Search

Variability studies offer a compelling glimpse into black hole dynamics, and NICER's (Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer) remarkable temporal resolution propels us even further. NICER observations of an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN), NGC 4051, have charted the geometry of the emission region of the central supermassive black hole. Our investigation of X-ray variability in NGC 4051 has detected extreme variations spanning a factor of 40 to 50 over a mere 10 to 12 hours. For the first time, we have constrained the X-ray Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the source to 0.1 Hz, corresponding to a temporal frequency of 10,000 Hz in a galactic X-ray binary (GXRB) with a mass of 10 M_{\odot}. No extra high-frequency break/bend or any quasi-periodic oscillations are found. Through detailed analysis of energy-dependent PSDs, we found that the PSD normalization, the high-frequency PSD slope as well as the bending frequency remains consistent across all energies within the 0.3-3 keV band, revealing the presence of a constant temperature corona. Context: Extensive, multi-wavelength monitoring campaigns of nearby and higher redshift active galactic nuclei (AGN) have shown that the UV/optical variations are well correlated with time delays which increase with increasing wavelength. Such behaviour is expected in the context of the X-ray thermal reverberation of the accretion disc in AGN. Aims: Our main objective is to use time-lag measurements of luminous AGN and fit them with sophisticated X-ray reverberation time-lags models. In this way we can investigate whether X-ray reverberation can indeed explain the observed continuum time lags, and whether time-lag measurements can be used to measure physical parameters such as the X-ray corona height and the spin of the black hole (BH) in these systems. Methods: We use archival time-lag measurements for quasars from different surveys, and we compute their rest frame, mean time-lags spectrum. We fit the data with analytical X-ray reverberation models, using $\chi^2$ statistics, and fitting for both maximal and non spinning BHs, for various colour correction values and X-ray corona heights. Results: We found that X-ray reverberation can explain very well the observed time lags, assuming the measured BH mass, accretion rate and X-ray luminosity of the quasars in the sample. The model agrees well with the data both for non-rotating and maximally rotating BHs, as long as the corona height is larger than $\sim 40$ gravitational radii. This is in agreement with previous results which showed that X-ray reverberation can also explain the disc radius in micro-lensed quasars, for the same corona heights. The corona height we measure depends on the model assumption of a perfectly flat disc. More realistic disc models may result in lower heights for the X-ray corona., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are known to be variable across all wavelengths. Significant observational efforts have been invested in the last decade in studying their ultraviolet (UV) and optical variability. Long and densely sampled, multi-wavelength monitoring campaigns of numerous Seyfert galaxies have been conducted with the aim of determining the X-ray/UV/optical continuum time lags. Time-lag studies can be used to constrain theoretical models. The observed time lags can be explained by thermal reprocessing of the X-rays illuminating the accretion disc (known as the X-ray reverberation model). However, the observed light curves contain more information that can be used to further constrain physical models. Our primary objective is to investigate whether, in addition to time lags, the X-ray reverberation model can also explain the UV/optical variability amplitude of nearby Seyferts. To do this, we measured the excess variance of four sources (namely Mrk 509, NGC 4151, NGC 2617, and Mrk 142) as a function of wavelength using data from archival long, multi-wavelength campaigns with Swift, and ground-based telescopes. We also computed the model excess variance in the case of the X-ray reverberation model by determining the disc's transfer function and assuming a bending power law for the X-ray power spectrum. We tested the validity of the model by comparing the measured and model variances for a range of accretion rates and X-ray source heights. We conclude that the X-ray thermal reverberation model can fit both the continuum, UV/optical time lags, as well as the variance in these AGNs, for the same physical parameters. Our results suggest that the accretion disc is constant and that all the observed UV/optical variations, on timescales of days and up to a few weeks, can be fully explained by the variable X-rays as they illuminate the accretion disc., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present a multi-wavelength spectral study of NGC 4151 based on five epochs of simultaneous AstroSat observations in the near ultra-violet (NUV) to hard X-ray band ($\sim 0.005-80$ keV) during $2017 - 2018$. We derived the intrinsic accretion disk continuum after correcting for internal and Galactic extinction, contributions from broad and narrow line regions, and emission from the host galaxy. We found a bluer continuum at brighter UV flux possibly due to variations in the accretion disk continuum or the UV reddening. We estimated the intrinsic reddening, $E(B-V) \sim 0.4$, using high-resolution HST/STIS spectrum acquired in March 2000. We used thermal Comptonization, neutral and ionized absorption, and X-ray reflection to model the X-ray spectra. We obtained the X-ray absorbing neutral column varying between $N_H \sim 1.2-3.4 \times 10^{23} cm^{-2}$, which are $\sim 100$ times larger than that estimated from UV extinction, assuming the Galactic dust-to-gas ratio. To reconcile this discrepancy, we propose two plausible configurations of the obscurer: (a) a two-zone obscurer consisting of dust-free and dusty regions, divided by the sublimation radius, or (b) a two-phase obscurer consisting of clumpy, dense clouds embedded in a low-density medium, resulting in a scenario where a few dense clouds obscure the compact X-ray source substantially, while the bulk of UV emission arising from the extended accretion disk passes through the low-density medium. Furthermore, we find a positive correlation between X-ray absorption column and $NUV-FUV$ color and UV flux, indicative of enhanced winds possibly driven by the 'bluer-when-brighter' UV continuum., Comment: 21 pages, 22 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Recently, nearby active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been subject to long X-rays/UV/optical monitoring campaigns. These campaigns reveal a strong correlation between the various UV and optical bands, with time lags increasing with wavelength. In a series of papers, we demonstrated that a scenario in which a central X-ray source illuminates the accretion disc explains the observed correlations. However, some of the monitored AGN show low/moderate X-rays-UV correlations, which could challenge this scenario. In this paper, we study the broadband X-ray/UV/optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of NGC 5548, one of the most intensively monitored AGN. We aim to test if the X-ray illumination model explains the broadband spectral behaviour of the source, despite the moderate X-ray-UV/optical correlation. We model the broadband time-averaged SED, from the STORM monitoring campaign of the source, using the KYNSED model which assumes an X-ray illuminated disc. We assume that the accretion process powers the X-ray corona. We also model 15 time-resolved SEDs from the same campaign to check whether this scenario can account for the observed spectral variability. The proposed model describes well the time-averaged and the time-resolved SEDs of NGC 5548. In this scenario, the corona height, the X-ray photon index, and the power transferred to the corona all vary. This explains the variability behaviour at different wavelengths. The best-fit model is obtained for a non-rotating black hole accreting at a constant rate of 5% its Eddington limit. Since each of the variable parameters affects the observed flux in a particular way, the combined variability of all parameters explains the moderate X-ray-UV/optical correlation. The X-ray illuminated disc model provides a complete description of the behaviour of NGC 5548, explaining its broadband SEDs, time-lag spectrum, and its power spectral distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We study the X-ray power spectrum of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) to investigate whether Seyfert I and II power spectra are similar or not, whether the AGN variability depends on black hole mass and accretion rate, and to compare the AGN power spectra with the Galactic X-ray black hole binaries power-spectra. We used 14-195 keV band light curves from the 157th SWIFT/BAT hard X-ray survey and we computed the mean power spectrum and excess variance of AGN in narrow black-hole mass/luminosity bins. We fitted a power-law model to the AGN power spectra, and we investigated whether the power spectrum parameters and the excess variance depend on black hole mass, luminosity and accretion rate. The Seyfert I and Seyfert II power spectra are identical, in agreement with AGN unification models. The mean AGN X-ray power spectrum has the same, power-law like shape with a slope of -1 in all AGN, irrespective of their luminosity and BH mass. We do not detect any flattening to a slope of zero at frequencies as low as 10e-9 Hz. We detect an anti-correlation between the PSD amplitude and the accretion rate, similar to what has been seen in the past in the 2-10 keV band. This implies that the variability amplitude in AGN decreases with increasing accretion rate. The universal AGN power-spectrum is consistent with the mean, 2-9 keV band Cyg X-1 power spectrum in its soft state. The mean, low frequency AGN X-ray power spectrum is consistent with the extension of the mean, 0.01-25 Hz Cyg X-1 power spectrum to lower frequencies. The agreement between the AGN and the Cyg X-1 power spectrum (either in the soft or the hard state) over many decades in frequency indicates that the X-ray variability process is probably the same in all accreting objects, irrespective of the mass of the compact object. The black hole mass MBH is crucial in constraining the growth of supermassive BHs within their host galaxies. Since direct measurements of MBH with dynamical methods are restricted to a limited number of nearly quiescent nearby galaxies and a small minority of active galactic nuclei (AGN), we must rely on indirect methods. In this work, we utilize an unbiased, volume-limited, hard X-ray selected sample of AGN to compare the reliability of some commonly used indirect methods, emphasising those that can be applied to obscured AGN. Based on a subsample of AGN with MBH determined via dynamical methods, our study suggests that X-ray based techniques, such as the scaling method and the one based on the variability measured through the excess variance, are in good agreement with the dynamical methods. On the other hand, the M-sigma correlation based on inactive galaxies tends to systematically overestimate MBH, regardless of the level of obscuration. We provide a correcting factor that produces an acceptable agreement with dynamical values and can be used to quickly correct the MBH computed with this method. We also derive an alternative M-sigma correlation based on this unbiased sample of AGN with a slope considerably shallower than the ones obtained using inactive galaxies, suggesting that the latter correlation may not be appropriate to compute the MBH in AGN. Finally, we find that no quick fix can be applied to correct the MBH obtained from the fundamental plane of black hole activity, casting doubts on the reliability of this method., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the connection between the variations in the far ultra-violet (FUV), near ultra-violet (NUV) and X-ray band emission from NGC 4051 using 4-days long AstroSat observations performed during 5-9 June 2016. NGC 4051 showed rapid variability in all three bands with the strongest variability amplitude in the X-ray band ($F_{var} \sim 37\%$) and much weaker variability in the UV bands ($F_{var} \sim 3 - 5\%$). Cross-correlation analysis performed using Interpolated cross-correlation Functions (ICCF) and Discrete cross-correlation Functions (DCF) revealed a robust correlation ($\sim 0.75$) between the UV and X-ray light curves. The variations in the X-ray band are found to lead those in the FUV and NUV bands by $\sim 7.4{\rm~ks}$ and $\sim 24.2{\rm~ks}$, respectively. The UV lags favour the thermal disc reprocessing model. The FUV and NUV bands are strongly correlated ($\sim 0.9$) and the variations in the FUV band lead those in the NUV band by $\sim 13{\rm~ks}$. Comparison of the UV lags found using the AstroSat observations with those reported earlier and the theoretical model for thermal reverberation time-lag suggests a possible change in either the geometry of the accretion disc/corona or the height of the corona., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we present an updated version of our model (KYNXiltr) which considers thermal reverberation of a standard Novikov-Thorne accretion disc illuminated by an X-ray point-like source. Previously, the model considered only two cases of black hole spins, and assumed a colour correction factor $f_{\rm col} = 2.4$. Now, we extend the model to any spin value and colour correction. In addition, we consider two scenarios of powering the X-ray corona, either via accretion, or external to the accretion disc. We use KYNXiltr to fit the observed time lags obtained from intense monitoring of four local Seyfert galaxies (NGC 5548, NGC 4395, Mrk 817, and Fairall 9). We consider various combinations of black hole spin, colour correction, corona height, and fraction of accretion power transferred to the corona. The model fits well the overall time-lags spectrum in these sources (for a large parameter space). For NGC 4593 only, we detect a significant excess of delays in the U-band. The contribution of the diffuse BLR emission in the time-lags spectrum of this source is significant. It is possible to reduce the large best-fitting parameter space by combining the results with additional information, such as the observed Eddington ratio and average X-ray luminosity. We also provide an update to the analytic expression provided by Kammoun et al., for an X-ray source that is not powered by the accretion process, which can be used for any value of colour correction, and for two values of the black hole spin (0 and 0.998)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Optical polarimeters are typically calibrated using measurements of stars with known and stable polarization parameters. However, there is a lack of such stars available across the sky. Many of the currently available standards are not suitable for medium and large telescopes due to their high brightness. Moreover, as we find, some of the used polarimetric standards are in fact variable or have polarization parameters that differ from their cataloged values. Our goal is to establish a sample of stable standards suitable for calibrating linear optical polarimeters with an accuracy down to $10^{-3}$ in fractional polarization. For five years, we have been running a monitoring campaign of a sample of standard candidates comprised of 107 stars distributed across the northern sky. We analyzed the variability of the linear polarization of these stars, taking into account the non-Gaussian nature of fractional polarization measurements. For a subsample of nine stars, we also performed multiband polarization measurements. We created a new catalog of 65 stars (see Table 2) that are stable, have small uncertainties of measured polarimetric parameters, and can be used as calibrators of polarimeters at medium- and large-size telescopes.

$\require{mediawiki-texvc}$ We study accretion disk emission from eight Seyfert $1 - 1.5$ active galactic nuclei (AGN) using far ultra-violet ($1300-1800$ ${\AA}$) slit-less grating spectra acquired with AstroSat/UVIT. We correct for the Galactic and intrinsic extinction, contamination from the host galaxies, narrow and broad-line regions, Fe II emission and Balmer continuum, and derive the intrinsic continua. We use HST COS/FOS spectra to account for the emission/absorption lines in the low-resolution UVIT spectra. We find generally redder power-law ($f_\nu \propto \nu^{\alpha}$) slopes ($\alpha \sim -1.1 - 0.3$) in the far UV band than predicted by the standard accretion disk model in the optical/UV band. We fit accretion disk models such as the multi-temperature disk blackbody ($\texttt{DISKBB}$) and relativistic disk ($\texttt{ZKERRBB}$, $\texttt{OPTXAGNF}$) models to the observed intrinsic continuum emission. We measure the inner disk temperatures using the $\texttt{DISKBB}$ model for seven AGN. These temperatures in the range $\sim 3.6-5.8$ eV are lower than the peak temperatures predicted for standard disks around maximally spinning super-massive black holes accreting at Eddington rates. The inner disks in two AGN, NGC 7469 and Mrk 352, appear to be truncated at $\sim 35-125r_{g}$ and $50-135r_{g}$, respectively. While our results show that the intrinsic FUV emission from the AGN are consistent with the standard disks, it is possible that UV continua may be affected by the presence of soft X-ray excess emission, X-ray reprocessing, and thermal Comptonisation in the hot corona. We study accretion disk-corona connection in Seyfert 1 galaxies using simultaneous UV/X-ray observations of NGC 4593 (July 14-18, 2016) and NGC 7469 (October 15-19, 2017) performed with AstroSat. We use the X-ray (0.5-7.0 keV) data acquired with the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) and the UV (FUV: 130-180 nm, NUV: 200-300 nm) data obtained with the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT). We also use the contemporaneous Swift observations of NGC 4593 and demonstrate AstroSat's capability for X-ray/UV correlation studies. We performed UV/X-ray cross-correlation analysis using the Interpolated and the Discrete Cross-Correlation Functions and found similar results. In the case of NGC 4593, we found that the variations in the X-rays lead to those in the FUV and NUV bands by ~ 38 ks and ~ 44 ks, respectively. These UV lags favour the disk reprocessing model, they are consistent with the previous results within uncertainties. In contrast, we found an opposite trend in NGC 7469 where the soft X-ray variations lag those in the FUV and NUV bands by ~ 41 ks and ~ 49 ks, respectively. The hard lags in NGC 7469 favour the Thermal Comptonization model. Our results may provide direct observational evidence for the variable intrinsic UV emission from the accretion disk which acts as the seed for thermal Comptonization in a hot corona in a lamp-post like geometry. The non-detection of disk reverberation photons in NGC 7469, using AstroSat data, is most likely due to a high accretion rate resulting in a hot accretion disk and large intrinsic emission., Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We study the ensemble X-ray variability properties of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) over a large range of timescales (20 ks $\leq T\leq$ 14 yrs), redshift ($0\leq z \lesssim 3$), luminosities ($10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}\leq L_X\leq 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and black hole (BH) masses ($10^6 \leq $M$_\odot \leq 10^9$). We propose the use of the variance-frequency diagram, as a viable alternative to the study of the power spectral density (PSD), which is not yet accessible for distant, faint and/or sparsely sampled AGN. We show that the data collected from archival observations and previous literature studies are fully consistent with a universal PSD form which does not show any evidence for systematic evolution of shape or amplitude with redshift or luminosity, even if there may be differences between individual AGN at a given redshift or luminosity. We find new evidence that the PSD bend frequency depends on BH mass and, possibly, on accretion rate. We study the Fourier time-lags due to the Comptonization of disc-emitted photons in a spherical, uniform, and stationary X-ray corona, which located on the rotational axis of the black hole. We use Monk, a general relativistic Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code, to calculate Compton scattering of photons emitted by a thin disc with a Novikov-Thorne temperature profile. We find that the model time-lags due to Comptonization remain constant up to a characteristic frequency and then rapidly decrease to zero at higher frequencies. We provide equations which can be used to determine the time-lags and cross spectra for a wide range of values for the corona radius, temperature, optical depth, height, and for various accretion rates and black hole masses. We also provide an equation for the X-ray luminosity of a single corona, as a function of the its characteristics and location above the disc. Remarkably, the observed X-ray time-lags of nearby, bright active galaxies can be successfully reproduced by inverse Comptonization process of multiple dynamic coronae., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Our objective is to critically assess the X-ray flux variability as a tool for measuring the black hole (BH) mass in active galactic nuclei (AGN). We aim to establish a prescription for estimating BH masses based on measurements of the normalised excess variance from X-ray data. We discuss the minimum requirements in terms of the light-curve duration and X-ray signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) to enable a reliable determination that is comparable to what can be derived from the continuum and emission line reverberation studies. We used the light curves of local Seyfert from the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array hard X-ray mission (NuSTAR), to compute the normalised excess variance (NXV) in the 3-10 and 10-20 keV bands, thus extending the analysis to an energy band higher than 10 keV. The excess variance measurements were then combined with independent BH mass estimates from the literature to establish the MBH versus NXV relation for different samples and weigh its accuracy in terms of the light-curve duration and X-ray S/N. We find that it is possible to accurately measure the BH mass in AGN using excess variance measurements in the 3-10 and the 10-20 keV bands, however, strong quality requirements should be applied. The minimum necessary S/N and duration of the light curves used to compute the excess variance ought to be 3 and approximately 100 ks, respectively. We provide a linear relationship between the normalised excess variance and the black hole mass that can be used to estimate the latter, with an average uncertainty of the order of 0.4 to 0.25 dex (depending on the adopted light-curve segment duration)., Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures

We study the half-light radius versus black hole mass as well as the luminosity versus black hole mass relations in active galactic nuclei (AGN) when the disc is illuminated by the X-ray corona. We used KYNSED, a recently developed spectral model for studying broadband spectral energy distribution in AGN. We considered non-illuminated Novikov-Thorne discs and X-ray illuminated discs based on a Novikov-Thorne temperature radial profile. We also considered the case where the temperature profile is modified by a colour-correction factor. We assumed that the X-ray luminosity is equal to the accretion power that is dissipated to the disc below a transition radius. The half-light radius of X-ray illuminated radii can be up to some three to four times greater than the radius of a standard disc, even for a non-spinning black hole, due to the fact that the absorbed X-rays act as a secondary source of energy, increasing the disc temperature. Non-illuminated discs are consistent with observations, but only at the 2.5sigma level. On the other hand, X-ray illuminated discs can explain both the half-light radius-black hole mass as well as the luminosity-black hole mass relation in AGN, for a wide range of physical parameters. In addition, we show that the observed X-ray luminosity of the gravitationally lensed quasars is fully consistent with the X-ray luminosity that is necessary for heating the disc. X-ray disc illumination was proposed many years ago to explain various features that are commonly observed in the X-ray spectra of AGN. Recently, we showed that X-ray illumination of accretion disc can also explain the observed UV/optical time-lags in AGN, while in this work, we show that the same model can also account for the quasar micro-lensing disc size problem. We develop a new physical model for the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) of X-ray illuminated accretion discs, that takes into account the mutual interaction of the accretion disc and the X-ray corona, including all relativistic effects. We assume a Keplerian, optically thick and geometrically thin accretion disc and an X-ray source in the lamp-post geometry that emits an isotropic power-law spectrum with a high-energy cut-off. We assume that all the energy that would be released by thermal radiation in the standard disc model in its innermost part, is transported to the corona, effectively cooling the disc in this region. We include the disc heating due to thermalisation of the absorbed part of the disc illumination by X-ray corona. The X-ray reflection from the disc is also included. We compute the X-ray luminosity and the low-energy X-ray cut-off through an iterative process, taking full account of the interplay between the X-ray illumination of the disc and the resulting accretion disc spectrum which enters the corona so that the energy balance is preserved. The corona radius is also computed from the conservation of the photon's number during Comptonization. We discuss the model SEDs and their dependence on system parameters. The disc-corona interaction has profound effects - it constrains the X-ray luminosity and changes the shape and normalisation of the UV/optical blue bump. We use the new code to fit the broad-band SED of a typical Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 5548. We infer a high black-hole spin, an intermediate system inclination, and an accretion rate below 10% of Eddington. The X-ray luminosity in this source could be supported by 45-70% of the accretion energy dissipated in the disc. An empirical model is presented that links, for the first time, the demographics of AGN to their ensemble X-ray variability properties. Observations on the incidence of AGN in galaxies are combined with (i) models of the Power Spectrum Density (PSD) of the flux variations of AGN and (ii) parameterisations of the black-hole mass vs stellar-mass scaling relation, to predict the mean excess variance of active black-hole populations in cosmological volumes. We show that the comparison of the model with observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance as a function of X-ray luminosity provides a handle on both the PSD models and the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation. We find strong evidence against a PSD model that is described by a broken power-law and a constant overall normalisation. Instead our analysis indicates that the amplitude of the PSD depends on the physical properties of the accretion events, such as the Eddington ratio and/or the black hole mass. We also find that current observational measurements of the ensemble excess variance are consistent with the black-hole mass vs stellar mass relation of local spheroids based on dynamically determined black-hole masses. We present five simultaneous UV/X-ray observations of IC4329A by AstroSat, performed over {a five-month} period. We utilize the excellent spatial resolution of the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat to reliably separate the intrinsic AGN flux from the host galaxy emission and to correct for the Galactic and internal reddening, as well as the contribution from the narrow and broad-line regions. We detect large-amplitude UV variability, which is unusual for a large black hole mass AGN, like IC4329A, over such a small period. In fact, the fractional variability amplitude is larger in the UV band than in the X-ray band. This demonstrates that the observed UV variability is intrinsic to the disk, and is not due to X-ray illumination. The joint X-ray spectral analyses of five SXT and LAXPC spectral data reveal a soft-X-ray excess component, a narrow iron-line (with no indication of a significant Compton hump), and a steepening power-law ($\Delta\Gamma\sim 0.21$) with increasing X-ray flux. The soft excess component could arise due to thermal Comptonization of the inner disk photons in a warm corona with $kT_e\sim 0.26$ keV. The UV emission we detect acts as the primary seed photons for the hot corona, which produces the broadband X-ray continuum. The X-ray spectral variability is well described by the cooling of this corona from $kT_e\sim42$ keV to $\sim 32$ keV with increasing UV flux, while the optical depth remains constant at $\tau\sim 2.3$., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 18 pages, 9 figures, 4 Tables

We present a study of far and near-ultraviolet emission from the accretion disk in a powerful Seyfert 1 galaxy IC4329A using observations performed with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) onboard AstroSat. These data provide the highest spatial resolution and deepest images of IC4329A in the far and near UV bands acquired to date. The excellent spatial resolution of the UVIT data has allowed us to accurately separate the extended emission from the host galaxy and the AGN emission in the far and near UV bands. We derive the intrinsic AGN flux after correcting for the Galactic and internal reddening, as well as for the contribution of emission lines from the broad and narrow-line regions. The intrinsic UV continuum emission shows a marked deficit compared to that expected from the "standard" models of the accretion disk around an estimated black hole mass of 1-2x10^8Msun when the disk extends to the innermost stable circular orbit. We find that the intrinsic UV continuum is fully consistent with the standard disk models, but only if the disk emits from distances larger than 80-150 gravitational radii., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 pages, 5 figures

Thermal reverberation in accretion discs of active galactic nuclei is thought to be the reason of the continuum UV/optical time lags seen in these sources. Recently, we studied thermal reverberation of a standard Novikov-Thorne accretion disc illuminated by an X-ray point-like source, and we derived an analytic prescription for the time lags as function of wavelength. In this work, we use this analytic function to fit the time-lags spectra of seven Seyferts, that have been intensively monitored, in many wave-bands, in the last few years. We find that thermal reverberation can explain the observed UV/optical time lags in all these sources. Contrary to previous claims, the magnitude of the observed UV/optical time-lags is exactly as expected in the case of a standard accretion disc in the lamp-post geometry, given the black hole mass and the accretion rate estimates for the objects we study. We derive estimates of the disc accretion rates and corona height for a non-spinning and a maximally spinning black hole scenarios. We also find that the modelling of the continuum optical/UV time-lags can be used to estimate the black hole spin, when combined with additional information. We also find that the model under-predicts the observed X-ray to UV time-lags, but this difference is probably due to the broad X-ray auto-correlation function of these sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present uniformly reprocessed and re-calibrated data from the RoboPol programme of optopolarimetric monitoring of active galactic nuclei (AGN), covering observations between 2013, when the instrument was commissioned, and 2017. In total, the dataset presented in this paper includes 5068 observations of 222 AGN with Dec > -25 deg. We describe the current version of the RoboPol pipeline that was used to process and calibrate the entire dataset, and we make the data publicly available for use by the astronomical community. Average quantities summarising optopolarimetric behaviour (average degree of polarization, polarization variability index) are also provided for each source we have observed and for the time interval we have followed it., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Several active galactic nuclei show correlated variations in the ultraviolet/optical range, with time delays increasing at longer wavelengths. Thermal reprocessing of the X-rays illuminating the accretion disk has been proposed as a viable explanation. In this scenario, the variable X-ray flux irradiating the accretion disk is partially reflected in X-rays, and partially absorbed, thermalized and re-emitted with some delay by the accretion disk at longer wavelengths. We investigate this scenario assuming an X-ray point-like source illuminating a standard Novikov-Thorne accretion disk, around a rotating black hole. We consider all special and general relativistic effects to determine the incident X-ray flux on the disk and in propagating light from the source to the disk and to the observer. We also compute the disk reflection flux taking into consideration the disk ionization. We investigate the dependence of the disk response function and time lags on various physical parameters, such as black hole mass and spin, X-ray corona height, luminosity, and photon index, accretion rate, inclination, and inner/outer disk radii. We found it is important to consider relativistic effects and the disk ionization in estimating the disk response. We also found a strong non-linearity between the X-ray luminosity and the disk response. We present an analytic function for the time-lags dependence on wavelength, which can be used to fit observed time-lag spectra. We also estimate the fraction of the reverberation signal with respect to the total flux and we suggest possible explanation for the lack of X-ray-ultraviolet/optical correlated variations in a few sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present geometric and dynamical modeling of the broad line region for the multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign focused on NGC 5548 in 2014. The dataset includes photometric and spectroscopic monitoring in the optical and ultraviolet, covering the H$\beta$, C IV, and Ly$\alpha$ broad emission lines. We find an extended disk-like H$\beta$ BLR with a mixture of near-circular and outflowing gas trajectories, while the C IV and Ly$\alpha$ BLRs are much less extended and resemble shell-like structures. There is clear radial structure in the BLR, with C IV and Ly$\alpha$ emission arising at smaller radii than the H$\beta$ emission. Using the three lines, we make three independent black hole mass measurements, all of which are consistent. Combining these results gives a joint inference of $\log_{10}(M_{\rm BH}/M_\odot) = 7.64^{+0.21}_{-0.18}$. We examine the effect of using the $V$ band instead of the UV continuum light curve on the results and find a size difference that is consistent with the measured UV-optical time lag, but the other structural and kinematic parameters remain unchanged, suggesting that the $V$ band is a suitable proxy for the ionizing continuum when exploring the BLR structure and kinematics. Finally, we compare the H$\beta$ results to similar models of data obtained in 2008 when the AGN was at a lower luminosity state. We find that the size of the emitting region increased during this time period, but the geometry and black hole mass remain unchanged, which confirms that the BLR kinematics suitably gauge the gravitational field of the central black hole., Comment: 26 pages, 19 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the results from an X-ray variability study of IRAS 13224-3809. This is probably the best source for X-ray reverberation studies since it is X-ray bright, extremely variable, and it has been extensively observed with XMM-Newton. We used all the archival XMM-Newton data from the three EPIC cameras (to increase the signal-to-noise) and, given the many observations of the source, we were able to compute the time-lags spectra in three different flux levels/periods. We fitted the time-lags and energy spectra, simultaneously, using a new X-ray reverberation code which computes the time dependent reflection spectra of the disc as a response to an X-ray flash from a point source located on the axis of the black-hole (BH) accretion disc (lamp-post geometry). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time for an AGN that both time-lags and energy spectra are fitted by a model simultaneously in different flux periods. The model fits in the case when the BH is rapidly rotating are significantly better than the model fits in the case of a Schwarzschild BH. This result strongly favours the hypothesis of a rotating central BH in this source. We also detect significant variations in the height of the X-ray corona. The X-ray height appears to increase from 3-5 gravitational radii when the X-ray luminosity is of the order of 1.5-3 percent of the Eddington limit, up to 10 gravitational radii, when the luminosity doubles., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (18th Aug. 2020)

We report velocity-delay maps for prominent broad emission lines, Ly_alpha, CIV, HeII and H_beta, in the spectrum of NGC5548. The emission-line responses inhabit the interior of a virial envelope. The velocity-delay maps reveal stratified ionization structure. The HeII response inside 5-10 light-days has a broad single-peaked velocity profile. The Ly_alpha, CIV, and H_beta responses peak inside 10 light-days, extend outside 20 light-days, and exhibit a velocity profile with two peaks separated by 5000 km/s in the 10 to 20 light-day delay range. The velocity-delay maps show that the M-shaped lag vs velocity structure found in previous cross-correlation analysis is the signature of a Keplerian disk with a well-defined outer edge at R=20 light-days. The outer wings of the M arise from the virial envelope, and the U-shaped interior of the M is the lower half of an ellipse in the velocity-delay plane. The far-side response is weaker than that from the near side, so that we see clearly the lower half, but only faintly the upper half, of the velocity--delay ellipse. The delay tau=(R/c)(1-sin(i))=5 light-days at line center is from the near edge of the inclined ring, giving the inclination i=45 deg. A black hole mass of M=7x10^7 Msun is consistent with the velocity-delay structure. A barber-pole pattern with stripes moving from red to blue across the CIV and possibly Ly_alpha line profiles suggests the presence of azimuthal structure rotating around the far side of the broad-line region and may be the signature of precession or orbital motion of structures in the inner disk. Further HST observations of NGC 5548 over a multi-year timespan but with a cadence of perhaps 10 days rather than 1 day could help to clarify the nature of this new AGN phenomenon., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, ApJ in press

The UV/optical variations in many AGN are very well correlated, showing delays which increase with increasing wavelength. It is thought that this is due to thermal reprocessing of the X-ray emission by the accretion disk. In this scenario, the variable X-ray flux from the corona illuminates the accretion disk where it is partially reflected, and partially absorbed and thermalized in the disk producing a UV/optical reverberation signal. This will lead to a time lag increasing with wavelength. However, although the shape of the observed time-lags as a function of wavelength is consistent with the model predictions, their amplitude suggested a disk which is significantly hotter than expected. In this work, we estimate the response functions and the corresponding time lags assuming a standard Novikov-Thorne accretion disk illuminated by a point-like X-ray source. We take into account all relativistic effects in the light propagation from the X-ray source to the disk then to the observer. We also compute the disk reflection, accounting for its ionization profile. Our results show that thermal reverberation effects are stronger in sources with large X-ray source height and low accretion rate. We also found that the time lags increase with height and accretion rate. We apply our model to NGC 5548 and we show that the observed lags in this source can be explained by the model, for a source height of $\sim 60 ~\rm r_g$ and an accretion rate of a few percent of the Eddington limit for a maximally-spinning black hole., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We present the long term, frequency-dependent, X-ray time lags of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051. We used Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer light curves in the 2-4, 4-7 and 7-10 keV bands and we measured the time-lags at $10^{-7}-10^{-6}$ Hz. This is the lowest frequency range that AGN time-lags have ever been measured. The variations in the higher energy bands are delayed with respect to the variations we observe at 2-4 keV, in agreement with the time-lags at high frequencies. When we combine our results with those from the model fitting of the time lags at higher frequencies we find that that the X-ray hard lags in NGC 4051 follow a power law of slope $\sim -1$ over a broad frequency range, from $\sim 10^{-7}$ to $\sim 10^{-3}$ Hz. This is consistent with the time-lags of Cyg X-1, a result which further supports the analogy between active galaxies and Galactic X-ray black hole binaries., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the design and performance of RoboPol, a four-channel optical polarimeter operating at the Skinakas Observatory in Crete, Greece. RoboPol is capable of measuring both relative linear Stokes parameters $q$ and $u$ (and the total intensity $I$) in one sky exposure. Though primarily used to measure the polarization of point sources in the R-band, the instrument features additional filters (B, V and I), enabling multi-wavelength imaging polarimetry over a large field of view (13.6' $\times$ 13.6'). We demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the instrument throughout its five years of operation. Best performance is achieved within the central region of the field of view and in the R band. For such measurements the systematic uncertainty is below 0.1% in fractional linear polarization, $p$ (0.05% maximum likelihood). Throughout all observing seasons the instrumental polarization varies within 0.1% in $p$ and within 1$^\circ$ in polarization angle., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

X-ray reverberation in Active Galactic Nuclei, believed to be the result of the reprocessing of coronal photons by the underlying accretion disc, has allowed us to probe the properties of the inner-most regions of the accretion flow and the central black hole. Our current model (KYNREFREV) computes the time-dependent reflection spectra of the disc as a response to a flash of primary power-law radiation from a point source corona located on the axis of the black hole accretion disc (lamp-post geometry). Full relativistic effects are taken into account. The ionization of the disc is set for each radius according to the amount of the incident primary flux and the density of the accretion disc. We detect wavy residuals around the best-fit reverberation model time lags at high frequencies. This result suggests that the simple lamp-post geometry does not fully explain the X-ray source/disc configuration in Active Galactic Nuclei. There has been a noticeable progress into the development of codes for extended coronae (Wilkins+16, Chainakun & Young 2017, Taylor & Reynolds 2018a,b). Indeed, the model from Chainakun & Young (2017), consisting of two axial point sources illuminating an accretion disc that produce the reverberation lags is able to reproduce the observed time-lag versus frequency spectra. The goal of this paper is to observationally justify the need for an extended corona in order to provide (in the near future) with a mathematical formulation of a model for an extended corona in its simplest form., Comment: 9 pages. We study the flux-flux plots (FFPs) of the Seyfert galaxy SWIFT J2127.4+5654 which was observed simultaneously by XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. The 0.7-2 keV FFPs show a non-linear behaviour, while they are well fitted by a straight line, in the $\sim 2-40$ keV range. Without any additional modelling, this result strongly suggests that neither absorption nor spectral slope variations can contribute significantly to the observed variability above 2 keV (on time scales $\lesssim$5 days, at least). The FFP method is capable of separating the variable and the constant X-ray spectral components in this source. We found that the low-, average- and high-flux spectra of the variable components are consistent with a power law varying in normalisation only plus a relativistic reflection component varying simultaneously with the continuum. At low energies, we identify an additional variable component, consistent with a neutral absorber with a variable covering fraction. We also detect two spectral components whose fluxes remain constant over the duration of the observations. These components can be well described by a blackbody emission of $kT_{\rm BB}\sim 0.18\, \rm keV$, dominating at soft X-rays, and a reflection component from neutral material. The spectral model resulting from the FFP analysis can fit well the energy spectra of the source. We suggest that a combined study of FFPs and energy spectra in the case of X-ray bright and variable Seyferts can identify, unambiguously, the various spectral components, and can lift the degeneracy that is often observed within different models fitting equally well time-averaged spectra of these objects., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the first results obtained by the application of the KYNREFREV-reverberation model, which is ready for its use in XSPEC. This model computes the time dependent reflection spectra of the disc as a response to a flash of primary power-law radiation from a point source corona located on the axis of the black hole accretion disc (lamp-post geometry). Full relativistic effects are taken into account. The ionisation of the disc is set for each radius according to the amount of the incident primary flux and the density of the accretion disc. We tested the model by fitting model predictions to the observed time-lag spectra of three Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (ARK 564, MCG-6-30-15 and 1H 0707-495), assuming either a rapidly or zero spinning black hole (BH). The time-lags strongly suggest a compact X-ray source, located close to the BH, at a height of approx. 4 gravitational radii. This result does not depend either on the BH spin or the disc ionization. There is no significant statistical difference between the quality of the best-fits in the rapidly and zero spinning BH scenarios in Ark 564 and MCG-6-30-15. But there is an indication that the hypothesis of a non-rotating BH in 1H 0707-495 is not consistent with its time-lag spectrum. Finally, the best-fits to the Ark 564 and 1H 0707-495 data are of rather low quality. We detect wavy-residuals around the best-fit reverberation model time-lags at high frequencies. This result suggests that the simple lamp-post geometry does not fully explain the X-ray source/disc configuration in Active Galactic Nuclei., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS after minor revision (23/Jul./2018). 10 pages

We report the results of intensive X-ray, UV and optical monitoring of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 with Swift. There is no intrinsic flux-related spectral change in the the variable components in any band with small apparent variations due only to contamination by a second constant component, possibly a (hard) reflection component in the X-rays and the (red) host galaxy in the UV/optical bands. Relative to the shortest wavelength band, UVW2, the lags of the other UV and optical bands are mostly in agreement with the predictions of reprocessing of high energy emission from an accretion disc. The U-band lag is, however, far larger than expected, almost certainly because of reprocessed Balmer continuum emission from the more distant broad line region gas. The UVW2 band is well correlated with the X-rays but lags by ~6x more than expected if the UVW2 results from reprocessing of X-rays on the accretion disc. However, if the lightcurves are filtered to remove variations on timescales >5d, the lag approaches the expectation from disc reprocessing. MEMEcho analysis shows that direct X-rays can be the driver of most of the variations in the UV/optical bands as long as the response functions for those bands all have long tails (up to 10d) in addition to a strong peak (from disc reprocessing) at short lag (<1d). We interpret the tails as due to reprocessing from the surrounding gas. Comparison of X-ray to UVW2 and UVW2 to V-band lags for 4 AGN, including NGC 4593, shows that all have UVW2 to V-band lags which exceed the expectations from disc resprocessing by factor < 2. However the X-ray to UVW2 lags are, mostly, in greater excess from the expectations from disc reprocessing and differ between AGN. The largest excess is in NGC 4151. Black holes, anywhere in the stellar-mass to supermassive range, are often associated with relativistic jets. Models suggest that jet production may be a universal process common in all black hole systems regardless of their mass. Although in many cases observations support such hypotheses for microquasars and Seyfert galaxies, little is known on whether boosted blazar jets also comply with such universal scaling laws. We use uniquely rich multiwavelength radio light curves from the F-GAMMA program and the most accurate Doppler factors available to date to probe blazar jets in their emission rest frame with unprecedented accuracy. We identify for the first time a strong correlation between the blazar intrinsic broad-band radio luminosity and black hole mass, which extends over $\sim$ 9 orders of magnitude down to microquasars scales. Our results reveal the presence of a universal scaling law that bridges the observing and emission rest frames in beamed sources and allows us to effectively constrain jet models. They consequently provide an independent method for estimating the Doppler factor, and for predicting expected radio luminosities of boosted jets operating in systems of intermediate or tens-of-solar mass black holes, immediately applicable to cases as those recently observed by LIGO., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in APJ

We use results of our 3 year polarimetric monitoring program to investigate the previously suggested connection between rotations of the polarization plane in the optical emission of blazars and their gamma-ray flares in the GeV band. The homogeneous set of 40 rotation events in 24 sources detected by {\em RoboPol} is analysed together with the gamma-ray data provided by {\em Fermi}-LAT. We confirm that polarization plane rotations are indeed related to the closest gamma-ray flares in blazars and the time lags between these events are consistent with zero. Amplitudes of the rotations are anticorrelated with amplitudes of the gamma-ray flares. This is presumably caused by higher relativistic boosting (higher Doppler factors) in blazars that exhibit smaller amplitude polarization plane rotations. The flux-flux plot (FFP) method can provide model-independent clues regarding the X-ray variability of active galactic nuclei. To use it properly, the bin size of the light curves should be as short as possible, provided the average counts in the light curve bins are larger than $\sim 200$. We apply the FFP method to the 2013, simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of the Seyfert galaxy MCG$-$6-30-15, in the 0.3-40 keV range. The FFPs above $\sim 1.6$ keV are well-described by a straight line. This result rules out spectral slope variations and the hypothesis of absorption driven variability. Our results are fully consistent with a power-law component varying in normalization only, with a spectral slope of $\sim 2$, plus a variable, relativistic reflection arising from the inner accretion disc around a rotating black hole. We also detect spectral components which remain constant over $\sim 4.5$ days (at least). At energies above $\sim 1.5$ keV, the stable component is consistent with reflection from distant, neutral material. The constant component at low energies is consistent with a blackbody spectrum of $kT_{\rm BB} \sim 100$ eV. The fluxes of these components are $\sim 10-20\%$ of the average continuum flux (in the respective bands). They should always be included in the models that are used to fit the spectrum of the source. We study the relationship between the UV and X-ray variability of the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H~0707-495. Using a year long {\it Swift} monitoring and four long {\it XMM-Newton} observations, we perform cross-correlation analyses of the UV and X-ray light curves, on both long and short time scales. We also perform time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy on 1-2 ks scale, and study the relationship between the UV emission and the X-ray spectral components - soft X-ray excess and a power-law. We find that the UV and X-ray variations anti-correlate on short, and possibly on long time scales as well. Our results rule out reprocessing as the dominant mechanism for the UV variability, as well as the inward propagating fluctuations in the accretion rate. Absence of a positive correlation between the photon index and the UV flux suggests that the observed UV emission is unlikely to be the seed photons for the thermal Comptonisation. We find a strong correlation between the continuum flux and the soft-excess temperature which implies that the soft excess is most likely the reprocessed X-ray emission in the inner accretion disc. Strong X-ray heating of the innermost regions in the disc, due to gravitational light bending, appears to be an important effect in 1H~0707-495, giving rise to a significant fraction of the soft excess as reprocessed thermal emission. We study the X-ray variability properties of distant AGNs in the Chandra Deep Field-South region over 17 years, up to $z\sim 4$, and compare them with those predicted by models based on local samples. We use the results of Monte Carlo simulations to account for the biases introduced by the discontinuous sampling and the low-count regime. We confirm that variability is an ubiquitous property of AGNs, with no clear dependence on the density of the environment. The variability properties of high-z AGNs, over different temporal timescales, are most consistent with a Power Spectral Density (PSD) described by a broken (or bending) power-law, similar to nearby AGNs. We confirm the presence of an anti-correlation between luminosity and variability, resulting from the dependence of variability on BH mass and accretion rate. We explore different models, finding that our acceptable solutions predict that BH mass influences the value of the PSD break frequency, while the Eddington ratio $\lambda_{Edd}$ affects the PSD break frequency and, possibly, the PSD amplitude as well. We derive the evolution of the average $\lambda_{Edd}$ as a function of redshift, finding results in agreement with measurements based on different estimators. The large statistical uncertainties make our results consistent with a constant Eddington ratio, although one of our models suggest a possible increase of $\lambda_{Edd}$ with lookback time up to $z\sim 2-3$. We conclude that variability is a viable mean to trace the accretion history of supermassive BHs, whose usefulness will increase with future, wide-field/large effective area X-ray missions., Comment: 15 pages, 9 Figures, 2 Tables, in press on MNRAS

During the Space Telescope and Optical Reverberation Mapping Project (STORM) observations of NGC 5548, the continuum and emission-line variability became de-correlated during the second half of the 6-month long observing campaign. Here we present Swift and Chandra X-ray spectra of NGC 5548 obtained as a part of the campaign. The Swift spectra show that excess flux (relative to a power-law continuum) in the soft X-ray band appears before the start of the anomalous emission-line behavior, peaks during the period of the anomaly, and then declines. This is a model-independent result suggesting that the soft excess is related to the anomaly. We divide the Swift data into on- and off-anomaly spectra to characterize the soft excess via spectral fitting. The cause of the spectral differences is likely due to a change in the intrinsic spectrum rather than being due to variable obscuration or partial covering. The Chandra spectra have lower signal-to-noise ratios, but are consistent with Swift data. Our preferred model of the soft excess is emission from an optically thick, warm Comptonizing corona, the effective optical depth of which increases during the anomaly. This model simultaneously explains all the three observations: the UV emission line flux decrease, the soft-excess increase, and the emission line anomaly., Comment: ApJ in press. We present the results from a systematic analysis of the X-ray continuum (`hard') time-lags and intrinsic coherence between the $2-4\,\mathrm{keV}$ and various energy bands in the $0.3-10\,\mathrm{keV}$ range, for ten X-ray bright and highly variable active galactic nuclei (AGN). We used all available archival \textit{XMM-Newton} data, and estimated the time-lags following Epitropakis \& Papadakis (2016). By performing extensive numerical simulations, we arrived at useful guidelines for computing intrinsic coherence estimates that are minimally biased, have known errors, and are (approximately) Gaussian distributed. Owing to the way we estimated the time-lags and intrinsic coherence, we were able to do a proper model fitting to the data. Regarding the continuum time-lags, we are able to demonstrate that they have a power-law dependence on frequency, with a slope of $-1$, and that their amplitude scales with the logarithm of the light-curve mean-energy ratio. We also find that their amplitude increases with the square root of the X-ray Eddington ratio. Regarding the intrinsic coherence, we found that it is approximately constant at low frequencies. It then decreases exponentially at frequencies higher than a characteristic `break frequency.' Both the low-frequency constant intrinsic-coherence value and the break frequency have a logarithmic dependence on the light-curve mean-energy ratio. Neither the low-frequency constant intrinsic-coherence value, nor the break frequency exhibit a universal scaling with either the central black hole mass, or the the X-ray Eddington ratio. We present the results of an optical spectroscopic monitoring program targeting NGC 5548 as part of a larger multi-wavelength reverberation mapping campaign. The campaign spanned six months and achieved an almost daily cadence with observations from five ground-based telescopes. The H$\beta$ and He II $\lambda$4686 broad emission-line light curves lag that of the 5100 $\AA$ optical continuum by $4.17^{+0.36}_{-0.36}$ days and $0.79^{+0.35}_{-0.34}$ days, respectively. The H$\beta$ lag relative to the 1158 $\AA$ ultraviolet continuum light curve measured by the Hubble Space Telescope is roughly $\sim$50% longer than that measured against the optical continuum, and the lag difference is consistent with the observed lag between the optical and ultraviolet continua. This suggests that the characteristic radius of the broad-line region is $\sim$50% larger than the value inferred from optical data alone. We also measured velocity-resolved emission-line lags for H$\beta$ and found a complex velocity-lag structure with shorter lags in the line wings, indicative of a broad-line region dominated by Keplerian motion. The responses of both the H$\beta$ and He II $\lambda$4686 emission lines to the driving continuum changed significantly halfway through the campaign, a phenomenon also observed for C IV, Ly $\alpha$, He II(+O III]), and Si IV(+O IV]) during the same monitoring period. Finally, given the optical luminosity of NGC 5548 during our campaign, the measured H$\beta$ lag is a factor of five shorter than the expected value implied by the $R_\mathrm{BLR} - L_\mathrm{AGN}$ relation based on the past behavior of NGC 5548., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present briefly the first results obtained by the application of the KYNREFREV-reverberation model, which is ready for its use in XSPEC. This model computes the time dependent reflection spectra of the disc as a response to a flash of primary power-law radiation from a point source corona located on the axis of the black-hole accretion disc. The assumptions of the model are: central Kerr black hole, surrounded by a Keplerian, geometrically thin, optically thick, ionised disc with the possibility of defining the radial density profile and a stationary hot point-like patch of plasma located on the system rotation axis and emitting isotropic power-law radiation (lamp-post geometry). Full relativistic ray-tracing code in vacuum is used for photon paths from the corona to the disc and to the observer and from the disc to the observer. The ionisation of the disc is set for each radius according to the amount of the incident primary flux and the density of the accretion disc. We report the results of a six-month Swift monitoring campaign of Ark120, a prototypical bare Seyfert1 galaxy. The lack of intrinsic absorption combined with the nearly contemporaneous coverage of the UV and X-ray bands makes it possible to investigate the link between the accretion disk and the Comptonization corona. Our observations confirm the presence of substantial temporal variability, with the X-rays characterized by large-amplitude flux changes on timescales of few days, while the variations in the UV bands are smoother on timescales of several weeks. The source also shows spectral variability with the X-ray spectrum steepening when the source is brighter. We do not detect any correlation between the UV flux and the X-ray spectral slope. A cross correlation analysis suggests positive delays between X-rays and the UV emission, favoring a scenario of disk reprocessing. Although the strength of the correlation is moderate with a delay not well constrained (7.5+-7 days), it is nevertheless indicative of a large disk reprocessing region, with a separation between the X-ray and the UV emitting regions of the order of 1000 rG. The Ark120 correlation results are in agreement with those obtained in similar monitoring studies. When combined together, the observations can be well described by a linear relation between the X-ray/UV delay and the black hole mass. Within the context of the simplest scenario where these delays correspond to light-travel times, the implied distance between the X-ray source and the UV disk reprocessing region is of the order of many hundreds of gravitational radii., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present average R-band optopolarimetric data, as well as variability parameters, from the first and second RoboPol observing season. We investigate whether gamma- ray--loud and gamma-ray--quiet blazars exhibit systematic differences in their optical polarization properties. We find that gamma-ray--loud blazars have a systematically higher polarization fraction (0.092) than gamma-ray--quiet blazars (0.031), with the hypothesis of the two samples being drawn from the same distribution of polarization fractions being rejected at the 3{\sigma} level. We have not found any evidence that this discrepancy is related to differences in the redshift distribution, rest-frame R-band lu- minosity density, or the source classification. The median polarization fraction versus synchrotron-peak-frequency plot shows an envelope implying that high synchrotron- peaked sources have a smaller range of median polarization fractions concentrated around lower values. Our gamma-ray--quiet sources show similar median polarization fractions although they are all low synchrotron-peaked. We also find that the random- ness of the polarization angle depends on the synchrotron peak frequency. For high synchrotron-peaked sources it tends to concentrate around preferred directions while for low synchrotron-peaked sources it is more variable and less likely to have a pre- ferred direction. We propose a scenario which mediates efficient particle acceleration in shocks and increases the helical B-field component immediately downstream of the shock., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables; Accepted for publication in the MNRAS

We present a new set of optical polarization plane rotations in blazars, observed during the third year of operation of RoboPol. The entire set of rotation events discovered during three years of observations is analysed with the aim of determining whether these events are inherent in all blazars. It is found that the frequency of the polarization plane rotations varies widely among blazars. This variation cannot be explained either by a difference in the relativistic boosting or by selection effects caused by a difference in the average fractional polarization. We conclude that the rotations are characteristic of a subset of blazars and that they occur as a consequence of their intrinsic properties., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Context: Theoretical modelling of time-lags between variations in the Fe K$\alpha$ emission and the X-ray continuum might shed light on the physics and geometry of the X-ray emitting region in active galaxies (AGN) and X-ray binaries. We here present the results from a systematic analysis of time-lags between variations in two energy bands ($5-7$ vs $2-4\,\mathrm{keV}$) for seven X-ray bright and variable AGN. Aims: We estimate time-lags as accurately as possible and fit them with theoretical models in the context of the lamp-post geometry. We also constrain the geometry of the X-ray emitting region in AGN. Methods: We used all available archival \textit{XMM-Newton} data for the sources in our sample and extracted light curves in the $5-7$ and $2-4\,\mathrm{keV}$ energy bands. We used these light curves and applied a thoroughly tested (through extensive numerical simulations) recipe to estimate time-lags that have minimal bias, approximately follow a Gaussian distribution, and have known errors. Using traditional $\chi^2$ minimisation techniques, we then fitted the observed time-lags with two different models: a phenomenological model where the time-lags have a power-law dependence on frequency, and a physical model, using the reverberation time-lags expected in the lamp-post geometry. The latter were computed assuming a point-like primary X-ray source above a black hole surrounded by a neutral and prograde accretion disc with solar iron abundance. We present the results of a detailed study of the X-ray power spectra density (PSD) functions of twelve X-ray bright AGN, using almost all the archival XMM-Newton data. The total net exposure of the EPIC-pn light curves is larger than 350 ks in all cases (and exceeds 1 Ms in the case of 1H 0707-497). In a physical scenario in which X-ray reflection occurs in the inner part of the accretion disc of AGN, the X-ray reflection component should be a filtered echo of the X-ray continuum signal and should be equal to the convolution of the primary emission with the response function of the disc. Our primary objective is to search for these reflection features in the 5-7 keV (iron line) and 0.5-1 keV (soft) bands, where the X-ray reflection fraction is expected to be dominant. We fit to the observed periodograms two models: a simple bending power law model (BPL) and a BPL model convolved with the transfer function of the accretion disc assuming the lamp-post geometry and X-ray reflection from a homogeneous disc. We do not find any significant features in the best-fitting BPL model residuals either in individual PSDs in the iron band, soft and full band (0.3-10 keV) or in the average PSD residuals of the brightest and more variable sources (with similar black hole mass estimates). The typical amplitude of the soft and full-band residuals is around 3-5 per cent. It is possible that the expected general relativistic effects are not detected because they are intrinsically lower than the uncertainty of the current PSDs, even in the strong relativistic case in which X-ray reflection occurs on a disc around a fast rotating black hole having an X-ray source very close above it. However, we could place strong constrains to the X-ray reflection geometry with the current data sets if we knew in advance the intrinsic shape of the X-ray PSDs, particularly its high frequency slope., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present the results from a detailed analysis of the 2007 Swift monitoring campaign of the quasar PG1211+143. We constructed broad-band, optical/UV/X-ray spectral energy distributions over three X-ray flux intervals. We fitted them with a model which accounts for the disc and the X-ray coronal emission and the warm absorber (well established in this source). The three flux spectra are well fitted by the model we considered. The disc inner temperature remains constant at ~2 eV, while X-rays are variable both in spectral slope and normalization. The absorber covers almost 90% of the central source. It is outflowing with a velocity less than 2.3*10^4 km/s (3sigma upper limit), and has a column density of ~10^23.2. Its ionization parameter varies by a factor of 1.6, and it is in photo-ionizing equilibrium with the ionizing flux. It is located at a distance of less than 0.35 pc from the central source and its relative thickness, DR/R is less than 0.1. The absorber' s ionization parameter variations can explain the larger than average amplitude of the X-ray variations. The absence of optical/UV variations (consistent with the high black hole mass estimate) argues against the presence of inward propagating disc fluctuations and strong X-ray illumination of the disc (in agreement with the low ratio of X-ray over the bolometric luminosity of ~20-35). We estimate an upper limit for the mass outflow of ~5 solar masses per year (~2.3 times the Eddington mass accretion rate). If the outflow rate is indeed that high, then it must be a short-lived episode in the quasar's life time. Finally, we estimate an upper limit for the kinetic power of the outflow of ~1.4*10^43 ergs/s. This outflow cannot deploy significant mechanical energy to the surrounding ISM of the quasar's host galaxy, but is sufficient to heat the ISM to 10^7 K and to produce a fast decline to the star formation rate of the galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A
