Empirical evidence of the effective degradation at environmentally relevant conditions of organophosphate esters (OPEs) flame retardants and plasticizers in coastal sediments from an impacted area in the NW Mediterranean Sea is provided. Half-lives varied from 23.3 to 77.0 (abiotic conditions) and from 16.8 to 46.8 days (biotic conditions), depending on the compound, highlighting the relevant role of microbial assemblages enhancing OPE degradation. After an immediate significant reduction of the bacterial abundance due to OPE addition to the sediment at the very beginning of the experiment, the observed biodegradation was associated to a general stimulation of the growth of the bacterial community during a first period, but without a marked change of the structure of the community. However, OPE contamination induced a decrease on the diversity of the bacterial community in the coastal sediment, noticeable after 14 days of incubation. It is likely that on one side the contamination had favoured the growth of some bacterial groups maybe involved in the biodegradation of these compounds but, on the other side, had also impacted some sensitive bacteria. The estimated half-lives fill a data gap concerning OPE degradation rates in marine sediments and will be valuable data for the refinement of OPE chemical risk assessment in marine environments, particularly on impacted sites.

- Abstract
An intercomparison exercise on "microplastics in sediment" was carried out by five laboratories using samples collected in the Bay of Marseille in September 2021. The results from different extraction and identification methods varied depending on the type and size classes of MPs, and was better than 80 % for the size class >300 μm and for the fragments. The variability in recovery rates can be attributed to the choice of reagents and extraction protocols. Recovery rates per laboratory were between 47 % and 113 % and the use of ZnCl
2 and NaI increased recovery rates by an average of 70 %. The lowest recovery rates (47 and 53 %) were attributed to the reference methods (FTIR and LDIR), conversely the highest (80 and 87 %) were attributed to identification by Nile Red. 7. Temporal trends of plastic additive contents in sediment cores of three French rivers (Loire, Meuse and Moselle) over the last decades.

Sediment cores from three major French watersheds (Loire, Meuse and Moselle) have been dated by
137 Cs and210 Pbxs from 1910 (Loire), 1947 (Meuse) and 1930 (Moselle) until the present in order to reconstruct trajectories of plastic additive contaminants including nine phthalate esters (PAEs) and seven organophosphate esters (OPEs), measured by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS-MS). Historical levels of ∑PAEs were higher than those of ∑OPEs in the Loire and the Moselle sediments, while ∑PAEs and ∑OPEs contents were of the same order of magnitude in the Meuse sediments. Although increases in concentrations do not evolve linearly, our results clearly indicate an increase in OPEs and PAEs concentrations from the 1950-1970 period onwards, compared with the first half of the 20th century. Our results show that, ∑OPE contents increase gradually over time in the Loire and Meuse rivers but evolve more randomly in the Moselle River. Trajectories of ∑PAEs depend on the river and no generality can be established, suggesting sedimentary reworking and/or local contamination. Data from this study allowed comparisons of contents of ∑OPEs and ∑PAEs between rivers, with ∑OPE concentrations in the Moselle River > Meuse River > Loire River, and concentrations of ∑PAEs in the Loire River > Moselle River > Meuse River. Among all PAEs, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was the most abundant in all sediment samples, followed by diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP). Tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant OPE in sediments of the three rivers. In addition, strong positive Pearson correlations were observed between organic matter (OM) parameters and OPE concentrations, and to a lesser extent, between OM parameters and PAE concentrations. - Abstract
137 Cs is a long-lived man-made radionuclide introduced in the environment worldwide at the early beginning of the nuclear Era during atmospheric nuclear testing's followed by the civil use of nuclear energy. Atmospheric fallout deposition of this major artificial radionuclide was reconstructed at the scale of French large river basins since 1945, and trajectories in French nuclearized rivers were established using sediment coring. Our results show that137 Cs contents in sediments of the studied rivers display a large spatial and temporal variability in response to the various anthropogenic pressures exerted on their catchment. The Loire, Rhone, and Rhine rivers were the most affected by atmospheric fallout from the global deposition from nuclear tests. Rhine and Rhone also received significant fallout from the Chernobyl accident in 1986 and recorded significant137 Cs concentrations in their sediments over the 1970-1985 period due to the regulatory releases from the nuclear industries. The Meuse River was notably impacted in the early 1970s by industrial releases. In contrast, the Seine River display the lowest137 Cs concentrations regardless of the period. All the rivers responded similarly over time to atmospheric fallout on their catchment, underlying a rather homogeneous resilience capacity of these river systems to this source of contamination., (© 2024. - Abstract
Although global plastic distribution is at the heart of 21st century environmental concerns, little information is available concerning how organic plastic additives contaminate freshwater sediments, which are often subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. Here, sediment core samples were collected in the Rhone and the Rhine watersheds (France), dated using
137 Cs and210 Pbxs methods and analysed for nine phthalates (PAEs) and seven organophosphate esters (OPEs). The distribution of these organic contaminants was used to establish a chronological archive of plastic additive pollution from 1860 (Rhine) and 1930 (Rhone) until today. Sediment grain size and parameters related to organic matter (OM) were also measured as potential factors that may affect the temporal distribution of OPEs and PAEs in sediments. Our results show that OPE and PAE levels increased continuously in Rhone and Rhine sediments since the first records. In both rivers, ∑PAEs levels (from 9.1 ± 1.7 to 487.3 ± 27.0 ng g-1 dry weight (dw) ± standard deviation and from 4.6 ± 1.3 to 65.2 ± 11.2 ng g-1 dw, for the Rhine and the Rhone rivers, respectively) were higher than ∑OPEs levels (from 0.1 ± 0.1 to 79.1 ± 13.7 ng g-1 dw and from 0.6 ± 0.1 to 17.8 ± 2.3 ng g-1 dw, for Rhine and Rhone rivers, respectively). In both rivers, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was the most abundant PAE, followed by diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), while tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP) was the most abundant OPE. No relationship was found between granulometry and additives concentrations, while organic matter helps explain the vertical distribution of PAEs and OPEs in the sediment cores. - Abstract
Background: Although carotid web (CaW) is increasingly diagnosed as a cause of cryptogenic stroke, data are still limited to monocentric small sample cohort. To broaden knowledge on symptomatic CaW, CAROWEB registry has been recently implemented., Aims: In a large cohort of symptomatic CaW patients, we described epidemiologic characteristics, admission clinical and imaging features, and the current management including the secondary preventive strategy choice made in comprehensive French Stroke Units., Methods: CAROWEB is an ongoing French observational multicenter registry enrolling consecutive CaW patients diagnosed after an ipsilateral ischemic stroke (IS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA). Submitted cases were validated by two experienced neurologist and neuroradiologist. Clinical, imaging, and management features were collected for this study., Results: Between June 2019 and December 2021, 244 cases were submitted by 14 centers, 42 rejected, and 202 included (IS, 91.6%; TIA, 7.9%; retinal infarction, 0.5%; mean age, 50.8 ± 12.2 years; female, 62.9%; Caucasian, 47.5%; Afro-Caribbean, 20.3%). IS patients showed median (interquartile range (IQR)) admission National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score, 8 (2-15); intracranial artery occlusion, 71.8%; ipsilateral chronic cerebral infarction (CCI), 16.3%; and reperfusion treatment, 57.3%. CaW was not identified during the mechanical thrombectomy procedure in 30 of 85 (35.3%) patients. Secondary prevention was invasive in 55.6% (stenting, n = 80; surgery, n = 30). In multivariable analysis, the invasive therapeutic option was associated with ipsilateral CCI (odds ratio (OR): 4.24 (1.27-14.2), p = 0.019) and inversely associated with risk factors (OR: 0.47 (0.24-0.91), p = 0.025) and admission NIHSS score (OR: 0.93 (0.89-0.97), p = 0.001)., Conclusion: CaW must be considered in all ethnic groups including Caucasians. Secondary prevention is heterogeneous in large French Stroke Centers. The absence of risk factors, milder severity strokes, and ipsilateral CCI were predictive variables of secondary invasive treatment. 11. What happens to biomass burning-emitted particles in the ocean? A laboratory experimental approach based on their tracers.

- Abstract
Wildfires, controlled burns, and biofuel combustion (biomass burning or BB) are major contributors to particulate matter in the atmosphere and thus have an impact on climate, human health, and ecosystems. Once emitted, the particulate matter derived from BB can be taken up by the oceans. However, the fate and impact of BB in the marine biological carbon pump, and carbon cycle are largely unknown. This work presents the first attempt to investigate the bioavailability of two BB tracers, levoglucosan and galactosan, in seawater inoculated with marine prokaryotes. Levoglucosan and galactosan were incubated with a marine bacterial inoculum and monitored for six weeks under controlled laboratory conditions. Along with the anhydrosugar concentrations, multiple chemical and biological parameters were monitored over time. The results indicate that levoglucosan and galactosan can be assimilated by marine prokaryotes as their concentrations decreased by 97 ± 4 % and 36 ± 21 % (n = 3) of their initial values. However, this decrease occurred only after a 9 and 15 days from the beginning of the experiment, respectively. The decrease in the levoglucosan and galactosan concentrations was accompanied by an increase in both heterotrophic prokaryotic production, and abundance. These results demonstrate that these anhydrosugars have the potential to be assimilated by heterotrophic prokaryotes and thus contribute to the microbial food web functioning. Under our experimental conditions, levoglucosan exhibited a bacterial growth efficiency of 17 ± 5 % (n = 3), suggesting that most of the levoglucosan is mineralized into CO
2 . Prokaryotic diversity analyses revealed the predominance of a few bacterial genera from the Roseobacter clade that were selected after the addition of the anhydrosugars. Background & Purpose: Carotid Web (CaW) is a growingly recognized cause of ischemic stroke, associated with a high recurrence risk. Several therapeutic strategies have been proposed as a tertiary prevention including carotid stenting, endarterectomy and antithrombotic medications. Among these, carotid stenting with dual-layer stent may be promising to adequately cover the focal arterial dysplasia. Our aim was to investigate the safety and efficacy of the Casper stent in the treatment of symptomatic CaW., Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of consecutive patients presenting with a symptomatic CaW and included in the ongoing prospective observational multicenter CAROWEB registry. The study period was January 2015 to December 2021. Inclusion criteria were CaW treated with dual-layer Casper stent. Patients treated with other types of carotid stent, endarterectomy or antithrombotic medication were excluded. Clinical and radiological initial data and outcomes were recorded., Results: twenty-seven patients (with 28 caw) were included. median age was 52 (iqr: 46-68). median delay between index cerebrovascular event and cervical stenting was 9 days (IQR: 6-101). In all cases, the cervical carotid stenting was successfully performed. No major perioperative complication was recorded. No recurrent stroke or transient ischemic attack was observed during a median follow-up time of 272 days (IQR: 114-635). Long-term imaging follow-up was available in 25/28 (89.3%) stented CaW with a median imaging follow-up of 183 days (IQR: 107-676; range: 90-1542). No in-stent occlusion or stenosis was detected., Conclusion: In this study, carotid stenting with dual-layer Casper stent in the treatment of symptomatic CaW was effective regarding stroke recurrence prevention and safe, without procedural nor delayed detected adverse event. 14. Identification and Quantification of Microplastics in the Marine Environment Using the Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) Technique.

Here, we evaluate for the first time the performances of the newly developed laser direct infrared (LDIR) technique and propose an optimization of the initial protocol for marine microplastics (MPs) analysis. Our results show that an 8 μm porosity polycarbonate filter placed on a Kevley slide enables preconcentration and efficient quantification of MPs, as well as polymer and size determination of reference plastic pellets of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), with recoveries ranging from 80-100% and negligible blank values for particle sizes ranging from 200 to 500 μm. A spiked experiment using seawater, sediment, mussels, and fish stomach samples showed that the method responded linearly with significant slopes ( R
2 ranging from 0.93-1.0; p < 0.001, p < 0.01). Overall, 11 polymer types were identified with limited handling and an analysis time of ca. 3 h for most samples and 6 h for complex samples. Application of this technique to Mediterranean marine samples (seawater, sediment, fish stomachs and mussels) indicated MP concentrations and size distribution consistent with the literature. A high predominance of PVC (sediment, fish stomachs) and PE and PP (seawater, mussels) was observed in the analyzed samples.- Published

- Abstract
Plastic garbage patches at the ocean surface are symptomatic of a wider pollution affecting the whole marine environment. Sinking of plastic debris increasingly appears to be an important process in the global fate of plastic in the ocean. However, there is insufficient knowledge about the processes affecting plastic distributions and degradation and how this influences the release of additives under varying environmental conditions, especially in deep-sea environments. Here we show that in abiotic conditions increasing hydrostatic pressure inhibits the leaching of the heaviest organic additives such as tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate and diisononyl phthalate from polyethylene and polyvinylchloride materials, whereas deep-sea and surface marine prokaryotes promote the release of all targeted additives (phthalates, bisphenols, organophosphate esters). This study provides empirical evidences for more efficient additive release at the ocean surface than in deep seawater, where the major plastic burden is supposed to transit through before reaching the sediment compartment., (© 2021. 16. Environmental occurrence of phthalate and organophosphate esters in sediments across the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean Sea).

Seven phthalate (PAEs) and nine organophosphate esters (OPEs) were measured in surface sediments across the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean Sea) at twelve stations characterized by different anthropogenic signatures. ∑PAEs and ∑OPEs concentrations ranged from 2 to 766 ng/g DW (av. 196 ng/g DW) and from 4 to 227 ng/g DW (av. 54 ng/g DW), respectively. Our analysis of the potential sources of these organic plastic additives in sediments of the Gulf of Lion suggests that the dominant factors affecting their occurrence and environmental distribution are port-based industrial activities and urban pressures. Indeed, the highest ∑PAEs and ∑OPEs concentrations were found close to the ports of Toulon and Marseille (Estaque) and at the sites impacted by the Marseille metropolitan area (i.e. at the outlets of the waste water treatment plant at Cortiou and at the mouth of the Huveaune River). The lowest levels were generally found in protected areas (e.g. Port-Cros) and at sites relatively far from the coast. DEHP was seen to be the most abundant PAE while TDCP, TEHP and TiBP were the most abundant OPEs in the area. Our results also expose the contribution of additives entering the Gulf of Lion via sedimentary material from the Rhône River, with positive correlations between the total organic carbon (TOC) content in the sediment and the ∑PAEs and ∑OPEs concentrations. 17. Reduced fitness of Atlantic salmon released in the wild after one generation of captive breeding.

- Abstract
Salmonids rank among the most socioeconomically valuable fishes and the most targeted species by stocking with hatchery-reared individuals. Here, we used molecular parentage analysis to assess the reproductive success of wild- and hatchery-born Atlantic salmon over three consecutive years in a small river in Québec. Yearly restocking in this river follows a single generation of captive breeding. Among the adults returning to the river to spawn, between 11% and 41% each year were born in hatchery. Their relative reproductive success (RRS) was nearly half that of wild-born fish (0.55). RRS varied with life stage, being 0.71 for fish released at the fry stage and 0.42 for fish released as smolt. The lower reproductive success of salmon released as smolt was partly mediated by the modification of the proportion of single-sea-winter/multi-sea-winter fish. Overall, our results suggest that modifications in survival and growth rates alter the life-history strategies of these fish at the cost of their reproductive success. Our results underline the potential fitness decrease, warn on long-term evolutionary consequences for the population of repeated stocking and support the adoption of more natural rearing conditions for captive juveniles and their release at a younger stage, such as unfed fry.
