First, the extensive volumes of process data generated in a production process can be pre-assessed by the KBS according to set rules. Second, the KBS can make a selection between various MSPC model alternatives. Third, the KBS may support the plant operators when evaluating the MSPC output results. This is shown in this preliminary study where a KBS was applied to an existing MSPC application on a paperboard machine. It is suggested that these experiences may also successfully be applied with other continuous processes in the manufacturing industry. Delegates at a seminar on corrugated packaging held by the Institute of Packaging at Melton Mowbray, England, have been told that the product is set to benefit from increasing fragmentation in consumer markets, including food retailing. The sector has expanded into new markets, including bag-in-box and micro flute, plus development of new printing techniques and barrier properties. Market volume for corrugated plastics continues to grow, despite the advent of new technologies.

The paper industry in south-east Asia is locally based and fragmented and is set for a period of consolidation similar to that in Europe when the European Union was being formed. Paper and board consumption in the 23 nations (excluding China) under review totalled 57 million t in 1996. Per capita paper usage is less than in the developed world but is increasing rapidly at some 10%/y, although growth to 2001 is forecast to stand at 6%/y. There is a severe shortage of paper and board production capacity in the region, which is a major net importer. However, this is set to change, with Malaysia and Indonesia planning large-scale production.

The value of the European label market is estimated at some 3.5 billion pounds sterling and volume is thought to be growing at between 4% and 6% per year. There has been a growing trend towards pressure-sensitive labels, which are worth 1.75 billion pounds sterling a year, while glue-applied labels have lost their dominant position. Pressure-sensitive labels dominate markets including pharmaceuticals, supermarkets, food and the lower end of the industrial market. The European market for labels is analysed in greater detail.

The United Kingdom retail market for writing instruments and personal stationery grew 8% to 401 million pounds sterling during 1990-1994, with growth of 4% anticipated in 1995 although sales will remain unchanged in real terms. Personal stationery accounts for 30% of the market by value, while writing instruments account for the remainder. The market for writing instruments reached 281 million pounds sterling in 1994, with Gillette the brand leader. The market is expected to maintain growth during 1995-1999. The market is analysed.

The Western European and North American paperboard industries are characterized by different production methods and different quality requirements. An overview of the grades manufactured in each region is presented. The leading paperboard grades produced in Western Europe include white-lined chipboard, folding boxboard and liquid packaging. The European corrugated board industry has weathered the recession, with shipments in 1993 estimated to be up around 0.7% from 1992. Traditionally, growth in demand for corrugated packaging has normally outperformed that of GDP but new factors, such as environmental legislation and the changing pattern of warehousing and distribution, mean that future volume growth is more unpredictable, although it should keep pace with GDP. In 1992, corrugated board accounted for a 20% value share of all packaging materials used in Western Europe. Corrugated board shipments in Western Europe during 1992 reached 14.34 million t.
