Abstract

As 6G wireless networks seek to enable robust and dynamic programmable wireless environments (PWEs), reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a cornerstone for controlling electromagnetic wave propagation. However, realizing the potential of RISs for demanding PWE applications depends on precise and real-time user localization, especially in scenarios with random receiver orientations and inherent hardware imperfections. To address this challenge, we propose a novel optical localization framework that integrates conventional ceiling-mounted LEDs with light-emitting reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (LeRISs). By leveraging the spatial diversity offered by the LeRIS architecture, the framework introduces robust signal paths that improve localization accuracy and reduce errors under varying orientations. To this end, we derive a system of equations for received signal strength-based localization that accounts for random receiver orientations and imposes spatial constraints on LED placement, ensuring unique and reliable solutions. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework achieves precise beam control and high spectral efficiency even for RISs with large number of reflecting elements, establishing our solution as scalable and adaptive for PWEs that require real-time accuracy and flexibility.

Abstract

The evolution toward sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks has introduced programmable wireless environments (PWEs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) as transformative elements for achieving near-deterministic wireless communications. However, the enhanced capabilities of RISs within PWEs, especially as we move toward more complex electromagnetic functions by increasing the number of reflecting elements, underscore the need for high-precision user localization, since inaccurate localization could lead to erroneous configuration of RISs, which would then compromise the effectiveness of PWEs. In this direction, this paper investigates the integration of RISs and optical anchors within PWEs, emphasizing the crucial role of ultra-precise localization in unlocking advanced electromagnetic functionalities. Specifically, we present an in-depth analysis of various localization techniques, both RISbased and RIS-independent, while introducing the concept of empowering PWEs with optical anchors for enhanced localization precision. Our findings highlight that accurate localization is essential to fully exploit the capabilities of RISs, paving the way for future applications. Through this exploration, we contribute to the advancement of PWEs in line with the ambitious goals of the 6G standards and improve the quality of service in next generation wireless networks.

Abstract

In this paper, we demonstrate the communication capabilities of light-fidelity (LiFi) systems based on highbrightness and high-bandwidth integrated laser-based sources in a surface mount device (SMD) packaging platform. The laserbased source is able to deliver 450 lumens of white light illumination and the resultant light brightness is over 1000 cd mm2. It is demonstrated that a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) LiFi system with ten parallel channels is able to deliver over 100 Gbps data rate with the assistance of Volterra filter-based nonlinear equalisers. In addition, an aggregated transmission data rate of 4.8 Gbps has been achieved over a link distance of 500 m with the same type of SMD light source. This work demonstrates the scalability of LiFi systems that employ laserbased light sources, particularly in their capacity to enable highspeed short range, as well as long-range data transmission.

Abstract

In this paper, we study optical simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT) systems employing photovoltaic optical receivers (RXs). To be able to efficiently harvest energy from broadband light, we propose to employ multi-junction photovoltaic cells at the optical RX. We consider the case, where the optical RX is illuminated by ambient light, an intensity-modulated information free space optical (FSO) signal, and since the ambient light may not be always present, a dedicated energy-providing broadband optical signal. Based on the analysis of the equivalent electrical circuit of the multi-junction photovoltaic RX, we model the current flow through the photovoltaic cell and derive a novel accurate and two novel approximate energy harvesting (EH) models for the two cases, where the optical RX is equipped with a single and multiple p-n junctions, respectively. We derive the optimal distribution of the transmit information signal that maximizes the achievable information rate. We validate the proposed EH models by circuit simulations and show that the photovoltaic RXs saturate for high received signal powers. For single-junction RXs, we compare the proposed EH model with two well-known baseline models and demonstrate that, in contrast to the proposed EH model, they are not able to fully capture the RX non-linearity. Since multi-junction RXs allow a more efficient allocation of the optical power, they are more robust against saturation, and thus, are able to harvest significantly more power and achieve higher data rates than RXs employing a single p-n junction. Abstract

A primary objective of the forthcoming sixth generation (6G) of wireless networking is to support demanding applications, while ensuring energy efficiency. Programmable wireless environments (PWEs) have emerged as a promising solution, leveraging reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), to control wireless propagation and deliver exceptional quality-ofservice. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a network supported by zero-energy RISs (zeRISs), which harvest energy for their operation and contribute to the realization of PWEs. Specifically, we investigate joint energy-data rate outage probability and the energy efficiency of a zeRIS-assisted communication system by employing three harvest-and-reflect (HaR) methods, i) power splitting, ii) time switching, and iii) element splitting. Furthermore, we consider two zeRIS deployment strategies, namely BS-side zeRIS and UE-side zeRIS. Simulation results validate the provided analysis and examine which HaR method performs better depending on the zeRIS placement. Finally, valuable insights and conclusions for the performance of zeRISassisted wireless networks are drawn from the presented results.

Abstract

In this paper, we study optical simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems, where a photovoltaic optical receiver (RX) is illuminated by ambient light and an intensity-modulated free space optical (FSO) signal. To facilitate simultaneous information reception and energy harvesting (EH) at the RX, the received optical signal is first converted to an electrical signal, and then, its alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) components are separated and utilized for information decoding and EH, respectively. By accurately analysing the equivalent electrical circuit of the photovoltaic RX, we model the current flow through the photovoltaic p-n junction in both the low and high input power regimes using a two-diode model of the p-n junction and we derive a closed-form non-linear EH model that characterizes the harvested power at the RX. Furthermore, taking into account the non-linear behaviour of the photovoltaic RX on information reception, we derive the optimal distribution of the transmit information signal that maximizes the achievable information rate. The proposed EH model is validated by circuit simulation results. Furthermore, we compare with two baseline models based on maximum power point (MPP) tracking at the RX and a single-diode p-n junction model, respectively, and demonstrate that in contrast to the proposed EH model, they are not able to fully capture the non-linearity of photovoltaic optical RXs. Abstract

Machine learning (ML) empowers biomedical systems with the capability to optimize their performance through modeling of the available data extremely well, without using strong assumptions about the modeled system. Especially in nano-scale biosystems, where the generated data sets are too vast and complex to mentally parse without computational assist, ML is instrumental in analyzing and extracting new insights, accelerating material and structure discoveries, and designing experience as well as supporting nano-scale communications and networks. However, despite these efforts, the use of ML in nano-scale biomedical engineering remains still under-explored in certain areas and research challenges are still open in fields such as structure and material design and simulations, communications and signal processing, and bio-medicine applications. In this article, we review the existing research regarding the use of ML in nano-scale biomedical engineering. In more detail, we first identify and discuss the main challenges that can be formulated as ML problems. These challenges are classified into the three aforementioned main categories. Next, we discuss the state of the art ML methodologies that are used to countermeasure the aforementioned challenges. For each of the presented methodologies, special emphasis is given to its principles, applications, and limitations. Abstract

In this paper, we study simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT) systems employing photovoltaic optical receivers (RXs). We consider the case, where the optical RX is illuminated by ambient light and an intensity-modulated information-carrying free space optical (FSO) signal. To overcome the possible absence of ambient light, e.g., indoors or at night, we additionally assume that the optical RX receives a dedicated energy-bearing broadband optical signal. Additionally, to efficiently harvest energy from broadband light, we propose a novel optical RX based on multi-junction photovoltaic cells. Exploiting the analysis of the equivalent two-diode electrical circuit for the multi-junction photovoltaic RX, we carefully model the current flow through the photovoltaic cell and derive an accurate energy harvesting (EH) model. Furthermore, we also derive novel approximate EH models for the two cases, where the optical RX is equipped with a single and multiple p-n junctions, respectively. Next, we derive the distribution of the transmit information signal that maximizes the achievable information rate and, for a practical pulse amplitude modulated information signal, we determine the symbol error rate at the RX. We validate the proposed EH models by circuit simulations and show that the photovoltaic RXs saturate for high received signal powers. For single-junction RXs, we compare the proposed EH model with two well-known baseline EH models, which are based on maximum point tracking and a single-diode electrical circuit, respectively. We demonstrate that, in contrast to the proposed EH model, both baseline EH models are not able to fully capture the non-linear behavior of photovoltaic RXs. Moreover, our results reveal that, since multi-junction RXs allow a more efficient allocation of the optical power, they are more robust against saturation, and thus, are able to harvest significantly more power and achieve higher data rates than RXs employing a single p-n junction. Finally, we highlight a tradeoff between the information rate and harvested power in SLIPT systems and demonstrate that the proposed transmit signal distribution yields significantly higher achievable information rates compared to uniformly distributed transmit signals, which are optimal for linear optical information RXs.

Abstract

This article investigates the use of a visible light positioning system in an indoor environment to provide a three dimensional (3D) high‐accuracy solution. The proposed system leveraged the use of a single light‐emitting diode and an image sensor at the transmitter and the receiver (Rx) respectively. The proposed system can retrieve the 3D coordinate of the Rx using a combination of the angle of arrival and received signal strength (RSS). To mitigate the error induced by the lens at the Rx, a novel method is proposed and experimentally tested. The authors show that, the proposed method outperforms previously reported RSS under all circumstances and it is immune to varying exposure times within the standard range of 250 µs to 4 ms. The authors experimentally demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can achieve a 3D root mean squared error of 7.56 cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

24. Proactive Resource Allocation for Aggregated VLC/RF Networks With Outdated CSI

Abstract

In this letter, the case of an aggregated VLC/RF network is presented, where the users can be served simultaneously by both a visible light communication (VLC) carrier and a radio-frequency (RF) carrier to increase their achievable data rate. The optimal resource allocation in the network is dependent on always having accurate channel state information (CSI), otherwise, in the case of outdated CSI, the system is prone to sub-optimally allocating resources and, due to the limited coverage of VLC, users may also experience outage. A closed-form expression for the coverage probability is presented for a user moving randomly in the cell. Using this, a proactive resource allocation algorithm is proposed that takes into account outdated CSI which can occur due to user movement, and ensures the outage probability is low in the network without diminishing the average achievable data rate of users. Finally, simulation results validate the proposed analysis and showcase the effectiveness of this approach.

25. Over-the-Air Computing With Imperfect CSI: Design and Performance Optimization

Abstract

Over-the-air computing (AirComp) has recently attracted considerable attention as an efficient method of data fusion by integrating uncoded communication transmissions with computation thanks to the signal superposition offered by the multiple access channels. However, appropriate processing is required to neutralize the wireless channel effect. As, internet-of-things (IoT) applications through low-cost devices is the main target of AirComp, perfect availability of channel state information (CSI) is not always practical, there is the need to investigate the effect of imperfect CSI on AirComp. Specifically, we present novel closed-form expressions for tight approximations that can be used to design and evaluate AirComp systems. Furthermore, we design a general optimization framework that takes into account both magnitude and phase errors in the CSI. Finally, a pilot retransmission policy is designed, that offers trade-off between resources cost and the gain in the accuracy of the computations. In order to validate its application, a utility function of the cost of retransmission is introduced, namely, Retransmission Policy Cost (RPC), which can incorporate the power or throughput cost opposing to the expected gain of the selected policy. Simulations show the deterioration caused by the imperfect CSI and highlight the added value of the proposed policy under various system conditions.

Abstract

Optimizing the energy efficiency (EE) of wireless networks is one of the key priorities in the design of beyond 5G mobile technologies. In this pursuit, the use of new frequency bands, in combination with advanced multiple access protocols and cooperative communications strategies, has recently shown promising results. To this end, this paper investigates an indoor wireless network that aggregates communication resources in visible light and radio-frequency (RF) bands, taking advantage of the complementary aspects of the two technologies. More specifically, a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme is introduced for the visible light communication (VLC) downlink, such that cell-edge users experiencing a weak VLC signal enhance their aggregated data rate with the aid of cooperative communications over RF sidelinks (i.e., device-to-device links). The optimal resource allocation strategy over both VLC and RF bands is derived aiming at EE maximization based on the Dinkelbach’s algorithm and successive convex approximation. Additionally, for the sake of flexibility, a weighted EE metric is proposed for the characterization of the aggregated VLC/RF network performance. Simulation results are provided to validate the proposed analysis, revealing the impact of various design and system parameters, such as the weighting factors, quality of service requirements, and channel conditions.

Abstract

Deliverable D4.1 of project ASHVIN (Assistants for Healthy, Safe, and Productive Virtual Construction Design, Operation & Maintenance using a Digital Twin Project Acronym) This document describes performance indicators that contribute to productivity, resource efficient, and safe construction works. Report also summaries the tools that will be developed within ASHVIN project and support tracking of progress of construction works. The most important tools and methodologies are: ASHVIN platform dashboards that provide a rich environment to consider and manage the performance indicators; Construction monitoring tool with productivity and safety KPI decision making dashboard (4DV-C); Privacy ensuring safety management, simulation, and training tool (SMT); A configuration management tool to track as-designed and as-built, as well as, to allow for seamless commissioning (CMT); Simulation-based real-time construction site and logistics planning tool (DES); Multi-physics model matching tool for status assessment of bridges and buildings (MATCHFEM); Lean project planning methodology. According to the interviews performed with managers of construction sites the number of times the site is getting organized and cleaned influences not only the safety of a site but also the productivity. In addition, the number of tasks that must be redone/corrected influences the morale of the workers and therefore the productivity of the work as well as the costs and the resources that are being used to finish up that task. ASHVIN project will support the calculation of following Performance Indicators: Percentage Plan Complete, Non-productive working time of professional, component properties, productivity rate, waste factor, number of concurrent trades on site, percentage of available space used, utilisation rate of equipment, number (and severity) of reported issues related to the accidents on construction site, safety factor, strength of structural components, cost of equipment and workers. Those indicators will be measured and checked on three ASHVIN demonstration projects: #4 Logistic hall construction in Germany, #5 Kineum office building in Sweden, #6 Office buildings in Spain. Abstract

Deliverable D7.1 of project ASHVIN (Assistants for Healthy, Safe, and Productive Virtual Construction Design, Operation & Maintenance using a Digital Twin Project Acronym), ASHVIN aims at the digitalization of the construction industry to increase productivity, resource efficiency, and safety. Towards this goal, digital twin technology is only one means to an end. Therefore, the core of all ASHVIN development aims at introducing two major process innovations enabled by the possibility to closely match as-build information with as-designed information throughout the product development lifecycle that is made possible by digital twin technology. This report presents a plan for implementation of the ASHVIN platform and tools in the demonstration projects. For each of the demonstration project relevant challenges and needs are described, based on that appropriate tools and monitoring devices can be planned. It is significant to show that various type of structures (buildings, bridges, and industrial buildings) has different problems and boundary condition. Only after examination and understanding of the problems and challenges that each construction site faces it is possible to correctly apply new solution. Abstract

Reported COVID-19 deaths in Germany are relatively low as compared to many European countries. Among the several explanations proposed, an early and large testing of the population was put forward. Most current debates on COVID-19 focus on the differences among countries, but little attention has been given to regional differences and diet. The low-death rate European countries (e.g. Austria, Baltic States, Czech Republic, Finland, Norway, Poland, Slovakia) have used different quarantine and/or confinement times and methods and none have performed as many early tests as Germany. Among other factors that may be significant are the dietary habits. It seems that some foods largely used in these countries may reduce angiotensin-converting enzyme activity or are anti-oxidants. Among the many possible areas of research, it might be important to understand diet and angiotensin-converting enzyme-2 (ACE2) levels in populations with different COVID-19 death rates since dietary interventions may be of great benefit.

Abstract

The development of Information Systems today faces the era of Big Data. Large volumes of information need to be processed in real-time, for example, for Facebook or Twitter analysis. This paper addresses the redesign of NewsAsset, a commercial product that helps journalists by providing services, which analyzes millions of media items from the social network in real-time. Technologies like Apache Storm can help enormously in this context. We have quantitatively analyzed the new design of NewsAsset to assess whether the introduction of Apache Storm can meet the demanding performance requirements of this media product. Our assessment approach, guided by the Unified Modeling Language (UML), takes advantage, for performance analysis, of the software designs already used for development. In addition, we converted UML into a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) for Apache Storm, thus creating a profile for Storm. Later, we transformed said DSML into an appropriate language for performance evaluation, specifically, stochastic Petri nets.
