Abstract

The interest in the quality control of the raw materials, intermediates, and final products, as well as production methods, of beer has increased significantly in recent decades due to the needs and expectations of consumers. Increasing in the industrialization and globalization of beer supply chains led to a need for novel analytical tools suitable for the rapid and reliable characterization of the materials involved. In this study, an ultracompact instrument operating in the NIR region of the spectrum, microNIR, was tested for the chemical investigation of barley malts. The essential raw materials for brewing require careful control since they deeply affect the characteristic flavor and taste of the final products. Therefore, a robust prediction model able to classify base and specialty barley malts was developed starting from NIR measurements. Soft Independent Class Analogy (SIMCA) was selected as the chemometric technique for the optimization of two prediction models, and ground and sieved materials were investigated using spectroscopy. The microNIR/chemometric approach proposed in this study permitted the correct prediction of the malt samples included in the external validation set, providing false positive and false negative rates no higher than 3.41% and 0.25%, respectively, and confirming the feasibility of the novel analytical platform. Abstract

Takezaki et al. analyzed the outcome of 57 patients with indolent lymphomas treated with Bendamustine plus Rituximab (BR) according to the number of cycles received, showing that patients who discontinued BR after four cycles had similar outcomes compared to patients who received five or six cycles. Considering the similarities but also the differences between indolent lymphomas and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), we enriched the results obtained with a cohort of CLL patients treated with BR starting from the experience of the Lazio region group on CLL. Out of 115 patients, 97 (84%) received 4-6 cycles of BR, while 18 (16%) received 1-3 cycles. The outcome of the group of patients who received at least 4 cycles was superior in terms of response rate (ORR 96% vs. ORR 83%, p = 0.041; CR 58% vs. CR 28%, p = 0.052 respectively) and PFS [median PFS 52.6 (40.3-64.9) versus 26.2 (19.3-33.0) months, p < 0.001]. The number of patients undergoing 4 cycles of BR (4-cycles group) and 5-6 cycles (over-4-cycles group) was 9 and 88, respectively. Compared to analysis conducted by the Japanese group in indolent lymphomas, in CLL we did not observe any difference between the outcome of the 4-cycles group and the over-4-cycles group in terms of ORR (89% vs. 97%, p = 0.268) and in survival [median PFS 40.8 (13.7-67.8) versus 52.6 (38.7-66.5) months, p = 0.117]. Moreover, we observed that patients who achieved a clinical CR showed overlapping outcomes with patients who received more than 4 cycles [CR vs. non-CR median PFS not reached vs. 11.0 months; over-4-cycles group median PFS 52.6 months (40.3-64.9); p < 0.001]. Nowadays chemoimmunotherapy with BR is reserved to fit elderly CLL patients, and there are many chemo-free treatment options available; therefore, discontinuation after 4 cycles may be permissible in patients who obtained a CR in order to limit toxicity as much as possible.

Abstract

This qualitative research study paper examines the integration of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in building brand reputation and competitive advantage of SME startups. It seeks to explore the drivers, importance, and best practice applications of CSR activities by startups. It further analyzes customers' impressions of startup sustainability and CSR practices and the firm's reputation. The study adopted an interpretive study design (thematic analysis), focused on a sample of CSR specialists, advertisers, and startup owners, and revealed a reflection of the theoretical dimension of CSR in the study results. Specifically, the social size of CSR implementation and the adoption of practices that focus on human resources, the environment, and society at large, were captured in the data. Basic CRS principles, such as the need for the development and implementation of environmental awareness programs, volunteering, and labor, were commonly agreed by the participants as relevant emerging themes of the study. The results pointed out the importance of company ethics in shaping a healthy employee work environment and highlighted the critical role of the firm's purpose. The emphasis on building relationships with society as a whole and specifically with the community in which the company operates seems to be the key to the profitable implementation of CSR regarding brand reputation. The reciprocal relationship created between the customer who feels that the company is not solely for profit but in its connection with the community is the basis for a profitable course. Voluntary actions organized by the firm to support the community act as a means of building brand reputation.

Abstract

COVID-19 disease has a strong impact on hematological patients; those receiving autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) represent a particularly vulnerable group, in which the effectiveness of vaccination is very variable. Chiarucci et al. showed that patients affected by non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and treated with rituximab experienced a lower rate of immunization against SARS-CoV-2 (54%), as well as significantly lower IgG antibody titers. In our multicenter retrospective observational study, we included 82 patients who underwent aHSCT, divided into two groups: 58 patients vaccinated after aHSCT (group A) and 24 vaccinated before getting transplantation (group B). In group A, 39 (67%) patients had positive serology, and the rate of positivity increased with time after aHSCT. In the subgroup of patients with NHL the administration of rituximab predicted negative serology, particularly when administered in the 6 months before vaccination (13% response rate). Patients affected by plasma cells had a higher rate of positivity (83% overall), independently of the time to aHSCT. In group B, no patient who initially showed positive serology became negative after transplantation, so the aHSCT did not affect the response to the vaccination. Our study confirmed the role of rituximab as a negative predictor of response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, whereas the conditioning and transplantation procedure itself seemed to be less important.

La ricognizione consentirà di mettere in luce l’ampiezza del reticolo viario che segnava il territorio per andare a raccordarsi con le grandi direttrici del transito alpino che costituivano il tramite verso le principali mete di pellegrinaggio in epoca medioevale e moderna. I riscontri toponimici ricavati dagli itinerari dei viaggiatori e dalle fonti documentarie costituiranno il punto di partenza per verificare i riflessi del culto iacobeo sul territorio, confermati da un ricco patrimonio iconografico e simbolico, variamente interpretato nelle diverse aree della regione.

Abstract

In the recent years, due to the pandemic, the use of the internet has become a necessity in almost every aspect of ordinary life. The education institutions are engaged either in online or blended learning teaching as the physical contact between human is banned to prevent virus spreading. This article charts the concerns related to blended learning as reflected in the educational literature. It is argued that, to appreciate the potential and limitations of blended learning in education, we need to trace what harness the strengths of the blended learning. The study applied the integrative review method, which involved reviewing the current literature in the implementation of blended learning. The research questions that guided the study were about the learners’ characteristics and needs in blended learning, the design features that should be considered in blended learning and finally which application of self-regulated learning is possible in blended learning. The recommendations justified by the research will be addressed to educators, designers of the education system aiming the advancement of effective blended learning environments. This study shows that students have a high potential of learning and retaining academic content through blended learning, especially concerning demonstrating learner self-regulation. Blended Learning aims to enhance student learning and develop crucial analytical skills and learning competencies. Our findings confirm that learners' ability to assess and critically assess knowledge sources accompanied by face-to-face support, interaction with peers, motivation and satisfaction of the learners is provided.

Abstract
