Background and hypothesisIn the United States, women with schizophrenia face challenges in receiving gynecologic care, but little is known about how cervical cancer screening rates vary across time or states in a publicly insured population. We hypothesized that women Medicaid beneficiaries with schizophrenia would be less likely to receive cervical cancer screening across the United States compared with a control population, and that women with schizophrenia and other markers of vulnerability would be least likely to receive screening.Study designThis retrospective cohort study used US Medicaid administrative data from across 44 states between 2002 and 2012 and examined differences in cervical cancer screening test rates among 283 950 female Medicaid beneficiaries with schizophrenia and a frequency-matched control group without serious mental illness, matched on age and race/ethnicity. Among women with schizophrenia, multivariable logistic regression estimated the odds of receiving cervical cancer screening using individual sociodemographics, comorbid conditions, and health care service utilization.Study resultsCompared to the control group, women with schizophrenia were less likely to receive cervical cancer screening (OR = 0.76; 95% CI 0.75-0.77). Among women with schizophrenia, nonwhite populations, younger women, urban dwellers, those with substance use disorders, anxiety, and depression and those connected to primary care were more likely to complete screening.ConclusionsCervical cancer screening rates among US women Medicaid beneficiaries with schizophrenia were suboptimal. To address cervical cancer care disparities for this population, interventions are needed to prioritize women with schizophrenia who are less engaged with the health care system or who reside in rural areas.

Objective: The present study aimed to assess the current knowledge and uptake of Papanicolaou (Pap) tests for cervical screening among Saudi women, including barriers to undergoing the test and the availability of related services. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted using a health questionnaire administered through the Absher portal between April 1, 2019, and March 31, 2020. The questionnaire consisted of five questions and took less than 5 min to complete. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze demographic variables, and chi‐square tests were used to examine the association between these variables and Pap test uptake. Results: The questionnaire included 8194 Saudi women, with the majority from Makkah (24.40%), Riyadh (21.92%), and Eastern (14.44%) regions. Only 22.52% of respondents had ever received a Pap test, and among them, 17.48% did so based on their physician's recommendation. Private clinics accounted for 10.73% of Pap test locations, while public clinics accounted for 8.97%. The primary reasons for not undergoing the test were lack of knowledge regarding its importance (40.24%) and lack of information from physicians (16.96%). Knowledge of the Pap test as a cervical screening method was significantly associated with marital status, Saudi region, and age group. Conclusions: This study revealed low awareness of the Pap test for cervical screening among Saudi women, particularly in younger age groups. Targeted educational initiatives are essential to increase awareness and emphasize the significance of regular screenings, especially among younger individuals, to enhance early detection and reduce the burden of cervical cancer in Saudi Arabia. Background: Precancerous lesions, conditions associated with exposure to human papillomavirus (HPV), threaten women's health at different stages of life, from adolescence to old age. It has been observed that a low-cost strategy, such as visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA), reveals cervical lesions, while establishing interventions that allow modifying the course of the disease, thus improving women's quality of life. Objective: To determine the validity of VIA in comparison with cervical cytology for the detection of precancerous lesions. Material and methods: Descriptive, observational, crosssectional, prospective, analytical study. The type of sampling was non-probabilistic. The sample consisted of 638 participants. Data were collected with a data collection form and analyzed quantitatively with the SPSS software. The study complied with the provisions of the General Health Law on Research in Mexico and was approved by the local research committee of the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS, according to its initials in Spanish). Results: VIA compared with cervical cytology showed a sensitivity of 75%, a specificity of 98%, a positive predictive value of 47%, a negative predictive value of 99%, a positive post-test probability of 97%, and a concordance of 61%. Cervical cancer screening during pregnancy presents unique challenges for cytologic interpretation. This review focuses on pregnancy-associated cytomorphological changes and their impact on diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer. Pregnancy-induced alterations include navicular cells, hyperplastic endocervical cells, immature metaplastic cells, and occasional decidual cells or trophoblasts. These changes can mimic abnormalities such as koilocytosis, adenocarcinoma in situ, and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, potentially leading to misdiagnosis. Careful attention to nuclear features and awareness of pregnancy-related changes are crucial for correct interpretation. The natural history of CIN during pregnancy shows higher regression rates, particularly for CIN 2, with minimal risk of progression. Management of abnormal cytology follows modified risk-based guidelines to avoid invasive procedures, with treatment typically deferred until postpartum. The findings reported in this review emphasize the importance of considering pregnancy status in cytological interpretation, highlight potential problems, and provide guidance on differentiating benign pregnancy-related changes from true abnormalities. Understanding these nuances is essential for accurate diagnosis and proper management of cervical abnormalities in pregnant women.

Abstract Background Breast and cervical cancer are major public health issues globally. The reduction in incidence and mortality rates of these cancers is linked to effective prevention, early detection, and appropriate treatment measures. This study aims to analyze the temporal trends in the prevalence of mammography and Papanicolaou test coverage among women living in Brazilian state capitals between 2007 and 2023, and to compare the coverage of these tests before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods A time series study was conducted using data from the Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases by Telephone Survey from 2007 to 2023. The variables analyzed included mammography and Papanicolaou test coverage according to education level, age group, race/skin color, regions, and Brazilian capitals. The Prais-Winsten regression model was used to analyze the time series, and Student’s t-test was employed to compare the prevalence rates between 2019 and 2023. Results Between 2007 and 2023, mammography coverage showed a stationary trend (71.1% in 2007 and 73.1% in 2023; p-value = 0.75) with a declining trend observed among women with 12 years or more of education (APC= -0.52% 95%CI -1.01%; -0.02%). Papanicolaou test coverage for all women aged between 25 and 64 exhibited a downward trend from 82% in 2007 to 76.8% in 2023 (APC= -0.45% 95%CI -0.76%; -0.13%). This decline was also noticed among those with 9 years or more of education; in the 25 to 44 age group; among women with white and mixed race; and in the Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South regions. When comparing coverage before and during Covid-19 pandemic, a reduction was noted for both tests. Conclusions Over the years, there has been stability in mammography coverage and a decline in Papanicolaou test. The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted the number of these tests carried out among women, highlighting the importance of actions aimed at increasing coverage, especially among the most vulnerable groups.

Objective. To compare the adequacy, agreement, and acceptability of Papanicolaou testing (cytology) for cervical cancer screening using self-collected samples compared to physician-collected samples in Grenada in the Caribbean. Furthermore, the study identifies the human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes present among asymptomatic women testing positive for HPV, the etiologic cause of cervical cancer. Methods. Participants were divided into two groups and two cervical samples were collected from the women in each group: a self-collected sample and a physician-collected sample. Cervical specimens were tested for cytology and HPV. HPV genotyping was performed on positive specimens. Results. Self-collected samples were adequate and in agreement with physician-collected samples, showing no difference between the two sampling methods. Oncogenic high-risk HPV genotypes were identified in cervical samples which were positive for atypical squamous cells and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions. The high-risk HPV genotypes found, notably HPV 45 and 53, differed from those most commonly reported. Although the commonly reported high-risk genotypes HPV 16 and 18 were found, so were 31, 33, 35, 52, 66, 68, and 82. Conclusions. Using self-collection facilitated the discovery of unexpected HPV genotypes among asymptomatic women in Grenada. These findings add new information to the literature regarding cervical cancer and neoplasia screening and HPV genotypes in the Caribbean. This genotype information may impact surveillance of women with low-grade lesions, HPV vaccine selection, and possibly further vaccine research. Research regarding HPV in Caribbean pathology samples of cervical neoplasia and cancer is needed.

Background Methods Results Conclusion Oral cancer screening requires analysis capable of detecting changes preceding the clinical manifestation. Oral cytopathology studies as an oral cancer screening have shown promising results. This study aims to evaluate the use of cytopathology in a quali‐quantitative analysis using Papanicoloau staining.Four experimental groups were evaluated: control (CG), exposed to carcinogens (EG), potentially malignant disorder with and without epithelial dysplasia (D‐OPMDG and ND‐OPMDG) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCCG). Oral smears were collected using a Cytobrush® and conventional exfoliative cytology.Oral Papanicolaou smears from 143 individuals were analysed in 8100 images. Qualitatively, non‐lesional groups exhibited minimal suspected cases (20% in CG and 5% in EG), in the OPMD groups the ability to identify altered cells was low (40% in D‐OPMDG and 0% in ND‐OPMDG). Conversely, a notable 100% accuracy was achieved in the OSCCG. Quantitatively, a higher percentage of anucleated and a lower percentage of intermediate cells were observed in the OPMDG; a higher proportion of parabasal/suspicious cells was observed in OSCCG. The optimal threshold for improved accuracy in detecting suspected malignancies occurs when the count of parabasal/suspicious cells exceeds 8/100 cells examined. Cytomorphometric analysis revealed a higher nucleus/cytoplasm ratio (N/C) in OSCCG, with a best cutoff point indicating enhanced accuracy in discerning suspected malignancies when exceeding 17% of cells exhibiting this elevated ratio.It is possible to suggest updates in cytomorphometric and quantitative analysis in the modified Bethesda system for the oral cavity including objective criteria in the risk classification, therefore improving oral cancer screening. Effective feedback on cytology performance relies on navigating complex laboratory information system data, which is prone to errors and lacks flexibility. As a comprehensive solution, we used the Python programming language to create a dashboard application for screening and diagnostic quality metrics. Data from the 5-year period (2018-2022) were accessed. Versatile open-source Python libraries (user developed program code packages) were used from the first step of LIS data cleaning through the creation of the application. To evaluate performance, we selected 3 gynecologic metrics: the ASC/LSIL ratio, the ASC-US/ASC-H ratio, and the proportion of cytologic abnormalities in comparison to the total number of cases (abnormal rate). We also evaluated the referral rate of cytologists/cytotechnologists (CTs) and the ratio of thyroid AUS interpretations by cytopathologists (CPs). These were formed into colored graphs that showcase individual results in established, color-coded laboratory "goal," "borderline," and "attention" zones based on published reference benchmarks. A representation of the results distribution for the entire laboratory was also developed. We successfully created a web-based test application that presents interactive dashboards with different interfaces for the CT, CP, and laboratory management (https://drkvcsstvn-dashboards.hf.space/app). The user can choose to view the desired quality metric, year, and the anonymized CT or CP, with an additional automatically generated written report of results. Background: Atypical glandular cells (AGCs) diagnosis on Pap (Papanicolaou) smears are uncommon and may represent various benign and malignant lesions. Objective: This study aims to report the incidence of AGC on Pap smear, to study the relationship of AGC with malignancy, and to determine cytomorphological features that help in predicting malignancy. Materials and Methods: Retrospective analytical study conducted in the Department of Oncopathology at Tertiary Cancer and Research Institute. In this retrospective study, we included cases diagnosed with AGC between July 2017 to July 2022. All slides were reviewed and subclassified according to the Bethesda 2014 classification system (TBS). The predetermined cytomorphological features observed in the smears were recorded. The follow-up histopathological diagnoses of the cases were retrieved. The significant cytomorphological and clinicopathological findings for malignancy were determined. Results: Pearson χ2 test with SPSS software version 22 to compare cytologic features of cases with benign and malignant follow-up. The significant cytomorphological features observed in neoplastic cases were cells in 3-dimensional clusters, nuclear overlapping, reniform nucleus, irregular nuclear membrane, increased nuclear size, single macronucleoli, engulfed neutrophils, and prominently vacuolated cytoplasm. Conclusions: The diagnosis of AGC on cytology is associated with clinically significant lesions, and cytomorphologic parameters can be used to predict the benign and malignant outcome.

BackgroundThrough adequate screening and follow-up, cervical cancer can be prevented or detected at early-stage (stage I), which is related to excellent survival. Current guidelines recommend discontinuing screening for women ≥65 years with history of normal Pap and/or HPV tests, potentially leaving this age group vulnerable. This study examined late-stage disease in a population-based cohort.MethodsUsing California Cancer Registry data, we identified 12,442 patients ages ≥21 years with a first primary cervical cancer diagnosed during 2009-2018. Proportions of late-stage disease (stages II-IV) and early- and late-stage 5-year relative survival are presented by the age group. Among patients ages ≥65 years, multivariable logistic regression estimated associations of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics with late-stage cervical cancer.ResultsNearly one fifth of patients (n = 2,171, 17.4%) were ≥65 years. BackgroundFamilies use social media group chats to connect with each other about daily life and to share information. Although cancer is not a frequent topic of conversation in family settings, the adoption of mobile technology in the family context presents a novel opportunity to promote cancer prevention information. To the best of our knowledge, few studies have used private social media group chats to promote cancer prevention information to family members.ObjectiveIn this formative study, we investigated how family group chat platforms can be leveraged to encourage colorectal cancer screening, human papillomavirus vaccination, and cervical cancer screening among intergenerational Vietnamese American families. This study aimed to cocreate a family-based communication intervention for introducing cancer screening information in family group chats. We sought to understand family members' motivations for using group chats, family dynamics and conversation patterns, and group chat experiences and cultural norms for interacting with family members.MethodsOverall, 20 audio-recorded and semistructured interviews were conducted with young Vietnamese adults. The study was conducted between August and October 2018. Participants were Vietnamese Americans; aged between 18 and 44 years; living in Orange County, California; had an existing family group chat; and expressed an interest in becoming family health advocates. Data were analyzed using a framework analysis.ResultsIn total, 13 (65%) of the 20 young adults reported having >1 group chat with their immediate and extended family. Preventive health was not a typical topic of family conversations, but food, family announcements, personal updates, humorous videos or photos, and current events were. Young adults expressed openness to initiating conversations with family members about cancer prevention; however, they also raised concerns that may influence family members' receptivity to the messages. Themes that could potentially impact family members' willingness to accept cancer prevention messages included family status and hierarchy, gender dynamics, relational closeness in the family, and source trust and credibility. These considerations may impact whether families will be open to receiving cancer screening information and acting on it. The participants also mentioned practical considerations for intervention and message design, which included the Vietnamese cultural conversation etiquette of hỏi thăm, respect for a physician's recommendation, prevention versus symptom orientation, the family health advocate's bilingual capacity, and the busy lives of family members. In response to exemplar messages, participants mentioned that they preferred to personalize template messages to accommodate conversational norms in their family group chats.ConclusionsThe findings of this study inform the development of a social media intervention for increasing preventive cancer screening in Vietnamese American families.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the implementation rate and influencing factors of confirmatory tests for women with abnormal cervical cytology results in the Korean nationwide cervical cancer screening program. Methods: The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database was utilized to identify all Korean women who have participated in the Korean nationwide cervical cancer screening program from January 2011 and December 2021 using the NHIS database. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the multivariate odds ratio and evaluate the patients' characteristics. Results: The rate of abnormal Papanicolaou (Pap) smears showed an initial increase from 2011 to 2015 and subsequently reached a plateau after 2016. When examining specific subcategories, cases of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) increased from 28,546 cases (1.1%) in 2011 to 62,850 cases (1.7%) in 2021. In contrast, cases of HSIL and SCC declined from 3,535 cases (0.14%) to 2,763 cases (0.07%) and from 383 cases (0.01%) to 179 cases (0.005%), respectively. Furthermore, the implementation rate of confirmatory tests for women with abnormal cytology increased from 8,865 cases (21.0%) in 2011 to 39,045 cases (51.2%) in 2021. Regarding the specific subcategory of ASC-US, the number of confirmatory tests exhibited a substantial increase from 4,101 cases (14.4%) in 2011 to 30,482 cases (48.5%) in 2021. For SCC, there was no significant change, with 216 cases (56.4%) in 2011 and 102 cases (57.0%) in 2021. The implementation rate of confirmatory tests was found to be significantly associated with results of abnormal Pap smear, age, and residence. Notably, economic status did not emerge as a significant factor affecting the likelihood of undergoing confirmatory tests. Conclusions: The severity of abnormal Pap smear results is a reliable indicator of the probability of undergoing a confirmatory test. Objectives: We aimed to assess self-reported participation in cervical cancer screening among Polish women between 2004 and 2019 and to identify the groups with the lowest participation rate. Material and methods: Data on declared participation in cervical cancer screening were obtained from the European Health Interview Survey from 2004 to 2019. Results: In 2019, 86.7% of Polish women aged ≥ 15 years declared that they had ever undergone a Pap test. Compared to 2004, the coverage of ever-screened women improved by 16.6 percentage points. The proxy population coverage was 72.9%. The highest proportion of women who underwent a Pap smear in the last three years was observed among those aged 35-44 years and 25-34 years (84.0% and 83.2%, respectively), and the lowest among women aged ≥ 75 years (20.5%). The proportion screened within the last three years also varied by education (up to lower secondary education 26.4%, up to post-secondary non-tertiary education 62.8%, and the highest level of education 83.7%), urbanization (large cities 66.7%, suburbs, and smaller cities 62.8%, and rural areas 59.0%), income (poorest households 42.5%, wealthiest households 70.6%), and declared health status (best 68.9%, worst 41.4%). The lowest participation in screening was observed in the southeastern regions and the highest in the northwestern regions of Poland. Conclusions: In Poland, in 2019, the approximate coverage of cervical cancer screening was high compared to other European countries and has improved over the last 15 years. A complete screening registry is required to confirm questionnaire-based self-reported data. Abstract Background The wide availability of routine screening with Papanicolaou (Pap) tests and vaccinations against human papillomavirus has resulted in a decline in rates of cervical cancer. As with other diseases, however, disparities in incidence and mortality persist. Cervical cancer, is found more often, at later stages, and has worse outcomes in people who live in rural areas, identify as Black or Hispanic, and in people who are incarcerated. Studies report 4–5 times higher rates of cervical cancer incidence in people detained in jails and prisons than in community-based samples. Studies to explain cervical cancer differences have been inconclusive, though there is broad consensus that issues of access play a role. In this study, we sought to learn more from people who have a history of criminal-legal system involvement and substance use about what barriers and facilitators they perceive in accessing cervical cancer preventive health and other support services in the community. Results We conducted semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions by telephone with 20 self-identified women, ages 22–58, in Birmingham, Alabama. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed and the transcripts analyzed using immersion-crystallization techniques. Our team identified two main themes, making connections: the importance of interpersonal communication, which stressed barriers and facilitators related to what makes for effective and humanistic interactions in cervical health prevention and other services, and getting it done: the logistics of access and availability, which highlighted elements of cost and payment; scheduling; transportation; and clinic policies. Conclusions People with a history of criminal-legal system involvement and substance abuse meet with a variety of enabling and impeding factors at personal and interpersonal as well as systemic levels in obtaining cervical health services. To better ensure that women in this high-risk group have equitable access to cervical cancer prevention and treatment—and thus better cancer outcomes—will require multilevel efforts that include an emphasis on improving the human connection in health care encounters and improving the nuts-and-bolts logistics related to accessing that care.

Abstract Background Cervical cancer remains the fourth most frequently diagnosed cancer among women, and its impact is particularly significant in women residing in less developed countries. This study aims to assess socioeconomic inequality in using Papanicolaou tests, commonly known as Pap tests, which are crucial for detecting cervical cancer. Abstract Objective To explore the relative sensitivity of different methods for detecting cervical glandular lesions. Methods A total of 225 patients with cervical glandular lesions diagnosed from January 2018 to February 2023 were retrieved from the pathology database of Guangdong Maternal and Child Health Hospital, and their clinicopathological features were reviewed. Results Four human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes: HPV18, 16, 45, and 52, dominated all glandular lesions, and accounting for 74.10% of HPV-positive tumors. Furthermore, 36.89% of abnormal squamous cells were diagnosed as abnormal based on cytological examinations leading to the detection of cervical glandular lesions; only 16.89% were diagnosed based on the initial detection of abnormal glandular cytology. The most common abnormal cervical screening result was ASC-US on cytology (14.22%), followed by HSIL (11.56%). Only few number of patients were diagnosed with or suspected of having cervical adenopathy via a Pap test (18.22%). Nearly one-third of cervical glandular lesions cases were not detected on the Pap test; but were diagnosed upon cervical biopsy or based on the histological examination of ECC, LEEP, or CKC specimens. The LEEP or CKC biopsy specimens had negative margins in 49 cases (40.83%), while the margins were positive in the other 71 cases (59.17%). Five cases (10.20%) with negative margins still had residual lesions following total hysterectomy, and 19 (26.76%) with positive margins had no residual lesions after total hysterectomy. Conclusion The ability to detect cervical glandular lesions varies for routine HPV genotyping, Pap test, or biopsy/ECC, with different sensitivities and advantages and disadvantages for each method.

Abstract Objective To compare cytological and histological results from women > 64 years old who followed the Brazilian national cervical cancer screening guidelines with those who did not. Methods The present observational retrospective study analyzed 207 abnormal cervical smear results from women > 64 years old in a mid-sized city in Brazil over 14 years. All results were reported according to the Bethesda System. The women were divided into those who followed the screening guidelines and those who did not. Results Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion cytology results were found in 128 (62.2%) cases. Of these, 112 (87.5%) had repeated cytology with positive results. The other 79 (38.1%) with abnormal results should have been referred to colposcopy and biopsy. Out of 41 (51.9%) biopsied women, 23 (29.1%) had a confirmed diagnosis of neoplasia or precursor lesion. In contrast, among the 78 (37.7%) biopsied patients, 40 (51.3%) followed the guideline recommendations, with 9 (22.5%) positive biopsies. Of the 38 (48.7%) women who did not follow the guidelines, there were 24 (63.1%) positive results. Women who did not follow the guidelines demonstrated higher chances of cancer and precursor lesions (odds ratio [OR]: 5.904; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.188–15.932; p = 0.0002). Conclusion Women > 64 years old who did not follow the national screening protocol showed significant differences in the frequency of abnormal results and severity of diagnosis compared with those who followed the protocol.

Background: The wide availability of routine screening with Papanicolaou (Pap) tests and vaccinations against human papillomavirus has resulted in a decline in rates of cervical cancer. As with other diseases, however, disparities in incidence and mortality persist. Cervical cancer, is found more often, at later stages, and has worse outcomes in people who live in rural areas, identify as Black or Hispanic, and in people who are incarcerated. Studies report 4–5 times higher rates of cervical cancer incidence in people detained in jails and prisons than in community-based samples. Studies to explain cervical cancer differences have been inconclusive, though there is broad consensus that issues of access play a role. In this study, we sought to learn more from people who have a history of criminal-legal system involvement and substance use about what barriers and facilitators they perceive in accessing cervical cancer preventive health and other support services in the community. Results: We conducted semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions by telephone with 20 self-identified women, ages 22–58, in Birmingham, Alabama. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed and the transcripts analyzed using immersion-crystallization techniques. Our team identified two main themes, making connections: the importance of interpersonal communication, which stressed barriers and facilitators related to what makes for effective and humanistic interactions in cervical health prevention and other services, and getting it done: the logistics of access and availability, which highlighted elements of cost and payment; scheduling; transportation; and clinic policies. Conclusions: People with a history of criminal-legal system involvement and substance abuse meet with a variety of enabling and impeding factors at personal and interpersonal as well as systemic levels in obtaining cervical health services. To better ensure that women in this high-risk group have equitable access to cervical cancer prevention and treatment—and thus better cancer outcomes—will require multilevel efforts that include an emphasis on improving the human connection in health care encounters and improving the nuts-and-bolts logistics related to accessing that care. Cervical cancer, primarily caused by high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) types 16 and 18, is a major global health concern. Persistent HR-HPV infection can progress from reversible precancerous lesions to invasive cervical cancer, which is driven by the oncogenic activity of human papillomavirus (HPV) genes, particularly E6 and E7. Traditional screening methods, including cytology and HPV testing, have limited sensitivity and specificity. This review explores the application of p16/Ki-67 dual-staining cytology for cervical cancer screening. This advanced immunocytochemical method allows for simultaneously detecting p16 and Ki-67 proteins within cervical epithelial cells, offering a more specific approach for triaging HPV-positive women. Dual staining and traditional methods are compared, demonstrating their high sensitivity and negative predictive value but low specificity. The increased sensitivity of dual staining results in higher detection rates of CIN2+ lesions, which is crucial for preventing cervical cancer progression. However, its low specificity may lead to increased false-positive results and unnecessary biopsies. The implications of integrating dual staining into contemporary screening strategies, particularly considering the evolving landscape of HPV vaccination and changes in HPV genotype prevalence, are also discussed. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women worldwide. It is believed that Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is responsible for 100% of cervical cancers. 200 HPV genotypes have been identified to date, of which 13--15 are high-risk HPV genotypes infecting the genital area. 218 females suffering from high-risk HPV infection and showing a negative cytology test were selected in a retrospective cross-sectional study and divided into two groups: 1. HPV 16/18 (121 women) and 2. Other highrisk HPV (OHrHPV) (97 women). The demographic and clinical data were collected from Motahari clinic, Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, between September 2020 and January 2023. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS software version 26. Data analysis was carried out using chi-square, t-test, and Mann-Whitney, and p < 0.05 was defined as being statistically significant for all the aforementioned tests. The mean age for the HPV 16/18 and OHrHPV groups were 35.27 ± 7.698 and 36.58 ± 8.756, respectively. The most prevalent HPV genotype was HPV type 16 (n = 96) in the population, followed by HPV type 18 (n = 25) and HPV type 31 (n = 17). The HPV 16/18 group had 15 high-grade colposcopy results, while only four similar results were observed in the OHrHPV group (p value = 0.031). The most prevalent HPV genotype in patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) 2 and CIN3 was HPV16. The cytology test failed to identify over 4% of the lesions in the OHrHPV group. It is thought that numerous genotypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) are associated with various atypical cells, such as multinucleated cells, koilocytes, binucleated cells, parakeratotic cells, and giant cells, in the cervix. We previously showed the specificity of HPV genotypes for koilocytes and multinucleated cells. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the association among HPV genotypes and binucleated cells, parakeratotic cells, and giant cells in Papanicolaou (Pap) smears. We detected HPV genotypes and atypical cells in 651 cases of liquid-based cytology with an abnormal Pap smear. The HPV genotypes associated with atypical cells were evaluated using stepwise logistic regression with backward elimination and a likelihood ratio test for model construction. Polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the HPV genotypes in whole liquid-based cytology samples and microdissected cell samples from Pap smear slides. Binucleated cells were significantly associated with HPV genotype 42. Moreover, parakeratotic cells were significantly associated with certain HPV genotypes, such as HPV40. However, it was difficult to detect specific HPV genotypes by the manual microdissection-polymerase chain reaction method despite the presence of binucleated cells and parakeratotic cells. Thus, the presence of binucleated cells, parakeratotic cells, and giant cells in Pap smears may not be predictive of cervical lesions above low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions or infection with highly carcinogenic HPV genotypes. Background: Cervical cancer is the most frequent cause of death for women in developing countries. India, the second-most populous nation in the world, accounts for about 25% of cervical cancer deaths. Even in its premalignant stage, cervical cancer can be detected using a Papanicolaou (Pap) smear test. The goal was to study the role of Pap smear in detecting premalignant, malignant, and non-neoplastic lesions of the cervix and to ascertain the frequency of different lesions. Methods: All women who visited the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient department (OPD) at GMERS Medical College and Hospital, Navsari, India, in 1 year for different clinical problems were recruited. A total of 322 women who were sexually active and over 21 years of age were enrolled in the study. A Pap smear was used for all the women to screen for cervical cancer. The smear was obtained using an Ayre spatula and spread over a marked glass slide, which was placed in 95% ethyl alcohol and sent to the Department of Pathology for cytopathological examination. Women who had visible malignant cervical lesions were excluded. All the data were recorded in a predetermined form. Results: A total of 322 patients were screened. Out of 322, 261 smears were NILM (negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy) and 126 (39.1 %) smears had inflammatory changes; 2.2 % and 1.2% smears showed changes as ASCUS (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance) and ASC-H (atypical squamous cells cannot exclude high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions), respectively; 4.7 % and 5.3% smears showed LSIL (low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion) and HSIL (high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion). Squamous cell carcinoma was observed in only 2 (0.6%) of the smears. A total of 16 (4.9%) smears were unsatisfactory for evaluation because they lacked sufficient squamous components or were obscured by inflammation. Conclusion: The Pap smear test is a very easy, non-invasive, useful, simple, safe, and economical tool to detect preinvasive cervical epithelial lesions. It is evident and proven that every woman above the age of 30–35 years must be subjected to cervical screening, and this must be continued even in the postmenopausal period.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women and is largely preventable with regular screening using Papanicolau (Pap) tests. In Canada, all provinces have regular screening programs, although with slightly differing recommendations. Previous research has found that immigrant women, who are a large proportion of the Canadian population, are at higher risk of being under-screened, or non-adherent to the recommended screening frequency.Using data from the 2017 Canadian Community Health Survey, this study examined: (1) the extent to which immigration status and time since immigration are associated with Pap test adherence in Ontario, and (2) predictors of Pap test adherence for immigrants and Canadian born populations in Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, with a focus on the role of racial or ethnic identity among immigrants. Estimates of 3-year test adherence were 71.3 % (95 %CI: 66.9–75.7) among immigrant women and 75.4 % (95 %CI: 73.1–77.1) among non-immigrant women. Recent immigrants (6–10 years in Canada) had lower adherence (63.5 %, 95 %CI: 48.0–80.0). Logistic regression models found that immigrant women had lower adherence than Canadian-born women, controlling for age, household income, education, and having a primary care physician. Subgroup analysis found that South Asian immigrant women were least likely to be adherent.These results support targeted programming to increase screening adherence among recent immigrants and raise concerns regarding potential barriers to screening. Data that allow better disaggregation of racial and ethnic identities are important for better understanding the potential implications of these patterns for racial inequities in health.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most frequently occurring cancer in humans. In light of its vast prevalence, this disease causes a substantial burden on the quality of life of patients. Histopathologic examination is currently the gold standard for diagnostic confirmation and a requisite for therapeutic planning. Cytology possesses several advantages compared to biopsy. This is namely due to its minimal invasiveness, absence of scarring, improved aesthetic outcome, cost-effectiveness, and procedural simplicity. This review focused on contemporary evidence on basal cell carcinoma cytology to provide a comprehensive description of the technique with practical insights for specific clinical scenarios. The Pap smear's S was 78.9%, its E was 23.2%. The S of colposcopy was 93.3%, its E was 15.8%. The OR for Pap was 1.13 (95% CI [0.53 - 2.41]) and for colposcopy it was 2.62 (95% CI [0.90 - 8.64]). Conclusions: Colposcopy and Pap would present similar diagnostic accuracy as diagnostic tests for cervical intraepithelial lesions. To compare the frequency of abnormal cervical cytological results with and without representation of the transformation zone (TZ) in a medium-sized city in Brazil according to the Bethesda categorization. We performed an analytical observational study evaluating cytological results over 15 years from conventional smears collected within the Public Brazilian Health System in Araçatuba, Brazil. Tests were stratified by age and cytological result according to Brazilian guidelines and the Bethesda System. There were 261,881 examinations, 159,251 with and 102,630 without TZ representation. The global frequency of abnormal results was higher in smears with TZ representation (crude odds ratio [OR] 4.03; 95% confidence interval [CI] [3.71–4.38]). Considering only women between 25 and 64 years (the target of the national guidelines), there were higher results for high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (OR 11.54; 95% CI 6.74–19.78), low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (OR 2.82; 95% CI 2.17–3.67) atypical squamous cell in which high-grade intraepithelial lesion cannot be excluded (OR 6.90; 95% CI 4.91–9.66) and atypical squamous cell of undetermined significance (OR 3.53; 95% CI 3.11–4.01) among cases with TZ representation. Samples with TZ representation were associated with higher rates of abnormal results. To investigate the perception of transgender men of access and use of gynecological care in Primary Health Care services in SUS. A qualitative, descriptive study. A population of five participants, all transgender men, living in cities of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Data collection occurred via online interviews between late 2021 and early 2022. To analyze data, the Bardin technique was used. The lack of respect and preparation of health professionals in service were mentioned in all interviews. This hindered access of the LGBTQIAP+ population. Low demand from the transgender population for health services due to dread and fear of (re)experiencing traumatizing situations suggests that the Primary Health Care services professional must build knowledge and skills to welcome the transgender population in order to guarantee humanized services. Objectives: The Papanicolaou's (Pap's) stain is used for cervical cancer screening. It employs toxic-carcinogenic expensive reagents, which may not be easily accessible to many communities worldwide. The objective of this study was to validate the grape-based alcohol-extracted dye (Vinatela) on normal cervical samples for the Pap test. Material and Methods: Samples of the two grape species were collected from two vineyards through the Agroindustrial Research Institute of Universidad Privada San Juan Bautista. The dye extraction from the grape species and the dye performance to stain cells were conducted in three phases: (a) direct staining with prefermentation wine products, (b) direct fragmentation of grapes and direct staining with shells of the grapes, and (c) alcoholic extraction of the dye. Vinatela obtained from two species (Vitis vinifera "Tempranillo" and "Malbec") and posterior staining of cervical samples. We conducted a double-blind validation on 30 cervical samples. Results: The basophilic components of the cervical cells were stained. Alcoholic extraction staining protocol had a low yield. The nuclear and cytoplasmic borders, the nuclear details, and the polymorphonuclear nuclei were stained with Vinatela and could be differentiated during nuclear coloration. The initial staining protocol was 10-20 min x (mean ~12 min) staining time. We noted a slightly better staining with V. v. Tempranillo as compared to V. v. Malbec (P = 0.045). Nevertheless, it requires cytological changes for making diagnoses and reportedly has a high false-negative rate. In this study, the usefulness of the human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA chip test as a complementary method that can compensate for the defect of the Pap smear was investigated. Material and Methods: Of the 6516 patients who simultaneously underwent a Pap smear and an HPV DNA chip test at Chonnam National University Hospital between January 2015 and December 2016, 1897, an initial PAP smear-negative patients who had undergone an additional Pap smear during their 2-year follow-up period were selected for this study. Of the subject patients, 281 underwent a cervical biopsy. Results: The Pap smear follow-up of an initial Pap smear-negative subjects showed 53 (75.7%) HPV high-risk positive cases in the cytology low-grade lesion group (70 cases) and 46 (97.8%) HPV high-risk positive cases in the cytology high-grade lesion group (47 cases). The 281 biopsy cases included 67 biopsy low-grade lesion cases and 74 biopsy high-grade lesion cases, of which there were 45 (67.2%) and 67 (90.5%) HPV high-risk positive cases, respectively. The follow-up cytology on the high-risk HPV-positive subjects showed that the ratio of their high-grade lesions was 260.8 times greater than that of the high-risk HPV-negative subjects (OR = 260.8 and 95% CI: 36.1 and 1886.1); and their biopsy showed that the ratio of their high-grade lesions was 102.7 times greater than that of the HPV-negative subjects (OR = 102.7 and 95% CI: 14.0 and 753.3). Conclusion: The complementary use of the HPV DNA chip test may be useful in increasing the accuracy of screening examinations for the early diagnosis of uterine cervix cancer when combined with the Pap smear. Amidst the current health crisis and social distancing, telemedicine has become an important part of mainstream of healthcare, and building and deploying computational tools to support screening more efficiently is an increasing medical priority. The early identification of cervical cancer precursor lesions by Pap smear test can identify candidates for subsequent treatment. However, one of the main challenges is the accuracy of the conventional method, often subject to high rates of false negative. While machine learning has been highlighted to reduce the limitations of the test, the absence of high-quality curated datasets has prevented strategies development to improve cervical cancer screening. The Center for Recognition and Inspection of Cells (CRIC) platform enables the creation of CRIC Cervix collection, currently with 400 images (1,376 × 1,020 pixels) curated from conventional Pap smears, with manual classification of 11,534 cells. This collection has the potential to advance current efforts in training and testing machine learning algorithms for the automation of tasks as part of the cytopathological analysis in the routine work of laboratories.

To evaluate an academic institution's implementation of a gynecologic electronic consultation (eConsult) service, including the most common queries, turnaround time, need for conversion to in-person visits, and to demonstrate how eConsults can improve access and convenience for patients and providers. This is a descriptive and retrospective electronic chart review. We obtained data from the UCSF eConsult and Smart Referral program manager. The medical system provided institution-wide statistics. Three authors reviewed and categorized gynecologic eConsults for the last fiscal year. The senior author resolved conflicts in coding. The eConsult program manager provided billing information and provider reimbursement. A total of 548 eConsults were submitted to the gynecology service between July 2017 and June 2020 (4.5% of institutional eConsult volume). Ninety-five percent of the eConsults were completed by a senior specialist within our department. Abnormal pap smear management, abnormal uterine bleeding, and contraception questions were the most common queries. Over half (59.3%) of all inquiries were answered on the same day as they were received, with an average of 9% declined. Gynecology was the 10th largest eConsult provider at our institution in 2020. The present investigation describes one large university-based experience with eConsults in gynecology. Results demonstrate that eConsults permit appropriate, efficient triaging of time-sensitive conditions affecting patients especially in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. eConsult services provide the potential to improve access, interdisciplinary communication, and patient and provider satisfaction.

Vietnamese Americans have a higher rate of cervical and colorectal cancer (CRC) compared to other ethnicities. Increasing CRC screening, Pap testing, and HPV vaccination is critical to preventing disproportionate cancer burden among Vietnamese families. To describe the successes and challenges of implementing a novel intergenerational family group chat intervention that encourages CRC screening, Pap testing, and HPV vaccination. Young adult Family Health Advocates (FHAs) were trained to facilitate online family group chat conversations to encourage cancer screenings. Ten families participated in a 4-week intervention. Data collection included screenshot data of family group chat conversations, family member surveys, and post-intervention FHA interviews. Intervention implementation successes included (a) cultural and language brokering, (b) active co-facilitation by family members to follow up on cancer screenings, (c) high levels of family group chat engagement, (d) high acceptability of intervention among families, and (e) accessibility of intervention curriculum. FHA challenges to implement the intervention included (a) sustaining cancer prevention conversations, (b) comfort with navigating family conversations around cancer screening, (c) relevance for all family members, and (d) missed opportunities for correcting misinformation. Researcher challenges included family recruitment and retention. The intervention made cancer-screening messages more accessible and was well accepted by Vietnamese families. Scaling up the intervention will require (a) training FHAs to monitor family conversations and build confidence in sharing medical accurate messages, (b) segmenting group chats by age and gender, and (c) employing multiple family engagement strategies.

Abstract Background Although preventable through screening, cervical cancer incidence and mortality are higher among American Indian and Alaska Native women (AIAN) than White women. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's (ACA) Medicaid expansions may uniquely impact access and use of cervical cancer screening among AIAN women and ultimately alleviate this disparity. Methods Using Medicaid eligible AIAN (N = 4681) and White (N = 57,661) women aged 18–64 years from the 2010–2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we implemented difference‐in‐differences regression to estimate the association between the Medicaid expansions and guideline‐adherent cervical cancer screening and health care coverage. Results The Medicaid expansions were not associated with guideline‐adherent cervical cancer screening (AIAN: −1 percentage point [ppt] [95% confidence interval, CI: −4, 2 ppts]; White: 3 ppts [95% CI: −0, 6 ppts]), but were associated with a 2 ppt increase (95% CI: 0, 4 ppt) in having had a pap test in the last 5 years among White women. The Medicaid expansions were also associated with increases in having a health plan (AIAN: 5 ppts [95% CI: 1, 9]; White: 11 ppts [95% CI: 7, 15]) and decreases in avoiding medical care due to costs (AIAN: −8 ppts [95% CI: −13, −2]; White: −6 ppts [95% CI: −9, −4]). Conclusions While we observed improvements in health care coverage, we did not observe changes to guideline‐adherent cervical cancer screening following the ACA's Medicaid expansions. Given the disproportionate burden of cervical cancer among AIAN women, identifying ways to improve cervical cancer screening uptake and delivery should be prioritized to reduce preventable deaths.

IntroductionGastric-type endocervical adenocarcinoma (GAS) is an uncommon type of endocervical adenocarcinoma that is not associated with human papillomavirus infection. This diagnosis is relatively rare and may portend a worse prognosis than usual-type endocervical adenocarcinoma. Subtle morphological features make it an under-recognised diagnostic challenge. Study of the cytological features of individual cases is valuable in order to increase awareness of this entity.MethodsThe pathology database of our institution was searched for the diagnosis of GAS and all cytological and surgical specimens for each patient were reviewed. The original cytological interpretation was compared to a retrospective central review interpretation. Clinical history and follow-up results were obtained from the electronic medical record.ResultsFour cases of GAS were identified. The findings on initial cervical cytology varied, with GAS found in both patients with negative cervical cytology and those with atypical glandular cells. Cytological findings included endocervical cells arranged in three-dimensional clusters and honeycomb sheets with abundant vacuolar cytoplasm, and in two patients, moderate nuclear atypia with irregular nuclear membranes, coarse chromatin, hyperchromatic nuclei, and prominent nucleoli. In one patient, GAS was incidentally discovered via thorough sampling of a cystic lesion in the superior portion of the endocervical canal.ConclusionsGAS is an aggressive human papillomavirus-independent type of endocervical adenocarcinoma with subtle morphological features and, as our study shows, varying clinical presentation. Given the aggressive nature of GAS and the difficulties in initial diagnosis, increased awareness of this entity among pathologists is crucial.

Background: Cervical cancer (CC) screening is a public health concern, and social conditions partially explain the individual’s ability to respond to the preventive aspect of the disease. This study aims to design an explanatory model of self-efficacy (SE) for CC screening. Methods: This study was conducted on 969 women aged 25–64 years who used the public health care system in Santiago, Chile. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to generate the explanatory model for global SE index and for each of their components as function of sociodemographic factors, factors related to interaction with the health system, risk factors for CC, family functioning, and the knowledge and beliefs of women regarding the disease and its prevention. Results: The factors that explain high levels of SE are low levels of education and knowledge of the risk factors of CC, better beliefs about the barriers to and benefits of a Papanicolaou (Pap) test, participation in breast cancer screening, and highly functional family Apgar. Conclusions: To administer as many CC screening as possible, achieve effective interventions, and reach optimal coverage rates, it is necessary to consider social determinants, collaborate with other cancer screening programs, and work toward the beliefs of the population.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to identify, map and describe characteristics of educational interventions for cervical cancer prevention in adult women. Methods: a scoping review conducted on eleven databases and the gray literature, including studies that described educational interventions aimed at preventing cervical cancer in adult women. Results: thirty-three articles with 151,457 participants were analyzed. The most used educational strategies were participatory discussions and educational leaflets. Most of the interventions took place in a single session, ranging from 40 to 60 minutes. The most used theoretical model in interventions to improve women’s compliance with Pap smear was the Health Belief Model. Conclusions: group discussions, lectures and educational brochures can increase knowledge and reduce barriers to cervical cancer prevention. Theory-based and culturally sensitive interventions can have a positive impact on women’s health.

Introduction Preventive screening for cervical cancer is the best available strategy to reduce the incidence and mortality from this neoplasm. However, the low proportion of women who undergo routine screening is a pending concern for healthcare systems worldwide. Objective To estimate the prevalence and factors associated with preventive cervical cancer screening in a Peruvian region. Methods Cross-sectional, multicenter study. It enrolled 1146 women users of healthcare centers in a Peruvian sanitary region. The dependent variable was the performance of cervical cancer preventive screening with Papanicolaou or visual inspection with acetic acid in the last two years. The independent variables were sociodemographic and socio-sanitary factors, knowledge about cervical cancer and human papillomavirus, attitudes and information towards screening tests. To evaluate the association between the variables, crude and adjusted prevalence ratios were calculated with generalized linear models of Poisson. Results The overall prevalence of preventive screening was 50.5%. This was associated with being tested, having a higher education level and urban area of residence, using contraceptive methods, having health insurance, being recommended by healthcare personnel to be screened, and being concerned about developing cervical cancer. It was also associated with responding that this cancer is preventable, being aware of cervical cancer or human papillomavirus, and believing it can cause cervical cancer. In contrast, considering preventive screening risky was associated with not having the test. Conclusions The proportion of women with preventive cervical cancer screening is low. In addition, certain associated modifiable factors were identified, which could improve preventive screening behaviors and rates.

Cervical cancer is a worldwide health issue. Each year, it kills hundreds of thousands of women worldwide. Despite the availability of screening tests, the incidence of cervical cancer remains high in low and middle-income countries. In this review, we survey the current literature on factors affecting cervical cancer screening uptake among women in low and middle-income countries. It also highlights potential strategies for improving screening uptake and suggests directions for future research. Knowledge about cervical cancer and its screening, socio-demographic factors, personal and behavioural factors, cultural factors and beliefs, and health service factors are considered the main barriers and facilitators to cervical cancer screening uptake among women in low and middle-income countries. Understanding the facilitators and barriers to cervical cancer screening encountered by women in low and middle-income countries can improve screening uptake by overcoming inequalities in resource and information access. Culturally sensitive screening programs, improvement of the health system, and health education interventions to raise awareness of screening and its benefits can be effective strategies to improve screening uptake among women in low and middle-income countries. Objective: To determine the relationship between absence of endocervical cells and false negative Pap smears in patients with squamous premalignant cervix lesions. Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out at Servicio de Anatomía Patológica del Hospital General de Huacho. A search for positive cervix biopsies for squamous intraepithelial lesions and their Pap smears from 2016 to 2018 was done. Negative Pap smears with absence of endocervical cells were investigated. Results: 23 out of 158 cytology results showed absence of endocervical cells, only two (8.7%) were reported negative. Eleven cytologies were negative (7%). Conclusions: No relationship was found between absence of endocervical cells and false negative results at Pap smears. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate human papillomavirus DNA positivity in cervical samples taken from sexually active female patients; Determination of human papillomavirus genotypes and comparison with Papanicolaou smear and colposcopic biopsy results. Methods: In this study sexually active female patients aged 18 years and over who applied to the obstetrics and gynecology clinic of a tertiary hospital between November 2020 and October 2021 were included. In vitro real-time HPV PCR method was used for the qualitative detection of human papillomavirus DNA from cervical specimens. Cervical specimens, which were sent to the pathology laboratory and stained according to Papanicolaou cytology protocol, and colposcopic biopsy specimens stained with hematoxylin-eosin were evaluated by an experienced pathologist. Results: One of the human papillomavirus genotypes 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, 67 and 68 was isolated in 19 (4.9%) of 383 female patients included in the study. human papillomavirus 16 was detected in five (26.3%) patients, human papillomavirus 18 was detected in one (5.2%) patient, and one of 13 other high-risk types was detected in the remaining 13 (68.4%) patients. The mean age of women with low-risk human papillomavirus genotype was 43.41±9.90 years, and the mean age of women with human papillomavirus high-risk genotype was 41.79±8.70 years. According to the Bethesda 14 classification, normal cytology was detected in 354 patients, ASC-US in 19 (5%), ASC-H in two (0.5%), LSIL in two (0.5%), HSIL in two (0.5%), AGC in 3 (0.8%) and one patient (0.3%) had adenocarcinoma in situ. While AGC was detected in 1 (20%) of 5 patients with human papillomavirus genotype 16, ASC-H was detected in 1 (20%) patient, 3 (60%) patients were evaluated as normal. No pathology was found in the cytology examination of the patient with human papillomavirus genotype 18. In the cytological examination of other high-risk human papillomavirus genotypes isolated from 13 patients; ASCUS results were obtained in 3 (23%) patients, HSIL in 1 (7.6%) and normal results in 9 (69.2%) patients. In the biopsy examination of patients with normal cytology findings and HPV 16 positive; CIN 1 and CIN 2 were detected in one patient, CIN 3 in one HPV 18 positive patient, and squamous cell carcinoma in one of the other HR-HPV patients. Conclusion: In cancer screening and patient follow-up, cytological evaluations should be evaluated together with molecular studies. The COVID-19 pandemic posed a setback to health maintenance screenings worldwide. These delays have impacted minorities and those of low socioeconomic status in the same way that disparities in cancer screenings have historically trended. Here, we evaluated the performance of a student-run free clinic in maintaining women up-to-date with cancer screenings before, during, and after the pandemic in relation to national trends. We identified all women eligible for screening mammography and cervical cancer screenings between 2018 and 2022 at the clinic (N = 185). Adequate adherence to screening was defined according to the American Cancer Society (ACS) recommendations for breast mammography, and the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) guidelines for cervical cancer screenings. For cervical cancer screening, 166 female patients seen between 2018 and 2022 were eligible, and up-to-date proportions were as follows: 81.3% in 2018; 90.9% in 2019; 83.3% in 2020; 93.3% in 2021; 93.8% in 2022. For breast surveillance, 143 women were eligible for screening mammography, and up-to-date proportions were as follows: 66.7% in 2018; 62.5% in 2019; 91.7% in 2020; 73.1% in 2021; 84.1% in 2022. These proportions were higher than or near national averages. In conclusion, adherence remained steady during the pandemic and was not subject to the declines seen nationally. Our clinic represents an effective model for promoting women's health maintenance and tempering the disparities seen among women of low socioeconomic status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
