Abstract

When neglecting capillarity, two-phase incompressible flow in porous media is modelled as a scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law. A change in the rock type results in a change of the flux function. Discretizing in one-dimensional with a finite volume method, we investigate two numerical fluxes, an extension of the Godunov flux and the upstream mobility flux, the latter being widely used in hydrogeology and petroleum engineering. Then, in the case of a changing rock type, one can give examples when the upstream mobility flux does not give the right answer., Comment: A preprint to be published in Computational Geosciences

Abstract

International audience; The purpose of this work is to use a variational method to identify some of the parameters of one-dimensional models for blood flow in arteries. These parameters can be fit to approach as much as possible some data coming from experimental measurements or from numerical simulations performed using more complex models. A nonlinear least squares approach to parameter estimation was taken, based on the optimization of a cost function. The resolution of such an optimization problem generally requires the efficient and accurate computation of the gradient of the cost function with respect to the parameters. This gradient is computed analytically when the one-dimensional hyperbolic model is discretized with a second order Taylor-Galerkin scheme. An adjoint approach was used. Some preliminary numerical tests are shown. In these simulations, we mainly focused on determining a parameter that is linked to the mechanical properties of the arterial walls, the compliance. The synthetic data we used to estimate the parameter were obtained from a numerical computation performed with a more accurate model: a three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction model. The first results seem to be promising. In particular, it is worth noticing that the estimated compliance which gives the best fit is quite different from the values that are commonly used in practice.; Le but de ce travail est d'identifier certains des paramètres existant dans des modèles 1-d d'écoulement sanguin dans des artères. Ces paramètres peuvent permettre d'approcher autant que possible des configurations géométriques réalistes ou des données expérimentales. Une approche de l'estimation de paramètres par moindres carrés non-linéaires a été adoptée, basée sur l'optimisation d'une certaine fonction coût. La résolution d'un tel problème de minimisation requiert le calcul efficace et précis du gradient de la fonction coût par rapport aux paramètres. Le gradient est discrétisé analytiquement dans le cas d'une discrétisation du modèle hyperbolique 1-d par le schema de Taylor-Galerkin. Une approche par l'état adjoint a été employée. Des premiers résultats numériques sont fournis. Pour ces simulations, nous nous sommes concentrés sur la détermination d'un paramètre lié aux propriétés mécaniques de la paroi artérielle. Les données synthétiques utilisées pour l'estimation de ce paramètre ont été obtenues à partir d'un modèle beaucoup plus raffiné : un modèle 3-d d'interaction fluide-structure. Les résultats semblent intéressants car le paramètre estimé est assez différent de ce à quoi on s'attendrait a priori.

Abstract

International audience; This paper introduces and analyses a new algorithm for minimizing a convex function subject to a finite number of convex inequality constraints. It is assumed that the Lagrangian of the problem is strongly convex. The algorithm combines interior point methods for dealing with the inequality constraints and quasi-Newton techniques for accelerating the convergence. Feasibility of the iterates is progressively enforced thanks to shift variables and an exact penalty approach. Global and q-superlinear convergence is obtained for a fixed penalty parameter; global convergence to the analytic center of the optimal set is ensured when the barrier parameter tends to zero, provided strict complementarity holds.

Abstract

During the terminal part of their development, ovarian follicles become totally dependent on gonadotropin supply to pursue their growth and maturation. Both gonadotropins, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteining hormone (LH), operate mainly through stimulatory G protein-coupled receptors, their signal being transduced by the activation of the enzyme adenylyl cyclase and the production of second-messenger cAMP. In this paper, we develop a mathematical model of the dynamics of the coupling between FSH receptor stimulation and cAMP synthesis. This model takes the form of a set of nonlinear, ordinary differential equations that describe the changes in the different states of FSH receptors (free, bound, phosphorylated, and internalized), coupling efficiency (activated adenylyl cyclase), and cAMP response. Classical analysis shows that, in the case of constant FSH signal input, the system converges to a unique, stable equilibrium state, whose properties are here investigated. The system also appears to be robust to nonconstant input. Particular attention is given to the influence of biologically relevant parameters on cAMP dynamics.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of this experiment was to examine the preattentive processing of syllables in 9–11-year-old children with dyslexia and matched controls using the Mismatch Negativity (MMN), an auditory Event-Related brain potential (ERP) related to preattentive discrimination. Children were presented with a sequence of syllables that included standards (the syllable “Ba”) and deviants in vowel frequency, vowel duration and Voice Onset Time (VOT) that were either close to or far from the standard (Small and Large deviants). No between-group differences were found for frequency deviants. However, whilst normal-reading children showed larger MMNs to Large than to Small deviants in vowel duration and VOT, no such deviance size effect was found in children with dyslexia. These results are taken to indicate that the preattentive processing of vowel duration and VOT is impaired in children with dyslexia, with no impairment in the processing of vowel frequency deviants. By revealing processing deficits of both duration and VOT deviants, these results suggest a strong link between acoustical and phonological processing.

Abstract

International audience; We transpose an optimal control technique to the image segmentation problem. The idea is to consider image segmentation as a parameter estimation problem. The parameter to estimate is the color of the pixels of the image. We use the adaptive parameterization technique which builds iteratively an optimal representation of the parameter into uniform regions that form a partition of the domain, hence corresponding to a segmentation of the image. We minimize an error function during the iterations, and the partition of the image into regions is optimally driven by the gradient of this error. The resulting segmentation algorithm inherits desirable properties from its optimal control origin: soundness, robustness, and flexibility.; Nous transposons une technique de contrôle optimal au problème de segmentation d'image. L'idée est de considérer la segmentation d'image comme un problème d'estimation de paramètre où le paramètre à estimer est la couleur des pixels de l'image. Nous utilisons la technique de paramétrisation adaptative qui construit itérativement une représentation optimale du paramètre en régions uniformes qui forment une partition du domaine, et correspondent ainsi à une segmentation de l'image. Nous minimisons une fonction d'erreur au cours des itérations, et le partitionnement de l'image en régions est piloté de façon optimale par le gradient de cette erreur. L'algorithme de segmentation résultant hérite de propriétés intéressantes de son origine contrôle optimal: fondement, robustesse et flexibilité.

Abstract

We consider a model for fluid flow in a porous medium with a fracture. In this model, the fracture is represented as an interface between subdomains, where specific equations have to be solved. In this article we analyse the discrete problem, assuming that the fracture mesh and the subdomain meshes are completely independent, but that the geometry of the fracture is respected. We show that despite this non-conformity, first order convergence is preserved with the lowest order Raviart-Thomas(-Nedelec) mixed finite elements. Numerical simulations confirm this result.; Nous étudions un modèle d'écoulement dans milieu poreux contenant une fracture. Dans ce modèle, la fracture est représentée comme une interface entre sous-domaines, au sein de laquelle des équations spécifiques doivent être résolues. Dans le présent article, nous analysons le problème discret, en faisant l'hypothèse que le maillage de la fracture et les maillages des sous-domaines sont complètement indépendants, mais respectent toutefois la géométrie de la fracture. Nous montrons que malgré cette non-conformité, le premier ordre de convergence est conservé pour les éléments finis mixtes de Raviart-Thomas(-Nedelec) de plus bas degré. Des simulations numériques confiment ce résultat.

Abstract

International audience; This article introduces a model for incompressible, two-phase flow in a porous medium with a fracture. The model is an extension to the case of two-phase flow of the model for single phase flow described in [1]. The model is a discrete fracture model in which the fractures are treated as interfaces of dimension n - 1 but in which there is fluid exchange between the fracture and the surrounding rock matrix. The matrix domain is effected by the fracture flow through a Robin type boundary condition along both sides of the fracture, while the fracture takes into account the flow in the matrix by means of a source term representing the discontinuity across the fracture of the flux. Twophase flow is modeled using the global pressure formulation in which the unknowns are the global pressure and the wetting phase saturation; see [2]. The case of different rock types in the (n - 1)-dimensional fracture domain and in the n-dimensional matrix rock domain is considered.

Abstract

Popular finite difference numerical schemes for the resolution of the one-dimensional acoustic wave equation are well-known to be convergent. We present a comprehensive formalization of the simplest one and formally prove its convergence in Coq. The main difficulties lie in the proper definition of asymptotic behaviors and the implicit way they are handled in the mathematical pen-and-paper proofs. Abstract

We present here the definition of the reactive transport benchmark of Groupement Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Simulation for Nuclear Waste Management Problems. The aim of this benchmark is to propose a challenging test for numerical methods used for reactive transport modeling in porous media. In order to focus on numerical methods, the problem presented here is of quite a small size, both from a hydrodynamical and from a geochemical point of view. Though the chemical coefficients used in this benchmark are not taken from a real chemical system, they are realistic, and the test case is quite challenging.

Abstract

International audience; Multiphase flow modelling is a major issue in the assessment of groundwater pollution. Three-phase flows are commonly governed by mathematical models that associate a pressure equation with two saturation equations. These equations involve a number of secondary variables that reflect the fluid behaviour in a porous medium. To improve the computational efficiency of multiphase flow simulators, several simplified reformulations of three-phase flow equations have been proposed. However, they require the construction of new secondary variables adapted to the reformulated flow equations. In this article, two different approaches are compared to quantify these variables. A numerical example is given for a typical fine sand.

International audience; In order to analyze numerically inverse problems several techniques based on linear and nonlinear stability analysis are presented. These techniques are illustrated on the problem of estimating mobilities and capillary pressure in one-dimensional two-phase displacements in porous media that are performed in laboratories. This is an example of the problem of estimating nonlinear coefficients in a system of nonlinear partial differential equations.

Abstract

Modeling reactive transport in porous media, using a local chemical equilibrium assumption, leads to a system of advection-diffusion PDE's coupled with algebraic equations. When solving this coupled system, the algebraic equations have to be solved at each grid point for each chemical species and at each time step. This leads to a coupled non-linear system. In this paper a global solution approach that enables to keep the software codes for transport and chemistry distinct is proposed. The method applies the Newton-Krylov framework to the formulation for reactive transport used in operator splitting. The method is formulated in terms of total mobile and total fixed concentrations and uses the chemical solver as a black box, as it only requires that on be able to solve chemical equilibrium problems (and compute derivatives), without having to know the solution method. An additional advantage of the Newton-Krylov method is that the Jacobian is only needed as an operator in a Jacobian matrix times vector product. Abstract

QPAL is a piece of software that aims at solving a convex quadratic optimization problem with linear equality and inequality constraints. The implemented algorithm uses an augmented Lagrangian approach, which relaxes the equality constraints and deals explicitely with the bound constraints on the original and slack variables. The generated quadratic functions are minimized on the activated faces by a truncated conjugate gradient algorithm, interspersed with gradient projection steps. When the optimal value is finite, convergence occurs at a linear speed that can be prescribed by the user. Matrices can be strored in dense or sparse structures; in addition, the Hessian of the quadratic objective function may have a direct of inverse $\ell$-BFGS form. QPAL is written in Fortran-2003.

International audience; The DFLU numerical flux was introduced in order to solve hyperbolic scalar conservation laws with a flux function discontinuous in space. We show how this flux can be used to solve systems of conservation laws. The obtained numerical flux is very close to a Godunov flux. As an example we consider a system modeling polymer flooding in oil reservoir engineering.

Abstract

SQPpro is a piece of software that aims at solving a nonlinear optimization problem with nonlinear equality and inequality constraints. The functions defining the problem must be at least once differentiable. The implemented algorithm uses an SQP approach, which is a workable version of the Newton and quasi-Newton methods. The quadratic optimization that has to be solved at each iteration uses the solver QPAL. The constraint Jacobian matrices can be strored in dense or sparse structures; in addition the Hessian of the Lagrangien can be approximated by the BFGS (dense) or $\ell$-BFGS (sparse) formula. SQPpro is written in Fortran-2003.

Abstract

This thesis deals with numerical simulation of coupled models for flow and transport in porous media. We present a new method for coupling chemical reactions and transport by using a Newton-Krylov method, and we also present a model of flow in fractured media, based on a domain decomposition method that takes into account the case of intersecting fractures. This study is composed of three parts: the first part contains an analysis, and implementation, of various numerical methods for discretizing advection-diffusion problems, in particular by using operator splitting methods.The second part is concerned with a fully coupled method for modeling transport and chemistry problems. The coupled transport-chemistry model is described, after discretization in time, by a system of nonlinear equations. The size of the system, namely the number of grid points times the number a chemical species, precludes a direct solution of the linear system. To alleviate this difficulty, we solve the system by a Newton-Krylov method, so as to avoid forming and factoring the Jacobian matrix. In the last part, we present a model of flow in 3D for intersecting fractures, by using a domain decomposition method. The fractures are treated as interfaces between subdomains. We show existence and uniqueness of the solution, and we validate the model by numerical tests.; Cette thèse porte sur la simulation numérique de modèles couplés pour l'écoulement et le transport dans les milieux poreux. Nous présentons une nouvelle méthode de couplage entre les réactions chimiques et le transport en utilisant une méthode de Newton-Krylov, et nous étudions également un modèle d'écoulement en milieu fracturé qui traite l'intersection des fractures par une méthode de décomposition de domaine. Ce travail est divisé en trois parties : la première partie contient une analyse de différents schémas numériques pour la discrétisation des problèmes d'advection-diffusion, notamment par une technique de séparation d'opérateurs, ainsi que leur mise en oeuvre informatique, dans un code industriel. La deuxième partie, qui est la contribution majeure de cette thèse, est consacrée à la modélisation et à l'implémentation d'une méthode de couplage globale pour le transport réactif. Le système couplé transport-chimie est décrit, après discrétisation en temps, par un système d'équations non linéaires. La taille du système sous-jacent, à savoir le nombre de points de grille multiplié par le nombre d'espèces chimiques, interdit la résolution du système linéaire par une méthode directe. Pour remédier à cette difficulté, nous utilisons une méthode de Newton-Krylov qui évite de former et de factoriser la matrice Jacobienne. Dans la dernière partie, nous présentons un modèle d'écoulement dans un milieu fracturé tridimensionnel, basé sur une méthode de décomposition de domaine, et qui traite l'intersection des fractures. Nous démontrons l'existence et l'unicité de la solution, et nous validons le modèle par des tests numériques.

Abstract

International audience; The estimation of distributed parameters in partial differential equations (PDE) from measures of the solution of the PDE may lead to under-determination problems. The choice of a parameterization is a usual way of adding a-priori information by reducing the number of unknowns according to the physics of the problem. The refinement indicators algorithm provides a fruitful adaptive parameterization technique that parsimoniously opens the degrees of freedom in an iterative way. We present a new general form of the refinement indicators algorithm that is applicable to the estimation of multi-dimensional parameters in any PDE. In the linear case, we state the relationship between the refinement indicator and the decrease of the usual least-squares data misfit objective function. We give numerical results in the simple case of the identity model, and this application reveals the refinement indicators algorithm as an image segmentation technique.; L'estimation de paramètres distribués dans des équations aux dérivées partielles (EDP) à partir de mesures de la solution de l'EDP peut mener à des problèmes de sous-détermination. Le choix d'une paramétrisation est un moyen usuel pour ajouter de l'information a priori en réduisant le nombre d'inconnues en relation avec la physique du problème. L'algorithme des indicateurs de raffinement fourni une technique de paramétrisation adaptative fructueuse qui ouvre parcimonieusement les degrés de liberté de façon itérative. Nous présentons une nouvelle forme générale de l'algorithme des indicateurs de raffinement qui s'applique à l'estimation des paramètres multi-dimensionnels dans toute EDP. Dans le cas linéaire, nous établissons le lien entre l'indicateur de raffinement et la décroissance de la fonction objectif des moindres carrés quantifiant l'erreur aux données. Nous donnons des résultats numériques pour le cas simple du modèle identité, et cette application permet de voir l'algorithme des indicateurs de raffinement comme une technique de segmentation d'image.

Abstract

We introduce a new global pressure formulation for immiscible three-phase compressible flows in porous media which is fully equivalent to the original equations, unlike the one introduced in \cite{CJ86}. In this formulation, the total volumetric flow of the three fluids and the global pressure follow a classical Darcy law, which simplifies the resolution of the pressure equation. However, this global pressure formulation exists only for Total Differential (TD) three-phase data, which depend only on two functions of saturations and global pressure: the global capillary pressure and the global mobility. Hence we introduce a class of interpolation which constructs such TD-three-phase data from any set of three two-phase data (for each pair of fluids) which satisfy a TD-compatibility condition.

Abstract

In this paper we are concerned with modeling single phase flow in a medium with known fractures. In particular we are interested in the case in which the flow rate in the fractures is large enough to make it appropriate to use Forchheimer's law for modeling the flow in the fractures even though the flow in the surrounding domain is such that Darcy's law is adequate. We describe a model in which the fractures are treated as interfaces. We also consider the case of intersecting fractures and the case of nonconforming meshes.

Abstract

A deterministic method for sensitivity analysis is developed and applied to a mathematical model for the simulation of flow in porous media. The method is based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the Jacobian matrix of the model. It is a local approach to sensitivity analysis providing a hierarchical classification of the directions in both the input space and of those in the output space reflecting the degree of sensitiveness of the latter to the former. Its low computational cost, in comparison with that of statistical approaches, allows the study of the variability of the results of the sensitivity analysis due to the variations of the input parameters of the model, and thus it can provide a quality criterion for the validity of more classical probabilistic global approaches. For the example treated here, however, this variability is weak, and deterministic and statistical methods yield similar sensitivity results.

Abstract

The questions of safety and uncertainty are central to feasibility studies for an underground nuclear waste storage site, in particular the evaluation of uncertainties about safety indicators which are due to uncertainties concerning properties of the subsoil or of the contaminants. The global approach through probabilistic Monte Carlo methods gives good results, but it requires a large number of simulations. The deterministic method investigated here is complementary. Based on the Singular Value Decomposition of the derivative of the model, it gives only local information, but it is much less demanding in computing time. The flow model follows Darcy's law and the transport of radionuclides around the storage site follows a linear convection-diffusion equation. Manual and automatic differentiation are compared for these models using direct and adjoint modes. A comparative study of both probabilistic and deterministic approaches for the sensitivity analysis of fluxes of contaminants through outlet channels with respect to variations of input parameters is carried out with realistic data provided by ANDRA. Generic tools for sensitivity analysis and code coupling are developed in the Caml language. The user of these generic platforms has only to provide the specific part of the application in any language of his choice. We also present a study about two-phase air/water partially saturated flows in hydrogeology concerning the limitations of the Richards approximation and of the global pressure formulation used in petroleum engineering.; Les questions de sûreté et d'incertitudes sont au centre des études de faisabilité pour un site de stockage souterrain de déchets nucléaires, en particulier l'évaluation des incertitudes sur les indicateurs de sûreté qui sont dues aux incertitudes sur les propriétés du sous-sol et des contaminants. L'approche globale par les méthodes probabilistes de type Monte Carlo fournit de bons résultats, mais elle demande un grand nombre de simulations. La méthode déterministe étudiée ici est complémentaire. Reposant sur la décomposition en valeurs singulières de la dérivée du modèle, elle ne donne qu'une information locale, mais elle est beaucoup moins coûteuse en temps de calcul. Le modèle d'écoulement suit la loi de Darcy et le transport des radionucléides autour du site de stockage est modélisé par une équation de diffusion-convection linéaire. Différentiation à la main et différentiation automatique sont comparées sur ces modèles en mode direct et en mode adjoint. Une étude comparée des deux approches probabiliste et déterministe pour l'analyse de la sensibilité des flux de contaminants aux exutoires par rapport aux variations des paramètres d'entrée est menée sur des données réalistes fournies par l'ANDRA. Des outils génériques d'analyse de sensibilité et de couplage de code sont développés en langage Caml. Ils permettent à l'utilisateur de ces plates-formes génériques de ne fournir que la partie spécifique de l'application dans le langage de son choix. Une étude sur les écoulements diphasiques eau/air partiellement saturés en hydrogéologie porte sur les limitations des approximations de Richards et de la formulation en pression globale issue du domaine pétrolier.

Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to model and develop numerical tools adapted to study underground water flow and the propagation of pollutants in a porous medium. The main motivation of this work is a benchmark from GDR Momas and Andra to simulate the 3-D propagation of radionuclides around a deep disposal of nuclear waste. Firstly, we construct a new mixed finite elements method suitable for general hexahedral meshes. Convergence of the method is proved and shown in numerical experiments.Secondly, we present a method of time dicretisation for the advection equation which allows for the use of different time steps in different subdomains in order to take into account of strong heterogeneities. Finally a numerical method for the calculation of the transport of contaminants is proposed. The techniques above were implemented in a 3-D code and simulation results are shown on the 3-D far field benchmark from GDR Momas and Andra.; L'objectif de cette thèse est de modéliser et de développer des outils numériques adaptés à l'étude de l'écoulement des eaux souterraines ainsi que la propagation des polluants en milieux poreux. La motivation de ce travail est un benchmark du GDR Momas et de l'Andra pour la simulation de la propagations 3-D des radionucléides autour d'un stockage profond de déchets nucléaires. Premièrement on a construit une nouvelle méthode d'éléments finis mixtes sur un maillage formé d'hexaèdres généraux. La convergence de la méthode est prouvée et confirmée par des tests numériques. Deuxièment, nous présentons une méthode de discrétisation en temps pour une équation d'advection telle que des pas de temps différents sont utilisés dans différents sous-domaines afin de prendre en compte les hétérogèneités.Enfin une méthode numérique pour le calcul de transport de contaminants est proposée. Les techniques précédentes sont implémentées en 3-D et des résultats numériques sont présentés sur le benchmark 3-D champ lointain du GDR Momas et de l'Andra.

Abstract

The Libopt environment is both a methodology and a set of tools that can be used for testing, comparing, and profiling solvers on problems belonging to various collections. These collections can be heterogeneous in the sense that their problems can have common features that differ from one collection to the other. Libopt brings a unified view on this composite world by offering, for example, the possibility to run any solver on any problem compatible with it, using the same Unix/Linux command. The environment also provides tools for comparing the results obtained by solvers on a specified set of problems. Most of the scripts going with the Libopt environment have been written in Perl.

Depuis le printemps 2006, nous avons suivi à travers les quatre vagues d’enquête du BPF le sentiment d’appartenance des Français aux notions de gauche et droite ainsi que la confiance qu’ils portent à l’une ou à l’autre pour gouverner le pays. La vague du Panel électoral français réalisée dans les deux semaines précédent le premier tour prolonge ces questions et permet de prendre la mesure du rapport au système politique au moment du vote des Français.

International audience; Dans cet article, nous nous intéressons à la modélisation de l'écoulement d'un fluide monophasique dans un milieu poreux faillé en utilisant les méthodes de décomposition de domaine. Le problème à résoudre est un problème d'interface non standard qui prend en compte l'écoulement dans les fractures. Dans l'approche proposée, la fracture est considérée comme une interface active, les conditions de transmission et les échanges entre la roche et la fracture font intervenir les propriétés de l'écoulement dans la fracture.

Abstract

International audience; S U M M A R Y Seismic reflection tomography is a method for determining a subsurface velocity model from the traveltimes of seismic waves reflecting on geological interfaces. From an optimization viewpoint , the problem consists in minimizing a non-linear least-squares function measuring the mismatch between observed traveltimes and those calculated by ray tracing in this model. The introduction of a priori information on the model is crucial to reduce the under-determination. The contribution of this paper is to introduce a technique able to take into account geological a priori information in the reflection tomography problem expressed as inequality constraints in the optimization problem. This technique is based on a Gauss-Newton (GN) sequential quadratic programming approach. At each GN step, a solution to a convex quadratic optimization problem subject to linear constraints is computed thanks to an augmented Lagrangian algorithm. Our choice for this optimization method is motivated and its original aspects are described. First applications on real data sets are presented to illustrate the potential of the approach in practical use of reflection tomography.

Abstract

La troisième vague du Baromètre politique français, réalisée à la fin 2006, a introduit plusieurs questions sur l'impact de Jean-Marie Le Pen et du Front national, qui permettent de développer l'analyse sur deux dimensions essentielles : quelle est aujourd'hui l'acceptation de Jean-Marie Le Pen dans la vie politique ? Quel est son impact électoral, ses limites et ses réserves possibles ? L'analyse des résultats fait apparaître un paradoxe. L'impact idéologique du lepénisme est important, proche sans doute des plus hauts niveaux qu'il ait connus depuis son émergence en 1983 ; son acceptation dans la vie démocratique du pays connaît une progression spectaculaire. Et, malgré cela, Jean-Marie Le Pen n'est pas assuré, à quatre mois du premier tour, de rééditer sa performance électorale de 2002 où il avait obtenu 17% des suffrages exprimés et, si l'on ajoute les voix de Bruno Mégret, 19% des suffrages qui étaient allés à l'extrême droite.

Le mécanisme de la confiance est au coeur de la relation entre les gouvernants et les gouvernés, particulièrement sous la Vème République qui a instauré l’élection du président de la République au suffrage universel. Le second tour oblige à un choix binaire entre les deux candidats les mieux placés. Sauf exception, cette situation s’ordonne autour d’un affrontement gauche/droite. Et quand ce n’est pas le cas, cela se traduit par une forte abstention comme en 1969 qui vit un duel entre le candidat gaulliste et le candidat centriste ou par un traumatisme de l’électorat comme en 2002 avec la qualification de Jean-Marie Le Pen pour affronter Jacques Chirac (...).

[Departement_IRSTEA]RE [TR1_IRSTEA]RIE / PHYLEAU; International audience; This paper presents a model to simulate overland flow genesis induced by shallow water table movements in hillslopes. Variably saturated subsurface flows are governed by the Richards equation discretized by continuous finite elements on unstructured meshes. An obstacle-type formulation is used to determine where saturation conditions, and thus seepage face conditions, are met at the ground surface. The impact of hillslope geometry, boundary conditions, and soil hydraulic parameters on model predictions is investigated on two-dimensional test cases at the metric and hectometric scales. The obstacle-type formulation is also compared with a more detailed model coupling subsurface and overland flow, the latter being described by the shallow water equations in the diffusive wave regime.

Abstract

International audience; The objective of this work is to improve the knowledge of the shock-to-detonation transition of nitromethane. The study is based on a spectral analysis in the range 0.3–0.85 µm, with a 28-nm resolution, during experiments of plane shock impacts on explosive targets at 8.6 GPa. The time-resolved radiant spectra show that the detonation front, the reaction products produced during the superdetonation, and the detonation products are semitransparent. The temperature and absorption coefficient profiles are determined from the measured spectra by a mathematical inversion method based on the equation of radiative transfer with Rayleigh scattering regime. Shocked nitromethane reaches at least 2500 K, showing the existence of local chemical reactions after shock entrance. Levels of temperature of superdetonation and steady-state detonation are also determined.

Abstract

L'évolution constante des activités humaines et les modifications possibles du climat dans le futur posent les questions de leur impact sur l'environnement immédiat des populations (ressource et approvisionnement en eau, qualité des sols, impact sur la production des cultures, pollutions de l'environnement, risque hydrologique, préservation de la biodiversité...). La prise en compte simultanée des activités humaines, des processus physiques, biologiques et chimiques et des conflits d'intérêt posent des questions nouvelles et complexes aux gestionnaires du territoire et aux décideurs. Ceci est particulièrement critique pour les échelles allant de la parcelle au paysage puis à la région. Des outils d'aide à la décision en matière de gestion du territoire sont nécessaires pour effectuer des diagnostics, confronter des points de vue et simuler des évolutions. La compréhension du fonctionnement des surfaces continentales à ces échelles pose de nombreuses questions encore non résolues comme la compréhension des interactions des divers processus et l'expression de ces interactions aux diverses échelles de temps et d'espace, l'impact des activités humaines présentes et passées sur ces processus ou encore le rôle de la structuration de l'espace d'origines naturelle ou anthropique. A terme, l'objectif du projet SEVE est de concevoir et de développer une modélisation intégrée du fonctionnement des surfaces continentales (continuum formé par le sol, la végétation, l'eau en circulation et la couche atmosphérique de surface) aux échelles du paysage et de la région. Cette modélisation doit représenter explicitement la structuration et les hétérogénéités de la surface et permettre de simuler les processus couplés impliqués dans les cycles de l'eau, du carbone, de l'azote et de substances polluantes. L'ambition est de mettre au point un outil de recherche de référence traitant de manière modulaire et évolutive les questions de la segmentation de l'espace, de la représentation des processus d'évolution et de transferts et de leurs interactions, de la paramétrisation du modèle et de sa validation. Les avancées réalisées grâce à cette plate-forme de modélisation complète devraient permettre de dériver des modèles opérationnels de fonctionnement des surfaces continentales. A l'issue de cette première phase du projet, le produit attendu et annoncé dans la proposition pour le PN/ACI « ECCO » 2003 est le cahier des charges de la modélisation SEVE. Il contient en particulier une spécification des besoins, une spécification fonctionnelle, un dossier d'architecture logicielle destiné à définir les concepts qui présideront à la réalisation informatique du modèle. Le Groupe SEVE a réalisé, en plus de ce programme et grâce aux moyens attribués par certaines tutelles, le cahier des charges d'une version 0 de SEVE dont le rôle est de disposer rapidement d'un outil de recherche démontrant la pertinence du concept de SEVE, ainsi que la proposition de solutions scientifiques et techniques pour la réalisation de cette première version et des travaux préliminaires à la construction de cette version. Les analyses réalisées avec la modélisation de la version 0 de SEVE ainsi que l'expérience acquise lors de sa construction, les avancées scientifiques et les prospectives sur les applications du modèle permettront par la suite d'alimenter le cahier des charges de la version 1 de SEVE.

International audience; We present a non-overlapping Schwarz waveform relaxation method for solving advection-reaction-diffusion problems in heterogeneous media. The do-main decomposition method is global in time, which permits the use of different time steps in different subdomains. We determine optimal non-local, and optimized Robin transmission conditions. We also present a space-time finite volume scheme es-pecially designed to handle such transmission conditions. We show the performance of the method on an example inspired from nuclear waste disposal simulations.

Abstract

We consider an augmented Lagrangian algorithm for minimizing a convex quadratic function subject to linear inequality constraints. Linear optimization is an important particular instance of this problem. We show that, provided the augmentation parameter is large enough, the constraint value converges globally linearly to zero. This property is proven by establishing first a global radial Lipschitz property of the reciprocal of the dual function subgradient. It is also a consequence of the proximal interpretation of the method. No strict complementarity assumption is needed. The result is illustrated by numerical experiments and algorithmic implications are discussed.

This constrained optimization is based on a Gauss-Newton Sequential Quadratic Programming approach. At each Gauss-Newton step, a solution to a strictly convex quadratic optimization problem subject to linear constraints is computed thanks to an augmented Lagrangian relaxation method. Our choice for this optimization method is motivated and its original aspects are described. The efficiency of the method is shown on applications on a 2D OBC real data set and on a 3D real data set: the introduction of constraints coming both from well logs and from geological knowledge allows to reduce the under-determination of the 2 inverse problems. Introduction Reflection tomography allows to determine a velocity model from the traveltimes of seismic waves reflecting on geological interfaces. This inverse problem is formulated as a nonlinear least-squares function which measures the mismatch between observed traveltimes and traveltimes computed by ray tracing method. This method has been successfully applied to real data sets (Ehinger et al, 2001, Broto et al, 2003). Nevertheless, the under-determination of the inverse problem generally requires the introduction of additional information on the model to reduce the number of admissible models. Penalization terms modelling this information can be added to the seismic terms in the objective functions but the tuning of the penalization weights may be tricky. In this paper, we propose to handle the a priori information by the introduction of equality and inequality constraints in the optimization process. This approach allows to introduce lot of constraints of different types, provided we have at our disposal an adequate constrained optimization method. We developed an original method designed for the tomographic inverse problem which presents the following characteristics: it is a large scale problem (10000-50000 unknowns), the forward operator is nonlinear and its computation may be expensive (large number of source-receiver couples, up to 500000), the problem is ill-conditioned. In the first part of this paper, the chosen method is motivated and its original aspects are shortly described (for further details, refer to Delbos et al, 2004). Applications on a 2D PP/PS real data set and on a 3D PP real data set are presented in a second part.

Abstract

Writing parallel programs is not easy, and debugging them is usually a nightmare. To cope with these difficulties, a structured approach to parallel programming using skeletons and templates based compilation techniques has been developed over the past years by several researchers, including the P3L group in Pisa. The system marries the functional programming language with the skeletons, yielding a powerful parallel programming system and methodology: allows the programmer to write and debug a sequential version of his program (which, if not easy, could be considered as routine), and then the parallel version is automatically deduced by recompilation of the source program. The invaluable advantage of this approach is stagging: the programmer has just to concentrate on the easy part, the sequential programming, relieving on the system to obtain the hard part, the parallel version. As an additional benefit, the semantics adequacy of the sequential and parallel versions of the program is no more the programmer's concern: it is now the entire responsability of the compiler. In this paper, we report on the successful application of in the field of scientific computing, where the system has been used to solve a problem of numerical code coupling, obtaining parallelization for free. The interaction has been quite successful, as, in the process of solving the coupling problem, a wealth of new ideas have emerged on the design of the system, which are now incorporated in the current version of : coloring of virtual and physical computing network nodes to specify their relative mapping, and the new notion of parfuns or parallel computing sub-networks reified as functions at the programmer's level. Those two notions both increase efficiency and ease the writing of programs, being a step to smoother integration of parallel computing into the functional programming paradigm.
