Abstract

The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". In the past, the U.S. Muon Accelerator Programme (MAP) [5] has been instrumental in studies of concepts and technologies for a muon collider., Comment: This document summarises the International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) progress and status of the Muon Collider R&D programme

Abstract

Radio frequency superconductivity is a cornerstone technology for many future HEP particle accelerators and experiments from colliders to proton drivers for neutrino facilities to searches for dark matter. While the performance of superconducting RF (SRF) cavities has improved significantly over the last decades, and the SRF technology has enabled new applications, the proposed HEP facilities and experiments pose new challenges. To address these challenges, the field continues to generate new ideas and there seems to be a vast room for improvements. In this paper we discuss the key research directions that are aligned with and address the future HEP needs., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract

Disorders of sex development (DSD) are a heterogeneous group of pathologies that result in an alteration in sex determination or differentiation. DSD are estimated to affect 1: 4,500 newborns and according to the 2006 Chicago Consensus classification, DSD can be divided into three categories: those with a 46 XX karyotype, those with a 46 XY karyotype and those relating to sex chromosomes. It is crucial to correctly identify the pathology already in the first days of life to direct the patient and his family to the best path of care. For this reason, the role of the pediatrician is fundamental in the correct identification of the clinical picture and in supporting the family during the long process that involves the management of these patients. To make a diagnosis, it is necessary to follow a path led by a multidisciplinary team that includes several steps such as the execution of the genetic analysis, the evaluation with diagnostic imaging methods and laboratory evaluations. The therapeutic management, on the other hand, is still very complex even if in recent years we have moved from an attitude of early gender reassignment to an approach of watchful waiting to let the patient choose when she/he is mature enough to do so, which gender she/he feels to belong. It should not be forgotten that throughout this process the pediatrician must be both supportive and clinically active in the management of the child and his family.

Abstract

Oral mucosa is constantly under the influence of various internal and external stimuli, therefore it is interested by a range of developmental disorders, irritation, inflammation, and neoplastic conditions. Traumatic fibroma is one of these lesions. The aim of this work is to obtain an ultrasound characterization of a lip fibroma with a high frequency probe (8-18 MHz) as feasibility and experimental model of this non-invasive technique in the oral mucosa compared with its histo-pathological section. Ultrasound characterization of a fibroma in a 50-year-old patient in the right retro commissural area of mucosa was performed. The ultrasound images were compared with its histological image. Fibroma is a traumatic lesion clinically recognizable and with a complex and well-defined histopathology structure. Although further investigations are necessary to determine the potential of ultrasonographic images as an aid in the diagnosis of oral lesions, this case report might be a model for ultrasound imaging compared with its histological section. Abstract

YouTube™ is increasingly being used by patients to obtain health-related information. No studies have evaluated the content of YouTube™ videos on children oral thrush. The aim of this work is to examine the quality of information offered by this platform about oral thrush in children. Searching term “oral thrush in children” (OTC) displayed a total of 2.790 results. Of the top 60 videos analyzed, 27 were excluded. The main source of upload was from generalist information YouTube® channels (GC) followed by healthcare professionals (HP), individual users (IU), and healthcare information channels (HC); usefulness of videos is successfully correlated with the number of visualization, number of likes and viewing rate and was interdependent with the number of visualizations, number of likes and VR. However, videos on the oral thrush do not have satisfactory quality information. HP themselves, along with HC, do not seem to provide more appropriate information on COT, than GC or IU. Abstract

The Search for Hidden Particles (SHiP) Collaboration has shown that the CERN SPS accelerator with its 400 GeV/c proton beam offers a unique opportunity to explore the Hidden Sector [1-3]. The proposed experiment is an intensity frontier experiment which is capable of searching for hidden particles through both visible decays and through scattering signatures from recoil of electrons or nuclei. The high-intensity experimental facility developed by the SHiP Collaboration is based on a number of key features and developments which provide the possibility of probing a large part of the parameter space for a wide range of models with light long-lived super-weakly interacting particles with masses up to O(10) GeV/c(2) in an environment of extremely clean background conditions. This paper describes the proposal for the experimental facility together with the most important feasibility studies. The paper focuses on the challenging new ideas behind the beam extraction and beam delivery, the proton beam dump, and the suppression of beam-induced background.

Abstract

Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) are hypothetical particles predicted by many extensions of the Standard Model. These particles can, among other things, explain the origin of neutrino masses, generate the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe and provide a dark matter candidate. The SHiP experiment will be able to search for HNLs produced in decays of heavy mesons and travelling distances ranging between O(50 m) and tens of kilometers before decaying. We present the sensitivity of the SHiP experiment to a number of HNL's benchmark models and provide a way to calculate the SHiP's sensitivity to HNLs for arbitrary patterns of flavour mixings. The corresponding tools and data files are also made publicly available.

Abstract

An important input for the interpretation of the measurements of the SHiP ex- periment is a good knowledge of the differential charm production cross section, including cascade production. This is a proposal to measure the associated charm production cross section, employing the SPS 400 GeV/c proton beam and a replica of the first two interaction lengths of the SHiP target. The detection of the produc- tion and decay of charmed hadron in the target will be performed through nuclear emulsion films, employed in an Emulsion Cloud Chamber target structure. In order to measure charge and momentum of decay daughters, we intend to build a mag- netic spectrometer using silicon pixel, scintillating fibre and drift tube detectors. A muon tagger will be built using RPCs. An optimization run is scheduled in 2018, while the full measurement will be performed after the second LHC Long Shutdown.

Abstract

Candida albicans is a typical commensal microorganism of the oral cavity that can become virulent in certain conditions and cause denture stomatitis (DS). Many conditions can predispose for DS, including local and systemic alterations. The therapeutical approach to DS is various and both topical and systemic alternatives can be considered. Azoles molecules are the most common used, both topically and systemically, but in recent years various alternatives have been proposed. This review aims to examine the scientific literature to evaluate the effectiveness of conventional therapies and the potential of the new ones.

Abstract

Oral mucosa is constantly under the influence of various internal and external stimuli, therefore it is interested by a range of developmental disorders, irritation, inflammation, and neoplastic conditions. Traumatic fibroma is one of these lesions. The aim of this work is to obtain an ultrasound characterization of a lip fibroma with a high frequency probe (8-18 MHz) as feasibility and experimental model of this non-invasive technique in the oral mucosa compared with its histo-pathological section. Ultrasound characterization of a fibroma in a 50-year-old patient in the right retro commissural area of mucosa was performed. The ultrasound images were compared with its histological image. Fibroma is a traumatic lesion clinically recognizable and with a complex and well-defined histopathology structure. Although further investigations are necessary to determine the potential of ultrasonographic images as an aid in the diagnosis of oral lesions, this case report might be a model for ultrasound imaging compared with its histological section

Abstract

In order to validate the cavity package concept before the module preparation for the European XFEL Injector, one 3.9 GHz cavity, complete with magnetic shielding, power coupler and frequency tuner was tested in a specially designed single cavity cryomodule in one of the caves of the DESY Accelerator Module Test Facility (AMTF). The cavity was tested in high power pulsed operation up to the quench limit of 24 MV/m, above the vertical test qualifications and all subsystems under test (coupler, tuner, waveguide tuners, LLRF system) were qualified to design performances.

Abstract

One batch of 10 cavities has been completed and eight structures have been installed in the 3.9 GHz cryomodule for the European XFEL (E- XFEL) Injector operation. A second batch of 10 RF structures for a spare injector module is under fabrication. The fabrication has been performed according to the European Pressure Vessel regulations, as needed for the E-XFEL operation. This paper describes the fabrication, quality control/assurance procedures and frequency preparation steps in order to achieve cavities at the correct frequency and length within the specifications.

Abstract

The MYRRHA projects aims at the construction of an Accelerator Driven System demonstrator. The criticality will be sustained by an external spallation neutron flux; produced thanks to a 600 MeV high intensity proton beam. This beam will be delivered by a superconducting linac which must fulfil very stringent reliability requirements. To carry out “real scale” reliability-oriented experiments a 700 MHz Cryomodule was developed. Several tests were performed to commission the experimental set-up. We review here the obtained results and the lessons learnt by operating this module, as well as the on-going developments.

Abstract

This report contains a comprehensive technical description of a new international research infrastructure, the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) Facility. It was written between October 2005 and June 2006 and provides a realistic cost estimate and a compelling assessment of the scientific pay-off. The report has been prepared with the contribution of hundreds of people from many laboratories in Europe and even beyond. Their contributions have been harmonised and merged by many editors, and the whole effort has been coordinated by the European Project Team, generously supported and hosted by the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) laboratory.

47. Landau damping of coherent beam-beam modes by overlap with synchrotron side-bands

Abstract

For the nominal LHC parameters the coherent beam-beam pi-mode is outside the incoherent continuum and therefore does not experience Landau damping. Mechanisms to restore damping by reducing the degree of symmetry between the two beams are effective, but may not be desirable due to possible side effects. Since the synchrotron tune and the linear beam-beam tuneshift have the same order of magnitude for the LHC, Landau damping could be provided by overlapping the discrete modes with the synchrotron sidebands of the incoherent continuum. In this report we study this damping effect qualitatively and quantitatively with a strong-strong simulation model.
