Abstract

Crayfish utilize aquatic plants as a food source and may concentrate pollutants, such as heavy metals. Monitoring the possible heavy metal presence in crayfish edible tissues is therefore important since crayfish can be part of the human diet. In this study we have analysed specimens of Cherax destructor of two different sizes coming from a crayfish farm, with respect to heavy metal (lead, copper, cadmium, chromium, zinc) concentrations in the muscle, hepatopancreas and exoskeleton. Furthermore, the metal concentrations were determined in water, sediment and in plants. Our data show that the contents of lead, copper, cadmium, chromium and zinc, are higher in the tissues with respect to water, indicating in some cases their bioaccumulation in Cherax destructor. The content of lead and zinc in sediment and plants the animals feed on, was higher than in tissues and organs, suggesting that biomagnification does not occur for these heavy metals. Copper and chromium show biomagnification in all tissues, while cadmium only in the hepatopancreas.

Abstract

A comparative study of topoisomerase activity in two European crayfish species Astacus astacus and Austropotamobius pallipes was carried out to determine the physiological basis of the difference in ecological fitness of these systematically related crayfish species. Topoisomerase activity was present in both species. Adult males were kept for a week at the temperatures of 4, 15 and 25°C. Topoisomerase activity was measured in the hepatopancreas, the muscle tissue and the spermiducts. It was present in the hepatopancreas of Atacus astacus at the three tested temperatures and in Austropotamobius pallipes only at the temperatures of 4 and 15°C. No topoisomerase activity was registered in the muscle tissue and in the spermiducts. Taken together these data indicate that topoisomerase activity can be a useful marker for crayfish viability.

Abstract

Oxidative damage reflects an imbalance between the production of oxidants and removal or scavenging of those oxidants. The antioxidants neutralize via enzymatic and non-enzymatic mechanisms the toxic effects of the free radicals, acting at different levels both within the cell and in the extra cellular fluids. A study on the oxidative defenses under conditions of stress temperature was carried out in the freshwater crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes italicus, an endangered species now distributed in scattered areas in Italy and a few Europeans countries. Glutatione peroxidase (GPX) and Glutatione reductase (GR) activity have been measured in the hemolymph, hepatopancreas and muscle tissue by an enzymatic assay in male individuals exposed, for seven days, to three different temperature: 4 °C, 15 °C and 25 °C. Antioxidative enzyme activity was found in the hemolymph, but not in the hepatopancreas and in the muscle tissue. The enzyme activity varied in the hemolymph according to the temperature the animals were exposed to. As far as the GPX is concerned we found the activity only in the hemolymph of animals exposed to the temperature of 15 °C. On the contrary, GR activity was detected in the hemolymph at the three considered temperatures. Although the highest level of GR activity was found at 25 °C, followed by 4 °C and 15 °C, it was nonetheless very low and much lower than the level of GPX activity. Very little is known on oxidative stress in crustaceans and virtually nothing in the freshwater crayfish A. pallipes italicus. Our data, although preliminary, indicate that the antioxidant defenses provide a useful criterion for the thermal tolerance in studies on natural distribution and suitability of aquacultural environments.

Abstract

According to the changed operative conditions due to lockdown and successive reopening a number of facts can be analysed. The main effects have been detected on: mobility, environment, social media and people flows. While in this first report only mobility, transport and environment are reported. The analysis performed identified a strong reduction of the mobility and transport activities, and in the pollutants. The mobility reduction has been assessed to be quite coherent with respect to what has been described by Google Global mobility report. On the other hand, in this paper a number of additional aspects have been put in evidence providing detailed aspects on mobility and parking that allowed us to better analyze the impact of the reopening on an eventual revamping of the infection. To this end, the collected data from the field have been compared from those of google and some considerations with respect to the Imperial college Report 20 have been derived. Abstract

Background and aims: Interest in the role of atrial substrate in maintaining Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is growing. Fibrosis is the culprit in the electrical derangement of the myocytes. Many cardiovascular risk factors are known to be linked to atrial scarring; among them Uric Acid (UA) is emerging. The purpose of our study is to find whether UA is associated with Left Atrium (LA) with pathological substrate. Methods and results: 81 patients who underwent radiofrequency transcatheter ablation for nonvalvular AF at the cardiological department of the Niguarda Hospital were enrolled in an observational, cross-sectional, single-center study. UA levels were analysed before the procedure. High density electroanatomic mapping of the LA was performed and patients were divided according to the presence or not of areas of pathological substrate (bipolar voltage <0.5 mV in sinus rhythm). 19 patients showed a LA with pathological substrate. These subjects showed a significant higher prevalence of persistent phenotype of AF (84.2 vs. 25.8%, p < 0.001). UA levels were significantly higher in the group of patients with LA with pathological substrate (6.8 ± 1.9 vs 5.3 ± 1.4 mg/dL, p < 0.001) as well as the prevalence of hyperuricemia (26.5 vs. 6.5%, p = 0.021). The association between uric acid LA with pathological substrate remains significant even after correction for confounding factors (age, left ventricular dysfunction, valvular disease, arrythmia phenotype and furosemide use) and also when the ratio UA/creatinine was evaluated. Conclusions: In a population of patients who underwent AF ablation, higher UA levels were significantly associated with pathological LA substrate at electro-anatomical mapping.

Abstract

The Living Earth Simulator (LES) is one of the core components of the FuturICT architecture. It will work as a federation of methods, tools, techniques and facilities supporting all of the FuturICT simulation-related activities to allow and encourage interactive exploration and understanding of societal issues. Society-relevant problems will be targeted by leaning on approaches based on complex systems theories and data science in tight interaction with the other components of FuturICT. The LES will evaluate and provide answers to real-world questions by taking into account multiple scenarios. It will build on present approaches such as agent-based simulation and modeling, multiscale modelling, statistical inference, and data mining, moving beyond disciplinary borders to achieve a new perspective on complex social systems.

Abstract

Several recent studies have compared the relative efficiency of alternative flaw selection strategies for partial-order causal link (POCL) planning. We review this literature, and present new experimental results that generalize the earlier work and explain some of the discrepancies in it. In particular, we describe the Least-Cost Flaw Repair (LCFR) strategy developed and analyzed by Joslin and Pollack (1994), and compare it with other strategies, including Gerevini and Schubert's (1996) ZLIFO strategy. LCFR and ZLIFO make very different, and apparently conflicting claims about the most effective way to reduce search-space size in POCL planning. We resolve this conflict, arguing that much of the benefit that Gerevini and Schubert ascribe to the LIFO component of their ZLIFO strategy is better attributed to other causes. We show that for many problems, a strategy that combines least-cost flaw selection with the delay of separable threats will be effective in reducing search-space size, and will do so without excessive computational overhead. Abstract

The Stroke Pathway performance assessment is a key quality improvement element in healthcare. The aim of this study was to carry out a retrospective assessment of the Stroke Pathway in a first level Stroke Unit in Northern Italy and the possible impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A retrospective observational study was carried out analysing data from 1/01/2010 to 31/12/2020. Data considered were: case volume and characteristics of patients undergoing intravenous thrombolysis, baseline modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores, Onset-to-Door (OTD), Door-To-Imaging (DTI) and DoorTo-Needle (DTN) Times, mRS score 3 months after the ischemic event onset (3m-mRS) and NIHSS score 24hours after the ischemic event onset (24h-NIHSS). The study also compared the pre-COVID-19 pandemic period (MarchDecember 2019) with the one following it (March-December 2020). Results: During the considered 10 years range, 418 patients underwent pharmacological thrombolysis. Treatment was extended to older patients (mean age from 66.3 to 75.51 years; p = 0.006) and with a higher baseline disability level (from 0.22 to 1.22; p = 0.000). A statistically significant reduction was found for DTN (from 90 to 61minutes average value; p = 0.000), so that in 2019 more than 50% and in 2020 more than 60% of patients were treated within 60minutes (golden hour). Comparing preand COVID-19 pandemic periods, the number of patients remained almost unchanged, but with a significantly higher baseline disability (mRS=1.18 vs 0.72, p = 0.048). The OTD increased from 88.13 to 118.48minutes, although without a statistically significant difference (p = 0.197). Conclusions: The study highlighted the Stroke Pathway positive impact, even during the COVID-19 pandemic, both on healthcare processes and patients’ outcomes. Abstract

Objective: To analyze the clinical management, the outcomes, and the trend in hysterectomy rates (HR) in patients who underwent this procedure for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). Methods: Multicentric retrospective observational study conducted on 242 patients who underwent hysterectomy for CIN between 2010 and 2020 in nine Italian institutions. Hysterectomy for invasive or micro-invasive neoplasia, sub-total hysterectomy, or trachelectomy were excluded. Results: A significant increase in the trend of HR for CIN was recorded (P = 0.002, r = 0.81; C.I. 95%: 0.415–0.949); HR increased from 0.46% in the year 2010 to 3.32% in 2020. The mortality rate was 0.4%, and 5% had operative complications. On definitive histopathology examination, a CIN of any grade was recorded in 71.5% of cases, and an occult invasive cancer in 1.24%. No pathology or CIN1 was found in 26.8% of cases, suggesting over treatment. During follow-up, a vaginal lesion was recorded in 5% of cases. Conclusion: A significant increase in the number of hysterectomies performed for CIN in the last 10 years was recorded. Hysterectomy for CIN can lead to complications, risk of the onset of vaginal lesions, and risk of overtreatment, and remains, in the first instance, an unacceptable treatment, to be proposed only after adequate counseling.

43. Recruitment into Organized Crime: An Agent-Based Approach Testing the Impact of Different Policies

Abstract

Objectives: We test the effects of four policy scenarios on recruitment into organized crime. The policy scenarios target (i) organized crime leaders and (ii) facilitators for imprisonment, (iii) provide educational and welfare support to children and their mothers while separating them from organized-crime fathers, and (iv) increase educational and social support to at-risk schoolchildren. Methods: We developed a novel agent-based model drawing on theories of peer effects (differential association, social learning), social embeddedness of organized crime, and the general theory of crime. Agents are simultaneously embedded in multiple social networks (household, kinship, school, work, friends, and co-offending) and possess heterogeneous individual attributes. Relational and individual attributes determine the probability of offending. Co-offending with organized crime members determines recruitment into the criminal group. All the main parameters are calibrated on data from Palermo or Sicily (Italy). We test the effect of the four policy scenarios against a baseline no-intervention scenario on the number of newly recruited and total organized crime members using Generalized Estimating Equations models. Results: The simulations generate realistic outcomes, with relatively stable organized crime membership and crime rates. All simulated policy interventions reduce the total number of members, whereas all but primary socialization reduce newly recruited members. The intensity of the effects, however, varies across dependent variables and models. Conclusions: Agent-based models effectively enable to develop theoretically driven and empirically calibrated simulations of organized crime. The simulations can fill the gaps in evaluation research in the field of organized crime and allow us to test different policies in different environmental contexts.
