1. Why quantum state verification cannot be both efficient and secure: a categorical approach

Abstract

The advantage of quantum protocols lies in the inherent properties of the shared quantum states. These states are sometimes provided by sources that are not trusted, and therefore need to be verified. Finding secure and efficient quantum state verification protocols remains a big challenge, and recent works illustrate trade-offs between efficiency and security for different groups of states in restricted settings. However, whether a universal trade-off exists for all quantum states and all verification strategies remains unknown. In this work, we instantiate the categorical composable cryptography framework to show a fundamental limit for quantum state verification for all cut-and-choose approaches used to verify arbitrary quantum states. Our findings show that the prevailing cut-and-choose techniques cannot lead to quantum state verification protocols that are both efficient and secure.

2. The Influence of Experimental Imperfections on Photonic GHZ State Generation

While the advantages of photonic quantum computing, including direct compatibility with communication, are apparent, several imperfections such as loss and distinguishability presently limit actual implementations. These imperfections are unlikely to be completely eliminated, and it is therefore beneficial to investigate which of these are the most dominant and what is achievable under their presence. In this work, we provide an in-depth investigation of the influence of photon loss, multi-photon terms and photon distinguishability on the generation of photonic 3-partite GHZ states via established fusion protocols. We simulate the generation process for SPDC and solid-state-based single-photon sources using realistic parameters and show that different types of imperfections are dominant with respect to the fidelity and generation success probability. Our results indicate what are the dominant imperfections for the different photon sources and in which parameter regimes we can hope to implement photonic quantum computing in the near future., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

3. Distinguishing Graph States by the Properties of Their Marginals

Graph states are a class of multi-partite entangled quantum states that are ubiquitous in many networking applications; the study of equivalence relations between graph states under local operations aims to provide methods to relate graph states in networked settings. The problem of determining local unitary (LU) equivalence of graph states is in NP, and it remains an open question if efficient general methods are possible. We introduce a family of easy-to-compute LU-invariants based on the marginal structure of the graphs that allow to rule out equivalence of graph states. We show that these invariants can uniquely identify all LU-orbits and entanglement classes of every graph state of 8 qubits or less and discuss how reliable the methods are for more qubit graph states. We also discuss examples of entanglement classes with more nodes, where their marginal structure does not allow us to tell them apart. Additionally, we generalise tools to test local clifford (LC) equivalence of graph states that work by condensing graphs into other graphs of smaller size. We show that statements on the equivalence of the smaller graphs (which are easier to compute) can be used to infer statements on the equivalence of the original, larger graphs., Comment: 12 pages of main text + 5 pages of appendices, 10+2 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a lexicon centered on emerging concepts, focusing on non-technological innovation. It introduces a four-step methodology that combines human expertise, statistical analysis, and machine learning techniques to establish a model that can be generalized across multiple domains. This process includes the creation of a thematic corpus, the development of a Gold Standard Lexicon, annotation and preparation of a training corpus, and finally, the implementation of learning models to identify new terms. The results demonstrate the robustness and relevance of our approach, highlighting its adaptability to various contexts and its contribution to lexical research. 5. Humidification Towards Flashback Prevention in a Classical Micro Gas Turbine: Thermodynamic Performance Assessment

Abstract

Combustion air humidification has proven to be effective to stabilize hydrogen combustion and to avoid flashback apparition in a typical micro Gas Turbine (mGT). However, both the fuel alteration and combustion air dilution will impact the cycle performance. A complete characterization of this thermodynamic impact is essential to ensure that the mGTs become cleaner, and fully flexible to fit with the expectation of future small-scale decentralized power production. Therefore, the objective of this work is twofold: the determination of the necessary dilution for combustion stabilization, depending on the type of fuel, as well as the impact assessment on the cycle performance. In this framework, a hybrid model of the Turbec T100 mGT combustor, combining a 0D Chemical Reactor Network and 1D Laminar flame calculations, is used to first assess the flashback limits. The laminar flame speed is evaluated to predetermine the necessary minimal water dilution of the combustion air to avoid flashback for several CH4/H2 blends. Second, a thermodynamic analysis is performed to assess the impact of the flame stabilization measures on the cycle performance of the mGT using Aspen Plus. The 0D/1D simulation results show that the combustor of the Turbec T100 can operate with fuels containing up to 100% hydrogen. However, the thermodynamic analysis shows that the water dilution leads to a decreased electrical performance. Future work consists in the iterative coupling of both 0D/1D and the Aspen model to correctly predict the flashback limits, considering the altering operating conditions. To conclude, with this work, we provide a framework for future mGT operations with alternative fuels.

6. Assessing the State of Technology Education in Primary Schools: A Systematic Review of the Last 2 Decades

Abstract

This study reports on a systematic review of the current status of technology education in primary schools and the terminology used in the fields of technology and engineering education. Additionally, this review highlights crucial aspects of teaching and learning that must not be overlooked when outlining the current state of technology and engineering education, such as students' and teachers' personal factors, classroom communication, and teacher professional growth. Following PRISMA guidelines, two electronic databases were reviewed, Web of Science and Education Resources Information Center. The literature search identified a total of 1206 papers, 125 from Web of Science and 1081 from ERIC. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 33 papers were selected and evaluated in depth. The results show that research on technology education in primary schools is a growing field of interest but fragmented in focus. Our review is the first to indicate the wide range of technology and engineering education definitions. We also highlight the large heterogeneity of studies focusing on students' and teachers' personal factors and classroom interactions, a finding that may be explained by the unclear concepts and aims of technology and engineering curricula. This study contributes to and supports research and policymaking to better understand the current status, heterogeneities, and challenges in technology and engineering education in primary schools. In addition, we provide first insights to support professional development efforts targeting teachers' technology acceptance and improvement of their technology-related teaching practices.

Abstract

Diffusion Models have revolutionized the field of human motion generation by offering exceptional generation quality and fine-grained controllability through natural language conditioning. Their inherent stochasticity, that is the ability to generate various outputs from a single input, is key to their success. However, this diversity should not be unrestricted, as it may lead to unlikely generations. Instead, it should be confined within the boundaries of text-aligned and realistic generations. To address this issue, we propose MoDiPO (Motion Diffusion DPO), a novel methodology that leverages Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) to align text-to-motion models. We streamline the laborious and expensive process of gathering human preferences needed in DPO by leveraging AI feedback instead. This enables us to experiment with novel DPO strategies, using both online and offline generated motion-preference pairs. To foster future research we contribute with a motion-preference dataset which we dub Pick-a-Move. We demonstrate, both qualitatively and quantitatively, that our proposed method yields significantly more realistic motions. In particular, MoDiPO substantially improves Frechet Inception Distance (FID) while retaining the same RPrecision and Multi-Modality performances.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of lowering fluoroscopic frame rate and increasing collimation on dose area product (DAP) during single-vessel percutaneous coronary interventions. Two patient groups that underwent such procedures were retrospectively reviewed: one treated with a standard practice employing fluoroscopy at 15 frames/s and usual collimation (standard group), and the other with a reduced practice employing fluoroscopy at 7.5 frames/s and increased collimation (reduced group). DAP, patient’s effective dose (ED), fluoroscopy time, and number of cineangiography (cine) frames were compared between groups. Multilinear analysis was performed, with DAP as a primary endpoint, to assess the impact of reduced practice in comparison to that of other variables deemed as key descriptors of radiation, patient, disease, or procedure. Relative to the standard group, the reduced group showed a significant decrease of ~37% in DAP (91.46 ± 45.08 Gy•cm2 vs. 145.23 ± 59.67 Gy•cm2, P < 0.0001) and of ~39% in ED (18.70 ± 9.00 mSv vs. 30.61 ± 12.72 mSv, P < 0.0001). While fluoroscopic time was not statistically different between groups (reduced: 10.3 ± 5.6 min vs. standard: 11.1 ± 5.3 min, P = 0.09), number of cine frames was significantly higher in the reduced (1162 ± 304 vs. 936 ± 363, P < 0.0001) due to interoperator experience variability. Multilinear analysis demonstrated that the adoption of the reduced practice was the most significant contributor to the observed DAP decrease. After adjusting for potential confounders, a reduction of ~39% in DAP was found.

Abstract

The realm of green energy is in constant flux, drawing considerable attention from stakeholders dedicated to minimizing environmental impact, reducing costs, and developing structures that align with stringent standards. This study introduces an innovative approach aimed at improving onshore wind tower foundation systems, emphasizing both engineering and financial feasibility. The approach involves a comprehensive analysis of design load cases, particularly emphasizing resistance against overturn, while ensuring compliance with Eurocode guidelines. The foundation system is conceptualized as a beam slab with voids filled by soil material. High reduction in concrete quantity is achieved by reaching 30%, while the steel reduction reaches 90%. It is worth mentioning that the total cost is reduced by up to 70%. Furthermore, as a future trend, this study aims to integrate the new foundation system with steel 3D printing technology in the manufacturing process of the wind tower’s structural elements. This integration is expected to enhance the precision and customization of the superstructure-foundation system, thereby improving overall performance and efficiency. The optimized design not only significantly reduces construction costs but also streamlines installation, saving time. Simultaneously, this study enhances the structural behavior of the wind tower foundation by focusing on elements crucial to its efficiency.

25. Prelicensure Baccalaureate Nursing Faculty's Experiences of Providing Incivility Awareness Education to Students

Abstract

This study investigated prelicensure baccalaureate nursing faculty's lived experiences of providing incivility awareness education to students. The problem was that previous research regarding incivility awareness education to prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students focused on pilot studies to find effective strategies and students' receptiveness to educational approaches, but it lacked the nurse educators' experiences of delivering the education. The purpose was to explore the lived experiences of nurse educators providing incivility awareness education to prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students. with at least 1 year of teaching experience in prelicensure baccalaureate nursing programs and had taught the topic of incivility awareness. Using the qualitative interpretive phenomenological approach, purposive sampling, and semistructured interviews to gather thick data from the six nurse educators, three major themes emerged. Using thematic analysis and coding, student interactions, teaching approach, and motivating factors were the findings surrounding their experiences of teaching incivility awareness. This analysis was correlated with the literature and theory of faculty empowerment for students to foster civility model. The study, supporting the mission for positive social change, to aid knowledge transfer among nurse educators and inspire incivility awareness education into their educational setting may positively influence their students' knowledge of recognition of incivility. 26. Technology Education in Primary Schools: Addressing Teachers' Perceptions, Perceived Barriers, and Needs

Abstract

In primary schools, the benefits of incorporating technology in curricula have been addressed by several studies; however, technology integration as experienced by teachers is often overlooked. Teachers' lack of confidence teaching STEM and technology subjects, their lack of appropriate preparation along with unclear curricula frameworks in technology education, and the ambiguity of the definition of technology education have scarcely been discussed in the literature. This study explored teachers' experiences with the current integration of technology and identified challenges to the integration of technology and areas where support is needed. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data and were analyzed using content analysis. Content knowledge, proper training, and professional development programs on the integration of technology along with the need for clear and unanimous curricula standards have been perceived as important factors in the integration of technology education. Participants also acknowledged the need for the establishment of teaching communities wherein they can learn from one another. Our study discusses implications for research and practice and provides a knowledge base for the establishment of well-structured professional development courses based on teacher needs.

Abstract

In the present study, the physicochemical characteristics of 108 yoghurts purchased from the Greek market have been assessed. Generally, the range of the mean pH values of samples was 3.58–4.64, of fat 0–10.8%, of protein 3.29–10.05%, of total solids 10.75–25.18%, and of ash 0.5–1.17%. Samples were categorized as strained and non-strained (traditional with a crust or plain without a crust). The milk origin was classified as being from sheep, goats, cows, mixture of sheep–goat–cow milk, or cow–donkey milk combination. A significant effect of species origin was determined for yoghurt physicochemical attributes, whereas geographical origin, mainland or island, affected yoghurt acidity only. Discriminant analysis revealed MDA, pH, acidity, syneresis, fat, and protein content and color lightness and redness as the traits responsible for the discrimination of yoghurts into milk-type classes, whereas fat, protein, and ash content, pH, and syneresis attributes were responsible for the discrimination into fat content classes. Yoghurt samples were sufficiently clustered according to their fat content, whereas protein content and species origin discriminated yoghurts to a lesser extent. This first in-depth descriptive research on a wide range of samples of the renowned Greek yoghurt showed that several physicochemical characteristics can be used for sample discrimination.

Caries is very common in the elderly as there are several aggravating factors, such as a decrease of the ability to self-care and, by extension, insufficient oral hygiene, a carious diet, limited exposure to fluoride, xerostomia, gingival recession, and limited access to dental care. This study aimed to review the dietary risk factors for root caries prevalence in older adults, from socially active people to frail patients. A comprehensive search strategy was used to select studies from PubMed and Scopus databases. Two evaluators performed data extraction, screening, and quality assessment independently. Only studies written in English were included. Root caries is prevalent in the elderly due to gingival recession and root exposure to the oral environment. Dietary risk factors significantly affect root caries prevalence in older adults, including a high intake of sugars and an alteration of their composition preference in this age group. Caries risk appears more significant in frail, institutionalized patients fed softer food or supplements.

Abstract

Background: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often lead sedentary lives, contributing to cardiovascular disease and muscular atrophy, requiring innovative therapeutic exercise approaches. Whole-body vibration (WBV) exercise training offers a unique option for those with limited motor control. This six-week pilot study aimed to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of WBV training in individuals with ASD. Methods: Six participants (age: 22.17 ± 2.14 years) underwent twice-weekly WBV sessions (10–24 min, 5–25 Hz). Cardiovascular biomarkers, including body composition, leg strength, blood pressure, waist/hip ratio, and body mass index (BMI), were measured. Qualitative outcomes on exercise tolerance, protocol completion, and perceived exertion were collected at each session. Data analyses, including measures of central tendencies and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, evaluated the intervention’s effectiveness. Results: WBV training was safe and well-tolerated in adults with ASD. Despite no statistically significant improvements in cardiovascular and muscular strength indices, participants showed good adherence and tolerance to the protocol. Conclusion: Although WBV training had no significant impact on measured outcomes, it emerged as a feasible and well-tolerated exercise for individuals with ASD. It shows promise for addressing cardiovascular risk factors and reducing sedentary behaviors, suggesting the need for longer interventions to fully uncover its therapeutic potential.

The present study concerns the plain of Arta, located in the northwestern part of Greece, in one of the most surplus water areas of the country, where the highest annual precipitation occurs. However, despite the region's water wealth, the plain is experiencing water shortages, posing challenges to agricultural productivity. This study delves into the examination of this paradox with the objective of offering insights into fundamental inquiries such as "What are the annual irrigation requirements of the plain and how are they distributed throughout the year?" “Is the water supplied by the collective irrigation network adequate to meet these requirements?" and "What proportion of irrigation needs are met by groundwater?". In the absence of data and measurements, a methodology was therefore developed for the approximation of the water balance, using software tools and drawing on the experience and knowledge of farmers, thus creating the basis for optimizing agricultural production and addressing management issues. To calculate the water requirements, the CROPWAT 8.0 software was used, utilizing the climatic data from six meteorological stations in the region, while a qualitative survey was conducted to estimate the rate of groundwater consumption, targeting a group of stakeholders and a group of farmers. The crops' annual water requirements were calculated to be 49.1 hm3, with drilled water meeting 41.1% of these needs. The public irrigation system's water supply is sufficient to meet the crops' annual water requirements. Water shortages and over-extraction of groundwater provide substantial management difficulties that need to be tackled. These challenges present significant chances for enhancement and growth and are essential for the region’s economic and social sustainability.

Abstract

IntroductionData overlapping of different biological conditions prevents personalized medical decision-making. For example, when the neutrophil percentages of surviving septic patients overlap with those of non-survivors, no individualized assessment is possible. To ameliorate this problem, an immunological method was explored in the context of sepsis.MethodsBlood leukocyte counts and relative percentages as well as the serum concentration of several proteins were investigated with 4072 longitudinal samples collected from 331 hospitalized patients classified as septic (n=286), non-septic (n=43), or not assigned (n=2). Two methodological approaches were evaluated: (i) a reductionist alternative, which analyzed variables in isolation; and (ii) a non-reductionist version, which examined interactions among six (leukocyte-, bacterial-, temporal-, personalized-, population-, and outcome-related) dimensions.ResultsThe reductionist approach did not distinguish outcomes: the leukocyte and serum protein data of survivors and non-survivors overlapped. In contrast, the non-reductionist alternative differentiated several data groups, of which at least one was only composed of survivors (a finding observable since hospitalization day 1). Hence, the non-reductionist approach promoted personalized medical practices: every patient classified within a subset associated with 100% survival subset was likely to survive. The non-reductionist method also revealed five inflammatory or disease-related stages (provisionally named ‘early inflammation, early immunocompetence, intermediary immuno-suppression, late immuno-suppression, or other’). Mortality data validated these labels: both ‘suppression’ subsets revealed 100% mortality, the ‘immunocompetence’ group exhibited 100% survival, while the remaining sets reported two-digit mortality percentages. While the ‘intermediary’ suppression expressed an impaired monocyte-related function, the ‘late’ suppression displayed renal-related dysfunctions, as indicated by high concentrations of urea and creatinine.DiscussionThe data-driven differentiation of five data groups may foster early and non-overlapping biomedical decision-making, both upon admission and throughout their hospitalization. This approach could evaluate therapies, at personalized level, earlier. To ascertain repeatability and investigate the dynamics of the ‘other’ group, additional studies are recommended.

Objective To estimate real-life European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR)/European Renal Association (ERA)-European Dialysis and Transplantation Association (EDTA) response rates and predictors for no response in patients with lupus nephritis (LN) managed with conventional immunosuppressive therapies.Methods Ambidirectional cohort study of patients with new-onset LN (period 2014–to date). 39. Frailty is independently associated with subclinical cardiovascular disease in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus

Objectives Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of mortality in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Frailty has been associated with an increased cardiovascular disease risk (CVR) in the general population. We aimed to examine the association between frailty and subclinical cardiovascular disease in patients with SLE.Methods In this cross-sectional study, we included all patients with SLE who underwent carotid/femoral artery ultrasound in our unit between 2016 and 2018. Clinical and laboratory data were collected at the time of ultrasound testing. Frailty was measured using the Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics-Frailty Index (SLICC-FI). CVR (low, moderate, high, very high) was evaluated by the Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE) model. Determinants of atherosclerotic plaque presence were assessed by logistic regression analyses, adjusting for potential confounders.Results 202 patients were included in the study. Atherosclerotic plaques (20.8% carotid, 17.3% femoral) were observed in 52/202 (25.7%) patients (89.1% women, mean (±SD) age 46.7±12.6). Median (IQR) SLICC-FI was 0.08 (0.04–0.10). 39 (19.3%) patients were classified as robust, 91 (45%) as relatively less fit, 59 (29.2%) as least fit and 13 (6.4%) as frail. In univariate analysis, plaque presence was significantly associated with age, disease duration, smoking, hypertension, systolic blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, SCORE, CVR class and SLICC-FI. CVR class (OR 5.16, p=0.000) and SLICC-FI (OR 1.34, p=0.03 per 0.05 point increase) remained significant in multivariate analysis after adjustment for traditional and disease-related CVR factors.Conclusions SLICC-FI is independently associated with plaque presence. Further studies are warranted to determine whether frailty-specific interventions can reduce CVR in patients with SLE.

Abstract

To reduce climate impact, switching to carbon-free electrofuels is an interesting option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation. The emission of other pollutants than CO2, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), however, remains a concern. This research focuses on investigating the impact of transient phases, such as start-up and load change, on the NOx emissions expected from the rich combustion of mixtures of hydrogen and ammonia in gas turbines. Stochastic processes account for the inherent variability and uncertainty on the transient trajectories. The trajectories are simulated using a one-dimensional premixed flame model built in Cantera to compute the levels of pollutant formations, among others. The results indicate significant variations in the equivalence ratio, leading to high NOx emission peaks. The study concludes that the impact of the uncertainties related to the transient trajectories on the NOx emissions is low compared to the overall variations of the equivalence ratio, although they can accentuate observed peaks.

Abstract

Quantum information processing architectures typically only allow for nearest-neighbour entanglement creation. In many cases, this prevents the direct generation of GHZ states, which are commonly used for many communication and computation tasks. Here, we show how to obtain GHZ states between nodes in a network that are connected in a straight line, naturally allowing them to initially share linear cluster states. We prove a strict upper bound of $\lfloor (n+3)/2 \rfloor$ on the size of the set of nodes sharing a GHZ state that can be obtained from a linear cluster state of $n$ qubits, using local Clifford unitaries, local Pauli measurements, and classical communication. Furthermore, we completely characterize all selections of nodes below this threshold that can share a GHZ state obtained within this setting.
