressive rock mass deformation that can lead to instabilities, time-dependent overloading of support and delayed failure are considered the product of time-dependent phenomena. Understanding and predicting the overall impact of such phenomena aims to achieve design optimization, avoiding dlivery delays and thus cost overruns. This chapter provides more insight into the time-dependent behavior of rocks. Simultaneously, the emphasis is given to investigating and analyzing creep deformation and time-dependent stress relaxation phenomenon at the laboratory scale, and in-depth analyses are presented. This work further develops the understanding of these phenomena, and practical yet scientific tools for estimating and predicting the long-term strength and the maximum stress relaxation of rock materials is presented. The work presented in this chapter advances the scientific understanding of time-dependent rock, and rock mass behavior increases the awareness of how such phenomena are captured numerically and lays out a framework for dealing with such deformations when predicting tunnel deformations.

Διεπιστημονικό-Διατμηματικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (Δ.Π.Μ.Σ.) “Σχεδιασμός και Κατασκευή Υπόγειων Έργων”, 193 σ., Αντικείμενο της παρούσας εργασίας είναι η ανάλυση του κόστους διάνοιξης (εκσκαφής και προσωρινής υποστήριξη) ελληνικών οδικών σηράγγων και απαρτίζεται από τα ακόλουθα κεφάλαια: ─ Στο Κεφάλιο_1 γίνεται μία εισαγωγή σχετικά με το κόστος κατασκευής τεχνικών έργων και σηράγγων, δίνονται ορισμοί για τις έννοιες της κοστολόγησης και τιμολόγησης και οι βασικές αρχές οι οποίες τις διέπουν ώστε να γίνει από τον αναγνώστη κατανοητή η διαφορά τους. Επίσης, παρουσιάζονται οι συνήθεις μέθοδοι εκτίμησης του κόστους και τέλος ακολουθεί η σύγκριση τους. ─ Στο Κεφάλαιο_2 αναλύεται το κόστος κατασκευής των τεχνικών έργων, τα στάδια πραγματοποίησης του, δίνοντας έμφαση στο κόστος κατασκευής των σηράγγων. Εν συνεχεία, προσδιορίζονται τα κριτήρια σχεδιασμού και οι τεχνικοί παράγοντες που διέπουν την κατασκευή των σηράγγων. Αναφέρονται οι μέθοδοι κατασκευής των υπογείων έργων και τα μέτρα υποστήριξης τους Ιδιαίτερη έμφαση δίνεται στην τιμολόγηση των ελληνικών δημοσίων έργων δίνοντας παραδείγματα τεχνικών έργων και τέλος παρουσιάζονται αντίστοιχες αναλύσεις κόστους υπογείων έργων που έχουν γίνει σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο. ─ Στο Κεφάλαιο_3 περιγράφονται οι πέντε προς ανάλυση ελληνικές οδικές σήραγγες (Σήραγγα Ραψομμάτη, Σήραγγα Άγιου Ηλία, Σήραγγα Αγίας Κυριακής, Σήραγγα ΑΣ1 – Κακιά Σκάλα και Σήραγγα Κνημίδας). Παρουσιάζονται τα στοιχεία κόστους που προήλθαν από τις Οριστικές Μελέτες κατά τη διάρκεια κατασκευής των σηράγγων και πιο συγκεκριμένα αναλύεται το κόστος διάνοιξης (εκσκαφής και προσωρινής υποστήριξης) ανά μέτρα μήκους (€/μ.μ.) και ανά κυβικό μέτρο (€/m3). ─ Στο Κεφάλαιο_4 γίνεται η ανάλυση κόστους των ελληνικών οδικών σηράγγων με σημερινές τιμές μονάδος (εν έτη 2011), δηλαδή τα κόστη που προέκυψαν στο Κεφάλαιο_3 επαναπροσδιορίζονται – ανάγονται σε σημερινές τιμές, αποσκοπώντας στη δημιουργία κοινού σημείου αναφοράς για όλες τις υπό μελέτη σήραγγες και στην εξαγωγή συμπερασμάτων που αντικατοπτρίζουν την υπάρχουσα ελληνική πραγματικότητα. Τα κόστη που προκύπτουν από την αναθεώρηση εκφράζονται σε κόστος ανά μέτρο μήκους (€/μ.μ.) και κόστος ανά κυβικό (€/m3). Επίσης, γίνεται περαιτέρω ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων, συσχετίζοντας το κόστος διάνοιξης με τις γεωλογικές συνθήκες κατηγοριοποιώντας τη βραχόμαζα σε πέντε διακριτές ομάδες που ορίσθηκαν (κατηγορίες διάνοιξης και προσωρινής υποστήριξης: Α,Β,Γ,Δ & Ε) ανάλογα με την ποιότητά της (από πολύ καλή έως πτωχή), χρησιμοποιώντας τους RMR και GSI. Εν συνεχεία, πραγματοποιείται συσχέτιση του κόστους διάνοιξης και του μήκους σήραγγας. Τέλος, επιμερίζεται το κόστος διάνοιξης σε κόστος εκσκαφής και κόστος προσωρινής υποστήριξης και πραγματοποιείται συσχέτιση του επιμέρους κόστους εκσκαφής και του επιμέρους κόστους προσωρινής υποστήριξης με τις διάφορες κατηγορίες διάνοιξης και προσωρινής υποστήριξης. ─ Στο Κεφάλαιο_5 παρουσιάζονται τα συμπεράσματα της εργασίας. Η ανάλυση που πραγματοποιήθηκε δείχνει τη σημασία του ακριβούς υπολογισμού του κόστους κατασκευής ενός τεχνικού έργου. Σημαντικό στοιχείο της εργασίας πέρα από την αναγωγή του κόστους κατασκευής κάθε υπό μελέτης σήραγγας σε σημερινές τιμές (2011), είναι η συσχέτιση του κόστους κατασκευής με βασικούς δείκτες (RMR και GSI) που αφορούν στις συνθήκες της βραχόμαζας που θα συναντηθούν κατά την εκσκαφή. Λειτουργώντας έτσι, σύμφωνα με τις αρχές της συλλογιστικής βασισμένης σε περιπτώσεις, χρησιμοποιεί τα στοιχεία που υπολογίσθηκαν ώστε να συμβάλλει σ’ έναν γρήγορο και αντιπροσωπευτικό προκαταρκτικό υπολογισμό του κόστους κατασκευής σε αντίστοιχα μελλοντικά έργα., The objective of this thesis is to analyze and assess the construction cost (excavation and temporary support) of several Greek road tunnels. It is composed from the following chapters: ─ Chapter_1 gives an introduction to the construction cost of public works. The definitions of cost pricing and estimation are presented, as well as, their basic governing principles. Additionally, the principal cost estimation methods are presented and compared. ─ Chapter_2 analyzes the construction cost of public works and the stages that lead to its completion, where special emphasis is given to the construction cost of a tunnel. The technical factors, the design criteria, the construction methods and the support measures that are used for tunnel construction are identified. Special emphasis is given to the pricing of Greek public works by offering examples of technical projects. Finally cost analysis examples of foreign underground projects are presented. ─ Chapter_3 describes the five Greek road tunnels used in the analysis (Tunnel Rapsommati, St. Elias Tunnel, St. Sunday Tunnel, Tunnel AS1 - Kakia Skala, Tunnel Knimida). The cost figures that were derived by the final studies during the construction of the tunnels are presented and more specifically the tunneling cost (excavation and temporary support) per meter (€/m) and per cubic meter (€/m3) is estimated. ─ Chapter_4 presents the cost analysis of the Greek road tunnels according to current unit prices (2011). More specifically, the costs derived from Chapter_ 3 are adjusted to current prices aiming to establish a common reference point for all the tunnels under study in order to draw conclusions that reflect the current Greek conditions. Further analysis of the results is made by relating the tunneling cost to the geological conditions by establishing a rockmass categorization of five groups (categories of excavation and temporary support A, B, C, D & E) according to their quality (from very good to poor). Furthermore, a relation between tunneling cost and tunnel length is derived. Finally, a distinction is proposed in regards to the cost of tunneling and it is allocated between the excavation and the temporary support measures. ─ Chapter 5 presents the conclusions derived from the above analysis. The analysis illustrates the principal importance of accurate construction cost estimation. In the thesis, besides the construction cost assessment and adjustment to current prices (2011) of the five under investigation tunnels, a relation between the construction cost and the basic geomechanical indexes GSI and RMR is proposed. Thus, according to the basics of CBR method (case based reasoning), the analysis undertaken, uses the compiled data, so as to provide a rapid and representative preliminary construction cost estimation tool in other similar works in Greece., Χρυσόθεμις Π. Mining operations produce a multiscale network of fractures in the coal seams. Permeability evolution in rocks is important for coal bed methane (CBM) and shale gas exploitation as well as for greenhouse gas storage. Therefore, this work presents laboratory tests and a coupled model using PFC3D and FLAC3D to simulate the stress induced permeability evolution in coal samples. Basic mechanical properties are determined via lab testing. The spatial distributions of different components inside the reconstructed samples produce a significant heterogeneity based on CT technique. A newly developed experimental system is employed to perform 3-dimensional loading and to measure the flow rate simultaneously. The evolution process is described by 5 distinct phases in terms of permeability and deformation. Triaxial tests are simulated with PFC3D using a novel flexible wall boundary method. Gas seepage simulations are performed with FLAC3D. Relations between hydraulic properties and fracture data are established. Permeability and volumetric strain show good nonlinear exponential relation after a newly introduced expansion point. Piecewise relations fit the whole process, the expansion point can be treated as critical point. The structural characteristics of the samples influence this relation before and after the expansion point significantly.
