Objective: 2 Childhood-onset type 1 diabetes is associated with neurocognitive deficits, but there is limited evidence to date regarding associated neuroanatomical brain changes and their relationship to illness variables such as age at disease onset. This report examines age-related changes in volume and T2 relaxation time (a fundamental parameter of magnetic resonance imaging that reflects tissue health) across the whole brain.Research Design and Methods: Type 1 diabetes, N = 79 (mean age 20.32 ± 4.24 years), and healthy control participants, N = 50 (mean age 20.53 ± 3.60 years). There were no substantial group differences on socioeconomic status, sex ratio, or intelligence quotient.Results: Regression analyses revealed a negative correlation between age and brain changes, with decreasing gray matter volume and T2 relaxation time with age in multiple brain regions in the type 1 diabetes group. In comparison, the age-related decline in the control group was small. Examination of the interaction of group and age confirmed a group difference (type 1 diabetes vs. control) in the relationship between age and brain volume/T2 relaxation time.Conclusions: We demonstrated an interaction between age and group in predicting brain volumes and T2 relaxation time such that there was a decline in these outcomes in type 1 diabetic participants that was much less evident in control subjects. Findings suggest the neurodevelopmental pathways of youth with type 1 diabetes have diverged from those of their healthy peers by late adolescence and early adulthood but the explanation for this phenomenon remains to be clarified. Aims: Improved behaviour, mood, cognition and HbA1c have been reported with short-term use of continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D). We sought to re-examine these findings in a randomised controlled trial (RCT), with longitudinal follow-up., Methods: RCT of youth aged 7-15 years with T1D, at two tertiary paediatric centres. Participants were randomised to commence CSII or continue multiple daily injections (MDI). Behaviour, mood, cognition and HbA1c were assessed. Primary outcome was difference in parent-reported behaviour (BASC-2) at 4 months. After the 4-month RCT, MDI participants commenced CSII; outcomes were reassessed at +2 years., Results: Participating youth (n=101) were randomised to CSII (n=56) or MDI (n=45). Significant differences favouring CSII were found at 4 months in parent-reported behaviour problems (Cohen's d 0.41 (95% CI 0.004 to 0.795); p=0.048) and HbA1c (mean (95% CI) difference: 7 (2.3 to 11.7) mmol/mol (0.6% (0.2 to 1.0%); p=0.001)). Improvements from baseline were documented in mood and cognitive outcomes in both study groups over the 4-month RCT; however, no between-group differences were evident at 4 months. Sixteen of 76 (21%) participants completing assessments at +2 years had discontinued CSII. In n=60 still using CSII, measurements of behaviour, mood and HbA1c were comparable to baseline., Conclusions: Parent-reported behaviour problems and HbA1c, but not mood or neurocognitive outcomes, were clinically significantly lower with CSII, relative to MDI, after 4 months. Observational follow-up indicated no impact of treatment modality at +2 years, relative to baseline levels. This study investigated long-term executive functioning following early mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), differentiating between complicated (n=34) and uncomplicated injuries (n=18). Children post mild TBI were compared to 33 controls at least 7-years post-injury. The complicated mild TBI group performed significantly worse on divided attention compared to both groups, with younger age at injury and neurological symptoms predictors of outcome. No significant group differences existed on speed of information processing, selective attention, working memory, or goal setting. These findings indicate that specific aspects of executive function are compromised by early complicated mild TBI and argue for a stratified definition of mild TBI.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is the most common pregnancy dermatosis. This evidence-based review article provides an evaluation of AD in gestation. Our literature search revealed 4 epidemiologic studies on AD in pregnancy, and a total of 55 articles that provide the basis for this review. The limitations of epidemiologic studies included herein are critically reviewed. The management of AD in gestation is reviewed with an emphasis on drug safety. Further studies are required to determine whether it is the intrinsic ("nonallergic" or "atopiform dermatitis") and/or extrinsic (IgE-associated) AD that is affected by pregnancy, and to establish the postpartum prognosis of "new atopic dermatitis" (AD presenting for the first time in pregnancy). A revision of the diagnostic criteria will allow a more accurate confirmation of the prevalence of AD, and especially "new atopic dermatitis," in pregnancy as well as differentiation of AD from specific dermatoses of pregnancy, such as prurigo and pruritic folliculitis. Addressing the above issues and unraveling the etiopathogenesis of AD in pregnancy will help clarify a suggested overlap with the above specific dermatoses., (Copyright © 2011 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)

Serum copper and zinc concentrations of 506 (414 males and 92 females) apparently healthy Greek blood donors aged 18-60 years old were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean copper and zinc concentrations were 115.46+/-23.56 microg/dl and 77.11+/-17.67 microg/dl, respectively. The mean value for copper and zinc in females was higher than in males, although the difference for zinc was smaller than the one observed for copper. When the subjects were divided into various age groups there appeared to be some increase in copper concentration as a function of age, whereas zinc concentration did not change. There were no significant variations in serum copper and zinc concentrations due to place of residence, occupation and socioeconomic status. This study is the first one evaluating the serum status of copper and zinc in healthy Greeks and it has shown that they are at the highest concentration range for copper and the lowest for zinc compared to literature data on copper and zinc levels for various countries.

The delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta9-THC) content was identified and determined quantitatively using a Gas Chromatography Detector (Gas Chromatography-Electron Ion Detector) instrument in samples of illicit herbal cannabis. Law enforcement authorities sent the samples to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, University of Athens, for toxicological analysis. The concentrations of delta9-THC in these samples ranged from 0.08% to 4.41%. Such concentrations suggest that Greece might be at high risk, as an area for the illicit cultivation of "pedigree" cannabis plants. The forensic aspects of cannabis classification are discussed.
