How much does AI assistance impact developer productivity? To date, the software engineering literature has provided a range of answers, targeting a diversity of outcomes: from perceived productivity to speed on task and developer throughput. Our randomized controlled trial with 96 full-time Google software engineers contributes to this literature by sharing an estimate of the impact of three AI features on the time developers spent on a complex, enterprise-grade task. We found that AI significantly shortened the time developers spent on task. Our best estimate of the size of this effect, controlling for factors known to influence developer time on task, stands at about 21\%, although our confidence interval is large. We also found an interesting effect whereby developers who spend more hours on code-related activities per day were faster with AI. Product and future research considerations are discussed. In particular, we invite further research that explores the impact of AI at the ecosystem level and across multiple suites of AI-enhanced tools, since we cannot assume that the effect size obtained in our lab study will necessarily apply more broadly, or that the effect of AI found using internal Google tooling in the summer of 2024 will translate across tools and over time., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

The Planck mission provided all-sky dust emission maps in the submm to mm range at an angular resolution of 5'. In addition, some specific sources can be observed at long wavelengths and higher resolution using ground-based telescopes. These observations are limited to small scales and require extensive data processing before they become available for scientific analysis. They also suffer from extended emission filtering. At present, we are still unable to fully understand the emissivity variations observed in different astrophysical environments at long wavelengths. It is therefore challenging to estimate any dust emission in the submm-mm at a better resolution than the 5' from Planck. In this analysis, based on supervised deep learning algorithms, we produced dust emission predictions in the two Planck bands centered at 850 mic and 1.38 mm, at the Herschel resolution (37''). Herschel data of Galactic environments, ranging from 160 to 500 mic and smoothed to 5', were used to train the neural network. Then, using Herschel data only, the model was applied to predict dust emission maps at 37''. The neural network is capable of reproducing dust emission maps of various Galactic environments. Remarkably, it also performs well for nearby extragalactic environments. This could indicate that large dust grains have similar properties in both our Galaxy and nearby galaxies, or at least that their spectral behaviors are comparable in Galactic and extragalactic environments. We provide dust emission prediction maps at 850 mic and 1.38 mm at the 37'' of several surveys: Hi-GAL, Gould Belt, Cold Cores, HERITAGE, Helga, HerM33es, KINGFISH, and VNGS. The ratio of these two wavelength brightness bands reveals a derived emissivity spectral index statistically close to 1 for all the surveys, which favors the hypothesis of a flattened dust emission spectrum for wavelengths larger than 850 mic., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (18 pages)

The millimeter continuum emission from galaxies provides important information about cold dust, its distribution, heating, and role in their InterStellar Medium (ISM). This emission also carries an unknown portion of the free-free and synchrotron radiation. The IRAM 30m Guaranteed Time Large Project, Interpreting Millimeter Emission of Galaxies with IRAM and NIKA2 (IMEGIN) provides a unique opportunity to study the origin of the millimeter emission on angular resolutions of <18" in a sample of nearby galaxies. As a pilot study, we present millimeter observations of two IMEGIN galaxies, NGC 2146 (starburst) and NGC 2976 (peculiar dwarf) at 1.15 mm and 2 mm. Combined with the data taken with Spitzer, Herschel, Plank, WSRT, and the 100m Effelsberg telescopes, we model the infrared-to-radio Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of these galaxies, both globally and at resolved scales, using a Bayesian approach to 1) dissect different components of the millimeter emission, 2) investigate the physical properties of dust, and 3) explore correlations between millimeter emission, gas, and Star Formation Rate (SFR). We find that cold dust is responsible for most of the 1.15 mm emission in both galaxies and at 2 mm in NGC 2976. The free-free emission emits more importantly in NGC 2146 at 2 mm. The cold dust emissivity index is flatter in the dwarf galaxy ($\beta = 1.3\pm 0.1$) compared to the starburst galaxy ($\beta = 1.7\pm 0.1$). Mapping the dust-to-gas ratio, we find that it changes between 0.004 and 0.01 with a mean of $0.006\pm0.001$ in the dwarf galaxy. In addition, no global balance holds between the formation and dissociation of H$_2$ in this galaxy. Relation extraction is a Natural Language Processing task aiming to extract relationships from textual data. It is a critical step for information extraction. Due to its wide-scale applicability, research in relation extraction has rapidly scaled to using highly advanced neural networks. Despite their computational superiority, modern relation extractors fail to handle complicated extraction scenarios. However, a comprehensive performance analysis of the state-of-the-art relation extractors that compile these challenges has been missing from the literature, and this paper aims to bridge this gap. The goal has been to investigate the possible data-centric characteristics that impede neural relation extraction. Based on extensive experiments conducted using 15 state-of-the-art relation extraction algorithms ranging from recurrent architectures to large language models and seven large-scale datasets, this research suggests that modern relation extractors are not robust to complex data and relation characteristics. It emphasizes pivotal issues, such as contextual ambiguity, correlating relations, long-tail data, and fine-grained relation distributions. In addition, it sets a marker for future directions to alleviate these issues, thereby proving to be a critical resource for novice and advanced researchers. Efficient handling of the challenges described can have significant implications for the field of information extraction, which is a critical part of popular systems such as search engines and chatbots. An experimental study on Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in rubidium (Rb) vapor cells containing inert gases at pressures $\le 5$ Torr is reported. Using an inert-gas-free Rb vapor cell as a reference, we measure frequency shift and line broadening of the EIT spectra in Rb vapor cells with argon, neon or nitrogen gases at pressures ranging from a few mTorr to 5 Torr. The results qualitatively agree with a pseudo-potential model that includes $s$-wave scattering between the Rydberg electron and the inert-gas atoms, and the effect of polarization of the inert-gas atoms by the Rydberg atoms. Our results are important for establishing Rydberg-EIT as an all-optical and non-intrusive spectroscopic probe for field diagnostics in low-pressure radio-frequency discharges., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The diagnosis of primary liver cancers (PLCs) can be challenging, especially on biopsies and for combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-CCA). We automatically classified PLCs on routine-stained biopsies using a weakly supervised learning method. Weak tumour/non-tumour annotations served as labels for training a Resnet18 neural network, and the network's last convolutional layer was used to extract new tumour tile features. Without knowledge of the precise labels of the malignancies, we then applied an unsupervised clustering algorithm. Our model identified specific features of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA). Despite no specific features of cHCC-CCA being recognized, the identification of HCC and iCCA tiles within a slide could facilitate the diagnosis of primary liver cancers, particularly cHCC-CCA. Method and results: 166 PLC biopsies were divided into training, internal and external validation sets: 90, 29 and 47 samples. Two liver pathologists reviewed each whole-slide hematein eosin saffron (HES)-stained image (WSI). After annotating the tumour/non-tumour areas, 256x256 pixel tiles were extracted from the WSIs and used to train a ResNet18. The network was used to extract new tile features. An unsupervised clustering algorithm was then applied to the new tile features. In a two-cluster model, Clusters 0 and 1 contained mainly HCC and iCCA histological features. The diagnostic agreement between the pathological diagnosis and the model predictions in the internal and external validation sets was 100% (11/11) and 96% (25/26) for HCC and 78% (7/9) and 87% (13/15) for iCCA, respectively. We present the first preliminary results of the project \textit{ICED}, focusing on the face-on galaxy NGC4254. We use the millimetre maps observed with NIKA2 at IRAM-30m, as part of the IMEGIN Guaranteed Time Large Program, and of a wide collection of ancillary data (multi-wavelength photometry and gas phase spectral lines) that are publicly available. We derive the global and local properties of interstellar dust grains through infrared-to-radio spectral energy distribution fitting, using the hierarchical Bayesian code HerBIE, which includes the grain properties of the state-of-the-art dust model, THEMIS. Our method allows us to get the following dust parameters: dust mass, average interstellar radiation field, and fraction of small grains. Also, it is effective in retrieving the intrinsic correlations between dust parameters and interstellar medium properties. We find an evident anti-correlation between the interstellar radiation field and the fraction of small grains in the centre of NGC4254, meaning that, at strong radiation field intensities, very small amorphous carbon grains are efficiently destroyed by the ultra-violet photons coming from newly formed stars, through photo-desorption and sublimation. In the framework of the IMEGIN Large Program, we used the NIKA2 camera on the IRAM 30-m telescope to observe the edge-on galaxy NGC 891 at 1.15 mm and 2 mm and at a FWHM of 11.1" and 17.6", respectively. Multiwavelength data enriched with the new NIKA2 observations fitted by the HerBIE SED code (coupled with the THEMIS dust model) were used to constrain the physical properties of the ISM. Emission originating from the diffuse dust disk is detected at all wavelengths from mid-IR to mm, while mid-IR observations reveal warm dust emission from compact HII regions. Indications of mm excess emission have also been found in the outer parts of the galactic disk. Furthermore, our SED fitting analysis constrained the mass fraction of the small (< 15 Angstrom) dust grains. We found that small grains constitute 9.5% of the total dust mass in the galactic plane, but this fraction increases up to ~ 20% at large distances (|z| > 3 kpc) from the galactic plane., Comment: To appear in Proc. of the mm Universe 2023 conference, Grenoble (France), June 2023, published by F. This study presents the first millimeter continuum mapping observations of two nearby galaxies, the starburst spiral galaxy NGC2146 and the dwarf galaxy NGC2976, at 1.15 mm and 2 mm using the NIKA2 camera on the IRAM 30m telescope, as part of the Guaranteed Time Large Project IMEGIN. These observations provide robust resolved information about the physical properties of dust in nearby galaxies by constraining their FIR-radio SED in the millimeter domain. After subtracting the contribution from the CO line emission, the SEDs are modeled spatially using a Bayesian approach. Maps of dust mass surface density, temperature, emissivity index, and thermal radio component of the galaxies are presented, allowing for a study of the relations between the dust properties and star formation activity (using observations at 24$\mu$m as a tracer). We report that dust temperature is correlated with star formation rate in both galaxies. The effect of star formation activity on dust temperature is stronger in NGC2976, an indication of the thinner interstellar medium of dwarf galaxies. As the millimeter wavelength range remains a largely unexplored spectral region for galaxies, the IMEGIN large program aims to map the millimeter continuum emission of 22 nearby galaxies at 1.15 and 2 mm. Using the high-resolution maps produced by the NIKA2 camera, we explore the existence of very cold dust and take possible contamination by free-free and synchrotron emission into account. We study the IR-to-radio emission coming from different regions along the galactic plane and at large vertical distances. New observations of NGC 891, using the NIKA2 camera on the IRAM 30m telescope, along with a suite of observations at other wavelengths were used to perform a multiwavelength study of the spectral energy distribution in the interstellar medium in this galaxy. This analysis was performed globally and locally, using the advanced hierarchical Bayesian fitting code, HerBIE, coupled with the THEMIS dust model. Our dust modeling is able to reproduce the near-IR to millimeter emission of NGC 891, with the exception of an excess at a level of 25% obtained by the NIKA2 observations in the outermost parts of the disk. The radio continuum and thermal dust emission are distributed differently in the disk and galaxy halo. Different dusty environments are also revealed by a multiwavelength investigation of the emission features. Our detailed decomposition at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths shows that emission at 1 mm is purely originated by dust. Radio components become progressively important with increasing wavelengths. Finally, we find that emission arising from small dust grains accounts for ~ 9.5% of the total dust mass, reaching up to 20% at large galactic latitudes. We propose an energy transfer model with a cubic atomic population dependence to accurately model the behavior of various reported high-power erbium-doped fluoride fiber lasers operating near 2.8 microns. We first show that the previously introduced weakly interacting (WI) and strongly interacting (SI) models are not adequate for precisely modeling such high-power erbium-doped fluoride fiber lasers. We compare results obtained with the WI and SI models to the proposed model by simulating 4 different highly doped (7 mol.%) fiber lasers previously reported in the literature. Laser efficiencies and powers are reproduced with great accuracy. In addition, four other independent fiber laser systems based on erbium doping concentrations varying from 1-6 mol.% are also simulated with good accuracy using the proposed model with the exact same set of spectroscopic parameters, which confirms its validity for various erbium doping concentrations. Hardware assurance of electronics is a challenging task and is of great interest to the government and the electronics industry. Physical inspection-based methods such as reverse engineering (RE) and Trojan scanning (TS) play an important role in hardware assurance. Therefore, there is a growing demand for automation in RE and TS. Many state-of-the-art physical inspection methods incorporate an iterative imaging and delayering workflow. In practice, uniform delayering can be challenging if the thickness of the initial layer of material is non-uniform. Moreover, this non-uniformity can reoccur at any stage during delayering and must be corrected. Therefore, it is critical to evaluate the thickness of the layers to be removed in a real-time fashion. A Bill of Materials (BoM) is a list of all components on a printed circuit board (PCB). Since BoMs are useful for hardware assurance, automatic BoM extraction (AutoBoM) is of great interest to the government and electronics industry. To achieve a high-accuracy AutoBoM process, domain knowledge of PCB text and logos must be utilized. In this study, we discuss the challenges associated with automatic PCB marking extraction and propose 1) a plan for collecting salient PCB marking data, and 2) a framework for incorporating this data for automatic PCB assurance. Background: Since Alitheia Core was proposed and subsequently retired, tools that support empirical studies of software projects continue to be proposed, such as Codeface, Codeface4Smells, GrimoireLab and SmartSHARK, but they all make different design choices and provide overlapping functionality. Aims: We seek to understand the design decisions adopted by these tools--the good and the bad--along with their consequences, to understand why their authors reinvented functionality already present in other tools, and to help inform the design of future tools. Method: We used action research to evaluate the tools, and to determine a set of principles and anti-patterns to motivate a new tool design. Results: We identified 7 major design choices among the tools: 1) Abstraction Debt, 2) the use of Project Configuration Files, 3) the choice of Batch or Interactive Mode, 4) Minimal Paths to Data, 5) Familiar Software Abstractions, 6) Licensing and 7) the Perils of Code Reuse. Building on the observed good and bad design decisions, we created our own tool architecture and implemented it as an R package. Conclusions: Tools should not require onerous setup for users to obtain data. Authors should consider the conventions and abstractions used by their chosen language and build upon these instead of redefining them. Tools should encourage best practices in experiment reproducibility by leveraging self-contained and readable schemas that are used for tool automation, and reuse must be done with care to avoid depending on dead code., Comment: This preprint has not undergone peer review (when applicable) or any post-submission improvements or corrections. In this paper we aim to constrain for the first time the dust emission in the mid-to-far infrared domain, in the LMC, with the use of the Spitzer IRS and MIPS SED data, combined with Herschel data. We also consider UV extinction predictions derived from modeling. We selected 10 regions observed as part of the SAGE-Spec program, to probe dust properties in various environments (diffuse, molecular and ionized regions). All data were smoothed to the 40arcsec angular resolution. The SEDs were modeled with DustEM models, using the standard Mathis RF, as well as three additional RFs, with stellar clusters ages ranging from 4 Myr to 600 Myr. Standard dust models used to reproduce the Galactic diffuse medium are clearly not able to reproduce the dust emission in the MIR wavelength domain. This analysis evidences the need of adjusting parameters describing the dust size distribution and shows a clear distinct behavior according to the type of environments. In addition, whereas the small grain emission always seems to be negligible at long wavelengths in our Galaxy, the contribution of this small dust component could be more important than expected, in the submm-mm range, in the LMC averaged SED. Properties of the small dust component of the LMC are clearly different from those of our Galaxy. Its abundance, significantly enhanced, could be the result of large grains shattering due to strong shocks or turbulence. In addition, this grain component in the LMC systematically shows smaller grain size in the ionized regions compared to the diffuse medium. Predictions of extinction curves show significantly distinct behaviors depending on the dust models but also from one region to another. Comparison of model predictions with the LMC mean extinction curve shows that no model gives satisfactory agreement using the Mathis radiation field while using a harder radiation field tends to improve the agreement, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Stabilizer simulation can efficiently simulate an important class of quantum circuits consisting exclusively of Clifford gates. However, all existing extensions of this simulation to arbitrary quantum circuits including non-Clifford gates suffer from an exponential runtime. To address this challenge, we present a novel approach for efficient stabilizer simulation on arbitrary quantum circuits, at the cost of lost precision. Our key idea is to compress an exponential sum representation of the quantum state into a single abstract summand covering (at least) all occurring summands. This allows us to introduce an abstract stabilizer simulator that efficiently manipulates abstract summands by over-approximating the effect of circuit operations including Clifford gates, non-Clifford gates, and (internal) measurements. We implemented our abstract simulator in a tool called Abstraqt and experimentally demonstrate that Abstraqt can establish circuit properties intractable for existing techniques., Comment: 22 pages
