Background: For several decades, the European wildcat (Felis silvestris) has gradually been returning to the forests of Germany, mainly in the central and southwestern regions. To increase the knowledge about this threatened species, the endoparasite status of dead found specimens from Germany was surveyed., Methods: A total of 118 wildcats were examined for endoparasites in peritoneal organs and skeletal muscles. Owing to decomposition or incomplete carcasses, 104 gastrointestinal tracts (stomachs and intestines), 101 livers with gallbladders, 99 urinary bladders, as well as kidneys of 95 and skeletal muscles of 112 specimens were available for examination. All detected parasites were identified morphologically to genus or species level, followed by molecular examinations of one to ten specimens of each parasite species., Results: Overall endoparasite prevalence in peritoneal organs was 99.0% (103/104). Among the 99.0% (103/104) infected gastrointestinal tracts, the most frequent species were Toxocara cati (95.2% [99/104]), Hydatigera kamiyai (84.6% [88/104]), Mesocestoides litteratus (69.2% [72/104]), Strongyloides spp. (58.7% [61/104]), Cylicospirura petrowi (37.5% [39/104]), Ancylostoma tubaeforme (31.7% [33/104]), Capillaria putorii (24.0% [25/104]), and Echinococcus multilocularis (18.3% [19/104]). In 77.8% (77/99) of the urinary bladders, Capillaria plica and/or Capillaria feliscati were detected. Moreover, the liver fluke Metorchis bilis occurred in 2.0% (2/101) of the livers, and roundworm larvae (presumably Toxocara spp.) were detected in 33.0% (37/112) of the muscle samples., Conclusions: These results show a broad spectrum of endoparasite species infecting European wildcats in Germany. In Brazil, the wild boar (Sus scrofa) is the main invasive exotic species, responsible for causing various economic, environmental, and health damages to biodiversity. In view of the above, we aimed in our study to investigate the occurrence of endo and ectoparasites in free-ranging wild boars in the northwest region of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. In total, 45 animals of different sexes and ages were examined in this research. Fecal and urine samples were processed using coproparasitological techniques. Multiple incisions in muscles, liver, and pancreas were also made to investigate cestodes and trematodes, and the entire epidermal region of the animals was analyzed for ectoparasites search. In our study, we demonstrate an occurrence of 97.77% (44/45) and 43.33% (13/30) of endo and ectoparasites, respectively, in wild boars, with the identification of eggs of Metastrongylus spp., Strongyloides ransomi, Trichuris suis, Stephanurus dentatus, and nematodes of the order Strongylida, as well as oocysts of Eimeriidae protozoa. The wild and farm-raised ornamental fish trade is an industry that generates substantial economic profits worldwide. We report the parasitic fauna of imported marine and freshwater ornamental fish from ten aquarium wholesaler shops from two important localities in Mexico: Morelos Market in Mexico City and Merida in the state of Yucatan. Between February 2016 and March 2020, a total of 631 fish were examined for parasites, of which 66 species belong to 19 families of marine ornamental fish and 22 species from 9 families of freshwater ornamental fish. Twelve parasite species were recovered in marine fish belonging to three taxa: 7 Digenea, 3 Monogenea and 2 Nematoda. In freshwater fish, four parasite species belonging to four taxa were found: Protozoa, Digenea, Nematoda and Cestoda. Infection of individual fish species by specific parasites ranged from 0.20 to 4.55 %. The monogeneans Neobenedenia girellae and Pseudempleurosoma haywardi were the most prevalent parasites. Spearman's rank correlation test showed a significant association between various aquarium biosecurity practices, such as the absence of a quarantine area, low water exchange rates, lack of prophylactic treatments, inadequate removal of dead fish, and insufficient disinfection of water and equipment with the prevalence of N. girellae and P. haywardi. Background: Rodents are reservoir hosts for zoonotic pathogens that cause tropical diseases, many of which have been overlooked., Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of viral lymphocytic choriomeningitis and hantavirus infections, bacterial tularaemia and leptospirosis, and parasitic leishmaniasis and toxoplasmosis in rodents that are likely to carry and spread zoonotic agents, by using molecular methods., Methods: A total of 498 voles collected from 20 counties of Erzurum province. Conventional PCR was used for pathogen search. PCR-positive samples were subjected to sequence analysis., Results: Hantavirus (4.8%, 24/498) and tularaemia (0.8%, 4/498) positivity were detected. However, no positivity was detected for other selected pathogens., Conclusions: Rodents, which are pathogen carriers and potential risk factors, are thought to may act as reservoirs for hantavirus and tularaemia in the study area. A preliminary study has been carried out at the point of detection of these diseases of global importance. Background: There are over 42 million dogs in Mexico, with a significant population living on the streets, especially in the State of Mexico. These dogs can act as carriers of zoonotic pathogens, placing children and individuals with chronic diseases or immunodeficiencies at risk., Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of zoonotic parasites in feral and domestic dogs in the urban area of the eastern State of Mexico and assess their potential impact on public health., Methods: The study was conducted from July 2022 to March 2023 in the urban area located in the eastern region of the State of Mexico. A total of 134 samples of dog faces were collected through convenience sampling, from both domiciled and non-domiciled dogs., Results: Fifty-one dogs were identified with Ancylostomatidae family (38.1%, 95% CI: 27.0%-52.1%), 10 with Toxocara spp. (7.5%, 95% CI: 3.6%-13.3%), 7 with Dipylidium caninum (5.5%, 95% CI: 2.1%-10.5%), 8 with Cystoisospora spp. (6.0%, 95% CI: 2.6%-11.4%), 6 with Giardia spp. (4.5%, 95% CI: 1.7-9.5%) and 2 positive cases for Hymenolepis spp. (1.5%, 95% CI: 0.2%-5.3%) were identified., Conclusions: This study highlights a public health concern related to non-domiciled dogs, which can serve as carriers of zoonotic parasites. Interactions among non-domiciled dogs, domiciled dogs and humans heighten the risk of transmission. Multivalvulidan myxosporeans (Multivalvulida) of the genera Unicapsula Davis, 1924 and Kudoa Meglitsch, 1947 are mostly causative agents of latent and imperceptible infection in marine fishes. However, they are sometimes incriminated in causing post-mortem myoliquefaction or unsightly cyst formation in commercial fish. Despite the great commercial impacts of multivalvulidan infection, the biodiversity, host range and epidemiology of multivalvulidan species remain to be explored further, including infection of alternative annelid hosts. Therefore, this study aimed to identify multivalvulidan species and their host and/or distribution records in commercial fishes in China. Multivalvulidan infection was detected in ten commercial fish species of seven families from the South and East China Seas (Northwest Pacific Ocean) and the Eastern Central Atlantic Ocean (an imported Dagetichthys lusitanicus [de Brito Capello]). Based on morphological and molecular-genetic analyses of their small and large subunit of ribosomal RNA genes, five new host and/or geographical distribution records for five fish species are presented, and three new species in five fish species are described, namely Kudoa neoscomberomori sp. n. in Scomberomorus commerson (Lacépède); Kudoa pilosa sp. n. in Helicolenus hilgendorfi (Döderlein) (type host) and Sebastiscus tertius (Barsukov et Chen); and Kudoa tumidisporica sp. n. in Photopectoralis bindus (Valenciennes) (type host) and Nuchequula nuchalis (Temminck et Schlegel). This study provides new data on multivalvulidan diversity in the ocean ecosystem.

The Amazon is the largest river basin in the world and it is home to the greatest diversity of freshwater fish in the world. Mesonauta festivus is a cichlid popularly known as flag cichlid, widely distributed throughout South America. The diversity of parasites in fish from the Amazon region is still underestimated, due to the high fishes diversity. The Myxozoa class has a universal distribution, with some specimens being pathogenic to some fish. The aim of this work was to describe a new species of Hoferellus in M. festivus. The fish were collected in the lake region, municipality of Tartarugalzinho, in the state of Amapá, Brazil. The new species was found parasitizing the urinary bladder of M. festivus. Spores were 11.5 ±1.1 (10.4-12.6) µm long and 10.9 ±1 (9.9-11.9) µm wide, and polar capsules were equally sized, measuring 4.9 ±0.5 (4.4-5.4) µm long and 3.4 ±0.9 (2.5-4.3) µm wide, with a pyriform shape, convergent with the apical region of the spore. The polar filament was wound with 5 to 6 turns. Morphological, morphometric, molecular and phylogenetic analysis proved that it is a new species of Hoferellus in the Amazon region.

Among different climatic zones in India, the tropical monsoon region comprises a diverse ecosystem characterized by the endemic nature of several parasites including certain emerging and re-emerging vector-borne pathogens of humans, whereas a systematic investigation of the occurrence of different parasites among domestic goats in this area is not yet explored. The goal of the present study is to explore the parasite diversity focusing on molecular identification of vector-borne hemoparasites and its health impacts on domestic goats reared in the tropical monsoon climate zone of Kerala, India. Among 227 goats presented to the Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex (TVCC) in the monsoon months of 2023, thirty animals were recruited for the study. The animals were screened for the presence of different hemoparasites (Anaplasma spp., Theileria spp., and Babesia spp.), ectoparasites (ticks, lice, and fleas), and gastrointestinal (GI) parasites (hookworms, threadworms, tapeworms, whipworms, and coccidia). The isolated hemoparasites were further characterized by sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. The correlation studies to elucidate the association between the occurrence of different parasites and clinical manifestations (hyperthermia, pallor of mucous membrane, circulatory failure, respiratory signs, neurological instability, and GI signs), blood picture (anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia), demographics (sex and age), and treatment history (hemoparasitic therapy, ectoparasiticidal application, and prophylactic deworming) were conducted. The co-infection status of these parasites was also evaluated. A substantial portion of the goats in the study group was found to be affected by vector-borne hemoparasitic diseases and their arthropod vectors or GI parasites or both. This can be attributed to the constantly warm and humid climate of the region, which is favorable for the survival and growth of different life cycle stages of these parasites and vectors. BackgroundBrown rats ( Rattus norvegicus ) are synanthropic rodents with worldwide distribution, which are known to harbour many zoonotic pathogens and parasites. No systematic zoonotic surveys targeting multiple pathogens and parasites have previously been conducted in urban rats in Finland.AimIn Helsinki, Finland, we explored the presence and prevalence in brown rats of certain pathogens and parasites (including helminths, viruses and bacteria) across potentially zoonotic taxa.MethodsWe opportunistically received rat carcasses from pest management operators and citizens from 2018 to 2023. We searched for heart- or lungworms, performed rat diaphragm digestion to check for Trichinella and morphologically identified intestinal helminths. We assessed virus exposure by immunofluorescence assay or PCR, and detected bacteria by PCR ( Leptospira ) or culture ( Campylobacter ).ResultsAmong the rats investigated for helminths, no heart- or lungworms or Trichinella species were detected and the most common finding was the cestode Hymenolepis nana (in 9.7% of individuals sampled, 28/288). For some of the surveyed virus taxa, several rats were seropositive (orthopoxviruses, 5.2%, 11/211; arenaviruses, 2.8%, 6/211; hantaviruses 5.2%, 11/211) or tested positive by PCR (rat hepatitis E virus, 1.8%, 4/216). Campylobacter jejuni (6.6%, 17/259) and Leptospira interrogans (1.2%, 2/163) bacteria were also present in the rat population examined.ConclusionsPrevalences of potentially zoonotic pathogens and parasites in brown rats in Helsinki appeared low. This may explain low or non-existent diagnosis levels of rat-borne pathogen and parasite infections reported in people there. Nevertheless, further assessment of under-diagnosis, which cannot be excluded, would enhance understanding the risks of zoonoses.

The coastal waters of Vietnam are home to a wide diversity of fishes, but the parasite diversity of these potential hosts is much less well characterized. To begin addressing this knowledge gap, we carried out surveys of myxozoan parasites in fishes collected from Nha Trang Bay in Vietnam's East Sea in 2018-2019. Mugilid fishes were collected in March-April 2018, January-February 2019, and November-December 2019, and examined for myxozoans. Myxospores consistent with those of the genus Ellipsomyxa were found in the gall bladder of four mullet species, and we thoroughly characterized those from Planiliza melinoptera. Myxospores were elliptoid and devoid of striation, with a distinct sinuous suture line. Polar capsules were pyriform and oriented toward the poles of the spore. Morphological features were compared to nominal species and this species from Vietnam was distinct. Phylogenetic analysis based on partial small subunit rDNA sequence revealed that broadly, Ellipsomyxa species split into three phylogenetic lineages, and although in some branches there are groupings by host family, habitat or locality, there are no clear phylogenetic patterns. The new species we encountered in P. melinoptera had a close sister relationship with Ellipsomyxa adlardi, with both species part of a larger subclade within the Ellipsomyxa lineage. Despite this phylogenetic similarity, these species were morphologically distinct, and partial large subunit DNA sequences were only 93% similar to each other. Parasitic infections are among the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in horses worldwide. In the Andean mountainous regions of Chile, horses are a highly valued specie, playing a key role as working animals also providing support in cattle transhumance grazing into high mountainous areas during dry season. The breeding and maintenance of horses in the mountainous region of La Araucanía in Chile is a key issue allowing to the subsistence economy of communities with a strong ethnic component represented by Mapuche-Pehuenche origin families. However, the health status of these animals is unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine endoparasitic infections in horses from this area and the main factors that may influence parasitism. Thus, a cross-sectional study performed in 126 working horses from Andean region was achieved by using different coproparasitologycal analyses, resulting in a 97,6% of prevalence of endoparasitism with the strongyle eggs showing the highest prevalence of infection in analysed horses (96%) followed by Oxyuris equi (27%), Parascaris equorum (17,5%) and protozoans including ciliates (11,1%), Blastocystis spp (5,6%), Giardia spp (2,4%) and Cryptosporidium spp (1,6%) highlighting zoonotic relevance of some of these species. Concerning risk factors, the high prevalence suggests that exposure was high regardless of age or sex. The higher proportion of infected horses were grazing compared to those stabled, likewise drinking non-potable water, being these the main risks factors linked to the high prevalence of horse infections in Andean communities here studied., (© 2024. This study examined the metrics of the macroparasite community in fishes from the Jaguaribe River basin, state of Ceará, before and after receiving water from the São Francisco River in Northeastern Brazil. This research assessed the association of environmental factors (water parameters) and the traits of 30 fish species on the parasite richness and abundance across space (river course) and time (seasons, pre- and post-transposition periods). Generalized linear models reveal associations between parasite metrics and host traits, water parameters, and river sub-basin. Host size and body condition positively correlated with parasite richness and abundance, while reproductive phase was negatively related. Water quality impacted ecto- and endoparasites differently, with seasonal and sub-basins variations and differences among sub-basins. The general models also indicate that the period is a significant variable, where parasite richness decreases while abundance increases in the post-transposition period. This study underscores the importance of considering diverse environmental and host variables for understanding parasite dynamics in river ecosystems. Myxozoans are microscopical parasites widely distributed in fish, with over 2,600 described species, but their actual diversity is still underestimated. Among salmonids, more than 70 myxozoan species have been identified. This study focuses on species of Chloromyxum Mingazzini, 1890 that infect salmonid kidneys, particularly C. majori Yasutake et Wood, 1957 and C. schurovi Shulman et Ieshko, 2003. Despite their similar spore morphology, they exhibit distinct host preferences, tissue affinities and geographical distributions. Chloromyxum schurovi predominantly infects the renal tubules of Salmo salar Linnaues and S. trutta Linnaeus in Europe, while C. majori targets the glomeruli of Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum) and O. tshawytscha (Walbaum) in North America. The sequence data for C. majori and C. schurovi have been either missing or questionable. In our study, we examined the kidneys of two salmonid species for chloromyxid infections, using both morphological and molecular data to characterise Chloromyxum species in salmonids. The sequence of C. schurovi obtained in our study did not match the previously published parasite data. Instead, it clustered as an independent lineage sister to the Paramyxidium Freeman et Kristmundsson, 2018 clade gathering the species from various fish organs, including the urinary tract. Our findings clarified the taxonomic origin of the previous C. schurovi sequence as Myxidium giardi Cépède, 1906, highlighting the risks associated with the presence of myxozoan blood stages in the bloodstream of their fish host and the challenges of non-specific PCR amplification. We redescribe C. schurovi, thus contributing to a better understanding of the diversity and phylogeny of kidney-infecting species of Chloromyxum.

The mapará (Hypophthalmus marginatus) is a commercially important fish in the Brazilian Amazon and has been described as a host for numerous myxosporid species. The integrated taxonomy of a new species, Myxobolus mickeyii n. sp., discovered in the urinary bladder of H. marginatus, is undertaken in this study. In 105 specimens of H. marginatus, plasmodia and myxospores were observed in the urinary bladder fluid, the myxospores measuring 20.5 (19.6-21.3) μm in length and 14.0 (13.2-14.9) μm in width. The posterior valves of the spore body were thick, with valvulogenic nuclei, endoplasmic reticulum, and the presence of secretory vesicles. Two elliptical, rounded appendages attached to the valve, containing tubular filaments. The two polar capsules, symmetry, measuring 6.1 (5.9-6.3) μm in length and 4.4 (3.6-6.2) μm in width, with polar tubules of 3 to 5 turns. Phylogenetic analyses of the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA) sequencing revealed that M. mickeyii n. sp. is part of a Myxobolidae family clade with freshwater fish of the Siluriformes order, with a genetic distance of 19% to the nearest species. This article presents a checklist of metazoan parasites of snakes from Argentina, along with a comprehensive review of the relevant literature published between 1922 and June 2023, covering various aspects of interest. We compiled 34 species of metazoan endoparasites from 28 studies. The subclass Digenea showed the highest number of species (n = 22 species), followed by the phylum Nematoda (n = 8 species), and the subclass Pentastomida (n = 3 species and 1 taxa inquirenda ). Dipsadidae was the family of snakes with the most species examined for metazoan endoparasites (n = 20 species). In contrast, Viperidae had the largest number of specimens surveyed (n = 343). Of 23 provinces, 15 (65.2%) presented at least one report of metazoan endoparasites in snakes. The northeastern provinces showed the highest richness of metazoan endoparasites and host diversity. Many articles focused on taxonomy, but studies on parasite ecology were not found. Although taxonomic accuracy was high in most reports, some records were correctly deposited in zoological collections or geo-referenced. This is the first attempt to include all groups of metazoan endoparasites of snakes from Argentina in a single checklist in the last century.

There is a claimed increase in the global prevalence and incidence of emerging diseases observed in many organisms. Myxozoa represents an essential group of metazoan parasites that hold both economic and ecological significance. In the current study, 1% of the fish population at two commercial goldfish (Carassius auratus) farms in Tehran and Ghom province, Iran, developed cavitating muscular lesions resembling humps in February 2021 and January 2022. Fish displaying pathological abnormalities were transported to the Ornamental Fish Clinic and subjected to clinical examination. Light microscopy was subsequently used to examine wet smears of skin and gills, as well as whitish exudate. In addition, tissue homogenates were collected for more precise identification and molecular confirmation. The study discovered that individuals from the goldfish farms were infected with the pathogenic myxozoan Myxobolus lentisuturalis, which caused significant damage to the epaxial muscles. The spores collected from the humps had a lack of uniformity and were primarily ellipsoidal in shape. Histopathological analysis also revealed parasites in various stages of development, such as plasmodia and spores, as well as inflammatory cell infiltration (macrophage, giant cell and lymphoplasmacytic infiltration) between skeletal muscle fibers. Phylogenetic analysis of M. lentisuturalis was performed by using MEGA 11 and the maximum likelihood method. M. lentisuturalis is a myxozoan parasite that has been sparsely recorded and lacks widespread recognition. The presence of transmissible disease in livestock has a major impact on welfare and economics in animal and public health. A lack of data enables the spread of diseases due to misinformed decision-making on prevention and control. Low-resource settings face challenges in providing data, turning data availability into a development issue. For this study, a large dataset (n = 997) was collected on prevalence and seroprevalence estimates on viral (n = 224), bacterial (n = 83) and parasitic (n = 690) diseases in backyard chickens in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These estimates originate from 306 studies identified during the screening phase of a systematic literature review. An attempt was made to classify the studies according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations'classification system for family poultry production systems. Of the studies, 98.7% (302/306) focused on a single poultry production system, while 1.3% (4/306) targeted two different production systems. Within the group of studies that covered one production system, 85.4% (258/302) were classified as ‘small extensive scavenging or extensive scavenging,'‘small extensive scavenging'and/or ‘extensive scavenging'. In addition, 52% (159/306) of the studies did not report information on chicken breed type. No data were found on any relevant disease for 56.9% (78/137) of LMICs, signifying a potential data gap. Of the estimates on viral and bacterial diseases, 71.0% (218/307) corresponded to diseases notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health, highlighting a tendency to measure disease occurrence for diseases relevant to trade. The latter might not necessarily be priority diseases for the producers, however. Furthermore, 72.3% (222/307) of the estimates originate from random samples and could be used to estimate prevalence in backyard chickens using imputation methods, thus bridging the data gap.

During March 2023, 7 green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) and 2 bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) were collected from the Black River (White River drainage) in Lawrence County, Arkansas. In addition, during March 2023 and again in May-June 2023, 13 L. cyanellus and 6 L. macrochirus were taken from Butcherknife and Big Fork creeks (Ouachita River drainage), Polk County, Arkansas, 9 L. cyanellus were collected from the Caddo River, Montgomery County, Arkansas, and 5 green sunfish were taken from Clear Creek at Savoy, Washington County, Arkansas. All fish had their gill, gallbladder, fins, integument, musculature, and other major organs examined for myxozoans. The gill of 1 of 34 (3%) L. cyanellus was infected with a new myxozoan, Myxobolus fergusoni n. sp. Qualitative and quantitative morphological data were obtained from fresh myxospores, and molecular data consisted of a 1,933-base-pair sequence of the partial small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene. Phylogenetic analysis grouped M. fergusoni n. sp. with other centrarchid-infecting myxobolids from North America and placed this cluster in a larger clade comprising myxozoans that infect North American and European esocids, a North American aphredoderid, European percids, and a gasterosteid from Japan. Myxobolus fergusoni n. sp. infects the gill arches of L. cyanellus, similar to Myxobolus cartilaginis (Hoffman, Putz, and Dunbar, 1965), which was described from head cartilage, gill arches, and large fin rays of L. cyanellus. Another is Myxobolus mesentericusKudo, 1920, which was described from the viscera of green sunfish. A large polysporic plasmodium filled with myxospores was present in a basifilamental location associated with multiple gill filaments at their junction with the gill arch. The intact plasmodium replaced connective tissue within the arch but elicited only mild proliferation of overlying epithelium and a minimal host inflammatory response. Myxospores discovered floating free in the bile of marine fishes from the south-central coast of Vietnam were identified using morphological and molecular methods, leading to the description of 2 new species. Ceratomyxa chauvanminhi n. sp. was detected in 16% (8/50) of cultured barramundi Lates calcarifer (Bloch) specimens, and Ceratomyxa sekoi n. sp. was found in 20% (5/25) of wild largehead hairtail Trichiurus lepturus Linnaeus specimens. The spores of C. chauvanminhi n. sp. are very shallowly ovoid, slightly crescent shaped, and 11.5 ± 0.5 (10.7-12.4) μm thick, 5.8 ± 0.2 (5.4-6.1) μm long, and 5.5 ± 0.2 (5.2-5.7) μm wide. Their posterior angles are slightly concave at 158.7° ± 4.2° (151.3°-164.8°), and they possess 2 equal spherical polar capsules 2.5 ± 0.2 (2.1-2.9) μm in diameter. The spores of C. sekoi n. sp. are 5.6 ± 0.2 (5.0-6.1) μm long, 75.5 ± 4.8 (68.9-90.0) μm thick, and 5.5 ± 0.1 (5.4-5.6) μm wide, with 2 equal, slightly anterior spherical polar capsules 2.1 ± 0.2 (1.7-2.4) μm in diameter. Although C. sekoi n. sp. spores resemble those of species of MyxodavisiaZhao, Zhou, Kent, and Whipps, 2008, characterized by long tapering valves, genetic analyses distinctly place this new species within the Ceratomyxa Thélohan, 1892 lineage. Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) are an important game species throughout the geographic range. Populations throughout multiple regions of the US have been declining, including in Kentucky, US, raising concerns among managers and resource users. To better understand the overall population health, we performed postmortem examinations and targeted pathogen, mineral, and toxicant testing on 36 adult male, apparently healthy, wild turkeys that were hunter harvested in western Kentucky during April 2018. We found that birds were in fair to good nutritional condition with no significant gross or microscopic lesions. Ticks (Amblyomma spp.) and lice (three species) were present on 94 and 31% of birds, respectively. We commonly detected intestinal nematodes and cestodes and found coccidian oocysts in 39% and capillarid eggs in 6% of birds. The prevalences of lymphoproliferative disease virus and reticuloendotheliosis virus were 39 and 11%, respectively. Spleen samples tested with PCR were positive for Borrelia burgdorferi, Haemoproteus sp., and Leucocytozoon sp. in 11, 83, and 3%, respectively. Based on a subjective histologic assessment of testis tissues, most birds had widespread and abundant sperm present. Mineral analysis and broad toxicant screening on liver samples from 32 turkeys were unremarkable. Background: Our investigation focused into Labeo rohita, commonly known as Rui, a freshwater aquatic species in Bangladesh. Despite their nutritional significance, these fish faced a pressing challenge: parasite infections threaten the economic stability of the aquaculture sector., Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the parasite and histological changes in major organs of L. rohita, collected from Khulna region - Dumuria, Paikgacha and Rupsha., Methods: About 180 (30/month) specimens were collected between the month of March and August 2023 to observe the parasitic status in L. rohita., Results: Through microscopic examination, a total of 323 parasites were uncovered, spanning categories including Cestode, Nematode, Acanthocephala, Trematode and Digenia, predominantly residing in the intestines of L. rohita. The highest prevalence rate (70%) was recorded in both March and May 2023, with peak mean intensity observed in July (3.73). Notably, the highest mean abundance (2.37) exhibited in July and index of infestation (45.34) in June. Histological analysis confirmed parasitic infestations in the gastrointestinal region, with displaying histological changes within major organs such as the liver, kidney, gills, spleen and testicles due to parasitic infection., Conclusion: This study concluded that the indentified six categories of parasite and the affect of parasitic infestation in major organs of L. rohita within the study period. Egyptians are becoming more interested in owning and raising pets; however, most of them lack essential awareness about the risk of zoonotic parasites that could be transmitted. The objective of the present investigation was to evaluate the degree of awareness Egyptian pet owners possess concerning zoonotic parasitic diseases, the risk of transmission, and preventative measures. A cross-sectional study was conducted using an e-survey. Among 246 pet owners, 64.2% (158) were females, and 67.9% (167) belonged to the 20-30 age group. The majority, 78.9% (194), were raising cats. Only 13.8% (34) visited the veterinarian regularly, with significantly higher results among dog owners (p < 0.05). Only 31.3% (77) participants were regularly deworming their pets, and 19.9% (49) were giving their pets prophylaxis against ectoparasites, with significantly higher results among those who visited the veterinarian regularly (p < 0.0001) and among dog owners (p < 0.05). Only 54.1% (133) had heard about the term "zoonoses" before, and about 8.9% (22) of participants showed a history of zoonotic parasitic diseases, with significantly higher results among those who allowed their animals to play with other animals of neighbors and friends (p < 0.05). Myxozoans are obligatory parasites and can be found in various organs and bloodstreams of fish, thus, the objective of this work was to describe the occurrence of Myxobolus spp. in the circulating blood of Metynnis lippincottianus from River Curiaú, Macapá City, eastern Amazon, Brazil. The samples of M. lippincottianus (11) were caught using cast net and gillnets. The fish blood was collected by puncturing the caudal vessel, using needles and syringes containing 10% of EDTA solution. Blood smear were prepared and panchromatic stained with a combination of May Grunwald-Giemsa-Wright, for observation and examination of the parasitic structures in optical microscope. Tissues from the kidney was examined using specific stereoscopic binoculars to check for the presence of cysts, lesions and parasites. The prevalence of Myxobolus spp. infecting the circulating blood of the fish was 36.36% (4/11) and 15 spores of mixosporyds were visualized. Myxobolus spp. had a prevalence of 54.55% (6/11) in host's kidney tissue and the morphometric spores data converge with observed in the blood. The morphological characteristics of the spores in the blood samples revealed two morphotypes of Myxobolus spp. This is the sixth occurrence recorded of Myxobolus spp. infecting fish blood in Brazil.

Members of the genus Ortholinea are among the worldwide distributed myxozoan parasites that mainly infect marine fish. In this study, a new myxosporean species, Ortholinea hamsiensis n. sp., was isolated from the urinary bladder of European anchovy Engraulis engrasicolus collected from the Sinop coasts of the Black Sea. The prevalence and density values of infection were 1.4% and 1–5 individuals in the field of view (1 + ), respectively. Mature myxospores are subspherical with slight tapering down to the less pronounced tip in the frontal view and subspherical in the sutural view. Myxospores measured 9.1 ± 0.25 (8.8–9.9) μ m in length, 9.2 ± 0.11 (8.9–9.4) μ m in thickness, and 8.4 ± 0.33 (8.2-9.1) μ m in width. Two polar capsules equal in size measured 3.1 ± 0.11 (3.0–3.3) μ m in length and 2.7 ± 0.11 (2.6–2.9) μ m in width. The polar tubule had 3–4 coils. Along with morphological peculiarities, the results of the 18S rDNA also revealed it to be a new species for science compared to the other species of the genus. In this study, another myxosporean species O. gobiusi was also detected in round goby Neogobius melanostomus with a prevalence of infection value of 4.8% and a density of 1–5 individuals in the field of view (1 + ). The present study also provided the first data of 18S rDNA of O. gobiusi from N. melanostomus and type species of the genus O. divergens from Gobius niger and the phylogenetic relationships of these species with other Ortholinea species have been revealed.

Linguatula is a food born zoonotic parasite in which carnivores and herbivores serve as final and intermediate hosts, respectively. Human infection with Linguatula spp. occurs following consumption of raw or undercooked infected internal organs of the intermediate host and/or consumption of water and/or vegetables contaminated with eggs released from final hosts. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence and risk factors of Linguatula spp. in sheep, cattle, buffalo, goats and camels slaughtered at the Tabriz abattoir, Iran. In addition, effect of temperature and sodium chloride (NaCl) on survival time of Linguatula spp. nymphs was assessed. For this purpose, 25,520 mesenteric lymph nodes from 2552 animals and the livers and lungs from 656 animals were collected randomly and examined. To evaluate the effect of temperature and NaCl on the survival of Linguatula spp. nymphs in infected livers and lungs, 30 g of each liver and lung with dimensions of 2 × 3 × 4 cm, were exposed to temperatures of -20, 10, 50, 60 and 72 °C and NaCl concentrations of 5 %, 10 %, 15 % and 20 % for 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h, in triplicate. Based on the mesenteric lymph nodes, 25.7 % (656 of 2552 animals) were infected with Linguatula spp. Of the 656 liver and lungs assessed, 141 (21.5 %) and 62 (9.5 %) were infected with Linguatula spp., respectively. The rate of infection of mesenteric lymph nodes in all animals was significant with age (P < 0.05), with more older animals infected. In regards to sex, except for camels, more female animals were infected than male animals (P < 0.05). There was a significant difference in survival of nymphs based on temperature and/or NaCl and time (P < 0.0001). At 72 h, all temperatures assessed except 10 °C, resulted in all nymphs being inactivated. Sodium chloride was more effective against Linguatula spp. nymphs in livers than in lungs with 100 % efficacy only achieved against nymphs in livers at 20 % concentration after 48 h and at 10 and 15 % concentration after 72 h. Objective: As part of the National Disease Surveillance Program for Taiwanese Aquaculture, we investigated the causative agent of disease outbreaks in farmed Chicken Grunts Parapristipoma trilineatum., Methods: In this study, outbreak cases on two separate farms were noticed in coastal Pingtung County, Taiwan. In total, 50 juvenile fish showing clinical signs (such as emaciation and erratic swimming behavior) and broodstock (two females and two males) from both farms were collected to perform gross lesion assessment, histopathological examination, and molecular identification of the pathogen., Result: Clinical symptoms were infected fish exhibited erratic swimming behavior, such as whirling and floating on the surface of the water. In the following months, cumulative mortality had reached 19% and 24%, respectively. The gross lesions in the infected fish included white oval cysts in the muscle, serosa of the internal organs, sclera of the eyes, and cerebral meninges. After conducting a wet mount examination of cysts using a light microscope, we observed a significant quantity of spores with morphological characteristics, suggesting their affiliation with the Myxosporea group. The spores were semiquadrate, with four tiny suture notches at the periphery; the mean spore length was 7.3 μm (SD = 0.5), and the mean spore width was 8.2 μm (SD = 0.6). The mean length and width of the pyriform polar capsules (nematocysts) were 3.6 μm (SD = 0.5) and 2.2 μm (SD = 0.5), respectively. The 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA sequences of these specimens were identical to those of Kudoa lutjanus., Conclusion: As this was the first time an outbreak of K. lutjanus in Chicken Grunts was confirmed, its reappearance with substantial mortality should serve as a warning to the aquaculture industry., (© 2023 American Fisheries Society.)

Many zoonotic parasitic diseases, including Toxocara cati, may be spread by stray cat populations. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of parasites by performing parasitological and histopathological examinations on stray cats in Shiraz, Iran. A total of 106 stray cats from different geographical areas of Shiraz, southern Iran, were examined for the presence of parasites. The overall prevalence was found to be 83.02% (88/106), and eight parasites were found. The parasites included three genera of cestodes [Joyeuxiella echinorhynoides (52.83%), Taenia taeniaeformis (21.70%), and Dipylidium caninum (1.89%)], three nematodes [Physaloptera praeputialis (23.59%), Toxocara cati (15.09%), and Rictularia sp. (1.89%)], one protozoa [Isospora spp. (6.60%)], and one arthropod [Ctenocephalides felis (5.66%)]. The prevalence did not significantly differ between males and females. It did appear, nevertheless, that the age of cats may be regarded as a risk factor for these parasitic infections. Histopathological examination revealed some parasite-induced lesions in the intestine and stomach, including hyperemia, hemorrhage, mucosal destruction and inflammation. The lung tissues showed some histopathological lesions such as hemorrhage, edema, emphysema and mild inflammation, and dormant larvae were found in one tongue sample. The results of the present study showed that parasitic infections and, more importantly, T. cati are relatively prevalent in stray cats, and the people living in this area are at serious risk of this zoonotic disease. Objective: During routine histological examination of tissues from mortality events of anadromous Brook Trout Salvelinus fontinalis from Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada, myxospores consistent with Myxobolus were observed infecting the central nervous system. The objective of this study was to identify the species of Myxobolus infecting the nervous system of anadromous Brook Trout from PEI, Canada., Methods: Myxospore morphology, small subunit (SSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence data, and histology were used to identify myxospores isolated from infected Brook Trout., Result: Myxospore measurements from the PEI samples matched those reported in the description of Myxobolus neurofontinalis from North Carolina. A 1057-bp fragment of the SSU rDNA from myxospores collected from Brook Trout in PEI was identical to an isolate of M. neurofontinalis (MN191598) collected previously from the type locality, New River basin, North Carolina. Histological sections confirmed infections were intercellular in the central nervous system. Minimal host response was observed, with only sparse mononuclear inflammatory infiltrates present at the periphery of and within dispersed myxospores, suggesting that infections are not pathogenic to Brook Trout., Conclusion: Myxospores were identified as M. neurofontinalis, which was previously described from the central nervous system of Brook Trout from the New River basin, North Carolina, USA. Purpose: The aim of this study was the comparative analysis of the parasite communities of new populations of invasive pumpkinseed (Lepomis gibbosus) in western Ukraine with pumpkinseed from Czechia, where populations have rapidly expanded over the last two decades., Methods: Sampling took place at three localities in the western part of Ukraine (i.e. Dobrotvir Reservoir (Vistula basin), Burshtyn Reservoir (Dniester basin), Mynai Pond (Danube basin)) and four in Czechia (i.e. Oxbow D2, Heršpický Pond (Danube basin), and Kolín oxbow and Římov Reservoir (Elbe basin)., Results: In total, 11 parasite taxa were recorded in Ukraine and 17 in Czechia. Four species were co-introduced from North America with their host, i.e. the myxosporean Myxobolus dechtiari, the monogeneans Onchocleidus dispar and Onchocleidus similis, and metacercariae of a trematode Posthodiplostomum centrarchi. High dominance indices were related to a high abundance of co-introduced parasites, i.e. O. similis in Mynai pond and P. centrarchi in Dobrotvir Reservoir. Overall abundance of acquired parasites was generally low., Conclusion: This study shows that parasite communities in recently established pumpkinseed populations in the western part of Ukraine and Czechia are less diverse than those established in Europe for decades. Purpose: As a result of environmental imbalances of anthropogenic origin, the potential for transmission of parasites and viruses between different primates, including humans, might increase. Thus, parasitic studies have great relevance to primatology, which motivated us to conduct a literature review to synthesize the information available in American primates of the Callithrix genus., Methods: We carried out the bibliographic search on the main groups of parasites (protozoa, helminths, arthropods, ectoparasites) and viruses found in Callithrix in Brazil in search platforms and consider all manuscript that appeared in search engines, published between the years 1910 and December 2022. In each selected article, the following information was recorded: the host species; parasite taxa; scientific classification of the parasite; host habitat (free-living, captive); diagnostic technique; state; and bibliographic reference. Data were tabulated and arranged in a parasite-host table., Results: Some endemic genera, such as Callithrix, are widely distributed geographically across Brazil and have characteristics of adaptation to different habitats due to their flexibility in diet and behavior. These factors can make them subject to a greater diversity of parasites and viruses in the country. Here, we identified 68 parasitic taxa, belonging to the clades protozoa (n = 22), helminths (n = 34), ectoparasites (n = 7), and viruses (n = 5). Out of this total, 19 have zoonotic potential. Of the six existing marmoset species, Callithrix jacchus was the most frequent in studies, and Callithrix flaviceps did not have reports. All regions of the country had occurrences, mainly the Southeast, where 54% of the cases were reported. In 46% of the reported parasites and viruses, it was not possible to identify the corresponding species., Conclusion: We conclude that in part of the works the identification methods are not being specific, which makes it difficult to identify the species that affects Callithrix spp. Furthermore, the studies present geographic disparities, being concentrated in the southeast of the country, making it impossible to have a more uniform analysis of the findings. During May 2022 and again in March 2023, 5 quillbacks, Carpiodes cyprinus, were collected from the Verdigris River, Wagoner County, Oklahoma (n = 1), and the Black River, Lawrence County, Arkansas (n = 4), and their gill, gallbladder, fins, integument, musculature, and other major organs were macroscopically examined for myxozoans. Gill lamellae from the single quillback from the Verdigris River was infected with a new myxozoan, Thelohanellus oklahomaensis n. sp. Qualitative and quantitative morphological data were obtained from fresh and formalin-fixed preserved myxospores, and molecular data consisted of a 1,767 base pair sequence of the partial small subunit (SSU) ribosomal RNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis grouped T. oklahomaensis n. sp. with myxozoans known to infect North American catostomids and Eurasian cyprinids. Histological examination localized plasmodia to an intralamellar developmental site and revealed a possible vestige of a second polar capsule. Although plasmodia markedly expanded lamellae, there were no associated epithelial or inflammatory changes. The present study describes Coccomyxa bragantinensis n. sp., which was found parasitising the gallbladder of the Coco Sea catfish, Bagre bagre, captured off Ajuruteua beach, in the region of Bragança in Pará state, northern Brazil. Most (77.5%) of the 40 fish specimens examined (31/40) had myxospores floating in the bile liquid. These spores are partially ellipsoid, with a tapering anterior extremity and a rounded, elongated posterior extremity with a single piriform polar capsule containing a helicoidal polar filament, with 5-6 coils. A partial sequence of 957 bp of the SSU rDNA gene was obtained from the specimens and deposited in GenBank (xxx). Animal parasitic diseases not only have an economic impact, but also have serious social and public health impacts. Although antiparasitic drugs can treat these diseases, it seems difficult for users to comprehensively utilize the information, due to incomplete and difficult data collection. Thus, there is an urgent need to establish a comprehensive database, that includes parasitic diseases and related drugs. In this paper, we develop a knowledge database dedicated to collecting and analyzing animal parasitic diseases and related drugs, named Animal Parasitic Diseases and Drugs Database (APDDD). The current version of APDDD includes animal parasitic disease data of 8 major parasite classifications that cause common parasitic diseases and 96 subclass samples mined from many literature and authoritative books, as well as 182 antiparasitic drugs. Furthermore, we utilized APDDD data to add a knowledge graph representing the relationships between parasitic diseases, drugs, and the targeted gene of drugs acting on parasites. Purpose: The motive of the present study was to investigate incidences of myxozoan parasite infection in commercially important fishes and their characterization using morphological attributes and molecular approach., Methods: The specimens of cultured Cirrhinus mrigala were sampled and various organs were examined. The plasmodia were detected on the scales. The identification of species was based on the myxospore morphology and 18S rDNA sequence analyses. For phylogenetic analysis, maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian inference (BI) methods were employed. The SEM and histological studies were performed to assess the damage to the scales., Results: The infected fishes had white patches on the scales and red haemorrhagic lesions on the skin. The plasmodia of Myxobolus coriumicus n. sp. were located on the dorsal surface of the scale towards its exposed part. SEM study indicated that lepidonts were damaged in the infected scales. The myxospores were spherical in shape, 9.0-10.0 × 8.0-9.0 [Formula: see text]m in size, with two ovoid equal polar capsules 3.13-4.0 × 2.03-2.33 [Formula: see text]m in size, having 4-5 sutural edge markings at the posterior-lateral margins of the shell valves and binucleated sporoplasm. BLAST search based on 18S rDNA revealed 93.87% sequence similarity with M. rewensis, (MZ230381). Proliferative kidney disease caused by the myxozoan parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae has been actively studied in juvenile salmonids for decades. However, very little is known about parasite prevalence and its geographical and intra-host distribution at older life stages. We screened T. bryosalmonae among adult sea trout (Salmo trutta) (n = 295) collected along the Estonian Baltic Sea coastline together with juvenile trout from 33 coastal rivers (n = 1752) to assess spatial infection patterns of the adult and juvenile fish. The parasite was detected among 38.6% of adult sea trout with the prevalence increasing from west to east, and south to north, along the coastline. A similar pattern was observed in juvenile trout. Infected sea trout were also older than uninfected fish and the parasite was detected in sea trout up to the age of 6 years. Analysis of intra-host distribution of the parasite and strontium to calcium ratios from the otoliths revealed that (re)infection through freshwater migration may occur among adult sea trout. The results of this study indicate that T. bryosalmonae can persist in a brackish water environment for several years and that returning sea trout spawners most likely contribute to the parasite life cycle by transmitting infective spores., (© 2023 The Authors. Myxozoans are a unique group of microscopic parasites that infect mainly fishes. These extremely reduced cnidarians are highly diverse and globally distributed in freshwater and marine habitats. Myxozoan diversity dimension is unknown in Mexico, a territory of an extraordinary biological diversity. This study aimed to explore, for the first time, myxozoan parasite diversity from fishes of the Neotropical region of Mexico. We performed a large morphological and molecular screening using host tissues of 22 ornamental and food fish species captured from different localities of Veracruz, Oaxaca and Chiapas. Myxozoan infections were detected in 90% of the fish species, 65% of them had 1 or 2 and 35% had 3 and up to 8 myxozoan species. Forty-one putative new species were identified using SSU rDNA phylogenetic analyses, belonging to two main lineages: polychaete-infecting (5 species) and oligochaete-infecting (36 species) myxozoans; from those we describe 4 new species: Myxidium zapotecus sp. n., Zschokkella guelaguetza sp. n., Ellipsomyxa papantla sp. n. and Myxobolus zoqueus sp. n. Myxozoan detection increased up to 6 × using molecular screening, which represents 3.7 × more species detected than by microscopy. Myxobolus lentisuturalis is a myxozoan parasite of piscine muscle that has been described in goldfish Carassius auratus and Prussian carp Carassius gibelio. This report documents a naturally occurring infection of M. lentisuturalis in a population of farmed goldfish in the USA. Postmortem examination was performed on 4 affected goldfish. Gross findings included large cystic cavities along the dorsal midline filled with caseous exudate. Histopathology revealed myxozoan plasmodia and spores in the epaxial muscles with varying degrees of granulomatous and necrotizing myositis accompanied by lymphohistiocytic meningoencephalitis. Spore morphology and dimensions were consistent with M. lentisuturalis, as observed by light microscopy. PCR and sequence analysis of the small subunit ribosomal DNA of infected muscle samples from 2 goldfish confirmed the parasite to have 99-100% nucleotide identity to M. lentisuturalis sequences recovered from similar cases of this parasite infecting goldfish in China and Italy and Prussian carp in China. This is the first reported case of M. lentisuturalis in the USA and furthers the understanding of the pathogenicity of this under-described parasite.

Myxobolus species represents a group of cosmopolitan metazoan parasites commonly harbored in the farmed and wild fish populations. Here, a species of Myxobolus is found in the kidney of an exotic mrigal Cirrhinus mrigala feral in the Yangtze River and utilized for an integrative characterization. Ellipsoidal myxospores are measured at 15.68 ± 0.8 (13.93-17.11) × 11.42 ± 0.54 (10.34-12.3) × 7.94 ± 0.35 (7.58-8.5) μm in dimension. The polar capsules are pyriform, and unequal in size. The morphological and morphometric characteristics of the present isolates are distinct from those of other congeners. Molecularly, the pairwise comparison based on the SSU rDNA sequence indicates that the present amplicon does not match any sequences available in the GenBank database and shares the highest similarity of 92.12% to Myxobolus pavlovskii (MG520369). Accordingly, we propose a name Myxobolus shuifuensis sp. n. for the present isolates. Phylogenetical trees indicate an apparent host-associated phylogenetic pattern. M. shuifuensis sp. n. groups loosely with other Myxobolus species isolated from Cirrhinus fish. Insead, it forms a sister clade to some myxosporeans belonging to the Thelohanellus genus. A new myxosporean parasite, Ortholinea nupchi n. sp. (Myxozoa; Bivalvulida), was isolated from the urinary bladder of the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus cultured on Jeju Island, Korea. Mature spores were subspherical in the valvular and apical views and ellipsoidal in the sutural view. The spores measured 7.6 ± 0.5 μm in length, 6.7 ± 0.3 μm in thickness, and 7.3 ± 0.5 μm in width. Two pyriform polar capsules measured 3.2 ± 0.1 μm in length and 2.7 ± 0.1 μm in width and were located at the same level at the anterior half of the myxospores. The suture line was straight in the middle of the spores, and the surface ridges ranged between five and seven, forming an intricate pattern. The result of the 18S rDNA comparison showed ≤ 93.0% similarity with other Ortholinea species. The phylogenetic tree demonstrated that O. nupchi n. sp. was closest to O. auratae and clustered with oligochaete-infecting myxosporeans (OIM) having urinary system infection tropism. Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae is a myxozoan parasite and the causative agent of proliferative kidney disease (PKD), a serious, temperature-dependent and emerging disease affecting salmonid fish. It was first identified in Iceland in 2008, from Arctic charr inhabiting a shallow lowland lake. The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution and prevalence of macroscopic and subclinical T. bryosalmonae infections in Icelandic salmonids and compare different time periods, in context with depths, volumes, altitudes and areas of the lakes and fish age. Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) from 34 lakes, sampled between 1994-1998 and 2009-2017, were examined for macroscopic signs of PKD (n = 2,151) and the presence of T. bryosalmonae infections (n = 1,424). In the earlier period, 43% of lakes (10/23) harboured T. bryosalmonae -infected fish. The mean prevalence in those lakes was 62.1%, being most common in shallow lowland lakes whilst deeper lakes at high altitudes were all free from infection. Only a single fish from one lake showed macroscopic signs of PKD, a shallow lowland lake in southwestern Iceland. In the latter period, T. bryosalmonae was found in 16/18 lakes studied (89%), with a mean prevalence of 78-79% (excluding T.b. free lakes), being most common in the smaller, shallower lakes at lower alttudes. Macroscopic signs of PKD were observed in 11 of 18 of the lakes studied (61%) with prevalences up to 67%, most common in younger fish inhabiting small shallow lowland lakes. The results indicate that the distribution of T. bryosalmonae and the presence of PKD in Iceland have increased over the last few decades. The disease was almost non-existent in the 1990s but has become very common during the last decade or two. Myxobolus zhaltsanovae n. sp., is described from the gills of gibel carp Carassius gibelio found during a survey of myxozoans from the watershed of Lake Baikal, Russia, based on morphological and molecular characterizations. Plasmodia of M. zhaltsanovae n. sp. develop extravascularly and measure 500-1000 μm long, 25-100 μm wide. The myxospore is circular to oval, measuring 13.23 ± 0.09 (11.3-14.8) µm (mean ± SD, range) in length, 10.19 ± 0.07 (9.1-11.4) µm in width, and 6.49 ± 0.12 (5.4-7.2) µm in thickness. Polar capsules are unequal and subspherical; measurements of polar capsules are: length 5.62 ± 0.06 (4.7-6.7), width 3.44 ± 0.04 (2.4-4.4) µm and length 3.42 ± 0.05 (2.5-4.1), width 1.94 ± 0.04 (1.3-3.3) µm. Phylogenetic analysis with the 18S rDNA gene shows M. zhaltsanovae n. sp. as a sister species of the subclade formed by M. musseliusae, M. tsangwuensis, and M. basilamellaris, which infect common carp Cyprinus carpio.

Purpose: Myxobolus planilizae n. sp. is described from the intestinal muscles of the largescale mullet Planiliza macrolepis from Cochin backwaters, Kerala, India., Methods: Host fishes inhabiting Cochin backwaters were collected using Chinese nets/gill nets. The morphometry and morphological studies were carried out using Nomarski differential interference contrast (DIC) optics, followed by molecular and phylogenetic analyses of the small subunit ribosomal DNA gene (SSU rDNA)., Results: Plasmodia small, pale white, and infect the muscles of the intestine; measured 0.13-0.22 (0.17) × 0.09-0.14 (0.13) mm. Mature myxospores pyriform in valvular view, and biconvex in sutural and apical views with a short anterior extension, and measured 7.45-8.75 (8.40) × 6.04-6.86 (6.25) µm. Shell valves with sutural ornamentations. Polar capsules two, equal, pyriform, measured 3.96-4.54 (4.45) × 2.22-2.94 (2.52) µm. Polar filament arranged in five coils, measured 24.41-34.44 (28.52) µm when extruded. In morphological and morphometric analysis, the present species exhibit remarkable variations from other species of the genus Myxobolus. In molecular analysis, the present species revealed the highest identity of 91.85% and divergence of 9.95% with related species, underlining its molecular uniqueness. In phylogenetic analysis, species of Myxobolus infecting mullets appeared as a separate clade and the present species was positioned distinctly with a high bootstrap value., Conclusions: Based on morphology, morphometry, and molecular and phylogenetic analyses, along with tissue/host specificities and geographic location, the present parasite is treated as new and is reported here as M. planilizae n. sp., (© 2022. Ecological interactions resulting from human interference and environmental changes have implications for human health and the host animals involved in the parasite cycles. Considering the scarcity of surveys of the parasitic fauna of non-human primates in northeastern Brazil, the objective of this study was to investigate the infection by gastrointestinal parasites in free-ranging common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) in the State of Sergipe. Fecal samples were collected from 52 animals captured in three protected areas. Most of the samples consisted of adult females and 57% were infected with at least one of the 12 identified parasite taxa. The most frequent intestinal parasite was Prosthenorchis sp., followed by Spiruridae, Entamoeba spp. and Strongylida order. Myxobolus spp. are parasites of wide diversity and distribution in fish, both in the natural environment and in freshwater or marine farming systems around the world and are sometimes associated with severe disease in their hosts (Schmahl et al. 1989; Lom and Dyková, 1995; Eiras et al. 2021). The white mullet Mugil curema Valenciennes, 1836 is a pelagic fish of the Mugilidae family widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean (Froese & Pauly 2022). Recently, Myxobolus curemae Vieira, Agostinho, Negrelli, Silva, Azevedo and Abdallah, 2022 was described from white mullets Mugil curema Valenciennes, 1836 in Brazil (Vieira et al. 2022). In the current work, Myxobolus sp. was identified with the same biological and morphological characteristic features of M. curemae from white mullets from the Jacarepaguá Lagoon Complex in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in addition to being 100% identical for a genic region of the nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA. However, this Myxobolus sp. was also similar to Myxobolus hani Faye, Kpatcha, Diebakate, Fall and Toguebaye, 1999, which was described from white mullets in Senegal, Africa, without molecular identification (Faye et al. 1999). Therefore, this current work makes observations on these Myxobolus spp. which are morphologically and biologically similar, and that could establish M. curemae as a junior synonymy of M. hani.

Myxosporeans are widespread cnidarian parasites that usually parasitize fish as part of their complex life cycle, thus constituting a potential threat for the aquaculture industry. White seabream Diplodus sargus (L.) is a commercially valuable sparid fish reared in Southern European aquacultures. Nonetheless, knowledge on myxosporean infections potentially harming the sustainable production of this fish is extremely limited. In this study, a myxosporean survey was conducted on D. sargus specimens reared in two Southern Portuguese fish farms. Two coelozoic myxosporeans were detected infecting the gall bladder, and are herein reported based on microscopic and molecular procedures: Ceratomyxa sargus n. sp. and Zschokkella auratis Rocha et al., 2013, previously described from reared stocks of gilthead seabream Sparus aurata in the same geographic locality. Ceratomyxa sargus n. sp. is the 12 th species of the genus to be reported from Southern European sparids, reinforcing a substantial radiation of Ceratomyxa within this fish family and geographic region. SSU rRNA-based Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses revealed C. sargus n. sp. positioned separately from other sparid-infecting Ceratomyxa spp. reported from Southern European countries, demonstrating that this species does not share a more immediate common ancestor with its closest relatives based on host affinity and geography. The recognition of a novel sparid-infecting lineage within the Ceratomyxa clade strengthens the contention that this genus entered sparid fish multiple times, namely in the Southern European region. The identification of Zschokkella auratis infections in D. sargus demonstrates that host shift has occurred among sparids reared in the Southern Portuguese coast. This agrees with the broad host specificity that is usually attributed to this genus, and that may be suggested to be the outcome of the capacity of the Zschokkella morphotype to undergo host shift/switch based on our findings and the limited molecular data available for this genus. A new marine myxosporean, Myxidium tunisiensis n. sp. (Myxosporea: Myxidiidae), is described infecting the gallbladder of the rough skate Raja radula Delaroche, 1908 (Chondrichthyes: Rajidae) harvested from the Bay of Bizerte, Tunisia. Observed stages of the parasite were floating free in the bile. Plasmodia, disporic or polysporic, contain disporic pansporoblasts measuring 23.0-27.2 μm in maximum diameter and 21.0-25.5 μm in minimum diameter. Mature myxospores, which are elongated, typically fusiform measured 18.6 ± 1.7 (17.2-22.0) μm in length, 8.6 ± 1.2 (7.2-11.2) μm in width and 8.2 ± 0.9 (6.4-10.1) in thickness. Myxospore valves are symmetrical with 9-10 longitudinal striations. Two polar capsules, pyriform, were equal in size, measuring 5.8 ± 0.4 (5.2-6.7) μm in length and 3.1 ± 0.2 (3.0-3.2) μm in width, with 5-6 polar filament turns. The infection was prevalent throughout the year with the highest prevalence in autumn (81.8%) and the lowest in winter (32.3%). The seasonal prevalence of M. tunisiensis n. sp. in the Bay of Bizerte appeared to fluctuate according to seawater temperature. The morphological and morphometrical differences with all Myxidium spp. described so far, complemented by molecular data, prove clearly that the present species is a new member of the genus Myxidium. The SSU rDNA phylogenetic analyses revealed that Myxidium tunisiensis n. sp. clustered within the oligochaete-gallbladder clade in a basal position to the marine subclade of Myxidium baueri and Myxidium coryphaenoideum. While the new species branching pattern is stable in the ML and the BI analyses, it changed in the MP analysis. Two new species of Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 (Bivalvulida: Myxobolidae) are described from the gill and scales of smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu Lacepède, 1802 [Centrarchiformes: Centrarchidae]) from the Watauga River, French Broad River Basin, North Carolina, United States. Myxobolus intralamina n. sp. infects the lumen of the lamellar arterioles and Myxobolus infrabractea n. sp. infects the inner surface of the scale. They differ from all congeners by a combination of myxospore dimensions, polar tubule coil count, and the presence or absence of an iodinophilic vacuole in the sporoplasm and an intercapsular process. A phylogenetic analysis of the small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) recovered M. intralamina n. sp. sister to Myxobolus lepomis and Myxobolus branchiarum and M. infrabractea n. sp. sister to Myxobolus micropterii in a clade composed of five Myxobolus spp. infecting centrarchids and Henneguya spp. (Myxobolidae) infecting percids. Histological sections of infected gill revealed intra-lamellar plasmodia of M. intralamina n. sp. within the lumen of the lamellar arterioles and plasmodia of M. infrabractea n. sp. developing beneath the scales.
